A Taste of China in Oxford

Great to takeaway but not much of a place to sit, I ordered a very comforting chicken noodle soup and it definitely helped cure my freshers flu. Not too salty. Great ratio of chicken to noodles to accompaniments, no complaints from me!

We got the medium spicy triple biang biang noodles. It wasn't very spicy. The noddles were very good and were hand made right when we ordered them!

The food is fantastic, super authentic (from 陕西 Shaanxi province in China and nearby regions) and quite different to what most Chinese takeaways serve in the UK. I've ordered about half the dishes on the menu and most have really impressed me. Good value for money too. The wait time can be too long though, which puts me off a bit. Staff are really friendly (at least to me when I speak Chinese to them). There's a few seats to sit but not much space, I've never sat in.

Love their Rice Noodle Soup! Very rich toppings and great flavours. Staff is also very nice. 10/10!

Beef meat cuts looked cheap and fatty in my house special dish. Wouldn’t recommend.

Somewhat tasty, but the portion was laughably small and the amount of meat was an insult. Lacked value and authenticity.

I was so happy to find hot dry noodles at this place. I had those and my partner biangbiang noodles. Both were amazing. Will definitely be returning!

Spare Ribs Noodles in Soup was very delicious! I want to come here again!

We paid £25.50 in total for two dishes. We were charged an extra £4.50 each (£9 total) to add meat to both dishes which seemed expensive, but we thought it might be a generous portion, how wrong we were because it was literally 6 small cubes of meat when it came. Also the biangbiang noodles were lacking in flavour and over cooked. Very disappointing and felt like we were ripped off

Transportation. As my companion led me through the ancient bazaar of the Covered Market, it was the smell that first transported me. Delicious aromas and scents that whisk the senses. Greeted by three friendly faces, I was again transported. Asked for chilli in the Biangbiang noodles - of course we'd like chilli. Yes also on the dumplings, but not meat. Thank you. After conquering a table away from other bystanders, the sight of the dishes finally transported me. Delectable, scrumptious and divine are the only words to describe. Happy New Year.

Best noodles at oxford - I like the BiangBiang, the liangpi can be hit or miss (usually hit though). The soy milk didn't taste very different from what I could get in a carton last time I went though. There's not much seating, which is a shame, since this isn't the type of food you want to let sit too long.

Delicious hot and sour braised beef noodles.

The best noodle bar in Oxford. The dry hot noodles is only £6 - good portion and magically amazing! The only down side is there’s limited table. It’s better off to get it as a takeaway. To skip the queue, you can call in and place the order in advance.

hot and dry noodles are incredible

Had the sesame noodles which was a big portion but given there were no other ingredients, £8.50 was a bit too much. Same goes for chicken rice noodles. Portion not as high and cost £11.50. Better valued food can be had elsewhere.

Very tasty and cheap food. You can order by phone in advance to pick your order up, which is very convenient.

Feel unwell after eating foods over there. No places to sit down. The cooking process is quite disgusting. Never never try it again. It is worse and worse😟.

The chongqing noodles were REALLY really good…would highly recommend to anyone and everyone in Oxford! The scallion pancake wasn’t as thin and flaky as I would’ve imagined, but the noodles more than made up for it. Having grown up in Hong Kong, the Sichuan food made here is just as good as anything I’d find back home.

Revisited Taste of China as were hoping for some biang biang noodles but they didn't have any!!!! So sad!!!! Ordered dumplings in hot and sour soup which is now £10 - very steep! - also lamb paomo (£10), and spicy beef with sweet potato noodles (£8.50). It took awhile for the food to arrive and everything was piping hot and delicious. My fave was the beef dish and the chewy dough bits in the lamb paomo was interesting. We didn't get a lot of meat in either of the dishes which was disappointing. Food is still lovely but price point might be prohibitive esp when it's a stall and not a restaurant.

It took some finding because it's back on the wall by Market Street, but it was well worth it. The vegetarian noodle salad was simple but perfectly balanced—not oily, not dry, and spicy as I requested. A friendly and very helpful staff person also explained how many other items on the menu can be made vegetarian as well. I know where I'm having lunch the next two days!

Delicious, honest food that appears superbly authentic. I was one of the few non-Chinese speakers to order. I watched the cooks make my noodles fresh to create my spicy stew with pork meatballs. I asked for medium spice — which was almost too much for me but still outstanding. This is an excellent place to grab a healthy lunch.

Super underrated spot, service is a little slow but still reasonable (because they make the food right in front of you) and the food is worth it!

Good traditional home tastes, I would recommend it.

Small authentic noodle shop located in a nook of the covered market. Really sweet people there, hard-working and kind. We arrived at opening at 10:30 and were #3 in line. Only three tables outside but you can take your food to the benches in the center and have your meal. Any total over 10£ you can use your card, anything under, cash.

I ordered Chinese burger and cold noodles, they are quite pricey considering of what's in it. And far from the pictures on their menu. Not worth it.

For something a bit different it's priced okay but is not flavoured as well as me and my partner had hoped. It is missing some of the flavour profile we expected in some of the stuff. However it is filling and tucked away in a quiet corner of the market allowing for more of an intimate and relaxing talk.

When I saw them making the noodles I knew it was gonna be good and it was, some of the best Chinese food I've had in the UK!

I'm usually quite hesitant eating out in chinese restaurants because of how often I come across concerns on hygiene. This place gives me confidence in the fact that I can see everything that is happening inside the kitchen, and I can always peep in if I have any concerns. I have been happy with my food so far and I also see that I'm not the only one. It can definitely be a little cheaper but you gotta do what you gotta do to stay afloat in Oxford I suppose Also the owner is extremely nice, and he even offered the juice by the counter at a discount price when I didn't have enough cash (I am not a Chinese person FYI). I hope they continue doing well and open up an even bigger restaurant in Oxford! You've clearly got a lot of fans!

Delicious authentic Chinese food. 非常好吃 😋

The covered market is probably my fave bit of Oxford and we were glad to chance upon A Taste of China. There were a few people waiting for their orders and we were lucky to get a seat. We got a couple of noodle dishes, a couple of dumpling dishes, and a scallion pancake. Loved the noodles - the hot and dry one has peanuts in it so tasted a bit different. Liked the thickness and chewiness of the biang biang noodles. Fried dumplings were not too bad, and the dumplings in hot and sour soup were very tasty. The container they were served in was a bit narrow so we had to put some of the dumplings on another container to stir the soup around as most of the veg, peanuts & flavouring were at the bottom. The scallion pancake was a bit disappointing as it was quite thick and there wasn't alot of scallion in it. Staff served the food to us as and when they were ready and it wasn't too long a wait. Prices were a bit high for a market stall but the food was really good in general. I think I would gave liked them even spicier!! Definitely recommended and would love to visit again!

Recommended: spicy pork rib noodles, hot and sour vermicelli, braised pork rice, fried dumplings. All super hearty and satisfying but the spicy soups are going to make you perspire like a waterfall. Be warned.

This is THE MOST AUTHENTIC Chinese food I ever had in Europe. Absolutely the highlight of my visit in Oxford! Want to try some delicious Northern Chinese noodles & buns? This is your place! I was dying to have some Chinese flavors after eating British food nonstop for 4 days - this restaurant really soothed my soul. I ordered sanqin huimian (signature dish) for myself and hot dry noodles for my husband. We both loved them! We also got pork bun (Chinese burger) - seriously it is so much more authentic than what I had in Hong Kong. Oxford being the least affordable city in UK, I think this place is amazing value for money given how delicious the food was! I spent >40 pounds at the other Chinese restaurant Zheng and it was definitely not worth it. Thank you for cooking delicious authentic Chinese food! Love it so much!

4.9 star rate on the Google map, good enough, but not that good as I expected. I ordered 武汉热干面/hot dry noodles for 5 pounds, It's worth it but I wouldn't come again, because it tastes like normal homemade food doesn't make me satisfy. 3.5 stars

Had the hot and sour noodles with spare ribs and lamb stew with chinese gnocchi. The noodles and soup were delicious for both but there were very little meat.

Though we were travelling in UK, this store is a must go for some authentic Chinese food. The cooking space is very clean and tidy so we were assured of the hygiene of the food.

An excellent spot for lunch- either sit down or take away. Good selection of food. Always very busy and deservedly so.

Satay noodles are amazing, so much peanut satay sauce you could almost say too much. Also had some fried dumplings and they were superb. Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu every time we come into oxford. Great value & freshly cooked, expect a wait for your fresh food.

The cook is from China. I had a lovely meal and tasted authentic China cooking. I also observed about 6 customers from China ordering food while I was eating. Overall, highly recommended. It's a cash-only restaurant. Ideal for takeaways. Seating is limited to two 2-seater tables outside the shop. Menu is clearly laid out in English.

Located at the north end of Oxford Covered Market. I ordered braised beef and braised pork with rice. They were very good. My favorite is beef noodles. It has the taste that I would have in Shanghai or other parts in China. Real authentic Chinese taste. Not only Chinese, this place might be well known among locals which can be seen from the crowd. There are two small tables for a quick meal on the spot. Take away is the most preferred option. Strongly recommended for warm tasty Chinese food in Oxford.

Guys, if you are happy to pay £6.5 for this tiny portion of food, go for it! They didn’t change the price for 3 years, but they have secretly halved their portion (for what I bought today, I think it’s even less than a half of the original portion size). Interesting and decent Chinese noodle shop. It's located near the public toilets entrance side, there's minimal seating consisting of 2 tables and 4 to 5 chairs. It's likely you'll be sharing the table with a stranger. Food is freshly made, it's no fuss authentic Chinese noodle dishes, everything is served in takeaway bowls, and trays. It's reasonably priced for what it is, it's cash only also. Biang Biang noodles were very good, the house special stew with lamb was average. The steamed pork bun was pretty good, and fresh soy milk was good. Recommended for something different and authentic.

This unassuming noodle bar is a gem, the menu offers unusual dishes, prepared in front of you. It's a pity that there are only two tables, but I keep coming back for the hot and dry noodles. Simple and incredibly tasty food.

陕西面食做的还算正宗，面片擀得比较劲道，汤头放了点中药应该是，也比较香。但是价格略贵，而且没有地方坐着，适合打包。

Not had better Chinese food than this place. People complain about service, slowness and lack of tables, but I would rather have all of that because the food is just that good. Food is all handmade by the family that run it, you see them everyday stretching noodles made from scratch for the dishes. I think they are all really lovely and never had a problem with service. The probably know there can be a wait for food which is why they encourage people to phone up to order. When something is this popular its worth planning your lunch break a little more. Although they could attach a brick to my order and throw it at me and I would still eat there. Pork burgers are utterly divine, but be warned, your hands will stick to everything after eaten one!

my friend and I came here during her lunch break hoping to grab some food before finding a nice spot outside to enjoy the lovely weather. she had been raving about how good the food was and I was very excited to eat there myself. I had high hopes for the food and I was not disappointed, the noodles are fantastic. however we had to wait over half an hour for the food, which was an issue because her lunch break is only an hour. I would definitely come here again for the food, but next time I would do my best to avoid the lunch time rush.

The chef is from mainland of China for sure, as no one else could make and keep the taste of the food as good as it should be in the west of Mainland, although a tiny bit changes have been made in ingredients is for sure as well, which I suppose is because of the availabilities of materials at locals and also to make the food more tasty. Biang Biang noodle and the pork burgers are highly recommend.

I rarely give three stars, because I only review if I adore or loathe a place, but Taste of China is an outlier. They have truly exceptional food, of a taste and quality and authenticity I haven't experienced outside China. As an incurable sucker for noodle soups of any sort, I particularly like the house stew with beef, the beef noodle soup and the biang biang (?) with extra beef. I've tried other dishes too, and they are all phenomenal. However! The service is otherworldly awful. You wait and wait and wait, other people get served before you, you need to ask three times where your food is, there is a lunch stampede that I have frankly not experienced in this form in China, and it's an overall annoying experience. And yet I keep going back because the food is just so worth fighting for, so here's why I give three stars to the place with amazing food and atrocious service.

A wonderful friendly family run business in the covered market. I feel so lucky to work next to somewhere that serves such delicious authentic home cooked Chinese food. It makes such a change from the same bland western versions that are offered in other places. I love watching them make the noodles fresh while waiting for my order. That little corner of the market makes me feel like have travelled half way across the world on my half hour lunch break! Update: When I reviewed this had only tried the dumplings and noodles. Now I feel like they deserve another 5 stars for the Pork Burgers alone, incredibly tasty.

在牛津呆了两个半天 来这吃了两顿 肉夹馍非常棒 热干面 烩面 臊子面 羊肉泡馍也都不错

尽管老板不是陕西人，但是油泼面，煎饺，凉皮都很好吃，快餐式的，店里没有座位，我们在商场过道里的桌子上吃的，餐盒是塑料盒，不过味道很正宗。能在牛津遇上地道的中国菜很不错，离景区很近，值得推荐

在牛津也踩了不少地雷，讓人很不舒服在飲食方面。但是在三秦百味，我們點了酸辣粉，煎餃都很好吃。

Visited three Times. Noodles soup with beef just top. Dry noodles with nuts yummy. But best is pork burger. 5£, small, but so tasty. Expect some waiting around lunch as is very busy that time.

So wonderful - tastes just like old favourites from Xi'an!

Stavo visitando il mercato coperto di Oxford con dei miei amici e mi sono imbattuto in questo piccolo ristorante cinese ed essendo amante dei dumpling li ho voluti provare... sono rimasto molto colpito dalla pulizia del locale e sorpreso dal fatto che preparino tutto sul momento a differenza di quello che succede in Italia. I dumpling erano ottimi, per niente unti e sapore ottimo. Peccato abbia solo 2 tavoli all'esterno ma forniscono tutto in ottime confezioni di plastica, io sono riuscito a mangiare tranquillamente in piedi. Consigliatissimo anche per i prezzi!!!

Traditional Chinese food, mainly noodles. You can tell it is authentic as most of the customers are Chinese. I had biang biang noodles, big, thick, chewy noodles with a little vegetable and sauce, spicy and delicious. You get your food in a take away plastic container, so you can take it away or eat it at the table. However, there are only 2 tables and 4 chairs, so if you want to sit down, I suggest you wait until a table is free before you order your food. Meals are about £6 to £6.50

Great food, exceeds the quality of many places boasting Shaanxi food. However, please place your order ahead of time as the waiting time can be long, especially for the stewed and hot soup dishes. Cold dishes as i observed are much faster. Take your food to a nearby park to enjoy if there s no seating outside.

Authentic Chinese food, freshly made every day, great service

So after visiting ‘A taste of China’ three times, I’ll tell you what I know. The food is delicious I’m mean really good, the staff are super nice also head of house seems like a top guy. They seem to be always busy, so expect a wait( so there it’s been said, patience is a virtue) it’s a shame they haven’t got more tables outside, but I’m guessing that might be due to the bigwigs at the covered market. Authentic Chinese food at your pleasure.

My 15 year old daughter and I visited the covered market yesterday morning and having walked around town decided to re-visit for lunch. This isn't a restaurant it's more a "hole in the wall" kind of place. A tiny kitchen with one cooker which has about 12 gas rings and a couple of kitchen tables for preparation.

So not worth the wait; food is okay. Their order system is screwed up really. Remember to ask them how long is the wait before you place order. HUGE WASTE OF TIME

Some legit Chinese cold noodles takeaway. Reasonably priced! Don't eat it in the covered market because there's not enough seating space - go to a college and chill there!
