I don’t have a bad thing to say about my meal here. I came once years ago and was underwhelmed but wow things have changed. First off, cannot tell you how rare it is to find a restaurant with a menu that is both gluten and dairy free. Moreover, it is fully fledged and very similar to the main menu - no plain chicken and boiled potato substitutions here. This even included a choice of desserts. I don’t take this for granted and it’s a selling point for sure. On top of that, the food (my party told me from the main menu too) was all delicious. I am still thinking about it and look forward to when I can return. The music and ambience was also great and not too loud. There’s room for a little decor upgrade but, overall, fantastic.

Visited with a friend and the Restaurant had a nice ambience, staff were very attentive and we enjoyed the background, however the main event of the food was extremely poor. We opted for the pre-theatre at £22.50 for a 2 course. My friend had the starter of bang bang chicken, which she thought was quite tasty followed by a rather monstrous fishcake which she couldn't finish and felt that something more delicate with a light veg would have been better. I had a very uneventful starter of chicken liver parfait which looked and tasted processed with very little flavour, followed by a main course that was quite frankly awful! I opted for the pleasantly described char-grilled lemon chicken with korma sauce, turmeric rice and tzatziki salad. What arrived on my plate was a breast of chicken hidden somewhere under a huge unsightly dollop of thick sickly korma sauce. The chicken breast, which I managed to locate after scraping off some of the mound of sauce was tough as old boots and had absolutely no flavour. I couldn't tell if it had been chargrilled because I couldn't see it, but I did wonder how fresh it was, due to the awful texture and so ate very little of it. The rice grains were hard and very unpleasant to eat and I couldn't work out where the tzatziki salad was on the plate! The waitress must have noticed that I hadn't eaten much of the main but she didn't query this, which I found odd. I'm afraid that I'll be avoiding the Red Onion, wouldn't recommend and it won't be a return visit for me!

An itison gift, two courses, brilliant value The owner/chef was chef to some of our best known pop n rock stars. Don't think Marvin Gaye was one of those stars. Had he been the world could have been 'a great big red onion'. After that my starter could only be french onion soup, fantastic. Main, blade of beef with black pudding mash, again superb. Service professional and friendly. Only one minor downside had to ask for water in my opinion this should be offered. Great value for money in one of Glasgow's finest.

We were on a tour of Scotland and this was to be a highlight dinner for the group. Everyone was seated quickly, but be aware the restaurant is very loud. Dishes were served quickly. The food was okay, people liked the goat cheese salad and the French onion soup. I had the rib eye and it was a bit fatty. After the plates were handed out, not one time did a server ask how everything was, if anyone needed anything, if anyone wanted another drink or more water. Nothing. Guess they knew they'd be getting a gratuity no matter the level of attention paid to us. Disappointing to say the least.

Had pre theatre meal tonight at Red Onion. Been before a few years ago and remembered having a nice meal back then. I has nice spiced morocco's lentil soup and my wife had french onion soup to start. We both enjoyed it, only slight criticism is the piece of bread with the soup was pitiful, suggest they invest in decent bread and offer butter. We both had seabass with Caesars salad of lettuce hearts, avocado and tater tots. Really nice but a bit heavy on the mayonnaise. The staff were lovely and I would recommend visit for the food, however the decor is very tired and in need of a refurb. The leather seats upstairs are badly split, the carpet has visible gaps in the joins and frayed.

My daughter took me for a belated birthday meal here on Sunday because I'd wanted to try it for a while. We both really enjoyed it. I thought I'd try the French onion soup even though I'd read several reviews that didn't rate it. It was perfect for a cold night. No complaints at all. The chicken and korma sauce with turmeric rice was gorgeous. I loved the wee touch of pomegranate in the side salad. I didn't order dessert, but instead opted for a liquor coffee. That was the only disappointing part of the meal. I couldn't really taste either the coffee or the liqueur, but all in all it was a lovely meal and the service from our waitress Susannah was outstanding.

Was looking forward to visiting here but OMG was left wishing we hadn’t … first of all the place needs a lick of paint ( See picture attached ) of where we were sitting. The food wasn’t great , in fact i would go as far as saying the worst french onion soup i’ve ever had in my life , very bland , watery and tasted like a beef stock cube ! The meat , i had pork , partner had steak, was battered out so thinly to make it look bigger … my pudding was an absolute disgrace! My partner had the most miserable portion of cheese we’ve ever seen. To round it all off we were overcharged on our bill … needless to say we won’t recommend or return !

Sadly this restaurant has gone downhill quite a bit. My husband took me there for my birthday yesterday, 12TH Nov, the atmosphere was zero, the waitress was disinterested, the food was not at the same level as our previous visits, we got ready to leave and no one approached us to ask how our visit went or if we enjoyed our food. We visited for lunch on Thursday. Lovely cosy surroundings, however we were seated next to the door and were absolutely frozen. Good menu, my vegan friend really rated their vegan menu. It was several pound more for each item on it though than it was on their website that day (£10 for the risotto online and £13 in the restaurant). Not very good practice to be doing this though. Overall the food was good with decent portions. The service was good and the surroundings were nice.

We travelled through from Edinburgh to stay with family for a couple of nights and we had booked this restaurant for an early meal before a theatre show. The four of us opted for the two course dinner menu. Three of the four opted for the soup of the day and I had the French onion soup. (Had recently been in Paris and didn’t get a chance to sample the soup there). It was delicious, full of flavour with cheesy bread on top. The other soup of the day (vegetable) was said to be delicious too. For mains, two of us had the steak frites which was a rib eye steak (on the small side but enough for me), plenty of frites, some greens and a pepper sauce. Again absolutely delicious. The other two mains were chicken with korma sauce, also said to be delicious. Service was very good and the young female servers were lovely. A small niggle - we noticed the chef/owner came around and spoke to guests at their tables and although we saw him come round twice and passed our table twice, for some reason he walked past us twice. We were really keen to tell him how lovely the food was but we didn’t get a chance. Not a train smash but we wondered why we had been ignored. Probably just an oversight but it got us talking. Otherwise ten out of ten for this cosy restaurant.

We asked the lady at the hotel reception at Malmaison where to find a decnt dinner for a complicated group of people: 1 is Vegetarian, 1 doesn't like fish, the other 2 want to eat local Scottish food. The Red Onion was her recommendation, and it was spot on - Modern British kitchen (I hope not to insult anybody, as I'm not 100% sure that that's the right term) with vegetarian and non-fish options, as well as some Scottish dishes and loads of other choices. I had the goat cheese salad as a starter and the fish pie as a main dish, and a cheddar plate for desert. All excellent choices. Service was great and the strong Scottish accent of the ladies who took care of us made the experience just the more authentic and charming. For anyone going to Glasgow, I'd really recommend a visit for lunch or dinner.
