I would recommend their dim sum, generous size, nice and hot. Pretty expensive though therefore missing a star.

Had dinner here tonight, tried to force me to pay service charge.

OVER-PRICED, ABYSMAL SERVICE - Since they have expanded they are unable to keep up with customers, you are rushed in and rushed out. My friend and I dined there yesterday evening and the service was abysmal. Our order was taken incorrectly not once but THREE times. We had three different servers who did not listen/did not understand the issue. My friends main came out with our sides of rice but we had no chop sticks/cutlery for around ten minutes. My main didn't arrive for another 20 minutes and in the meantime, one of our side dishes never arrived. We kept being given duck spring rolls despite not wanting them and not ordering them! In the end the waitress just gave them away to a neighbouring table for free. The server actually came back to argue that we had ordered duck spring rolls. I myself don't meat and we only ordered fish items from the menu. We asked to speak to the manager and all he did was laugh and gave my friend a free beer, didn't even acknowledge me! We left feeling drained (emotionally and financially!) we spent £60 on what was over-priced food with terrible service. We will never eat there again and I will actively be discouraging others from wasting their money there when there are much better restaurants in Oxford. The food was okay but not worth the hassle and money. If you want decent, authentic Chinese food, just go across the road to Cafe Orient. They have never gotten my order wrong and the service is much better! Ps. I never write reviews but we were so upset I had to in order to make sure others don't go through what we went through!

I heard from a friend that Red Star Chinese Food has expanded its store and added Northeastern big pot stew. The day before yesterday, our two families excitedly went to try it. The result was a big disappointment. There were only a dozen or so small pieces of short ribs in the big pot of braised pork ribs. The quantity was too small. Such a small quantity was sold for 58 pounds per pot! A money grab?

No bad food but very bad attendance,they have no organisation to serve,let you to complain every last order,also they try to force you to pay cash. Absolutely the worst place that i gone in this country so far.

90 minutes for food, Ruined meal, so many apologies from the FOH team it bored me to sleep Don’t go to red star, its become too big, with only interested is giving you a terrible meal, taking your money. I’m looking forward to not wasting my time with red star & going to a restaurant with tasty food next time

First thing to get out of the way: remember to bring cash! One of the best oriental cuisine around Oxford! Super tasty and the portion sizes were very generous - great value for your money’s worth. Authentic food which filled and warmed our stomach greatly. We really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. Will definitely come back to try even more dishes - there’s such a huge variety! The floor was a little oily but other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. Staff were friendly too (though the cashier was a bit grumpy…)

The waitresses could not have been more helpful. Suggesting alternative dishes. The food so good. 😋. Giant portions. The family trait is to over order. Somehow the 2 of us consumed enough for 4. Completely satisfied. 🙂

Price was fair, food was good. But bad service regarding 10% fee when using card. No sign outside showing only cash. 10% is absolutely ridiculous.

Fish with hot chilli oil was so salty that made us felt sick. Please do not order! Waitress refused to take our comment, or send the dish back. She blamed us not eating with rice. Not the kind of service we expected.

Authentic Northeastern cuisine, the proprietress is from Dalian. Looking at the menu boards on the wall and the plates (no bowls 🤣), you can tell that it is a proper Northeastern flavor. The ones I ordered today are all authentic.

I am totally disappointed with the service of this restaurant. Today, I booked the table for 8 people at 6pm. Me and my friend came at 6.05 pm and were waiting for the others who came late. So, we decided to ordered food and drink first while we were calling to others to tell them about the situation of the very busy restaurant and urge them to come as quickly as possible. The waitress always pointed at my table and talked with her colleagues in Chinese that we couldn't understand what happened. We waited for the food about 20 minutes until it was served and I don't want to mention about the texture as different people have different tastes. Then, in 6.50pm, one person came, she talked with the waitress and they changed the table for my group in the downstairs without noticing me while we were still eating and waiting at the table. Additionally, they moved 2 guys sitting at my reserved table and spoke with us in Chinese although we didn't understand. Next, Not until new customers came at around 7.10pm, did the waitress come to me and tell me to go downstairs to join with 6 other friends. We were very angry at that time but tried to be nice and asked her if we could finish the food within 15 minutes and then we left. When we left, this waitress still talked with me in Chinese, which made me uncomfortable.

I came to Oxford to visit my friend and we wanted to celebrate the Lunar New Year as we are from Vietnam and we missed our families, especially when Tet holiday comes and we reunion. We searched this restaurant from Google and we would like to try because of the reasonable price and also the close location with my friend's accommodation. The food was oily and the service was absolutely bad when the waitresses found it hard to manage tables, order and customers. They moved tables even when customers were sitting and eating. They tried to accept new customers though the restaurant was definitely full.

Very authentic. Great asian Chinese Good.. All cooked fresh and piping hot. Fast service, ideal if you don't have a lot of time.

I've been to this place a few times and the food is overall tasteful and ok. Yesterday, I had a take away and I found a red cap from a bottle as the pic shows. I believe it did happen accidentally but please be more mindful and slow down when processing orders. I have seen people running around to process orders but slow down.. it's fine if the orders come with a minute delay ... quality over speed

It is the best northeast style Chinese restaurant in UK! We come from London and stayed Oxford for a weekend. It definitely tastes better than all in London. Every dish was amazing. I wish they open one in London someday. You need to make reservation in advance. We were there on Saturday night and this place is on fire! so popular!

Don’t be tricked by the positive reviews!!! Me and my daughter came to Oxford as tourists and wanted some Chinese food since we are Chinese. We came in and there were no problems till we ordered the ganguo chicken. So recently I’ve been unable to have spicy food due to medical reasons, and I asked before when we were ordering if the food was spicy. The waitress said only a little bit not much. And I made it clear that a little was ok but I can’t handle a lot. They said ok no problem and our other dishes came soon after. But once the chicken came I took a bite and it was unbelievably spicy and tough. Even my daughter who eats spicy Mexican food found the food to be uneatable. I let them know that it was way too spicy and a guy who I assumed was the boss came out. They kept asking me if I specified I didn’t want spicy and I told them to ask the waitress. The waitress talked with the others and looked around for my order to see if she wrote it on there. And lo and behold she did. But instead of admitting the mistake they instead started to gaslight me saying “I should have told them no spicy at all”. I responded by saying I made it clear I couldn’t handle spicy food and that I shouldn’t have to say that, what I said was enough. So I asked for it to be redone. And since I understand Chinese i heard the boss say “oh just do something to it don’t remake it” to the girl taking the chicken away. I told them that they would have to remake it since the dish was so spicy and the chicken soaked up all the chili. But they didn’t listen and when the dish came back it was just as spicy. They took some peppers out and just gave us the same dish back. And they constantly kept coming to the table saying “ oh well next time you’ll tell us u can’t have spicy”. Their attitude was horrible I will never come back.

Delicious food, friendly and fast service!

Love this place so authentic amazing food with a menu that is so different to other Chinese restaurants. Very laid back but busy atmosphere always busy but we always seem to get a table walking in. Lovely staff never had a bad meal here all such fresh tasty food and very reasonable. Set meals about £11.50 rice and main and noodles. Lots of Chinese families eat here which is lovely to see. Been open a long time now and always the same standard - beautiful

Updated review. Red Star has had a makeover and I’m pleased to say it’s as good as ever. Gone have the long tables in the front which I kinda liked (you would end up sitting next to strangers when they were busy) but they have been replaced with comfy booths. They have a great selection of food, plenty of traditional dishes and the standard ‘British Chinese restaurant’ fare. My friends and I really enjoyed it and will definitely be going back soon. Excellent food and great value. Cash only!

If you enjoy spicy food, this restaurant is a good place to go. Overall, the food is good. However, there are some flies and it's quite disturbing. Toilet is clean though. Staff are nice.

Good spicy ramen lovely place for a lunch date

One of the worst delivery experiences ever. Sweet chilli sauce was salty as sea water.. korean beef? it was like a soft clammy smelly thing, really terrible full of fat, no meat not even in one piece.. I threw it all away.... Chicken satay? the worst ever.. satay sauce? no way this was a satay sauce... It seemed like the food was cooked by a 5 year old experimental little chef ... I mean i have no words. And on top for 1 starter , prawn crackers and two mains I paid 45 £££??????CRAZY ISNT IT? just stay away!This place is dangerous

Highly Irregular !!!!! They told me I had to pay cash, I asked them if they don’t pay tax ? Then the card reader appeared and they told me that the prices on the menu were listed with a cash discount and my bill would be 10% higher. Irregular ! a bit unwelcoming, and not accommodating.

My food was good but my friend's food was poor. And cash payments only? What's that all about? Nah, dat nah work for me! And why can't you serve us water! Even after asking a second time, the water never ever appeared? Very poor, especially when there's so much competition in a close proximity!

Above average Chinese with great prices and lovely atmosphere. Service is quick and they offer take away.

The food there is fine, the price is okay, and the portion is generous. I gave it two stars due to its unprofessional service and potential ignorance of food allergies. We had been required to change tables two times. The second time, the food was served, and we had already started eating. Even though we had to move all the food, plates, glasses and chopsticks by ourselves, they asked us to change the table just to seat the new customers. I also ordered takeaway food for my partner, who was vegan and allergic to animal fat. I emphasized no meat in the dish and explained why when I placed the order. However, I still found pork in the dish. I requested them to cook me another one and told the staff again the one with pork contained animal fat and my partner could not eat it. They promised me they would cook a fresh dish and not use the food from the old dish (by taking the pork out). Despite the staff confirming firmly that the dish was fresh with new ingredients, my partner got running tummy overnight. The following day, my partner still has strong stomach pain at the moment when I am writing the comments. The dish I took from the restaurant was the only dinner he had, apart from the home-cooked rice. Of course, there may be other reasons for my partners' bad tummy, which I personally think the probability was low based on the above-mentioned experience. If you care about the experience of the services, I have to say Red Star will not be an ideal choice. But the food there is fine, not the best but not the worst for sure. If you have food allergies, you may need watch out.

Nice environment great service, taste is OK, not great, salty an greasy

Went in for dinner the my partner the food was absolutely amazing az always but the customer service skills of the staff need addressing they kept staring like we was going to do a runner my partner put her chopsticks down for 2 seconds to tend to our child and they took her food away. They gave us the bill after 2 mouthfuls of our dinner. Top much like a production like want you in and out. Shame food is class but staff have ruined the place and certainly won't be returning anytime soon.

Glad I chose this for today’s lunch. I ordered a combo and it’s really large, barely finish it but still. Look at my empty containers lol Bento is amazing as well with lots of sides It’s lovely to have food pics in the restaurant so that ppl who is not familiar with Asian food can choose what they want from the photo. Just to rmb to bring the cash for payment otherwise need to go Tesco to withdraw the money.

Rude staff, Chinese parties that had come considerably later than us had been served their food before we had even had our order taken. Left and hadn’t been served. Avoid.

Waited to be seated but gave the seat to the group behind us without saying anything. We got seated and gave us the food menu. Me and my friends waited for 20 minutes and tried so hard to get there attention Very disappointed! They were busy on take away order and ignore us! They shouldn't just keep on taking take away order and ignoring eat in customer! They didn’t even manage to get our order after 25 minutes from being sat down! but didn't tell us that we have to wait longer than usual! What kind of staff is that? At the same time we have a couple who sat beside our table that arrived after us! They got served and food came After 10mins from they arrived and seated! What a joke!!! Staff were rude! Service? Cant even rate is as there isn’t any service at all! I've been to lots of Chinese restaurant and this is the worst experience ever! I will never go back and higly "dis" recommend other to visit Red Star Noodlebar in Oxford!!!

Please read Not sure why this place have so many 5 stars but it's definitely not. Food are too salty and bland/ no flavour, also over-cooked. Example the prawn dishes are chewy as it's cooked for too long Wait a long time for food to come. Don't think will come back again, wouldn't recommend

Omg, this place, looks pretty on the inside so we thought we'd try something a little different. We went in asked for a table for two, the waitress told us to sit there, right by the drafty door where deliveroo drivers were in and out. No thanks, we'll have a table at the back of the restaurant, the waitress then proceeded to take our order with interruptions from a deliveroo driver, we were not offered drinks, not even a jug of cold water, when we asked for a jug of water 2 glasses appeared with the waitress grunting two tap water, the service is shocking. We ordered our starters which came out one by one, the main course arrived neyoigi rice which tasted disgusting, something was definatly off in the dish as it tasted sour, we ordered special fried rice which was edible the sweet n sour ribs where not brilliant, you had to eat them quick before they got cold n hard, No this RED STAR CHINEESE RESTAURANT on Cowley looks lovely all the dishes lit up in lights on the wall but the food is DIGUSTING, there is something to be had for a good chineese but this was terrible, the customer service is non exhistant and the food looks appetising but is truely awful, this place won't be seeing me again.

Their chicken teriyaki HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO with the chicken teriyaki. Also, everything was SALTY. Portions are truly generous, but that unfortunately means more salty, mediocre food. Won't be comming back.

Good portions and good prices but I am very disappointed with my experience , anything we ordered was extremely salty, we ordered 3 dishes , both very salty , one of them was grilled chicken in chilly sauce, we received fried chicken and not grilled , it was so salty that we couldn't eat it so we asked for it to be changed, the answer from the kitchen was that they cook the food like that and next time we would need to ask for little salt at the order.

We were visiting Oxford, and chose this restaurant misled by good reviews. We had a group of 6, so rang them first to check whether need to prebook if we are just 15 min away. They said they are ok to have us. The menu came, literally just in 30 sec, the guy came to take order. We asked just for 1-2 min to decide. He was unbelievably rude as if we intruded there! He said they are rushing as the kitchen is closing in a min, which we completely understand! However, why don't u just clarify that to the customers if they r ringing before coming in!!! We were so hungry, so kind of just digested that attitude and ordered something. However, the 'golden wings' were pathetic and rest of the food item were average. I am sure there are far better restaurants in Cowley roads!!!

Best chinese ever had. Great ramens. Amazing chili and garlic prawns. The beef brisket is also great. Delivery portions are smaller, so it's best to eat at the place tbh. And it's cash only.
