Red Lion Penyffordd in Flintshire

I was looking to try somewhere new for lunch and saw this place had good reviews so thought we would try; very glad we did! The menu is good and varied with some really different options but also the usual classic types. Service was good and quick with food coming out in good time but hot and fresh. The food was fantastic and really top quality; the brie wedges were divine and I haven’t enjoyed a meal as much as I did the chicken supreme in some time! We also thought that it was really excellent value for money, so much so I won’t be eating for the rest of the day! Excellent service too. I don’t often leave restaurant reviews but this was deserved. Will definitely be return visitors.

We booked the restaurant for my Mother-in-Law's Wake for 80 people. Phoebe and her team made sure the sad occasion went smoothly, the buffet was perfect and with such a large amout of people attending we thank them for outstanding service compassion the afternoon.

The food Fantastic little place, deep fried brie wedges to start where top quality, fresh hot and with a fresh salad side, opted for the smoked haddock with cheese sauce on a bed of crushed chive potatoes, now this is possibly the best smoked haddock dish I have ever had and is definitely recommended, service was very good and well paced. So if you are looking for a new place to try definitely book a table here Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Atmosphere: 5/5

A fabulous Sunday Roast as always, both the food and service at the Red Lion never disappoints and we always know we will receive a great meal from friendly and efficient staff. Thank you!

Absolutely fabulous offer at the red lion tonight , 2 lamb curries 1/2 and half with a naan bread with a drink. We both really enjoyed our lamb curries. Served quickly and attentively by Mia. Tasty and delicious give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

9 family and friends went here to celebrate an 80th birthday, and we were all very disappointed. The restaurant was packed, too warm and extremely noisy, you couldn't hear yourself speaking. The food choice was OK but nothing special. Service by the 2 young waitresses was abysmal. They were both so grumpy, disinterested, and unhelpful. Sat waiting for ages whilst they chatted behind the counter. Some of the menus were 'Specials of the day', but these 2 didn't have a clue what these actually were!! Worst part was the long table of 22 cackling women getting drunk. Never again.

8 friends and I went for lunch at The Red Lion today the 15th March 2024 . We had wonderful food, fish and chips for most which was excelent and I had a minestrone soup followed by chilli and rice which was also delicious. The service was excellent and very friendly and the chef there is amazing...always good food and piping hot. Fantastic

A wonderful evening last night at The Red Lion Pen-y-ffordd restaurant. Phoebe and her team provided excellent service, a special mention for Abby, our waitress, she was attentive, smiling and ensured all our requirements were met in a professional manner. The food was marvellous we opted to choose from the Table D' Hote menu. I enjoyed my squid ring starter and my friends savoured their BBQ chicken wing starters. Compliments must be given to the chef and his kitchen staff, my Baked Smoked Haddock came on a bed of mushy pea mashed potato with a white wine & cheddar cream sauce - it was exceptional, I would highly recommend it! My wife and my friend chose the Red Lion Steak Burger from the main menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done all at Red Lion restaurant, we had a super evening & would highly recommend to anyone seeking great food and exemplary service.

This place has been an absolute god send, Phoebe and staff are amazing. We been without a kitchen for 5 mths and every visit we have been served with a home cooked meal and warm welcome. Really have been put silver lining during a stressful time Thank you

Came for tea with my husband and daughter and ordered the cottage pie. I was so hungry I ordered a bread roll to go with it. There was definitely no need. The best cottage pie I’ve ever tasted and I feel like I will be in a food coma for 3 weeks 🤣 staff couldn’t be any more help and will definitely return.

I booked a table for 9 people today for Sunday Lunch. This was our first time at this Restaurant and Everyone enjoyed their meals. We went for the Sunday Roast and were not disappointed at all. Great food at a good price and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We will certainly visit again.

Went on Friday 29/12 with visiting family. Phoebe (site manager) was incredibly friendly and helpful considering someone had had a medical episode in the restaurant. She was so helpful and really lovely, even helping my son choose his meal (he insisted on her input poor lady!!). The food was outstanding, the 4 of us had fantastic food (had 3 courses each so we feel we can say this). No disappointment at all. The portions are massive and it was pure greed on our part to have 3 courses but when it’s that good you gotta try! Phoebe and Harriet worked really hard that night and were an absolute credit to not only themselves but the pub too. Excellent staff and food. We then had karaoke in the bar with my son even doing a duet, the atmosphere was fantastic. Glad we just moved here as we’ve found a great place with food and service both being excellent.

Attended the Christmas party night on 6/22/23 and what a fantastic night we had. On arrival we were welcomed with a complimentary glass of Prosecco. We had a three course meal and the food was absolutely delicious, far exceeded any Christmas party meals we previously had in more larger hotel venues. Compliments to the chef!! The service was exceptional and accommodated any special requests. We had an entertainer during the meal and a disco throughout the night Each guest was given a sealed envelop to open on their return visit which could include between 10-100% of your food bill in January. Which was a nice gesture and incentive to return in January. The atmosphere and ambience or the room was lovely and completed a fantastic Christmas party night. Highly recommend this venue and will definitely be returning. 👍👏

Please be aware, As a group we booked in advance for nine people and pre ordered from the Christmas Menu 3 courses for £24.95 . Several people ordered two courses …. Remember we pre ordered…… When we came to pay we all had to pay £24.95 however many courses we had. This was not made clear in any communication. I have not come across this situation before. We felt seriously taken advantage of, no Manager available to deal with our issues .. just pay up. Our food was good and pleasant surroundings but I personally will not be going to eat there again, and my friends feel the same.

Rare steak luke warm at best. house wine £17.70 a bottle £7.22 on Amazon, no steak knives offered, staff totally uninterested .Total rip off I'm afraid.

Very disappointed with the online website, mentioned specials Mon - Fri , when arrived was told no specials! Had to show the young waitress the website to be told there is a new one which she showed us on her phone, different to the one advertised! But obviously wouldn’t have given us unless I mentioned it. False advertising. Also waited 45 mins for food. Restaurant wasn’t really busy so no apologises for late arrival of food. Advertised Karaoke for same evening to be told no karaoke that was last week!! Website needs some serious update. Food was ok just waited a little too long. Waitresses where polite but lacking knowledge. Won’t be returning sad to say!

Came here last minute for some food to celebrate our anniversary. Friendly attentive staff, we wasn't waiting very long at all. Nice seating area away from the busy noisy pub. Food was lovely no complaints. Absolutely huge portions too. I had the lasagne garlic bread and salad. The salad was fresh and not limp and old it was all faultless. Husband had the burger and chips with salad. Also faultless the chips were real chippy chips and were the best we have had for a while. We would have tried dessert but was just too full. Despite a previous poor experience of Sunday Lunch here, we decided to give it another go. This time for a midweek dinner. Their website has - WEEKDAY SPECIALS ~ Treat Yourself to a special dinner for just £9.95! Available Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 5-9 pm. Except it’s not. We booked for 6pm on a Wednesday, ordered drinks, then asked for the weekday specials only to be told they’re not available. No apology, no explanation. We had no choice but to order from the main menu, which was significantly more expensive. The food was fine but why pull in customers through your website if you don’t provide the offer. So second time here was another disappointment

Oh my days,went for steak night..absolutely amazing...steak done to perfection, sauces everything amazing. Haven't had a meal anywhere as perfect in ages. I have eaten at the Red Lion many times and the last visit in July for a lunchtime meal was as delicious as always. A varied menu and wonderful food in plentiful portion. Going agin this Friday and can't wait...it will be superb as always. I love the chilli covered cheesy chips but will try something else for a change as my friend recommends the ciabatta rolls with sausages.

Took the family for Father’s Day, the Steak & Ale pie was great! Good service too, recommend for a good quality meal at a reasonable price.

We went to The Red to celebrate my Aunties Birthday. It was a great day and the food and service were both spot on. The Salt and Pepper Chicken dish was gorgeous! Steve Crewe is a great chef, its so good to have him back in our local area! Thank you to all at The Red.

Just moved to the area and we are very lucky to have this pub as our local. The staff are so friendly, welcoming and can’t do enough for you, there is a good choice of menu and the food is delicious. Highly recommended.

Stopped off for a drink while walking the dogs 2 glasses of wine later we decided to stay for food had smelt amazing . I had fish chips and mushy peas my partner had tri of sausage . Will definitely be calling again on our Friday night dog walk . X

We absolutely love everything about Sunday lunch at the Red Lion in Penyffordd. We try to go twice a month. Every time we have a beautiful meal. It is consistently delicious every week. The meal is super fresh, all home made and generous portions. It is piping hot and nothing is too much trouble for the lovely and hard working staff. Phoebe and the team are wonderful.

Had 5 Sunday roast meals over the last 5 Sundays and will not be ordering again, first 3 weeks were great, lovely roast dinner, nice meat and fresh veg, great portion size. Last week the portion size was not so great so put it as a one off... This week... Well it was a waste of money I'm sad to say... The quality has deteriorated! Sliced beef like out of a packet, all veg was frozen and barely an of it! 1 shrivelled piece of small broccoli, spoonful of peas and sweetcorn frozen mix, frozen carrots which were awful and I personally had 6 batons, 3 frozen sprouts. 2 tiny boiled potatoes. The 2 roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were the best bit!! They have lost my custom I'm afraid as that really isn't up to standard when you're paying almost £18 for 2 roast dinners. Thanks for the last few weeks.

The Red Lion are providing a great delivery service to local residents during lockdown. Generous portions and excellent quality at a good price. I’ve ordered two lots of meals for my elderly parents and they can’t praise the food highly enough. My Mum has an allergy and they’ve helped with menu choice to accommodate this. Will certainly be ordering again and visiting once they are able to open again.

Six of us ate here boxing day and couldnt fault a thing. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff even getting us more gravy and veg without even charging for it. All of our three courses were excellent and will be returning soon. Thanks to all at the Red Lion for a great visit.

This was a great evening. Big airy room, attentive staff and excellent food. As a family we enjoyed various main meals and starters followed by a couple of desserts, one of which was the delicious Berry Trifle . Looking forward to another visit.

We have been coming to the red lion for the last 3 years and have always found it first class for everything. However last week we thought the service and food had slipped slightly. We did comment to one of the regular staff who was very apologetic and spoke with Simon the land lord who came straight over to apologise and explain the head chef was off, and gave us 10% off our bill which I thought was extremely kind. We have returned this week and it is very apparent the issues have been addressed. The service was prompt with efficient and attentive staff and when Simon (land lord) spotted us he gave us our order on the house!! Wow!! We were always going to return to the red lion but we will even more so now, massive thanks to you and your amazing team.

Called here for lunch after checking with their website that they served food. When we arrived we asked if they were serving food and were told yes. What we were not told was that, despite their website saying they serve the main menu all day, they don't. They were just serving light bites. I decided on the special hot roast pork ciabatta from the board on the bar but was told they didn't actually have that or the beef one. Why have the boards on the bar if you are not serving them !!!We shared a bowel of their "Notorious Nachos" not sure why they have that title - it was a bowl of cheap supermarket nachos with cheese and chilli on top. They didn't even bother to layer the cheese & nachos so once you had eaten the top ones the rest was just plain, bland nachos.My husband chose the fish and chips and said the fish was nicely cooked and the batter crispy but it was half a piece of fish - so small. I chose a chicken wrap and was amazed that the chef let it leave the kitchen the wrap was so stale it was hard. The best part of the meal was the chips which were proper homemade chunky chips.

Called here for a late lunch and made to feel very welcome by the landlady. The food was excellent , best quality ingredients and piping hot, and all at a very reasonable price . Great pint -- will definitely dine here again .

It was my son’s 11th birthday during the week and we asked him where he wanted to go for his birthday meal..... his response the red lion. The red is our local and what a local it is too from a lite bite to a full 3 course meal you can’t go wrong. The Sunday lunch is the best for miles around our favourite is the triple roast . The gravy is quite simply the best. I can also highly recommend the steaks they are cooked to perfection. The staff are superb and will always go the extra mile to ensure your visit is enjoyable and you are well looked after. Well done Steve, Paula & team

We usually go once a week for something to eat. Food is always excellent and not too long too wait. Sherry trifle is absolutely gorgeous. Steve and the staff are always friendly and helpful.

We had Christmas dinner at the red this year and can't praise it high enough.Every course of the meal was fantastic. It was all freshly cooked on the premises by the Chef's Steve and Gary and piping hot. The service was excellent. My 88 year old father in law and 83 year old mother in law, who are traditionalist took some persuading to go, really enjoyed their meals and I didn't have any washing up to do, result!!!

Visited with friends and children during the Christmas period. Portion sizes are huge for the price of food. Kids portions big and all food freshly cooked, they all cleared their plates. The chicken linguine was delicious, freshly cooked and tasty. Will return 😁

A group of us went to the Red Lion for Christmas Eve, the food was amazing as always and we was very well looked after by the staff. We can not fault the quality of both food and service and thoroughly recommend this place to anyone.

Visited 22nd December with a group of friends and we all had a great time. Food and service were excellent. Prosecco was served chilled with a bucket. Sunday special menu with 2 and 3 course offers was on, which was good value, especially 3 courses! Only an extra £1 to have dessert and with the option to take it home, who can resist? Variety of food on the Sunday menu, not just roast dinners, which was perfect for me! Thank you to all the staff at the Red Lion for a fantastic evening.

I enjoyed both a party night mid with friends mid December and a meal with friends and family on Christmas Eve. Both times the restaurant was very busy, food was excellent, piping hot and the service excellent too!

Steve and his staff are absolute stars. Fantastic food. If I could rate the red lion any higher, I most definitely would. Don't hesitate to visit if you get the chance seriously.

We dined on Sunday 22nd December. The staff were excellent and the lady who served us could not have been more helpful. The food was fantastic, as always. Between the party we had the roast lamb dinner, roast beef, beef chilli, hunters chicken and the Christmas turkey dinner. Every single meal was beautiful. The roast dinners came with a side dish of vegetables - fantastic sprouts! I’ll definitely be having a Sunday roast at the Red more often!

We live fifteen miles away introduced to the Red Lion by friends.We are now regular visitors can not fault the Sunday lunch.Staff very friendly and you are not rushed.

I often visit The Red Lion and decided to host my 60th Birthday there, nothing was too much trouble, I hired the whole restaurant even though it's their busiest time of year. The food was fantastic and my guests also said how outstanding the buffet was. The team ensured everything was perfect, thanks to Steve and Phoebe who arranged everything including the Disco.

Difficult to review..... The food was ok but the restaurant has no atmosphere. I think it's due to its shape...its very square and regimented and felt me feel quite uncomfortable.

Booked for a birthday dinner as a party of 25 and have to say had an excellent evening.The initial arrangements were well managed by the staff and the night of the meal ran like clockwork even with the large group a few hiccups would have been expected but there were none the waiting staff were very efficient and friendly and everyone commented on the quality of the meals all in all a very good experience a big thank you to all at the red lion.

Visited for the 1st time today 13th October with the family who live in the area, WoW! So impressed lovely atmosphere,staff really nice. The food was excellent, every one of our meals was superb, 3 of us had starters all 1st class I had garlic mushrooms myself I can honestly say the best I've ever tasted. My husband had the haddock as a main which was 1st class , my son the ham roast dinner and myself and daughter in kaw the lamb all cooked to perfection, children enjoyed their meals and the only ones to be able to squeeze a dessert of fudge cake which was soon devoured. I must say the best pub meal we've all been able to say was faultless for a long time, will certainly be visiting again when we come on a visit. May I also thank Phoebe and Simon who we enjoyed a lot of banter with. To try the Red Lion is a must if you enjoy good food at a reasonable price in a nice relaxing atmosphere.

The Red Lion is always our first choice for a Sunday lunch. The menu is varied and the portions are very generous. On our last visit we enjoyed the roast beef and the roast lamb, both of which were delicious. The staff were very attentive and friendly.

Went with my husband and 4 other family members. Food and service was great as usual. Only small hiccup was one of the starters were forgotten, however, this was rectified quickly.

We visited as a group of 3 on a reasonably quiet Friday evening (approx 20 other customers in the restaurant area). When the food arrived it was lovely, just a shame that we had to wait so long for it. The restaurant could easily seat about 2 or 3 times the amount of customers that were there so I'd hate to know how long the wait would be if they were full.

Just had a gorgeous meal at red lion , lovely veg soup followed by turkey roast and sticky toffee pud and a sherry trifle for hubby we both enjoyed everything and girls who wait on are lovely and helpful too. Worth every penny!!! Can’t fault it in anyway.thanks.

Myself and Wyn my partner took his 84 year old mum for lunch to the RedLion in Penyfforrd. I had the roast lamb dinner. Wyn and his mum(who hasn’t got huge appetite) had 9oz bacon chop, egg, mushroom, tomato and chips. The food was absolutely gorgeous. Very tasty. Staff very polite and attentive. Is the 3rd time I’ve been here. Shame it’s not closer to home. But well worth the drive. 5 stars all round.

Visited this pub today. Must admit pleasantly surprised. Restaurant clean. Staff well presented and polite. The food was even better. 4 in party. Two had beef roast one special roast and i had lamb roast. All wonderful comments on quality and quantity of food. And the deserts were great too. One ice cream one sticky toffee pud with custard one chocolate orange cake with ice cream and one trifle. Trifle was lovely but wanting bigger portion. If only because it was very nice and wanting more.
