We decided to spend a couple of days exploring gardens in the area that are open to the public. Goldstone Hall Hotel has one such, so it was the obvious place to spend the night. Their ornamental garden is really nice with an impressive herbaceous border. But the stand-out is the large kitchen garden which has its own dedicated gardener looking after it and she is able to supply much of the seasonal fruit and veg for the restaurant. This is mainly intended as a food review but our room is worthy of mention. It was one of the cheaper “Garden Rooms” which does overlook the garden.. Access to the four Garden Rooms is through what can only be described as a junk room – full of old sofas, heaps of old cushions, stacks of crockery, logs and other “stuff”. It really makes a bad first impression. The room itself was generally fine, although with minimal storage for clothes, even the small amount we’d brought for our one night stay. But it was a nice touch for there to be a bunch of grapes and a vase full of dahlias - both from the garden. We looked over dinner menus while sipping an aperitif on the terrace. It was one of those rare days this summer when it was warm enough to do that. Drinks came with house made lemon thyme crisps. It was the first example of the kitchen garden produce finding its way to the restaurant. It’s a short menu with five choices at each course. It’s the sort of food where I can imagine a competent home cook thinking “I could do that at home on a really good day” – but they probably couldn’t. Once in the dining room, there were a couple of snacks – a tangy blue cheese beignet and a disc of beetroot, topped with a tiny amount of maybe smoked fish. Beetroot also featured in one of the starters. A strip of shortcrust pastry, topped with a Shropshire Blue cheese mousse, pickled beetroot chunks and a couple of leaves of sorrel. The other starter saw shredded ham hock, served warm, with a scattering of lentils, shallot and a tang from English mustard. Cod was just cooked through for one of the main courses. There’s braised wild rice. And the kitchen had made the effort to skin broad beans from the garden so there was a really nice contrasting green on the plate. The sauce came from crème fraiche, given a zing from horseradish. Pork fillet had been stuffed with sage and Shrewsbury Fretta cheese (yes, it’s a feta lookalike) and could have stood more of both. There’s mixed greens and a Madeira sauce bringing it all together. There was a dish of potato dauphinoise to share, made from Yukon Gold spuds grown in the garden – I think the first time I’ve seen this North American potato in a restaurant here. There’s another bowl of courgettes which had a herby hint – maybe tarragon. We both went with the same dessert. An absolutely lovely berry soufflé, accompanied by a woodruff ice cream. The latter is one of many herbs growing in the kitchen garden. This one wasn’t really to our taste, seeming a bit “medicinal”. We finished with decent espresso, served in the lounge, along with a couple of petit fours. Breakfast was really nice. Fresh fruit and yoghurt was laid out so you could help yourself – amongst the offerings, figs and blackberries came from the garden. Orange juice was top quality and there was a choice of teas for one of us who likes tea. Cafetiere coffee was good. Orders were taken for cooked food. There is , of course, a “Full English” and a “Full Vegetarian” but we both decided to go with the local speciality – Staffordshire oatcakes, filled with a tangy cheddar and bacon. Toast was offered but we were full by then. So, all in all, a good stay. And dinner in the restaurant passed our “travelling test” – if this was local to home, would we become regulars.

I went with three business guests to give this experience one more try. The meal was a disaster again, I don't know where to start really. I will say this. Why does a restaurant priding itself on its own veg and growing wonderful produce on site not then serve bowls of wonderfully prepared and creatively show-cased homegrown vegetables? Two of my guests were vegan/vegetarian and they really struggled with menu and what was delivered. The service was poor and noone to raise concerns with at the time to be properly addressed; again we left hungry and very disappointed. I've given up, finally. So much potential but hype doesn't cut the mustard. Good luck but no more excuses now.

Good luck to all you hopefuls having Christmas Luncheon at Goldstone Hall. I went last year and it was a disaster! Online menu for non meat eaters hadn’t been updated from 2021 and my family and myself were told if new menu wasn’t to our liking, we could always leave!! We were all shocked, WHERE else could we go on Christmas Day? Without any real choice we stayed. The food was mediocre and the biggest mistake were the sprouts, they weren’t even cooked. They were maybe blanched but still solid in the middle. Goodness where else could you go and not get the main Christmas vegetable right?!!

We arrived at 1245 and the car park was empty, we even sent someone in to make sure it was the right place. It was Saturday so peak time? We were met at the door by a nice lad who welcomed us in but seemed a little unsure. We sat outside on a beautiful patio with a wonderful view and asked if we could see a menu while we waited for the rest of the party. It was explained that they were being printed because they had found an error. At this point we did not know what to expect! But oh boy oh boy this was one of the nicest meals we have had for a long time! Salmon cooked in courgette flower as starter, followed by guinea fowl, both beautifully cooked and presented and then for pudding, gooseberry souffle crumble that was one of the most delicious puddings I have ever had (and I include many Michelin star restaurants in this statement). We were then told that the gooseberries and many ingredients had come from the garden and we should walk round it before we left. So we did. A beautiful well kept garden full of vast quantities of everything you could wish for. Everything came with good surprise after good surprise which prompted me to compliment the head waiter on what an amazing experience we had and also say they have an outstanding place here they should make more of marketing all the great things they do including telling all the guests that many of their produce comes from their own garden, At the beginning of the meal. In summary, this place is immaculately clean, has wonderful food, kind and friendly staff, great chef and a lot of produce comes fresh from the garden. All from wonderfully humble people who should be so, so proud of what they have achieved.

A friend and I decided to push the boat out in an early experience together and to aim high. We both knew of Goldstone Hall by virtue of both of us independently having eaten there before, moderately successfully and as it happened, the Venue was equidistant between us. The meal was 52 pounds per head with modest choice for three courses and the wine was 12 pounds at glass. It was an unmitigated disaster. The starters were tiny and tasteless. Rachel had a soup which represented the strainings from badly drained vegetables and it would not have filled an egg cup and my terrine was full of tomato skin that they had clearly tried to remove? Rachel had tempura vegetables which were not cooked and again the size of the meal was outrageous only representing a side dish scale. She advised it was tasteless and Woody full stop my on the other hand had gone for shoulder of lamb which turned up shredded in a small bound circle which was dry burnt on the edges and served with a daupinois which had clearly been microwaved from cold or frozen and where the fat content had congealed. There were no vegetables offered and I had to wait 15 minutes for those to be cooked especially. They arrived to raw to be helpful for the dryness of the meal. Rachel ordered a crumble for dessert but it came out souffle and I'm afraid my summer putting was a disgrace the vegetable puree within the thimble size putting had not absorbed into the stale bread and the external skin was like eating chewy stale bread because guess what, that's what it was. At no point during the meal did service enquire as to how the meal was going and the bill was 150 quid. I would not have minded so much if there had been atmosphere with the other seven tables but sadly there wasn't other than a bad one because I suspect everyone else was having a similar experience? We had some evidence of this in that towards the end a couple next to us said wasn't that a disaster? They said they weren't going to complain because their father and father-in-law had recommended it and was Local. Like dutiful guinea pigs we paid and ran but I felt compelled to write this because it is a true accurate reflection of our terrible experience. The grounds and vegetable garden offers so much promise but even this is cruel because the vegetable garden is not brought to the table; it triggers your salivation but then the management and the Cook don't deliver it and I couldn't help but think there was resonating ironic laughter emanating from the rafters that night as what was set out was simply not delivered. Go cautiously before you book this experience because it is simply not worth it and we grabbed takeaway food on the way home our tummies rumbling with disdain.

So we booked a room for a family wedding mid week room with breakfast included £180.00 . Arriving early to experience the hotel facilities, room was nice but somewhat small but everything was okay. Ordered a drink for my partner and I , 1 pint of lager, vodka and bottled lemonade £13.80 not expecting this sort of price, strangely then the price fluctuations throughout the evening was somewhat disappointing. Finally at the end of the night we were disappointed to be told you could order another drink but not sit down stairs with our friends! How bizarre. Sorry to say that the staff were abrupt, to the point of like it or lump it attitude, and not just to me but other people as well. Would have liked to have stayed for breakfast with family and friends but based on the attitude and atmosphere got up early and left . For the price of a room won’t be returning here any time soon all be it discounted , even told to pay up and go !! Lacks customer service, take it or leave it attitude in general, very disappointed.

Had Sunday lunch here with my family and what an amazing experience it was, everything from how special you are made to feel, to the utterly delicious food, I couldn't rate it highly enough. It is not just about the food, it is about the whole experience, from sipping drinks in one of the lovely drawing rooms to wandering around the very well manicured garden. This place is very special and I can't wait to return.

We were made to feel very welcome as soon as we walked in, this place is relaxed and unhurried. The only thing that is mass produced here are the plates and dishes, the food most certainly isn’t. The starters simply first class, the mains were just as good ( so many places use frozen veg and roast potatoes etc - but this place definitely doesn’t) the meat on the plate was two thick slices of extremely tender and flavoursome. The vegetables were oozing with flavour and freshness. The desert trolley was a joy, everyone looked at it as it was wheeled into the dining area, I chose the apple crumble, my wife the sticky toffee pudding - both homemade and just perfect. We had coffees in one of the other rooms just off the main restaurant and talked about how enjoyable our Sunday lunch experience was. This place is an absolute first class gem

We stopped here for a quick breakfast on our way somewhere else. Very nice food (the sausages and scrambled eggs in particular), beautiful location, and at £15pp inc coffees, cereals, toast, and a full cooked breakfast, no more expensive than stopping at a motorway service station! Well worth the detour

We went there as a birthday treat as it had been highly recommended and decided to treat ouselves to afternoon tea. The venue and especially the gardens are beautifull and fascinating. The afternoon tea however was somewhat average and I would have expected something a bit more imaginative. The example menu on the website did look more interesting which is why we went. No evidence of any produce from the garden which they make such a thing about and generally lots of stodge and no chance of eating it all. Sandwiches were OK. Then a big chunk of sausage roll and a tartlet/quiche (which was nice). Then 4 chunks of sweet average cake each. Yes we could have taken them home but didn't really fancy them (my wife makes far better). The scones were OK but a bit dry and not enough clotted cream (but that's probably just me) So a bit of a dissapointment.

We booked weeks ago for Sunday lunch. They knew we were coming for our 1.30pm booking. We arrived at 1.20pm, ordered drinks, which came 20-25 mins later! Menus arrived at 1.50pm. Our starter was served at 2.30pm, unacceptable. The food was good, but we had a taxi booked for 4pm. That would have been plenty of time if we'd been served quicker, ie starters by 2pm. We had to rush our puds & had no time for coffees etc. So, overall nice food, but slow service that spoilt our afternoon. We were there for 2 & 1/2 hours, but the wait & the rush at the end not good enough, given a £36 cost for the meal. NB, we spent a lot on wine. So, where we normally tip well, we didn't leave a tip this time. We might return, but would request that service is more efficient.

Had a very enjoyable meal with my partner, supplementing the tasting menu. We thought the food was very creative and tasty and the service by the staff to be very attentive and efficient. The only improvement we could see was to possibly have a few more waiting staff on for the restaurant, although due to there being a wedding on, we could see how this might be challenging. Overall a fantastic evening

An absolutely superb evening from start to finish. We were here for a sadly diminished (in numbers) Diamond Wedding Anniversary celebration. The food was inventive, flavoursome and just the right quantity. Service was efficient and well paced. It was Michelin star quality, and even better for the fact that many of the ingredients come from their own garden. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food, atmosphere, service and surroundings. I cannot overstate how wonderful the food, staff and owners that run this beautiful establishment are. We had our first night away with our baby and we were made to feel so welcome and looked after. The chef needs holding on to because as much as the waitresses might not like his ego getting any bigger, he’s very talented 🤣🤣🤣 the duck especially, was perfectly cooked. Some of the courses we ate last night could have been plated at a Michelin star restaurant in London without a raised eyebrow. I’ve visited a number of times over the last 15 years and I must say, last night was my favourite visit yet. Special thanks to Kirsty and Libby, lovely meeting you both. Oh and lastly, Goldstone Hall has the best wine list in Shropshire. Not up for debate! MC

We were two of only four people eating in the restaurant and we decided not to have the tasting menu, but to choose from the Lounge menu instead. Skipping starters, we ordered the salmon and the steak: both were very tasty and the fat chips ordered as a side with the salmon were delicious. We had the cheese and an oatmeal and raspberry fool as desserts - again, both were very good. We finished with tea and petit fours. The only criticism we would have is the music: not good!

We opted for a last minute tasting menu on a Friday night and then decided to stay over also as we couldn't organise a taxi to get home. Tables well spaced and easy enough to social distance. I think the tasting menu is excellent value and every course was delicious. I think the duck with cherry stood out but all was well executed. Room was comfortable. I love this place, My husband and I will generally try and visit when we are in the area. Its a real gem of old school service and high food standards that is generally quite hard to find in the location. After breakfast, which was great, we wandered round the gardens for a while. It was so restorative to see all growth and the insects buzzing round. The smell from the herbs was heavenly. Feeling inspired after we left. It was a wonderful treat to stay and recharge the batteries bit.

Fabulous property, set in stunning gardens and run by extremely friendly (but not over-friendly!) hosts, who put us at our ease and made us feel special. The menu, although only just post-lockdown, did not seem limited and was well thought-out. Beautifully presented, quickly served and absolutely delicious. Lockdown measures were all well-organised and they managed to make the place seem relaxed, despite the distanced tables etc. All in all, a very pleasant evening with delicious food - most memorable and we will certainly be returning when we next visit this part of the UK.

Where can I begin. One of the beer was served in a cracked glass and when that was pointed out the waiter has taken it away and poured the left over drink in another glass, isn’t it just common sense to replace the drink? What if there was glass in it? My main course came delicious and as I was admiring and enjoying the fresh vegetable I was in complete shock to find a massive beetle of a 50p coin size in my vegetable. I was completely put off and I wasn’t even half way through my dish. The waitress was very apologetic and asked if I want another replacement I told them no. There were 11 of us and all were put off by the beetle that I found. Birthday cake came out and looked when half of the party was down in the garden and not present so we have to light it again. When I went to settle the bill they had the cheek to charge for my main, and also charge to children as adults. Staffs were pleasant but that simply isn’t enough. They were amateur and when you have to pay £400 for lunch I expect more than this. The most funniest thing is that when the waitress came and said to me the owners daughter is now ready to see me I felt I was back in school being sent to see the headmaster. Definitely won’t be returning and suggest anyone who wants to go might as well forget it. I can have so many better option spending this sort of money then coming to this amateur establishment.

I visited for afternoon tea in January. The food was lovely but still I feel a little expensive for the area. On arrival we were greeted and shown to our table in the conservatory area. Unfortunately this is where the attentiveness ended. We had to ask for drink refills on two occasions before they appeared and also had to ask for clean plates and cutlery between the savoury and sweet items. Maybe two settings could be provided at the outset? There was a larger party in s square room next to ours who were making quite a bit of noise. That was fine and didn’t bother us but they shut the door so as not to disturb us. Not wanting to walk through their private gathering to find a way to the bar to pay, I had no option but to walk through the main dining room. There I was asked by Sue where I was going!! I explained that I needed to pay. I then found the bar which was being taken up by John and I could not get near it to ask anyone if I could pay. The poor young waitress ( I only saw two the entire time) looked exhausted and was run off her feet, and I had to bother her to sort my bill out. I don’t see why the owners couldn’t have done this as they did not appear busy. I think more staff would mean that the existing staff have more enthusiasm and appear less tired, but I do believe that this venue has a high staff turnover. A shame really and I did not leave a tip because of the owners’ attitudes.

From the first course to the dessert trolley every mouthful was fab, there was even seconds of puds if you could fit it in! One of our party had a dietary requirement, no fat, and they went out of their way to provide the correct food, making soup especially for him, and making petit fours suitable for him to have with our coffee. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. We went to Goldstone Hall for our wedding anniversary meal, unfortunately the experience was bad!Unfortunately there was a loud group of business men next to our "quiet corner table", the small dining area is not suitable for an enjoyable dining experience when groups are also in the vicinity. The bar is close to the small dining area and unsurprisingly noisy with the drinking party. We asked to move, and were thankfully taken away from the noise, however it had very hard, small seats. The food was very overly complex, with combinations that didn't really gel for us and at £97 for two, very poor value. We tried again for a celebratory evening meal, but at Rowton castle; this was exemplary and just over half the cost! In summary, our Goldstone experience was unexpected and bitterly disappointing.

We had the dinner set menu (my husband, my parents and I) and absolutely loved the venue. The staff were nice and friendly. The food was good, but some dishes were too salty or just had a wrong taste. One of our courses was served cold when it shouldn't have been. The waitress' were busy with other tables to get their attention to tell them so we just ate it cold thinking maybe that's how it should be. When the waitress finally came we were done and we asked if it was supposed to be cold and she went and found out that no, it wasn't- we didn't think so. I had the veggie pie/tart which was ok but quite dry - would've been nice if it had more moisture/sauce. The environment can be ruined if you have a loud table/guests sitting in the room because it is such a lovely little dining room area. Luckily were were pretty much done and asked if we could have our tea/coffee/cheese/petits fours in one of the lounge rooms to get away from the loud guests which they didn't mind. The petits fours weren't nice - brownie was average and the white chocolate & something balls were not good. Not sure what they were supposed to taste like. Saying all that, the price you pay for the set menu dinner over reasonable and appropriate and suitable for what you get. The price matched the food I guess. Lastly, the one thing that always seems to let a restaurant down is when it's time for the bill and unfortunately this was one of them. Once they serve you your last bits they just disappear. We waited and waited.. and finally my husband just stood at the bar and waited for longer until the waitress finally came and gave the bill and he paid. Good service means service and attentiveness all the way until the bill is paid. All in all, an ok nice dinner for the price but they can improve.

Then we come to the veg.We like our veg quite firm but it was almost impossible to get a knife through the carrots and broccoli. Complained to staff who were numerous but no one seemed in charge.

We have been here many times before, however the reason for my review this time was the above and beyond food and service we received for my birthday meal. They had reserved a separate and private diving room for our party which had a fabulous ambience. The food was OUTSTANDING and we are picky! Wine selections were wonderful, only criticism was they ran out of the particular wine we were drinking but to be fair, we went through a lot. The staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgable. This is a special venue and it made a birthday meal one to remember. We had friends who traveled a long way and are already talking about revisiting!

Lunched here today. The £14 salad was soggy and consisted of nothing more than a few limp leaves out of a packet. Yuck. The blonde haired waitress was a miserable cow - really disappointing service - it wouldn't hurt to smile and be friendly/polite, very unwelcoming. Since dining here some twelve months ago, when I was less than impressed, I thought that there was a marked improvement in all aspects - menu, quality and service. The menu was well balanced, complimented by an extensive wine list. The four courses were beautifully presented in sumptuous taste, be aware that this is definitely not "meat and two veg", and some may consider the delicate portions rather small. The waitress were attentive, yet unobtrusive, with empty plates whisked away unnoticed and glasses continually filled without having to ask.For that special occasion without any budgetary constraints it is well worth a try.Goldstone Hall is classy without being pretentious, with a very relaxing ambience.

We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary with afternoon tea. Sandwiches were OK, 3 small pieces of cake each, delicious. The piece de resistance is always the scones. They were terrible! I think they were bought ones, definitely not freshly baked that morning and probably pinged in the microwave as they were very dry, only the jam and cream made them edible. We ate them as we were paying £20 for the treat. I don't drink tea or coffee so asked for hot chocolate and was very surprised to find I was billed for it, £3.80. We went to Dorothy Clive gardens today and had wonderful scones.

Goldstone Hall is a fantastic location to enjoy afternoon tea on a lovely Shropshire Summer day.The young lady who met us at the door could not have been more plesant, polite or attentive and the owner John is happy to come and chat to you treating you as if you were a good friend whilst obviousley showing his enthusiasm for his hotel, gardens and home grown fruit and vegetables.I would advise visiting on a warm day as you are then able to sit out on the terrace and after you have enjoyed your afternoon tea take the time to stroll around the wonderful gardens. As mentioned before the service from the young waitress was exemplary and the food was very plesant with an extensive choice of tea's for aficionados to choose from. We were provided with a pleasant selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes which proved to be quite filling, unlike some establishments Goldstone does not have to use the typical English trick of using a large quantity to hide average quality. If the weather was poor then you would be able to sit inside this wonderful establishment but if you can, visit on fair weather day as the ambiance and location are part of the pleasure of Goldstone and if you did not get to enjoy the gardens you really would be missing out.My wife and I previously were fortunate enough to have our wedding reception at Goldstone, it was a pleasure to return to this fantastic venue.

I love visiting Goldstone Hall - my husband and I always have a wonderful evening here. John, Sue, Victoria and Katie are always so welcoming and pleasant, as are the rest of their team. Chris is a superb chef who really makes the most of the fresh produce grown in the extensive gardens - something that seems to be lost on many Shropshire chefs despite our amazing setting for local meat and agricultural produce! The very well-priced wine list offers an excellent selection and on the odd occasion we have enjoyed a little too much of it, we have stayed the night in a lovely large suite and enjoyed breakfast the next morning. A wonderful local family run business, which is a delight to support. Dining out in Shropshire with a series of poor experiences compels me to write this review (and plan to return very soon!) as it makes me appreciate this hidden gem on our doorstep even more.

We went for an evening meal for the OH's birthday. The entire experience, from initial booking to being given my coat, was absolutely excellent. I have a number of foods that I cannot eat, or can only have if cooked in a certain way. I gave them the basics that I can't have on the phone when booking, however I had to call them again in an embarassed panic on the evening we were going, when I saw the online menu and realised that there was nothing in the starters list that I could have. They were warmth, charm and politeness personified. In a matter of minutes the lady I spoke with had suggested an altered version of one of the starters, checked through all the mains with me, as well as the desserts. She really made me feel as if awkward customers were her favourite! On arrival, we were seated in a relaxed lounge room, drinks were brought and we were brought the menus by the lady I'd spoken to, who assured me of the preparations that had been made for me. A soft, cosy atmosphere pervaded the evening and every member of staff was friendly, generous with their time and very helpful. When seated, we were touched to find an unobtrusive birthday card for the OH on our table. The food was fantastic. I cannot praise it highly enough. The starters were perfect and my altered version was delightful. For mains, I had a vegetarian option, which was sumputous with vivid flavours and colours (to be expected I suppose - they do have their own glorious kitchen garden) and the OH had beef that really did melt in the mouth. Desserts was stunning. Very well presented, appropriately sized (unlike so many places) and very tasty. The strawberry, meringue and elderflower cold custard that I had was gorgeous, with elderflower jelly fragements and tiny real flowers too. There were other personal touches that made this evening really special, such as the aforementioned birthday card on table and the large Happy Birthday written in chocolate on the petit-fours plate that made this a really romantic evening to remember. Many thanks to the wonderful team. We will be back and recommending it highly to anybody who will listen!!

I chose Goldstone Hall for Sunday lunch as I wanted somewhere nice to treat our daughter who is a student at Harper Adams Uni and when settling the bill with the waitress it seems many parents have the same idea. It was quite charming and the real fires were very welcoming on a chilly day. The lunch was delicious and the chance of "seconds" from the dessert trolley was appealing, unfortunately none of us could manage it! The staff looked quite young but all knew exactly what they were doing, very professional but in a friendly way so credit to your training. The location here is lovely and peaceful. I booked this venue for a special birthday meal. As it was on a Sunday we were offered the 3 course Sunday lunch for £32 per person. I felt this was quite expensive compared to many other restaurants I've visited but as it was a special occasion & on recommendation from family who'd previously been here, I thought we'd give it a try.We were seated in the conservatory room - which was lovely. Our starters arrived & the portions of the ham hock were quite small - the smoked salmon was sliced very thick. The main courses did not all arrive together, nor did the side vegetables, which meant that some of our plates were going cold by the time everything was brought to the table. This was further delayed by the beef being completely rare - nobody was asked how they would like it cooked on ordering. The vegetables were nice but the roast potatoes were rock hard, with little potato remaining inside! The deserts were ok but the custard served was quite cold. There were 2 children's meals which consisted of 2 sausages each and a small handful of chips, followed by 2 scoops of ice cream - we were charged £16 each for these - which we queried and were later reduced to £13 each! Still significantly overpriced to anywhere I have eaten with my children! The tea & coffee was also an extra £3.50 per person! We all left a little disappointed and I would not include this in my places to revisit any time soon unfortunately - if you're going to charge this amount of money for a Sunday lunch then the service and quality of food needs to be of a much higher standard.

I have been going to Goldstone Hall since I was born, but the last few visits have been disappointing beyond belief. I suggest all vegetarians stay clear! Although their vegetables are beautifully home grown and wonderfully cooked, I do not expect my main to be a pile of vegetables served with yet even more vegetables... I seriously suggest that the head chef either goes on a vegetarian cooking course, or at least googles recipes. I could make something better at home! Although saying that, I hear the meat and fish courses are fabulous! On a final note, how can you charge the same for a pile of vegetables for a full Sunday roast dinner?

As a family, we have been visiting Goldstone Hall for more than thirty years. It is certainly a very beautiful place - elegant and wonderfully maintained - and in such a magnificent setting. The gardens alone are a real treat to see and so well tended by three very talented gardeners. As always, the meals in general were excellent and the service was exemplary. My personal gripe is that Goldstone Hall only pay lip service to the vegetarians amongst us. The one choice available for Sunday lunch has, on recent visits, sadly tended to be lacklustre. Today I was given baby carrots, spinach, green beans and a scattering of fregola. No sauce but a smear of carrot puree. This was served with the usual selection of beautifully cooked vegetables but this just meant that, in essence, I just had a plate of vegetables served with vegetables. Is that value for money?Something as simple as a caramelised onion tartlet, for example, would have made all the difference. What a shame. I did mention it to the staff who certainly responded well and took my comments on board. Come on Goldstone Hall - give a little more consideration to the vegetarians please. You do everything else so well!

Its so relaxing just taking time to enjoy a wonderful meal in beautiful surroundings. We had our baby with us and we were able to take time to feed and settle him before our meal. we were then shown to a table overlooking the garden and a card wishing us a happy anniversary was waiting for us. We were welcomed and shown into the Green Room for a pre-dinner drink and look at the menu, before being shown into the restaurant, and sat at a round table next to the fire. The restaurant is nicely decorated. The menu is quite limited, but there was enough choice and the food was delicious. We have as a family dined here several times for different celebrations. The house itself is beautiful; the facilities i.e. the lounge, dining room and cloakrooms are lovely. Beautifully decorated and furnished, clean and comfortable. If you are lucky enough to visit on a nice day, do take the opportunity to sit outside on the terrace, it's a truly lovely setting with views out over the manicured gardens and gazebo structure and you can even treat yourself to an after dining amble through the garden, herb/vegetable beds too. The last meal we partook of here was perhaps not the best we have experienced here with caterpillars cooked in with the green vegetables, no mint sauce available to go with the roast lamb and only green vegetables and boiled potatoes to choose from. Nevertheless, well worth a visit for a treat and we shall visit again.

Our party of 3 had booked for Sunday lunch. We were lucky because the weather was wonderful and we were able to sit outside viewing the beautiful garden while we drank our Gin and Tonics (all but the driver). The menu was good with the usual Sunday roast but also a nice choice of other dishes. The food was beautifully cooked and I really enjoyed the local asparagus and my main course of chicken. My husband loved the sea bass but would have liked a slightly larger portion. The only reason I haven't given this an excellent is I thought the vegetables served with the main course were a little boring. Carrots and greens from the garden, Jersey potatoes but the skins were left on (which is a personal thing but because Jerseys have "flaky skins" I feel they are best removed) so were not particularly inviting. A good range of puddings but again all very safe, nothing very imaginative but tasted good. I will certainly look forward to my next visit.
