Took my son and his girlfriend here for dinner as part of a weekend stopover. I found the whole experience really good. Staff were attentive and pleasant, food was better than expected. The accompanying wines were also reasonably priced. For hotel dining, this is above the norm

I was invited to tea by my daughter our party of four were left totally underwhelmed by the experience. We went into a cold room one cup was chipped, and one cup was dirty and the sugar bowl lid was dirty all was replaced. The selection of cakes was dull, dried, poor quality and hard. The sandwich bread was dry and the fillings showed no thought. This was below expectations and poor value for money. As the previous correspondent had said the place was empty can only deduce that after the guests had finished they scooted away as quick as lightening to find more to eat elsewhere. There was no atmosphere, no ambience, no service and like the Marie Celeste I will not hurry back. This experience lacks lustre. This could have been so much better

I am so disappointed/pained having to write this review. Restaurant 56 has always been my favourite place to have a meal, I have loved it every single time - my latest visit however left me feeling let down. We arrived and went through the nice entrance (not the one in the hotel) and there wasn't anyone to great us, after waiting a while my partner went through to the hotel to ask to be seated. When I made the booking I had been asked to move my booking earlier as there were a lot of people coming in at the 1 pm I'd asked for... we arrived at 12:30 to no one. A little after 1pm one other table arrived?! I can only assume we were moved because the waiter (possibly manager/supervisor) was on his own the entire time we were there and that it was to make it easier on him rather than getting an extra person in?! (the main restaurant was packed). When my mum sat down she noticed a chip in my cup and the sugar bowl was dirty on the outside with what I presume was tea. We made a comment about both and both were rectified, though if I'm being picky the cup mine was replaced with was of a different type. For the market this is presumably aimed at the set should have been the same?. I'm really sorry but I paid £96 for 4 people and two solitary glasses of prosecco - I don't feel like I have had value for money. The food was nice but not amazing (as it had been previously - though mum did like one particular sandwich) - I wish I had gone to the main restaurant as the price point for the food vs quality there is right. We ate virtually everything but none of us feel like going back for afternoon tea (in fact my parents have said this place is not their thing at all and probably won't ever come back).Sorry guys - you seem to have lost your way. I know it's not supposed to be the same as before but the attention to detail and quality of what is on the plates has disappeared. My biggest regret was choosing to come here opposed to Magnolia - £22 for two course or £28 for three.

We visited today as a family of six for Mother’s Day and we were all bitterly disappointed. Service was very very slow to say the least and the two men serving kept disappearing for prolonged periods of time meaning we couldn’t raise them to get more tea and coffee. When the young lad did reappear he delivered stone cold coffee to us! The tea was very weak (looked like water with no tea in) and there wasn’t enough milk for us all. The sandwiches were a very strange assortment of chicken and tarragon (!) of which the tarragon was very over powering, some sort of pickled cucumber and then a very thin slice of salmon in another. We didn’t really enjoy any of them and some of the bread had was a bit stale at the end possibly where the crust hadn’t been cut off properly. We had two scones each which were like rock cakes, way too hard and we had no where near enough jam and cream for the twelve scones they served us. What with this and the tea and coffee saga I felt like we were constantly having to bother the young lad for more of this and more of that which I don’t want to do, I just want to have enough of everything served to me so I can enjoy what I’m eating and drinking in peace. The cakes we were served were very clearly all bought in. Mass produced and dry. None of them had any icing on or anything interesting about them. There was a lemon drizzle cake but it had no drizzle at all. The chocolate brownie was actually quite nice. The carrot cake needed some icing as was very boring. Then there was half of a profiterole filled with some sort of chocolate cream or chocolate mousse but was extremely bland. The whole cake stand was full of very similar coloured items, I guess you could say it was a pile of beige coloured food, apart from the little chocolate brownies. Nothing interesting about it and didn’t fill me with any desire to eat it which is why we left a lot of it.After we had finished we had to try and find the young lad again to try and pay. Took us ten minutes as he had walked off again. We could have walked out without paying! He was a very nice and extremely polite young man which I do really appreciate however the food and the service just did not live up to my expectations and I felt disappointed that I had asked my mum and mother in law out for an afternoon tea here as we could have gone somewhere nicer. We went and tried the bar afterwards in the main hotel which was completely dead. There was no one else in there just us. No music. No atmosphere. There was a lovely piano there next to the bar and I could just have imagined a packed bar on Mother’s Day with a pianist playing beautiful songs but no. Nothing. It’s such a shame because the hotel, bar and adjoining restaurant are absolutely beautiful and it could be so much better. It should have been lively and bustling full of guests and staff but the place was dead and for the £120 price tag I’m sorry to say we definitely won’t be returning.

Slow service, was served stone cold coffee. The food was dry and boring and completely uninspiring. Was also served a tower of beige ‘afternoon tea’ sandwiches and cakes. Terrible value to money. No staff around to assist with anything. No ambience at all, the place had no atmosphere. Avoid at all costs!

It gives me little pleasure in writing this review as I had been looking forward to the evening, having read the various reviews on Tripadvisor. However, I have to say, for a restaurant seemingly so well regarded, it was one of the most disappointing meals I have had for some time. We went for the full tasting menu and I have to say not one of the seven courses were remotely interesting. Bland and boring was how I would sum it up, although one of the desserts was tasty enough but something you'd find at any half-decent restaurant. In its defence, the place itself was very nice, the staff polite and helpful and the wine list excellent. But the food? Over-priced and dull, I'm sorry to say.

On arrival we were impressed with building and also the interior. We waited ages before a gentleman came to show us to our table. Tea and coffee was served along with the afternoon tea Scones were very chewy not enough cream for four scones. Tiny read rolls with various fillings and small slices of cakes None of it did any thing for our taste beds Fortunately for Sudbury house this had been prepaid,as I would have not paid anywhere near the asking price. Good cup of tea and coffee I have had far superior at the local garden centre .

We arrived at Sudbury House reception and were shown through to the restaurant drawing room for canopies and our coats were taken whilst we choose from the menu. We had rung ahead regarding our dietary requirements (gluten/nuts) and the chef was very accommodating by changing a few dishes to meet our needs. We were asked if we were there for an occasion? I said it was for my birthday. We were shown through to the dining room and enjoyed seven courses of carefully selected and exquisitely presented food. Each course was served by the waiters who then explained the ingredients and the idea behind the dishes. Whilst we were waiting for the bill, we noticed the card on the table was hand written, the team had all signed to wish me a happy birthday, it made the night and I was so grateful. This was a fantastic experience which I highly recommend, we loved every moment. It should be a Michelin restaurant with the level of presentation and attention to detail, every member of the restaurant team is amazing and very professional.

Staying in Whitney we did what we usually do and just pick the type of restaurant we think will give us what we are looking for without reference to online feedback.Once again we were not disappointed and 56 really did come up trumps. We opted for the 7 course Tasting Menu with accompanying wine flight for each course, everything delivered to the table was fully described for both food and wine in a very knowledgeable way. The restaurant was very quiet but did not really detract from the experience and would most certainly return if we were in the area.

We booked a table for a Friday evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary, thinking it would be reasonably busy and therefore have some atmosphere. However we were disappointed to find we were only diners in the whole restaurant. Despite this the service was not always as attentive as it could’ve been - I had to help myself to the wine once when my glass was empty. The food was good, all be it, typically for fine dining rather mean in terms of quantity. Having been fortunate to eat at other fining dining establishments such as Gordon Ramsay I could not put this in the same league. I suspect that was why the restaurant was empty as they are not delivering in terms of the overall experience or value. In summary a tad pretentious and over priced for what it is.

The cuisine was wonderfully tasty and very inventive. We had amuse bouches/more amuse bouches and a tasty version of kombucha as extras amongst our three courses. Fine dining of course means emphasis on the tastes - which were very satisfying and unusual sometimes. It is not for those who want lavish helpings. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening - especially after we requested that they turn down the jazzy music, which was just a bit too intrusive for our taste. There was no problem after it was reduced to a level which enabled conversation. I would recommend no. 56 for special occasions. The wine list is extensive and by the glass it is expensive but they have a very reasonably priced bottle of Uruguayan Merlot which was lovely!

I joined a couple of friends for dinner. They have eaten at restaurant 56 several times and always rated it highly. We weren't disappointed. We chose the 9 course tasting menu - there's a 7 course one and an a la carte one too - and were served canapes on the lawn beforehand. The wine list was good with enough variety, and very reasonably priced. All the courses were executed well, the standouts for me being the incredibly flavourful tomato salad with oregano oil and tomato consomme, beef tartare with bone marrow and the turbot with peas, broad beans and local ham. So tasty. There was a nice take on a cheese course, a couple of bitesize morsels of Tunworth and Cheddar, on biscuits with various chutneys and fruit. The ratio of cheese to the other ingredients was perfect, everything came through nicely. A nice strawberry pre dessert was followed by a three layered parfait with cherries and the best sorbet I have ever tasted. If ever I have been somewhere deserving of a star, this is it. Thanks to the excellent wait staff too, for the friendly service and conversation. Highly recommended.

Arriving at Restaurant 56 the exterior of the building is somewhat underwhelming, however as we walked through the doors that all changed. Prem greeted us with a huge smile and he, together with his two colleagues, took care of us all evening. Their teamwork made for a seemless dining experience where the time flew by as our tastebuds were treated to one flavour explosion after the next. The food was excellent and all totally different from our last visit. We had the 9 course tasting menu with the wine flight and it was extremely good and not too much food either. All in all, a great evening and I will be very keen to return when we have an excuse to do so. They also do normal course menus so you don't have to push the boat out if you don't want to. The dining room is not the cosiest because the ceiling is very high (it being an old grand house) and I suspect they would struggle to alter it - it's probably listed. I love how restaurant 56 isn't sitting back on it's well won awards, the menu evolves and is sessional. The wine pairing to the food is fantastic, and above all is the cooking and food. I haven't eaten anything that didn't go together or confused the menu. I'll be back for more.

The dining experience was fabulous....from the welcome onwards. The teamwork is excellent. The waiters provide details of each course and can be relied upon to give advice when requested. The complementary flavours of each course have to be savoured to be believed. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and look forward to my next visit.

Our first visit to Restaurant 56 didn’t disappoint. The service is impeccable, all the staff were incredibly attentive. From the canapés to the wonderful desert, every mouthful was exquisite in flavour. A card for our anniversary was on the table which was a thoughtful touch. Our town is lucky to have such a fine dining experience, we will certainly return. Many thanks.

This was our first trip to restaurant 56, celebrating a wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint! I could wax lyrical about the food all evening but overall what impressed me most was the great menu and genuine desire from all of the staff to make our evening as enjoyable as possible. My wife is pregnant and while other restaurants will just omit elements to suit their needs the chef tailored the dishes to create a fantastic experience for both of us. The sommelier was knowledgable but not pretentious and the grade 2 listed dining room is a lovely setting. All things considered this is one of the finest meals I have had combining fantastic food with a truly personal service. How the chef managed to combine white chocolate and blue cheese into a serving that made me want more I’ll never know! Many thanks for a delightful evening.

My wife and I had been looking forward to dining again at this fantastic restaurant, a year flies by but it's too long! Anyway, we were thoroughly spoiled from start to finish by the whole team Front of house were totally on the ball by offering us a glass of bubbles knowing it was our wedding anniversary and when we went to our table, the lovely bottle of Amarone we had chosen was sat there waiting for us. The food was divine from start to finish and although all of the dishes were extremely sumptuous, the dish that stood out for me was a very unusual take on cheese and biscuits and I have to say it was just marvellous (as we're all the other dishes). Big up to the 2 extremely talented chefs, both have been on TV showcasing their talents, Andrew Scott on The Great British Menu and Nick Bennett on MasterChef The Professionals with Marcus Wareing. They both took the time to come and say hello to us after dinner and have a little chat Even though there are so many lovely restaurants my wife and I love to frequent, I'm not sure we'll be waiting another year before returning to this wonderfully intimate restaurant for more culinary delights. If you want a top class dining experience then this is the place to visit. Each course is full of flavour, and exquisitely presented. We had the matching wines to accompany each course and this provided a journey through countries that you would not expect to produce wines. All in all, its excellent! There is also amazing service from Prem and his team where you feel like you are treated like royalty.

We have been raving about Restaurant 56 to our friends and family, it was amazing! We were staying in the area and I'm so pleased we made this choice. The service is exceptional and the food is verging on a culinary fantasy. Each dish was extraordinarily inventive and in addition the dishes between courses were an event in themselves. The wine recommendations were perfect (the best dessert wine I've ever had :)) and to top it all we were invited to meet Andrew Scott in the kitchen (an honour and pleasure). We can't wait to come back for a full tasting menu. Thank you to all the team.

My husband and l came to this restaurant as a special treat and we were recommended to to try it. We loved it. We were due to come back in August but the whole of Farringdon had no water. When we arrived we were taken in to a beautiful lounge and were made very welcome and were given a glass of bubbles on the house as we were celebrating a very belated anniversary. We looked at the menu and went for the progressive 9 taster. They very kindly changed some dishes for me as l am lactose intolerant. We were then taken in to the dining room and was so nice to sit and relax. We chose a bottle of white and had help choosing the red. The taster menu was delious we were really spoilt. We were not rushed in between courses. A wonderful experience. Like to say a big thank you to all the staff. We have booked again for my birthday at the end of January and again in July for our anniversary. We had a thoughly enjoyable evening.

We visited Restaurant 56 on a Friday evening and it will now be our ‘go to’ restaurant of choice. We opted for the ‘Progressive 8 Course Menu’ and I think we made absolutely the right decision. We had no expectation that the food was going to be as good as it was, as this restaurant does not yet have a Michelin award, however, from the moment you are seated in the lounge, prior to being seated at your dining table, you are looked after. Our aperitif was delicious and gave us high hopes of what we might expect to be served in the main restaurant – we were not wrong!

We ate here at the weekend for my partners 30th birthday meal. The food was fantastic, my only regret is that we didn't have room to go for all 8 courses which means that I now have to come back :) We even got a card signed by all of the staff which was a very nice touch. Highly recommended. Especially enjoyed the vegan butter, pigeon pastrami and the kombucha.

We visited in August for their special summer 5 course tasting menu. From the minute you enter, you are treated like royalty and made to feel very special. Nothing is too much trouble. We were asked if we wanted to sit outside but decide to sit in the lounge facing the garden for our appertif and appertizer, which was the beginning of our gastronomic journey that evening. Once comfortably seated in the dining room our journey continued with various courses. The attention to detail are second to none and the flavours divine. The waiting staff were friendly but professional and had huge knowledge in the courses they served us.The price for the awesome quality of food and service you receive at Restaurant 56 is very reasonable. The reviews on here can give you an idea of what is served and to be expected but to truly appreciate this amazing experience, go dine there yourself, you will not be disappointed!Cannot wait to return.

Went to Restauarant 56 for the 3rd time with friends who have not been before. As usual we had a relaxed evening with great food, wine pairings, service and atmosphere. For the price and quality this is excellent value for money and there was nothing that any of us could question or complain about. Meeting Nick Bennett the head chef was a pleasure and Przemyslaw the restaurant manager is charming and attentive. The tasting menu was amended for my wife to cater for her preferences with ease and charm. We will definitely be going back.

From the outset every little detail was of high quality, from the amouse Bouche to the cutlery accompanying each course. Flavours were outstanding and every course a culinary highlight. Service matched the excellence of the food, with the sommelier explaining the background to the wines, and even with a mystery wine that we had to guess. A superb evening.

As a treat we chose to try Restaurant 56 and what a great experience. From the moment we were welcomed by Prem (Restaurant Mgr) and his team to the last morsel of food and drop of wine - it was a joy!We chose the 7 course tasting menu and the wine trip which involved a sample of wines from all around the world. The range and combination of flavours and level of service made for a fabulous evening. The portion sizes were just right; we finished the evening pleasantly full. Nick Bennett's deserts were sublimeThe wine journey was especially interesting as the wines the Sommelier offered included areas of the world I had not tried - Oregon, Africa, East Europe. The descriptions provided and knowledge that the Sommeliers had made for interesting conversations and a wonderful tasting journey. The attention to detail was refined but not overbearing, the restaurant was nicely appointed and no one was wearing jeans! So spoil yourself and try Restaurant56 !!

Warm welcome from attentive staff who did not rush you but answered queries regarding items of menu with confidence. Open plan type of kitchen which allow customers a view of the chefs at work preparing their food. Good Sunday lunch menu with nice selection of nibbles and standard Sunday lunch main course. Sad to say we were all to full to taste the lovely desserts this time but will be back as it was worth the long road trip to visit.

Every time I eat here I am amazed that the Chef (Andrew Scott) manages to produce food of the highest standard. The taster menus have a great blend of textures and flavours and I would really recommend them to anyone who likes food of the highest standard. It is worth traveling some distance to dine there and there is one night a week (I think that it is Thursday) they offer a heavily discounted room in the adjacent 4 star) hotel to diners,It is fair to say that all the guests that I have taken there have been similarly impressed

A really very high quality experience. The owners have ensured that everything needed is available, and that there is plenty of space for different groups to use different rooms. All rooms are ensuite, and extra loos on ground and first floor. After the restoration, the place has been wonderfully furnished. Breakfasts were provided and were lovely.
