I needed a coeliac friendly quick and easy Friday lunch near the Arches. My first time here, shoestring staff were slightly scrambling to open at noon after a busy night (due to a national event) the previous day. Reviews had mentioned long waits and delivery orders getting priority, so I was early. Front of house was very personable, attentive, efficient and just the right amount of chatty. Able to help with recommendations not clear from the menu (e.g., you can skip the chips and pay less). The fish (I had hake) tasted spot fresh (clean, mild taste and flaked clean; cooked through perfectly but not overcooked). I asked and was told it's bought in frozen (presumably boat frozen, it was so fresh) and defrosted on site on the day of use. It came with fresh lemon, salt and vinegar (optional gluten free) and individual portion fresh tartare sauce included in the price. Love that the fryer is totally GF. I could taste that the batter was GF but I think most people would not realise (it's like a tempura batter). Possibly because I came early, the batter was oily -- this has to be because the oil wasn't as hot as it would have been 15 minutes later; nonetheless I felt my fish was safely cooked and lovely -- and it came promptly. Seating is basic but nice enough, inside and out. My seat of choice had a stain; staff dropped everything and cleaned it immediately and pleasantly. Negatives: No recycling bin (paper, plastic and food waste all go in one place). The door does slam loudly. Indeed, it was geared more toward takeaway pickup (despite ample seating) at lunch time. I was very impressed about how respectfully staff spoke to delivery drivers, who often get cold shouldered. All in all, I'll be back -- perhaps not so close to opening time, and bring some reading in case there was a wait (or peruse one of the well-thumbed GF cookbooks on the shelf). A sound place.

Tried for the first time, ordered via Deliveroo. Great attention to detail on my order - was given an extra box of chips as I had ordered fish without chips. Lovely message written on takeout box. Fish was crispy and added bonus of it being gluten-free! Solid chips too.

I was so excited to try this gluten-free place when in Bristol recently. We decided to eat in at one of the narrow tables they had - big mistake, as few people entering or leaving the establishment seemed to know how to close a door properly, so we were cold and constantly having to get up and close the door. Service was incredibly slow - at least four individuals / couples who came in after us received their food way before ours arrived. It seemed like orders for delivery were being prioritised before those from people wanting to eat in, which annoys me. When our meals eventually arrived, the chips were lukewarm and dried out, with a high proportion that had large black blemishes that should have been picked out before serving. The chicken nuggets were overcooked, making the chicken very dry and the coating like shrapnel. The battered halloumi was very, very greasy - I picked all the batter off and just ate the cheese, as I was hungry and tired after a long journey. We didn’t say anything while we were there, as the lone server was rushed off her feet and the delivery orders were pinging through with increasing frequency. The two good elements - the curry sauce was very tasty and gluten-free vinegar was provided. But that’s not enough to make me want to go back, unfortunately.

Best fish and chips and battered sausage in Bristol. Light batter. Delicious . I've not stopped telling everyone who will listen how good these were. Going to send my husband down Friday night for takeaway now that ciao burger have let us down by being closed. Looking forward to Friday already. This place was recommended by friends who live nearby. The website said that one needed to order in advance for collection but I just dropped in on the off chance. Staff were very friendly and welcoming as they took my order and told me how long I would be waiting - which was handy as I had a train to catch. The fish (cod) was delicious and the absolute mountain of chips were perfectly cooked and not in the least greasy. A nice added bonus was the inclusion of a free slice of lemon and a pot of very tasty tartare sauce. All in all an absolute winnerl! (As they say in these parts - or so I am led to believe.)

Soon as we walked in the door it felt familiar despite not every being there before. The manager was super welcoming and happy to have us eat inside although we were a big party. The chips are amazing!! And the calamari is like nothing else. Many thanks to the manager

We greatly enjoyed Friday night haddock, hake and scampi with chips from this place next to Sainsbury’s on the Gloucester Road. Peas were included in the deal and when we said we didn’t want them we were given a discount. About £30 for a feast for two. Quick service (about 15 mins). And very friendly.

Me and my boyfriend visited quite late on a saturday as we just were craving some of their lovely chips. We were again treated with such kind and friendly staff who we chatted to for a while. The food is so good! Keep it up❤️❤️

A lot of people in Bristol have recommended this fish and chip shop to me, So I had to go and give it a try for myself, so glad that I did, I ordered hake and chips with mushy peas. The food was amazing I haven’t had fish and chips in years this was a really good place to have it I highly recommend it to people now myself, staff are so friendly and kind The atmosphere in the restaurant is amazing so much people going in and out shows how good the food is 5stars

My name is Abdi and I seriously and highly recommend everyone to go to Reel Soul!!!! Forget 10/10, 1000000/10!!!!! That's how great Reel Soul is. Excellent dishes, lovely staff and great, welcoming environment. I rate this, the best chip shop in all of Bristol, period!!! Went there two weeks ago on a Saturday evening around 8pm. Different people and menu etc since i went there last. Assume it has changed hands? Worst fish and chips i have ever had. Was suspicious when there was no obvious sounds of frying - the fish was horrible - i can only think that it was a frozen battered fish (that you might buy in tesco's) definitely not battered on site. Chips tasted as though they had been cooked days prior. Never again. And to top it, two fish and chip cost me £23!!!!!!!! Dont normally write reviews, but felt i had to.........

Not sure why people have left bad reviews? My fish and chips have always been incredible from here. Food tastes as it should and is surely the best fish and chips in Bristol.

Felt compelled to write having just picked up a take away from there. (Bristol currently in Tier 3) Man behind the counter had a mask on his chin, not over nose or mouth, no gloves. Place didn't look or feel clean. (His mate came in he hugged him and they then started talking about the party they were going to attend after work together). £11 for a chips and 2 x sausages. Sausages completely inedible, hard and burnt, went straight in the bin, chips tasted like the oil hadn't been changed for a while. Truly awful. First and last visit.

TLDR: Sets a new level for mushy peas and curry sauce. The fish is top quality and a very fine portion. 9.4/10. The nights were drawing in and the evenings starting earlier and earlier. Winter’s upon us. There was one answer to this. Take aways. It was a gloomy Monday as the letter box was rattled by the postman proving the house with an answer to a question we had not even dreamed yet: Which chippy was the best in Bristol? The day had come, it was time to choose a place to order from. Wales were playing England in the Autumn Cup and there was a serious tension in the air. There were two things in this world able to solve this for the house: a good pun and a better chippy. Lucky Reel Soul is able to provide when needed. Was the first time ordering from here but we had walked passed the shop many times and had our expectations set. From what we’d seen we had high hops but NOTHING could prepare us for this meal. For £12 each (plus delivery) the delivery-person handed us what he called a meal but what can only be described as a lesson. Large Hake, chips, curry sauce, peas AND a can of drink. The VERY generous portion fish was covered in a light, crispy batter, with a bed of fluffy chips. The two sides provided were curry sauce and peas. The peas were nothing short of extraordinary. High quality with a fine glazing of what I’d assume to be garlic butter, it just melts in your mouth. Never had I had such nice peas and I doubt I’ll ever be able to recreate it. Now for the curry sauce. Well... I thought I knew chippy curry sauce but Reel Soul has set the bar. I have no way to describe this. You’ll have to try it for yourself but trust me, you won’t be disappointed. As from the review, I’m sure you won’t be shocked by my rating: 9.4/10. It drops .6 simply because the bottom was partly stuck to the grease proof paper. In a perfect would the batter would be crispy all the way round and I doubt this will be able to be achieved in a takeaway. But we can dream.

A really poor experience, on entry to the shop we placed our order, we asked for cheese on the chips and the man serving snapped back very rudely ‘ we have none you can’t’ we asked politely if they do gravy to which he stated ‘ no we don’t and we never will’ again in an extremely rude tone’. So we ordered two sausage and chips. Whilst waiting the man was lent over the counter on his mobile phone watching videos loudly the whole time with his mask half off and not covering his nose. Dispute there being no screens. So we left already sure we wouldn’t return and just hoping that at least the food would be worth the £10 we paid ( which is already extortionately priced!). We opened the box to find the sausage burnt to a crisp, I have never had anything like it! Utterly revolting and horrible to taste. In this time we should be supporting local business but sadly we shall not be extending our support to this Business.

The staff at Reel Soul were so incredibly rude to both me and my friend, who was shouted at by staff, and I am so disgusted by their customer service. The staff were rude, passive aggressive and even HUNG UP ON ME when I was trying to rectify their mistake on the phone! To give them their dues the food is semi decent but still a big disapointment considering the price and the attitude you recieve. My order was messed up/misread, I recieved one piece of regular cod without the chips and peas I ordered and paid extra for. A totally understandable, if frustrating, mistake however when I phoned the resteraunt to let them know and see if they could help I was met with rudeness and reluctance. I was told that, whilst they were sorry, the fish I was given was more expensive than what I ordered as some kind of excuse, the woman was extremely unhelpful. Eventually she agreed to give me a portion of chips if I came to the resteraunt and collected it (during a lockdown when many people ordering takeaway are doing so to support small businesses like Reel Soul) Before I could respond to say I would pick up I was hung up on. I called them back and told them I would be at the shop shortly to pick up my order. When I arrived and told them my name and why I was there I was met with evil stares from the staff especially the woman behind the till who spoke to me on the phone. When I told her I was disapointed with how she spoke to me she was extremely rude and simply told me that "I can think what I want" when I subsequently told her I was leaving a bad review she told me to "do whats best for yourself" with much hostility. The man in the back was also aggresive and shouted at my friend who was with me when she said she was disapointed with the service too. I left angry, insulted and wishing I had never given my money to this business. I am absolutely disgusted and could not urge people enough to not buy from this establishment.

Amazing gluten free foods. I visited here many times in the past but forgot about Deliveroo during lockdown. I ordered the Haddock and a battered sausage with chips. Arrived 30mins after placing the order and the food was delightful. Also the curry sauce was amazing....
