Amazing Sunday lunch today, food was delicious there was 8 of us and everyone enjoyed it. Meat was so tender and great portions. Fab value for money and lovely atmosphere 😃

Very welcoming with lovely atmosphere. We hadn’t booked a table but the staff looked after us and found us a place to eat. Menu suited many tastes , Everything was cooked to perfection Infact it was one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time! Table service was great and we were well looked after! 14 of us booked for lunch at the Red Lion to celebrate for my Aunty's 80th birthday. We chose the Red Lion because it was owned by my grandparents in the late 60s and 70s so the place holds a special place for many of us who attended. The atmosphere was lovely and Rob & Amanda (landlord/lady) couldn't do enough for us all, including allowing us to bring a birthday cake and have balloons on the table (they'd even put their own happy birthday banners on the wall!). Some of us were late arriving but they were happy to put off preparing the food until we were all ready which was appreciated. When the food did arrive, we were very impressed with the quality and incredible value for money. It was very well prepared and presented, the portions were ample too. The menu prices are so cheap, it was like we'd stepped back 20 years! The ale choice was very good too and the friendly atmosphere generated by the staff and locals helped to make it a special day. My Aunty was absolutely thrilled with how her special day went. Thanks again Rob & Amanda, we wish you every success with the Red Lion, you deserve it. We look forward to returning when next in the area.

Party of 18, pre ordered. Excellent food, meat cooked well, Service was great with everyone polite and friendly, asking if we needed anything else. Also made extra effort as some of our party wanted extra servings etc. Good selection of beers. Recommended

So nice to go out for lunch where everything was just right. We both had baguettes which were warm & well filled, served with salad & some really good crisps. We also had a side order of chips that were the best we've had in a very long time. One bowl was enough for 2. Along with the drinks then coffees it was excellent. All served by attentive staff, can't wait to return and try more meals from the menu.

Nine of us gathered today for a Christmas Buffet lunch, and not to put too fine a point on it, we were astounded by the skill, care and quality that went into the marvellous array of goodies. Savouries like chicken fillets, the most delightful samosas, nano-blinis, tiny Yorkshire puddings and meat pies, sausages, perfect mini-quiches, pakoras, with delicious dips, tear and share hot bread, and on and on. The range and quantity of delights was truly outstanding. Outside of a five star luxury cruise liner, this is the best buffet, at any price, that I ever had. At the very modest price of £10 a head, this deserves as much acclaim as we can muster. Amanda and Rob and their team are such lovely, warm and obliging hosts, and all deserve the sincere applause and heartfelt thanks that every one of us has to offer. If you haven't yet discovered the glory of the Red Lion, don't just sit there staring at your computer; get down there and feast and make merry. You owe it to yourself and as many chums as you can take with you to celebrate life, and there is nowhere better.

We booked 30 mins in advance on remembrance Sunday - no problem. A very generous Sunday lunch with plenty of veg, large Yorkie n stuffing, 3 large slices of roast beef/roast pork - perfectly cooked. The only thing was too generous with the gravy & the veg a tad overcooked veg for our liking we both thought. Would recommend still, lovely atmosphere & welcoming, £12 each. Thankyou

Family get together, 8 of us. The meal was booked well in advance together with pre-ordering. We were booked in for 2pm and just about on time we were shown to our table. We waited and waited, we drew the attention of one of the staff who said she wood find out why we had not been served. Apparently the pre order had been mis-placed. Another member of staff came to check our order. We had ordered 8 roast beef dinners plus one to take away so 9 in total. We waited and waited, it was suggested by one of the group that we should just leave, we decided to give them a little longer. Eventually just after 3.15pm 4 dinners arrived. It was five more minutes when the other 4 were brought to the table. We settled on the one course, it may have been supper time if we waited for desserts. We must have spent in the region of £200 for food and drinks. There was no gesture of goodwill forthcoming only a sorry for the “small” blip by the member of staff. Not overly impressed.

The Red Lion has been on a rocky road for a few years, but I’m delighted to report that it’s back, and fully restored in terms of quality of food, surroundings, value for money and service. This oasis of joy has everything: great food at astonishingly low prices, warm and swift service from lovely ladies, plenty of car parking, comfortable seating and surroundings. In these difficult days of smaller portions and higher prices, the Red Lion stands out as the best value for money for miles around. The new owners, Amanda and Rob, deserve great praise, and my chums and I will come here every chance we get. I can’t think of another pub within a 30 mile radius which is this good. Five stars well earned!

Excellent Village Pub with original features & early evening buzzing atmosphere. Reasonably priced varied menu. Good hearty food & friendly service. Immaculate inside & there is a lovely terrace outside with safe play area. I would definitely recommend & will visit again very soon.

Great Sunday lunch , had the pork wow , always welcoming atmosphere friendly staff. Can’t fault the drinks love the BG sips etc. And don’t forget the chips can’t resist them.

The food was well portioned and hot. However everything that contained cheese was complete overkill. The burgers were over cooked. The lasange was drowning in cheese and meat but dry and tasteless. Overall it was a huge disappointment considering we were there for an occasion....

Been in this pub a few times after moving to Selston. Took family members for a drink and found the Landlady extremely rude. I walked out and left my drink and I can say I definitely won’t be returning.

Went for dinner on a Sunday, 4 adults and 2 children... Nice play area outside,,, kept the grandchildren entertained whilst we had a couple of drinks... Nice real ales,,, good service and very pleasant staff... We all had the slow roast lamb shank so cannot comment too much on the menu other than the lamb was lovely,,, kids appeared happy with their choice from their menu... The sweets were good,,, all round a very pleasant Sunday lunch...

We visited in mid July 2019. We had been going there quite frequently over the last year or so but the two lady Chefs who both serve up the best fish and chips you've ever tasted have gone, and the place has just fallen apart. Food terrible. Service appalling. Beer not kept right - dreadful! Don't know why the two lady Chefs are no longer there, but when I asked the Landlady she clearly didn't want to say anything, and gave me one of those sort of looks that says it all. My guess is the ladies couldn't work for her. I think this Landlady is new. Not that long ago the Manager of the Hayloft at Giltbrook took over. He was pretty useless at keeping beer but the two ladies stayed with him and continued to serve up good meals. We reckon he must have moved on and we've decided to do the same. We'll not be going back. Shame. I will miss my Halloumi Salads very much!

Dropped in for weekday lunch, received pleasant welcome. Plenty of choice of from burgers and light bites to salads, main course and grills. All dishes were reasonably priced, no fuss and tasty, plenty of fresh veg with my baked dish from the specials of the day. Beer was well tapped, surroundings inside were spotless.

Went yesterday after a busy morning - looking for the ambiance of nearly our local, with a view to staying for Sunday lunch. Well that didn't happen only 2 customers eating at 2.00pm ish Sunday? Never ever been & experienced that. No atmosphere at All! No one outside enjoying the family garden.Then to make us feel really out of place overheard theManager arguing with the kitchen cooks over rotas for next week! Food always lovely when we visit which has always been often but not going for a while now . Very disappointed loved the food & people on front of staff in past - not now nothing else to to say.

Seriously can't believe the negative reviews. We visit on a regular basis and always find the staff to be so friendly and helpful and the food incredibly good value, the 2 for £12 menu just can't be faulted ... you just need to arrive on time to take advantage!!! But even if you arrive a little late you can still order from that menu for just £0.99 pence per meal extra.

We arrived 5 minutes before their early evening two for £12 deal finished so knew we needed to be quick choosing our options to make use of the offer.Entering the pub, I headed towards the eating area where there were menus laid out on tables. The waitress offered no assistance so we sat down and selected our choices. We were then told to move tables - apparently menus on the table indicate a reserved table. Tend to find a Reserved sign much clearer myself! Still a minute to go, waitress finally came over to take our order. She seemed to know nothing about the deal and went to check with the manager. By the time she came back it was 31 minutes past 6 according to the clock on the wall, and we were not permitted to order from the deal.We tried to speak to the manager as we really couldn’t believe that this was the case, given we’d arrived at 25 past and had to move tables... but she was having none of it. Very poor customer service and a shock to see pubs can afford to turn away custom in such a way. We left and visited the Shepherd’s Rest close by. Very welcoming hosts and great food. I know where we’ll be going next time...!We didn’t go out looking for a “deal” but when we see a deal advertised it’s always tempting. In this case the inflexible manager who was unable to comprehend that we were ready to order in time left a very bad taste in the mouth. We happily paid more for welcoming service. Red Lion’s loss. Try the Shepherd’s Rest!!!

Four of us visited on a Saturday evening. The manager was extremely helpful as I required a gluten free meal. All the food was scrummy yummy and not one moan or complaint from anyone. Definitely recommend and will visit again 😊

Sat at the bar waiting to be served, Bar person appeared didn't acknowledge us and proceeded to serve a table that were sat in the corner. We only pointed out we were in fact next to get a hostile response that we weren't, surely it should of been a more friendly "sorry...." for whatever the reason was. After saying the response was out of order and we as the customer were right, we were told if we don't like it go somewhere else. This used to be a nice very popular village pub, which has completely gone to the dogs. I have never experience or witnessed such rudeness in my life before,this person isn't fit to serve the public! No wonder it has gone down hill if this is the type of staff they have, I have heard the food isn't much better. If you like microwave meals your ok!!

We had our usual and always enjoy it here! Know the staff well and they never fail to disappoint. Well done team, we will be back!

Small pub in a small village near underwood, one room 12ish tables so need to book to avoid disappointment, great atmosphere great service, generous portions, very good quality, reasonable prices. New menu next week, so looking forward to extra choices to try,so much so we booked straight away.

I visit the Red Lion on a regular basis and am never disappointed. The food is always delicious and well presented and the staff are very friendly and very accommodating. I would highly recommend.

Went to the Red Lion today for lunch with my husband. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Nice relaxed atmosphere in an old world setting and the staff were both friendly and helpful.

My wife & I were treated to lunch here, she had the Steak Pie & I had the Scamp, both well cooked and very filling, we can strongly say it is well worth a visit.

Visited again for food last night and absolutely superb again, really hospitable landlord Pete and all the team go that extra mile. Thanks Again

Food is fairly good quality, although the menu isn't that extensive. Beer is also limited range, but generally well kept. Very limited drinking area, with most of pub set up for dining. Has car parking and play areas.

We hadn’t been to the Red Lion for a few years and was pleasantly surprised. We had a rump steak and salmon with a white wine sauce and cheese cake. Both meals were cooked from scratch- homemade chips, fresh veg...highly recommend if you are looking for no nonsense traditional pup food!

Have eaten at this delightful atmospheric country pub many times and the menu is varied, food well prepared and excellent value for money. Drinks are realistically priced.

We've recently visited for weekday lunch & again for an evening meal. Warm welcome & good food (even the food on the 2 for £12 menu was good). My vegetarian brother in law was particularly impressed with the vegetarian options on the menu which he said were a more imaginative than the usual veggie options. ...........chips were excellent!

I was here for a mid week lipunchtime leaving do celebration with colleagues. Very enjoyable food. I had a vegetarian curry and the quality of the food was outstanding and the price very reasonable. Good portion sizes.

A very warm welcome at this cosy country pub . Amazing value ! We had Fish and chips the home made chips were so tasty ! Fish fluffy light and crispy batter mushy peas so tasty and piping hot and all well presented better than some top restaurants !! Our other meal was a steak baguette the bread was amazing and the steak perfectly cooked with an appetising salad trim . With drinks the bill came to just £17.00 . Bar lady couldn't have been more pleasant will return . Thankyou !

Best place for Sunday lunch, food is excellent and service very good. Expensive than most but you get what you pay for. One thing to watch out for if you’re tall is your head on the ceiling... oldy worldy tradition old pub with low ceilings. Thanks!

Visited on Friday at 2.45 not realising food stopped at 2.30pm but Dan and the Chef made every effort to cook us what we wanted. Absolutely over and above the call of duty, the food ( fish & chips) were great. Thanks for great food and superb service.

We had heard good things about this pub and as we were in the area we decided to call in for lunch.

Came for a beer and something to eat ,,,,, but when ordering our first drink we found the girl behind the bar was very ignorant and unwelcoming,,,,, decided to drink up and go to the local chippy.

Was a regular up to about year ago and on our return was pleased to once again warmly greeted with a plentiful homely cooked roast which was also very good value for money. Will definitely be coming back and I must say the belly porks a must.

Lovely little pub, food was ok and what you would expect from a little country pub. Service was ok at the bar when first arrived but different at the table, was never asked if we wanted dessert or coffees and staff were almost standoffish with our table, staff seemed to be spend more time chatting to friends than servicing customers needs, no management present and no comment card to leave instance feedback.

It's been a while since we visited this restaurant and we were very impressed with the quality of the roasts and the fish and chips meal was huge - it defeated our son!. Service was timely and the staff were most efficient.

Have been here a few times and was worried about it getting taken over but went here twice a couple of weeks ago with suppliers and it was fantastic. All home cooked and my guests were complimentary. Will be back again for sure and excellent value and lovely staff. Food was amazing and steak cooked to perfection and loved the home made chips.

We ordered lunchtime meals for two 27th Feb. Soup of the day was leek and smoked cheese which didn't quite work and bread rolls were not quite cooked, raw in the centres, both butters had been put on hot plates and when opened literally poured out of the foil. Three little pigs meal sounded great but the belly pork was dry and chewy, ham hock pie was almost non existent, barely any ham, in a tiny pot with brittle and hard pastry which was inedible, and the Toad in the Hole consisted of two tiny Frozen Yorkshire puddings which were not cooked properly, flat, heavy and inedible with two small links of Gloucester spot sausages on the side (this is NOT toad in the hole!) Vegetables consisted of a few slices of carrot, frozen peas and a very tiny amount of curly kale. Very disappointing, however my husband's steak pie with chips was good. Overall very expensive for pub food particularly when one meal was so badly cooked. I didn't send it back as hungry following a long 3 hour journey and just wanted food before going home but we will not be returning. Pleasant waitress but very slow service considering barely anyone in the pub. I expressed my thoughts before we left but no refund on the bill despite leaving plenty on the plate. If we had more time I would normally have sent it straight back. We will not be returning.

Great little village pub. Under new owners with Noel at the helm, lovely food served with a smile from all the friendly staff. Real ales and a new refurb to bathrooms and more on the way. Definitely worth a visit

Took my mum and family tonight for a birthday meal. Unfortunately the meal wasn't very nice at all.

We booked a table for eight and on arrival everything was ready for us. We ordered drinks at the bar where the staff were very helpful then ordered food at the table where again the waitress was very pleasant and helpful. When the food arrived we couldn't believe the size of the portions for the price we were paying, they were massive. The food was all cooked to a high standard and we all enjoyed our evening.

We used to dine here once or twice a week until some 18 months ago. I can't remember why we stopped going; maybe fancied a change? During that time, we heard many people say that the food and service was not as good as it used to be. Wednesday night we had "nothing in" so a table was booked. (I have to say that we did try two other restaurants who had no availability at the time we wanted). The greeting was friendly and welcoming. Our food arrived promptly and we were well looked after by the waiting staff. All the rumours of poor food and service were ill founded. If you were one of the people who have been put off visiting, give them the opportunity to change your mind! It is worth a visit.

I visited here last night with my husband, daughter and grandchildren. My husband had the chicken which he enjoyed and the kids meals were good. My daughter had the gammon which was plentiful and I had the rump steak and skinny fries - fries were great but steak had lots of fatty bits inside, looked perfect on the outside! I did pass my comments on to the staff who were very accommodating but at £13 for a rump steak it should be nicer although I appreciate that the chef can't see inside!

We went to the red lion on Sunday as a family of eight. The meat eaters amongst us really enjoyed their Sunday dinner in this lovely real old English pub setting. The service was great, our waitress was smiley and helpful. We rang ahead as two of us in our party requested a vegan meal. We had a beautifully prepared and presented option given to us. It is so nice to go somewhere where the chef prepares a meal for those with different dietary requirements with as much care as the rest of the menu.

I'll start by saying g the staff were brilliant and the quality of the food was excellent, but the simplified/ reduced menu was very disappointing

Delicious lunch a good varied menu, I had steak & kidney pie, tender pieces of steak & just the right amount of kidney cooked to perfection, served with mash & mushy peas, my husband went for the carved ham, eggs & chips equally as good. We where full but couldn't resist the homemade treacle sponge & custard, yummy. The staff where friendly & efficient, glad we went back after reading some bad reviews, any problems have obviously been sorted because we couldn't fault this friendly, cosy, quaint country pub. We will definitely be booking an evening meal very soon.

We booked on a Saturday evening to celebrate a birthday. It's a lovely country pub with parking and a good outside play area. I chose cajun salmon with roasted potoes and salmon off the specials board, my husband and son ordered burgers with fries and coleslaw, which all of us enjoyed. We also ordered desserts and coffee, which were also well presented and tasty. A great place with good food and friendly staff. I would definately visit again.

Having been going to red lion for several years, can honestly say meal and service was very disappointing. This place has definitely gone in decline. Menu was basic, service terrible, asked for additional drinks, they never came. Asked for desert menu, waited 15 mins no one came to take order. So we left and paid, had dessert at queens head watnall. Should have had meal there as wouldn't have been disappointed. What happened red lion, it used to be so good.

Having been here before many times, we were looking forward to our Friday evening meal. What a disappointment it was, in a few words I'll explain.

Well a great visit, small compact but interesting menu which guaranteed freshly cooked food. It was quite busy. My wife and i were not disappointed, the meal was cooked fresh and of good quality,presented nicely. Not a boil in the bag chain restaurant meal.The service by staff who were youngish was good there might have been a little bit of inexperience but anyone can nitpick if they wish. Overall it was a good experience and we will be re-visiting.

The service was non existent. Did not get offered sweet or coffee. I think they wanted us out before the quiz. Not enough sauce and it made the chicken dry but mash fab.Good quiz but food and and service needs more attention. I have had better pedigree too. Very mixed bunch.

I booked our office Christmas lunch here on 1st Dec for 16 people and we had a wonderful time! The food and service was excellent and we had a choice of both the normal daily menu and the Christmas menu which meant that all tastes and requirements were catered for.

Went to the Red Lion for Sunday Lunch with my husband. The staff were very friendly and intentive. Order the crayfish cocktail which was a starter , it was fabulous loads of crayfish. I had roast beef for main which also was very delicious plenty veg and massive Yorkshire puddings. Would go back any day.

We went on a Wednesday night and had no trouble booking for five on a family members birthday. The menu had a good variety of dishes covering a range of prices and a specials board was displayed on the wall.

Had lasagne here recently! Wonderful presentation with nice flavours. Side order of chips.. A+ best chips I have tasted for a long time! Dish was let down only by the garlic bread that was dry and hard. This was disappointing as the rest of the dish was full of flavour! Nice glass of wine to go with the meal. All in all definitely rate and will certainly be coming back soon! Pleasant staff and good value for money!

Never had a bad meal at the red lion. Went on a Friday 'fizz Friday' ! Had bottle of decent prosecco for a tenner and a huge plate of fish and chips each again just under £10 each. Great value and great food lovely surroundings and fab service. Been many times including Xmas day always assured a great time.

Wonderful food lovely relaxed atmosphere, attentive staff. We are ladies that lunch and will definitely put this pub on our list and return again soon
