Reed Street Fisheries in Kirklees

Smelled awful due to the use of stale/old oil….seriously barely edible! The fish wasn’t fresh albeit it was made fresh as & when ordered. The chips were dry (& I don’t mean crispy) on the edges ie. NOT fresh. The curry sauce was lumpy. NOT an accurate reflection on the high than ordinary positive reviews on Google. It’s a sad, crying shame as this experience ruined our rare Saturday night in…….i needn’t say, I shall NOT be going back..!!!

Always good fish and chips, fish was all cooked fresh, as we're the chips, not just getting given food that's been in there hours. Pleasant people working there. They take card as well as cash which is a bonus

Tried a fish and a scollop, got to be honest both were quite tasty, both were a little on the greasy side, but that's fish n chips for you. If they could reduce the oil/grease it would be perfect 👌🏼 Not the worse I've had, but also not the best.. tasty though.

Food was bang on. Chips were fresh and tasty. Fish was juicy and very tasty. I almost didn't come here because of two dodgy reviews but I can assure you the food is lush.

I was soo looking forward to having a portion of fish n chips from this shop as it has been a while but I’m sorry to say I was really 😞 disappointed! Although I placed the order in advance both the fish and chips especially the chips were over cooked to the point the chips were hard and dry no matter how much curry sauce (large) I put on not forgetting the salt and vinegar. The 2 ladies that served me were amazing but I’m afraid to say I will not be purchasing fish and chips from here again. Unfortunately there was an after taste of stale oil also after this😞😞😞

Had fish chips from here few times been nice,but today's was dry like cooked and left with fish chips was dry batter wasn't very nice,shame really as one bad fish chips can put u off going and not cheap meal to be not enjoying it.the lady who served us was lovely and friendly.

August 2024: Found a piece of yellow plastic film in my food, plus the chips were overcooked, brown and quite tough. Disappointing today. 2023: Please try and locate to a bigger shop if you can, the shop its cramped for both customers and staff which his a shame, but good advertising when the queue is winding down the street!! Great food, good portions, and always busy on a Friday evening. 2022: I've had fish and chips from this shop a few times now and they' are much better than any other I've tried in Huddersfield so far, and Ive tried quite q few. The food is lovely and the curry sauce is delicious, very tasty, spot on and the portions are just right so you won't end up wasting any food. I'd highly recommend this chip shop. Next time I'll take a picture of the food and add it onto this review.

Chips were spot on would highly recommend giving this place a try plenty of staff and quick service food was hot and fresh can’t really ask for more from your local chip shop. The menu has plenty of options and they also take card which is a bonus when you’re not carrying any money.

Staff always pleasant, and food always spot on here. They love to whind each other up. Many thanks i will keep coming back for my 2 sausages and other items, before i forget love your chipshop curry sauce.

Great chippy, decent fish, fry in dripping still, decent sausages. Loads of chippies have been taken over and ruined by people reducing the quality of everything and changing the dripping to cheap veg oil, these guys kept the ingredients top notch, highly recommended!

Staff are dishonest,the young girl with the glasses who does the frying and the tall boy with cornrows,lie about the fish sizes,just to get rid of the fish at the end of the night,I asked for a large fish,they said it was large (it was small), it's down to the weight the boy said,it wasn't, another two occasions I've been in,had old fish given,hard on the edges,chips just left on top of the fryer going cold,while waiting for a fish to be cooked(as refused a small fish masquerading as a large one), terrible people, probably following the owners instructions,but I'm disabled, don't get out much,fish and chips is a once a week treat for me,and is quite expensive, don't expect the poor service and dishonesty

When I first moved to marsh 2 years ago I honestly wasn’t a fan the food was always greasy (2021/2022) So left it for abit and it got nice and began going regularly for mine and the kids food and had no issues until today Casually eating my dinner chip butty sausages curry sauce and as I was chew the sausage bits of white plastic kept coming out 🤮🤢 I’ve had a battle with food recently due to allergy’s so this place was one of my safety food places. Not no more won’t be returning that alone is enough to put me off for good Now to hope I didn’t swallow none

Since moving to Huddersfield with the ambulance service I've frequently visited Reed Street Chippy a little diamond in thr rough to be fair ,hot fresh food reasonably priced , i have to say that never ever once have I not been greeted with a smile,spoken to and engaged with ,a lovely local chippy with a wonderful feel to it ,i feel like a family member and not a customer. Thank you for a fish butty and a battered sausage,you're all great 👍

These are the best fish and chips in Huddersfield and anywhere in the UK I think! Even if you go to the seaside, it's not a patch on these guys. They fry in dripping, proper. Not sure what the reviewer was on about with "hard batter". Don't you know that things do go crispy when fried, duh! Try some vinegar to soften it. Good portion size, beautiful batter, tasty fish and excellent chips. It's a bit pricey, but all proper chippies are now.

We had American visitors over and we got them fish and chips from there.They loved talking to the staff and thought the food was great.

I bought a fish and chips from here and it was horrible the chips was very skabby and hard and the fish was just batter not much fish in it at all I won't be going here ever again I've never tasted fish and chips like this ever they was absolutely disgusting and when I went in to tell them I got a load of verbal abuse and seen the man slicing his fish in half to get 2 portions out of 1 fish that's y the fish is mainly batter which is very greasy

I was looking forward to these fish &chips because someone recommended them. The chips were scraps. The fish was fresh, but the batter was hard. Not sure if they're cooked in beef drip didn't taste like it. It's a rarity these days to find a good fish shop. Sorry, I won't be returning.

Ohhh my literally transported back to my childhood, when fish and chips made you smack your lips. Called in on our way home to Manchester and ordered chips, a battered sausage and a nostalgic bag of fish scraps.. The sausage was large and cooked to perfection and the chips yumyumyum. Staff were exceptional 👌

fish was great in the fish and chips but they keep the smaller skinny fish for the fish buttys ?!? So basically you paying for batter in a bun! Both fish and Chip where greasy but the chips arnt the worse around here if I’m honest! Thought we'd try Reed Street fisheries today as we've seen alot of people outside and we're new to the area.. chips are so greesy but the portion size is good Sausage was yummy Gravy is lovely Not keen on the curry sauce Bread was lovely and soft Scollop isn't for me Fish big but also very greesy (Literally eating and reviewing at the same time) Hence the 3 stars its not the worst but also not the best could do with abit of improving

The food was good, the people were nice however, they are not honest people!!! Bloody thief!!! Told me a figure for the price but charged a bit more off of my card just because I said I didn't want a receipt. Its a shame really because the food was actually nice 😕 next time I'll be paying cash only and double checking it before leaving!

Best fish an chips in Huddersfield

My husband and I visited Reeds fish and chip shop on 15th April 2021 for lunch. As it was a nice day, we decided to sit outside and eat them. I ordered 2 small portions of fish and chips. The batter on the fish wasn't crisp and soggy and the chips tasted as though they had just been warmed up and were very greasy. That same night my husband became very sick and I too had a very bad stomach upset. We have tried Reeds before and they were disappointing then but we thought things may have improved since lockdown. That said, the establishment is very clean. I think maybe they cook too many chips at once and some customers get the older chips. I would have mentioned it to the proprietor but I think this will be the last time we visit Reeds.

Just had fish and chips for the first time from here. Normally go to Mother Hubbard's but find the chips are really fat. These were hands down better. Freshly cooked, big portions and really tasty. Will definitely be back.

Just purchased 4 lots of fish and chips for the family. These were the worst ever I've had from this chippy. In fact they were quite horrid so not sure what's happened. The quality and amount of fish inside was very poor. The chips were so dry it was as though they were old and had been re-fried.

Had Fish n chips wi bits...freshly cooked,lovely crispy batter,good size fish,nice n flakey and tasty,chips were perfectly cooked,good value and washed down with proper glass bottled irn bru... definitely eat from the again

I visit this chip shop quite often and on many occasions, the fish and chips is of an excellent standard. On other occasions, however, such as tonight, the fish was mediocre at best. It was definitely not haddock and was thin, dense and tasteless and similar to the consistency (and taste) of the cheap frozen (pollock) fish fingers we recently bought for our grandson. Needs to be more consistently good.

As a treat on a Friday I like to have the occasional fish and chips and this is the place I go friendly staff and quick service.

I'd say average. Chips are either overcooked or rather greasy. Fish is alright but there's better in the area.

This has always been my go to chippy whenever we’ve fancied some. Tonight we have just eaten the worst ones ever. Batter was so dark and dry like it had been re-cooked several times, fish dry and discoloured. You couldn’t even tell what the chips were just burnt crispy bits. I’ll never have anything from here again.

Love AJ's fish and chips! Always top form, very cheap compared to most others in the area and always a lovely bit of banter with the staff! I would highly recommend this place. Can usually feed 3 of us for £10. Keep up the good work guys!

Visited two days ago - we visit most weeks. We live in what was Lancashire, but you can't get fish and chips cooked in beef dripping. We have scoured Wets Yorkshire and been in most fisheries in Huddersfield, eventually finding this gem. There is plenty of competition with one 50 yards down the road, with another 200 yards away. This fishery has a very high standard which is consistent. The food is well cooked and portions err on the side of huge. Many staff work behind the counter over a period of time, but whoever you get - they are always very friendly. Cheap, brilliant and well worth the trek.

I have not had fish and chips for a while and thought that we would have a treat over the Easter Holidays. The fish and chips were inedible. The fish was cold and chewy and the chips weren't much better. Very dissatisfied, would never go there again. The Dog was happy, but even he still struggled to chew the fish!
