Worth the walk if your in Penzance. A real pub with real locals that interact with outsiders, had the Sunday roast was a firm 10/10 and the view over the harbour is awesome

Great local pub. Proper! Staff supurb, food excellent value and cracking atmosphere. Landlady has worked hard to get this pub the way it is.... and it shows. Well done. Special shout out to Jonny on Saturday.... band cancelled but did his best to make the evening. Bang on guys! 4th time.... and we will make it 5

A lively local friendly pub in Newlyn (3rd time here) great food ,calamari starter crab soup main, we were warned of a possible wait for food but excellent food with minimal delay.Great barstaff and waitress services couldn't do more for customers.

We visited Newlyn the years ago and were advised to try the famous crab soup at the Red Lion, we did our best, but as is sometimes the case, date intervenes, in this case, COVID. We have returned the years later and have eventually managed to have the crab soup....... All I can say, is it was worth the wait!! Aside from the soup, the pub is beautifully located, the locals are friendly and the staff are more than welcoming. The menu obviously has more than just the crab soup, all of which is more than worthy of trying, needless to say, we will return again and again.

Fantastic seafood. Had whitebait, crab soup, fish of the day and chips. All delicious. Proper pub, overlooking the harbour. Food was great value. They offer two sizes of meal for most mains, a large (about the size and price of an average restaurant meal), and a small version for a very reasonable price. Means you can try more different dishes if you don’t have a huge appetite! Only regret is that we didn’t go there till the last night of our stay in Newlyn!

I rang to ask if it was necessary to book a table for Sunday lunch. I was told it was advisable. We turned up on time on Sunday to an almost empty pub. Our booking seemed to be unknown to the staff. We ordered the much lauded Newlyn crab soup which to be honest was bland and tasted more tomato/pumpkin than crab. £26 was a total rip off too. Lovely view of the harbour and the drinks were fine but I’d give the crab soup a miss.

The pub is being renovated on the outside, but inside it is a faded glory with bar stools missing the upholstery. Service is excellent, that's certainly not the problem, but there are nicer places nearby

This is clearly a neighbourhood pub for locals. Everyone seems to know each other. We ate here twice because it was down the road from our accommodations. Both nights the food was phenomenal, but the second night they were having bingo night and most tables were reserved, but we managed to squeeze in. We did try a third night, because the food was so good, but they had no tables. It is a very small place. Try reserving if you can because the food is good. Check for theme nights if you want to avoid.

Location and food were good. However, we waited one hour (no excuses or explanations by the waitress).

Multiple signs outside say “food served all day.” Walk in, it takes 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge me, only to be told they stopped serving food 20 minutes ago.

Absolutely stunning food. Not a crumb left on the plates. Highly recommended the steak and Guinness pie. Full of steak. Monk fish goujons were exceptional. The burger was stunning and proper chips. 5* . 10/10

Amazing local pub full of friendlies service and atmosphere was first class and food was exceptional all freshly cooked and fish freshly landed same day. No critiscism whatsoever. Highly recommend very reasonable prices for drinks and food - most importantly we will be returning.;

The Red Lion is the best pub in the area. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is great. I'd highly recommend using the pool table and the dart board In conclusion, the Red Lion is a great place and I'd highly recommend it.

It was such an amazing pub. There was a pool table and a dartboard. there is also a beer the food, snacks and drinks were amazing. The pool table is great quality and so is the dartboard. The pub staff were very nice as well. You could talk to the pub staff and they would happily reply and start the conversation. I hope you enjoy going there

Just played a gig here,my first time in the venue,a warm welcome, friendly atmosphere, had a wonderful time. Apparently it's like it all the time,not just when there's a band on!!

last visited on dec 23 2023 where i always go to get a meal after visiting penlee lifeboat in newlin harbour i walk in with my partner and dog the welcome is like ive never been away locals are brilliant and i always have fish of the day taken from the harber that morning noting is too much for the staff i then continue my visit visiting the lifeboat house on pnlee point to remember the brave men who gave there lives to save others then to mousehole pay my respects there then off o paul church to visit the grave of the last fluent cornish speaker and the special memorial window for the penlee disaster

Carinissimo pub stile navale!! Il personale é molto gentile e l'atmosfera frizzante! Consigliata é la loro zuppa di granchio, ma purtroppo non sono riuscita ad assaggiarla perché quando sono passata la cucina era chiusa. La prossima volta magari!

Great Sunday lunch.Delicious food, efficient and friendly service. So lovely to have such a simple choice Choice of roast meat and small or large portion. The small size was generous and perfectly adequate but my husband managed the larger portion. Dog friendly and great non - touristy atmosphere. Will definitely go again.

Great traditional local pub friendly welcome and warm atmosphere

We went in on the off chance and we were warmly greeted. The food arrived very quickly and the meal was fresh and delicious. The fish in particular was very fresh and had a lovely taste. The service was perfect and we were looked after very well checking that everything was to our satisfaction. We'll worth a visit if in the town on a visit!!

We have visited Newlyn twice a year for the past few years and we always book here for dinner, the Crab fish cakes are so tasty. A quite local pub with friendly staff.

Sunday roast... best in Newlyn. Superb. Young staff need bit of monitoring.... smiling etc. But polite enough. Good bands and great set up. Landlady is excellent

The Red Lion looks a bit rough and ready from the outside, but it would be difficult to find a better place for Sunday lunch off-season in Newlyn. Downstairs, tables are crowded into nooks and crannies, but there is a small beer garden up some steps at the back. This was perfect on a sunny day. They only serve roasts on Sunday. These come in two sizes. The “small” one was more than enough. It came with Yorkshire pudding, carrots, parsnips, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, cabbage, a ball of stuffing and a jug of gravy. Even the dog approved, as there was enough to give him a sliver of beef too. Cheerful, friendly staff as well.

We had the famous crab soup for starters, was delicious, lots of crab meat. Fish and chips for main, fish was lovely white and fresh, batter was also fresh and light. Thank you ,lovely meal.

Brilliant local pub, the team that work here are amazing and super friendly. We had the large Sunday roast and yummy plus there was entertainment by the jolly Roger band. Dancing and much fun. You have to try this pub. Cheers from Foz J. Foster

Our lunchtime visit, to a largely deserted pub, resulted in a long wait for food. My own meal was adequate but my husband's lunch, a serving described as 'large haddock' and chips was served to table with two 'small' haddock. The fish content would just about have made one fish finger. When I raised this point with staff I was told that the manager would have to be contacted as bar staff were unable to sanction any reduction. Needless to say we will never go back.

Food was fantastic . Really fresh pub food . The only thing I have a moan about is your not quite Shaw what to do order at the bar or your table but when you are served at either staff very pleasant. Worth a visit for fresh pub food & a bonus dog friendly.

Oh my Lord. Over an hour to get a crab sandwich and a bowl of soup, which, when it arrived, was overpriced and disappointing. Still, the wine and beer were good. Clearly needed more staff.

A nice homely pub, a little rough around the edges, but in a good way. A couple of ales available. Split level, with a pool table. Unfussy atmosphere, worth a look.

Visited with my Mum and my Son. Lovely food, I had the 3 bean chilli nachos, by far the best nachos I’ve ever had, home made tortilla chips, fresh tasting guacamole, all very tasty, my mum had the pulled pork nachos and my son the chicken goujons which he really enjoyed. The staff were lovely, my mum had a fall when she was in there and they were so kind to her as were the other customers! Highly recommended.

Very nice place, good food and nice staff!

Excellent service, especially as we were a group of 8 who booked at the last minute. The food was amazing. The highlight being the crab soup and the crab cakes. The crab cakes were bursting with crab. The food that comes out of that very small kitchen is incredible. The cook worked so hard, The wine was also lovely, which isn’t always the case in small local pubs. We would definitely visit again.

Staff nice Food good Wait far too long for the food to arrive. It’s definitely a pub that serves food. They do well out of a very small kitchen but waiting 90 minutes for our food was too much.

Great pub, with excellent meals and a stunning view of Mount's Bay

You have to come here for the crab soup, it is the best ever! They offer two sizes, the larger size is enough for 2 people to share for a light lunch. It comes with a side of garlic bread which is also very tasty. Staff are friendly and it is a must for the crab soup if you are near Newlyn

My wife and had a wonderful week in Cornwall on our honeymoon where everyone was super friendly, and had a fantastic time until our very last day in Newlyn, when we decided to eat again at the Red Lion due to its great food. We entered the pub and were harassed four times by a drunken local man who complained we had not asked permission to sit down at a table that was not occupied. Despite the staff talking to him about his poor behavior, he continued to harass us even after we moved to another table after apologizing for what ever he didn’t like. Not wanting to expose ourselves to further harassment, we asked for our food to be packed to go. This took almost an hour and the staff did nothing to stop The harassment. For our last night in Cornwall it was a terrible experience. Please visit another pub to avoid harassment from drunken locals !!

On our honeymoon and it was our last night in Newlyn. We were harassed four times in the pub by a drunken local! He claimed we hadn’t asked him whether we could sit at a table that wasn’t occupied!! Even after moving to another table he continued to harass us rudely. He used the C word numerous times. Not wishing to be sworn at and made to feel Unsafe, we asked for our food to go which took an hour. The Staff did nothing to get rid of him. Beware of drunk locals at this pub !! Awful End to our honeymoon in Cornwall 😞

On this visit I have to say everything was to my satisfaction. Very friendly local, great view over Newlyn Harbour, excellent bowl of their famous crab soup with a good amount of fresh tasting crab meat inside, mate loved his as well, and to cap it all the M6 bus from Penzance stops right outside as parking is a bit limited. I will be back dreckly!!

Great atmosphere. A local band played really well, the dancing was fun and I recommend this pub for locals or visitors. We tried their cocktail menu and they were really well made.

We had lunch in the Red Lion yesterday. The food was lovely and the staff warm and friendly. The cheesy chips deserve a special mention, they were delicious! Great coffee too.

Rolled out of our accommodation to this pub, went in a few times and enjoyed every minute of it. We went on a Saturday and listened to the live band, the atmosphere was great and the staff very helpful, an amazing night, we went back...

Great food and friendly service. We were on a tight schedule as had tickets for a film at the Newlyn Filmhouse afterwards (also well worth a visit). As they were a bit short staffed (like a lot of places are just now), we were warned that the food could take over half an hour to come. They were really good, and above all friendly, open and honest about everything and did their best to get us served in time. We just had another round of drinks while waiting and in the end our table's order came in just under the time they'd said, and in time for us to make it to the film without having to rush. The food was great too, so I'll happily give them five stars. Though it wasn't what we had on this occasion, I should mention that the crab soup served there is definitely worth trying. Update: Crab soup still wonderful!

Quaint little pub. Your typical local pub used by the fisherman and locals. Views of the harbour and sea. I've never heard anyone say that the food was bad. I haven't eaten here before but I definitely would come here for a meal

This is a traditional local pub that has retained its character unlike the refurbished fishermans arms up the road. The food was very reasonably priced and was good. The staff were friendly and this place has an atmosphere. I would return here again.

Took my wife and young son to Cornwall in September 2022 on our first family holiday away. We visited Newlyn and the Red Lion and it was fantastic. Made happy memories here and will never forget. Staff are lovely and friendly, the food (crab sandwiches, or cobs as we call them) was great and Tribute tastes a millions miles better than up in the North Mids!

We had a lovely meal here, usual scampi, fish n chips. All fresh and tasty. Would have been 5 ⭐️ But the service was a little lazy, enjoyable experience overall.

The interior was delightful, with decor both colorful and eye-catching. Lots of nooks and crannies, including a warm fire for a cold night.

Down from last weekend and had a very warm welcome despite being somewhat...loud. They even reopened the kitchen to cook an excellent late lunch.

Location was great looking at the fishing boats whilst eating. I have visited Cornwall many times and I can honestly say this was the best crab sandwich I have had. My friends had whitebait, prawn salad and gammon and chips, All of which were excellent. Staff were lovely and helpful . Would highly recommend and will be back on my next visit.

Introduced by friends whom came on a beer trail. What a secret they kept. Am prob the worst food an beer critic you could find but could not fault any item I ate or different beer I drank. Fourth visit and quality still 100%. What more could you ask from superb staff who make it all work. Fortnightly visits has now been agreed.

The Red Lion is a good pub. A broader beer selection would be nice but the two ales are well kept. All the staff are lovely. Food is ample and well cooked. Can highly recommend the crab soup.

Had food here recently whilst on a hoilday in Cornwall . We dined out every night for the 7 days we were there and this was the best meal we had ! The crab soup was delicous , all the meals were freshly cooked and very tasty , excellent value for money , staff were all very helpul . Would highly recommend a visit if in the area .

Obviously we went there for our evening Pint of ale, but when we decided to have dinner we were blown away. From the crab soup starter to the mains of crab cakes and fish & chips we got quality, tasty food that one would expect of only the top rated restaurants.
