Redruth Meadery in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Everything is great, but the Redruth meadery is not known for it's food. Not to say it's not good, but it is pretty average. In all other aspects, the Redruth meadery is great and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering it.

Booked here as came highly recommended by several friends , we also invited some friends to join us for the evening, however the experience did not get off to a good start when I ordered a pint of bitter shandy & was brought a pint of bitter in a pint glass & a half of lemonade in a separate glass to mix my own..was not expecting that...our 4 main meals took over a hour to arrive, which really is unacceptable seemed to have inexperienced staff & very short staffed. Out of 4 meals ...3 were terrible. 2 rump steaks ordered both were very tough & could not eat , mushrooms deep fried over cooked & full of fat dripping out of them....peppercorn sauce was forgotten had to ask for it again that arrived so thick it would not tip out little jug onto the steak, scampi was very poor cheap quailty & completely tasteless. The lasagne was homemade & enjoyed, so 3 disappointing meals out of 4, felt very embarrassed that we invited our friends out & they had such a awful disappointing meals overall a disastrous evening..so sadly won't be returning or recomending to anyone.

Great food, well organised as we were a large party. Friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Made special potato salad and coleslaw for me as a vegan. Great for all ages.

This place is excellent. I ate the chicken in the rough to quickly to take a photo of. Excellent option to have a smaller portion of the bigger mains and also have a 3 course children's meal... so I did manage to get a photo of the children's desert....

Good mead, nice authentic feel to the place but a 45 minute to an hour wait time on food as a bit much. Seemed understaffed as could see the staff on were struggling to keep up with what was going on. Ribs were not good as were really chewy (so probs frozen and quickly cooked). But the fried chicken was pretty good so we shared that instead of the ribs. All in all an okay place, just needs some work

Great evening..was very busy but food plenty and good..staff very attentive and friendly...timing between courses just right especially as we had two young children with us who didn't have time to get restless..enjoyed the ambience..shall definitely return

A very mixed bag during my visit, really. Upon booking a table we were told they close at 9pm, so we booked earlier than we planned, ending up arriving at 1930. Our table was not ready at this time, so we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. We sat and someone arrived to take our drinks order despite still waiting for two late arrivals, so we asked the waitress to come back once everyone had arrived. They ended up not coming back for drinks orders until 1955, which meant we had an hour to order and eat our food (we were a table of 9!) - which I presume was the reason why we were asked for a dessert order before we had even had starters! We said we did not know and to ask again after the main meal. Our table water and glasses were all dumped at the corner of the table next to me, meaning I was the one serving the table their glasses and water not the waitress as it should have been. The food is clearly deep fried from frozen because one batch of breaded mushrooms was stone cold in the middle - although these were replaced quickly and without any fuss. All other starters were fine. The main meals were generously portioned cooked well, and the chicken skin was incredibly crispy and tasty. Unfortunately, the offer of dessert was not given again. This isn't the first time I've been here, and this time unfortunately the service levels have fallen right off. The food itself was great (other than the mushroom saga) but I feel like the staff members are all too inexperienced (they were all incredibly young) and it really shows.

We found the whole experience unpleasant, everything you touch was either sticky or greasy, seating was very small for 5 adults and extremely hard. Their original business model is pile it high and sell it cheap. Not for me I'm afraid.

We booked for 5 people and were seated in a booth just big enough for 4. It was obvious that it was 'tight' but instead of moving us to the bigger booty next to us, they sat a couple in there. The waiter was very pleasant but seemed unfamiliar with the ordering system and got part of the order wrong. This was sorted when we paid. The salad, which is an extra charge and not explained at the time of ordering, was disappointing. The rest of the meal was fine. More could be done with the tables and food service to make it a meadery rather than an ex church with a few flags and plaques. Parking is difficult too.

Food was good. Service was great, and Atmosphere and theming was amazing. Found on Google when looking for somewhere to purchase Mead, we had to drove through redruth to get home from Lands End. Without paying too much attention I began our journey. Redruth Meadery did not disapoint. The medieval theming and vibe is spot on. A bustling busy resturuant that felt like stepping back in time. We were greeted in a friendly maner and were given somewhere to sit dispite not having a booking and also having a pushchair. We were sat down very quickly. Service was friendly and snappy. Our waitress took our order and drinks arrived in no time at all. Food soon followed. Food was good, adequate and satisfactory. Not fine dining by any means but delicious and generously portioned I had the Fried chicken with chips and salad my wife had the scampi. A highlight was the selection of mead, a tasting board was had. And when the hubub and noise of the other diners occasionall lulled down you could here the medoeval background music. Overall I had great time. I would definately return again and really recommend Redruth Meadery for the whole family. Definately book ahead so you dont get disapointed.

One of my favourite places to eat but we had not visited since before covid. Nothing had changed. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival. We had not booked but they were able to accommodate us. Excellent atmosphere, staff and food.

The food was lovely but the service was not ! We had pre-ordered our food but…………. We waited 1 hour 10 minutes for our main course and only after asking why it was taking so long were we told‘ we are just plating it up now’ God only knows how long it would have taken if we hadn’t asked ? We never had to wait that long at the Trewelard meadery.

My parents enjoyed their food, and we were pleasantly surprised by the vegan options.. very tasty. However It was way too hot upstairs and no air flow, made worse by not being offered any additional drinks to the ones we ordered with our meal. We were given our food, mum asked for an extra plate.. we didn't see a waitress after this and didn't get the plate, weren't offered desserts or anymore drinks. Was nice but the service just fell a bit short.... The staff were NICE just didn't see them enough..

Fantastic place, that my family have visited on trips to visit our Cornish family over the years. I It certainly has a big element of authenticity about it , with parts of the menu ie the choice of meads and chicken in thr rough dish to the historic origin of the restraunt . But certainly it keeps upto date with more modern things such as onion rings and missisipi mud pie. Atmosphere was very pleasant, very authentic feel with the medieval interior which I got the impression was close to the original . Staff are helpful , very pleasant and attentive . Would definitely reccomend, and will be back.

The food was lovely and staff were polite and we didn't wait to long either. The only issue was the noise.Children running around upstairs like a heard of Elephants.Parents had no control.Awful.Maybe an idea for a Manger to step in at this point.We left early

Unfortunately our meal was spoilt by parents who cannot control their children.We visited Redruth Meadery and had a lovely meal.This staff were lovely.Kids above us on 2nd floor were running up and down the aisles making alot of noise and shouting so we left early.Not a problem with the restaurant but these people need a reality check. Meadery is still a nice place shame about certain customers

Had a lovely meal with my lad last night, food was of great quality and the service second to none! The waitresses were very attentive and easy on the eye! Hoping to go back 🙏 soon

I've been going here for years, and it used to be a great place for a cheap meal, but now it's quite expensive for just deep-fried cheap food.

Having been to this Meadry a few times now, it has become a firm family favourite for a relaxing and fun meal out. On booking I requested a specific table due to various medical issues and they were more than happy to accommodate. The food is fantastic and delicious, server's are pleasant and hard working. For me personally I love the whole theme and atmosphere, from the uniforms to the wooden plates. It all adds to the fun and enjoyment. I have and will continue to recommend others to this establishment.

Not as it is used to be. Good and atmosphere is still good and nice. But, service was very slow. Waited for an hour for our food to be brought to the table and one of the meals wasn’t brought as requested. Asked for chicken with mix of chips and salad, but only chips came with chicken and when asked a waiter he just brought us a plate and told us to get salad from downstairs.

tried mead for the first time in my life here and loved it!! ordered smoked mackerel and it was really good. this is the only place where you can enjoy the medieval atmosphere.

As there are no other restaurants in Redruth we booked for the Saturday night as we were staying in the town. Very busy as one would expect with no restaurant choices! The food was mainly deep fried with chips. Large portions - acceptable quality but not what was expected of a 'Medieval' themed restaurant.

Had a delicious meal with friends here last night. Plenty of food, you can't go hungry here. Attentive staff and quick service. Well done!

Friend booked online and they returned an email with a time. Table ready when we got in. Prawn cocktail was delicious. Chicken with half chips/salad was very very filling. Rocky toffee afters was incredibly sweet, which was what I wanted :) Service was good, mead was delicious. Friendly staff. Good giggle with the lady while paying and they were very appreciative of our tip. Great experience. Yes it's not the most modern venue but they are recreating a medieval era dining experience. Anything ultra modern would look out of place. Tremendous amount of food. My friend's Scampi was piled very high! Toilet was clean when I visited too. Will be back to this meadery.

Haven't been to Redruth Meadery for a long time, seems to of improved a lot since then. Menu is much better than other Meaderys in Cornwall. Food was great really enjoyed it. Waitresses were fab, especially the girl that brought us our drinks.

Visited here with friend recently. First impressions were disappointing with the restaurant entrance looking very tired. Things didn’t get much better once inside, the service was ok, atmosphere in the restaurant was flat and food quality very average. Menu said they pride themselves on locally sourced fresh food, to me it felt as if it was more of the pre prepared frozen variety. I also think it would be much more hygienic if they provided each person on the table with a finger cleaning bowl, not just one for everyone. If you want the kind of food offered here I think you would be better off heading to your local cheap and cheerful chain such as Wetherspoons. You will save yourself some money and probably enjoy a more tasty meal. I think the meadery was probably a really fun restaurant once upon a time, however I feel like it needs a bit of a revamp to compete with the ever growing crop of quality Cornish eateries popping up all over the county.

Great dining experience, dressed in medieval clothes and ate like we were in the medieval times. The mead wine was a perfect end to the evening. Could even buy some to take home. Even our 4 kids enjoyed it. Food was cooked fresh and was hot and very tasty. There wasn’t a rush to finish your meals/drinks. Highly recommended

Lovely surprise party for my husband. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. However, we had over an hours wait for our food from the order being taken, and only half of the meals came out. It was then a further half hour before the rest of the party of 17 meals came out. When paying our bill, I was told the wait with the meals was due to an accident in the kitchen. None of the waiting staff relayed that information to us, and no real apology or jester of goodwill was offered. The food was lovely, and we all love a good family get-together at the meadery. It's been many years since I had last been, as we had been living out the county. So yes, we'll go back. Hopefully, the staff will be better trained and the chef is ok after the accident. One question: What happened to the small salad garnishes? The leaf of lettuce, slice of cucumber, and slice of tomato? I know it's only a little thing, but the plates looked like they were missing something 😕

Basic food but good quantities and cooked well. Scampi is amazing...cooked to perfection and the most you've probably ever been served! Enjoyed the cherry mead fizz. It was a busy Friday night, so very noisy ...it made it incredibly difficult to hear the waitresses and hear conversations!! But I guess that reflects the reality of medieval banquets. I enjoyed the night and would visit again for a hearty meal.

Just spent an absolutely wonderful evening at the Redruth Meadery! The staff are amazing and extremely polite. We had a slight issue with a steak being overcooked, it was sorted very quickly and staff came to check that it had been cooked correctly the second time! Food was fantastic and very well priced. We got sent home with any leftover food and the desserts we desperately wanted (one of which was on the house due to the steak issue) we haven't managed them yet but im sure they're as good as the look! Thank you to all the wonderful staff, myself and my wife will certainly be visiting again!

Not been for a few years but wanted something different for a birthday meal treat. Sunday night, just walked in and ordered a takeaway. Friendly staff as I remember and even told me about the app so can order in advance and arrange a collection time (nice to know). Didn't have to wait long for my order (5 adult meals (Chicken in the rough, Scampi and Jalapeño bites) plus a couple of sides). The extra sauces were kept out of the bags so they didn't get squashed (nice touch). Got the food home and everything piping hot and fresh. Amazing portion sizes and tasted amazing. Thanks guys and gals...was an amazing meal.

Booked the meadery tonight for our first ever visit. It won't be our last. Beth took our order promptly, meals were hot and such large portions. My crumbed mushrooms was excellent and hubby had scampi. We was both full and satisfied. Very reasonably priced. Salad...

Had my worst experience eating out by being given the beef lasagne instead of the vegetarian one. I asked the waitress if it was the vegetarian one before it was given to me and realised that it wasn't on my second mouthful. When I asked again and showed it to the staff I was told no it wasn't and was really quite upset about it. A member of staff spoke to their boss, waived the fee for it, brought out a vegetarian one and apologised, which was acceptable but the owner/manager never came over to apologise or check if I was OK? I had lost my appetite by then and was only able to eat a couple of mouthfuls and I felt they didn't fully understand just how awful a mistake like that is and how it can potentially be quite serious if someone has food allergies or religious reasons for not eating certain foods? I highlighted it to the person ( owner/manager?) who I believe was in charge and took payment for my drink but they gave a lukewarm apology and told me that mistakes happen. I said that this had never happened to me anywhere before and it was actually quite a big mistake especially as I had asked at the time they gave it to me if it was the vegetarian one. At which point she said "No way" I asked her what she meant by "no way" and was told that no way did that happen as the waitress was a vegetarian and would never have given it to me knowing I was one as well! I stated that I definitely asked the question and was then once again told "No way!" I was really shocked by the attitude and suggestion that I was a liar and said that I couldn't believe that she was actually standing there calling me a liar! She then accused me of shouting at her and a lady from our table interjected and said that I definitely did ask the question as she had heard me, to which she was also told "no way"! She again said that I did as she, her partner and three other people had heard me! The woman mumbled something about already having apologised but was obviously not interested and was trying to make me look like I was the one causing a problem! I told her that her apology was worthless (as she was clearly not sorry at all) and that I would never step foot in there again! I have never experienced such dreadful customer service and am totally appalled by this lady's lack of empathy and downright disgusting attitude!

If I could give a minus 5 I would ! Went with some friends from work. Firstly the young girl who came to the table was not very engaging she asked for our drinks order as we were last to get there. She stood staring...

Over all the portions were enormous and good food. The atmosphere was fun and we loved the mead selection. I unfortunately service and time management let the meadery down. We were told to arrive earlier than we had originally booked because our group was quite large. We were split across 2 tables. One table was left waiting 40 mins for their mains, the other table were served dessert at the same time we had our mains! I had to ask passing staff for a drinks order multiple times, one young lady said she couldn't remember the 2 drinks we asked for and would send someone back with a tablet. No one ever came back! With a few tweaks and more attention to the upstairs guests this could be a fabulous place to eat out.

Celebrating my niece's birthday, the food was amazing, the atmosphere was buzzing and great service. Love the meadery!!!

This place is best for groups of friends or family I think. These meaderies have never been particularly cheap, but I thought our last visit was expensive considering the menu is fairly limited.

We visited the meadery at Calbourne Cornwall last night with family. We had the chicken in the rough which is half a chicken with chips and an optional salad from the salad bar. This was followed by a death by chocate desert witch was boxed...

Portion size was good!!waiting time was short and all tasted amazing

Terrible service waited 1hour and half for our main and the lasagne was dry so the manager shoved her hand in it to prove it wasn't but it was just grease on her hand penzance a lot better

A very nice change to celebrate my Wife's birthday, the meal was very good and filling with chicken all round but you have lost one star due to the quality of the chips, before I retired i used to sell them, either you did your own or they were poor quality bought in, put the price up and get 5 stars next time.

Really lovely building and decorated fantastically inside! Medieval themed to the point the staff are even dressed up! There's two floors with tonnes of seats however they are a tight squeeze. 6 of us went on Saturday night and it was really tight with barely any room to move on the table. We would have preferred being seated at a bigger table for comfort of ease. The staff overall were really friendly and knowledgeable. The menu choice isn't very big but a decent range overall although only one vegetarian option (spicy bean burger) we had jalapeno poppers to start which were a very generous size and scorching hot, really tasty! The wedges and blue cheese dip were also chosen, the dip was really tiny though so we asked for another one. We all had a rack of ribs and chicken in the rough for our mains. The BBQ ribs were absolutely delicious! Thick meat, drenched in a really flavoursome BBQ sauce. Highly recommend them! The chicken in the rough though, was exactly that. It looked overcooked and was really dry. Literally needed a sip of drink with every mouthful just to get it down. Wouldn't recommend that unfortunately. Due to the staff being a man down in the kitchen, we had to wait an hour between starters and mains which we know couldn't be helped but because it was so busy in there, we were sat squeezed together, it got pretty hot and uncomfortable pretty quickly. The mead was a nice experience to try, the strawberry flavor was very sickly but the BlackBerry flavor was lush. You can mix it with lemonade if it's too strong. They also provide a small salad bar which had a nice selection of food. I'd recommend sharing one between two of you as the dish size again is generous. Overall it was a really cool experience and I'd definately recommend visiting but avoid the chicken!

We were unlucky as the night we visited they only had one chef on due to sickness. However communication was very poor leaving us fuming over the long waits. They messed up our food orders twice , but to be fair we did enjoy the food and mead. The place is very uncomfortable and hasn't really been updated since I last visited over 20 years ago.

Couple of mistakes with our order , excellent hot food all freshly cooked , salad all fresh even at end if day .

Wonderful experience and atmosphere. The staff were friendly, polite and attentive. The food was mediocre and the menu was misleading leading to a big bill that did not match the quality of the food. With one exception wich was was the salad bar, which was excellent, but as its not listed on the menu we didn't know how much it cost till after we ate. Wouldn't go back
