We were disappointed with our trip to this pub it all nice and shiny but please remember that locals and visitor are beening forgotten. When we use to go this pub about 5 years ago it was very good value for money then. We found it what we consider a bit pricey. I also noticed the the food was not as good as it once was. We were going to go elsewhere but we noticed it was the same landlord as about five years ago. So we stayed but all local characters gone. I could say a bit more but I won't. I hope next time I visit oswestry l don't see more closed pubs

Very disappointing, very bland, the only good thing was the meat, no mash, same gravy for all meat, luckily we had ordered the small option, not for us I am afraid...when you get the best on your doorstep, will always be critical 😀

Bad very bad that’s how I would describe the good we had Microwaved gammon and chips like bullets the presentation was even worse it’s a shame really because it’s in a prime position and the staff are very polite that’s why I didn’t complain just played about with the food and left .With a proper chef this place could be a goldmine

Lovely food, lovely staff! We were accommodated last minute having had the father in law suggest we go out for a meal and recommending this. The lady behind the bar was welcoming and very efficient and our group of 11 had drinks and orders placed very quickly. They have a good menu and lots of specials above the bar too, very reasonable prices and big portions. The food came out amazingly fast and served altogether, piping hot. Everyone was pleased with their food and my sausage, chips and onion gravy was so yummy - proper homemade cooked chips not the pre cut oven chips and premium butchers sausages. In laws had steak and said it was the best they have had. Will deffo go back, was so pleased with food, service, drinks and value

Every single time my family and I have visited for food, we leave talking about how amazing the food is. We have been this evening and once again, the food was incredible. If I could put into words what their home made chips taste like I would, but I don’t think anything I say could give them the credit they deserve! Steak is delicious, veggie option available, specials on the board and very polite young girl behind the bar. The food here is not talked about enough, 100% a hidden gem!

Went to the red lion for lunch with a service user, good drinks service. Rude staff member who said “That will keep you quiet” after giving us the food. Heard the microwave and our food came out. It was warmed up as it looked very lifeless and unappetising. Will not be visiting again.

Friendly staff and quick service from the drinks bar. However, after looking at the outside menu persuaded myself to pay a visit. After ordering my bacon, chicken sandwiche, chips and salad. And hearing the microwave pinging in the background and food on the table, I was not happy with the look of the food. The salad looked lifeless, chicken and bacon sandwiche and chips weren't all that cracked up too be. It didnt seem freshly prepared. Overall disappointment and nothing to ride home about.

The last time I was in this pub was during the 1970's. We went into the 'back room' where a glass fronted fire was burning. It made the atmosphere very cosy as it was a cold and wet night of our visit. We were quite hungry and opted for starters and main meals. We had two prawn cocktails and a portion of garlic mushrooms. This was served by a pleasant lady who listened to my tales of days gone by in the place with interest. The starters arrived shortly after being ordered and where good in quality and quantity served in a glass, the way a good prawn cocktail should be served! the garlic mushrooms were plentiful and not overdone in garlic. For mains we opted for the beef lasagne with chips (hand cut) not frozen. Good old fashioned sausage and mash and steak pie and mash. Again, these dishes arrived timely and the plates were brimming. The food was absolutely scrumptious warm and really too much. We had soft drinks and cider to accompany the meal. I was pleasantly surprised to find the bill amounted to only £39.00. Exceptional value, in comfortable surroundings. We were the only three people in the bar at the time -6pm. The people of Oswestry dont know what they are missing if they opt for eating out of an evening. I certainly will be back- my (re) visit brought back a lot of memories of bygone days when at that time on a Friday night the bars were wall to wall with punters. It may have been very quiet in the pub but it certainly was a good night out for us.

Stopped in Oswestry on the way home from holiday. We walked through the town and ended up here randomly. The service was excellent - cannot fault it. The food however was a disappointment. Our party had fish and chips, gammon, steak pie and the chicken curry. The fish was terrible - frozen pre-battered, the gammon was chewy and the pie tasteless. My daughter said the curry was OK but not great. As a gauge to others it was a definite step down from a Wetherspoons meal who sell a better equivalent of every dish we had. Reading the other reviews there are plenty of people who like it here - perhaps it's a case of picking the right food options. Personally I wouldn't return or recommend.

6 adults and a child went for a meal. As always the owners Frank and Ang did us proud. The food was fabulous. Cooked fresh to order and piping hot. The chicken curry is home made and is to be recommended! 3 people had scampi, which was excellent, 1 had steak, cooked to perfection and 1 had the tower burger which was enormous. The homemade chips make it! For the price and quality I doubt you would find better. Highly recommended.

Visited Oswestry with a group of friends for the weekend and on the day of arrival we were all starving! We parked up at the Market Square (2 minute walk away from the pub) and chanced our arm at the Red Lion Inn as the menu looked very good. Upon entering we were seated by a very friendly woman and informed we had to order our food at the bar. I went for the Steak and Ale pie and can honestly say it was the best pie I've ever had! It was absolutely superb and complimented very well by the home made chips and gravy it came with. I would highly recommend! Only downside would be the lack of outdoor seating (only one bench outside), however this doesn't detract away from the great food and service we received.

Because we had previously been in a couple of smaller, cosy, very traditional pubs, my first impression of the Red Lion was that it’s a bit of a barn - but that’s perhaps being a tad unkind. In decor and style it is certainly what you might call functional, but it’s actually a perfectly nice pub with good service; and by taking a seat near the nice fire we got the slightly cosier atmosphere I’d thought was missing.

I was looking for somewhere to stay over that wasn't too expensive and had decent food. For the prices I paid I was very pleasantly surprised. When I arrived at about 8pm the pub was buzzing, full of people almost all eating. Took me a while to check in cos the staff were so busy but when I got to my room which was en suite I found it very good considering I had only paid £40 for b&b which included a full english breakfast. The room was a bit dated and worn but was fine. For the meal in the bar I chose a lamb chop with egg, salad, chips etc and found it very tasty for a great price. This was washed down with a few hand pulled beers. The only drawback was the size of the car park which was small and not easy to negotiate. Still taking everything into account if you want a lively pub enviroment to stsy in with good food I would recommend.

Possibly one of the worst places I've eaten in a long long time. The place is old, dim and in need of decoration and renovation. The food was Sunday lunch, tough pork, watery roast potatoes, grey coloured red cabbage, Yorkshire pudding by Aunt Bessie. The sprouts hadn't been prepared properly there were thick leaves and stalk.I would hope Oswestry has somewhere better to eat, but looking at reviews if this place is considered good, I dread to think what the other places are like.

If the rating went up to ten I might have knocked off a point for only being open at meal times and not during the afternoon, but given that this is Oswestry (which almost entirely grinds to a halt in the afternoons), I can't fault it on that front.Food is basic pub fayre at a glance but the taste is exceptional. I've been all over the country and the egg mayo sandwiches are the best I have ever had! Litrally the best vegan food in Oswestry and way surpasses anything else available in a vegan cafe in Oswestry. The food was beautifully presented, the flavours were amazing and the cocktails were beautiful too. Really hope the owner decides to run these evenings on a regular basis although once word gets around i imagine getting a table will be really difficult. Its great to see a vibrant young business do so well and honestly the co trading with Liar liar is such a brilliant idea. Two amazing businesses running side by side.
