I would have given a 4.5 if I could! First time here and we weren’t disappointed, the staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was very good, my reason for less than a 5 was the main was served on a stone cold plate! I’ve not eaten in a restaurant that doesn’t warm the plates for years.

We had our family Christmas meal here. We were a group of 16. We booked in advance and the menu looked really good . We had Calamari as a starter. This was crispy, tasty and well presented. We had Pork beef and venison stew for our main. This was brilliant! There was loads of meat in it and the dumplings were so tasty. To finish this off, we had cheesecake for dessert. This did not disappoint, probably the best cheesecake I have had from a restaurant.

We where visiting Norfolk & recommended the Red Lion by our hostess. It offered a good menu with a choice of gluten free for me (wouldn’t be writing this review if it didn’t!). The service was friendly, polite & relaxed. We were asked if there were any other allergies or intolerances other than gluten - to me, always a good sign that there is an understanding of requirements. The food was delicious & plentiful! Hubby is not GF & tucked into a seafood salad platter, I had the GF chicken with pulled pork - so tasty! The only downside was we were too full to have desert, they looked amazing! ;-)

Well The Red Lion what can I say , lovely looking pub , exterior and interior, fantastically friendly staff and even the locals are friendly as well . This pub was a second choice for a meal but to be honest I’m glad we had to change venues, though I know the food would have been good in the previous pub as well . Really did stumble across this pub but what a fantastic food venue , old but with a modern twist and the prices were very reasonable, 4 of us had different kinds of burger and two had desserts, with coffee and drinks worked out roughly £25 a head can’t rate this place high enough and will certainly be going back again

We booked for 16 people originally to celebrate my 60th birthday. Numbers reduced due to Covid. Paul and his team were very helpful and the 10 of us who made the evening were extremely well looked after. It was lovely to have a separate vegan menu with different dishes other than the norm and there was plenty of choice for non-vegans. Nice seasonal menu which changes every few weeks. All in all , great food surrounded by good friends made for a very special evening. We will be back.

My family and I were visiting Norfolk for the October half term holiday. After some searching online I came across this lovely little village pub about 25 minute drive from where we were staying (Thetford Forest Lodges). The pub is very nicely decorated and is welcoming. Staff were following covid rules. As it was Sunday we all wanted roasts, they usually do 2 meat options plus a veggie option. The roasts available were pork and beef. Two of us had beef and one had pork. My son ordered the burger fries and beans (he enjoyed his meal) The meat on the roasts was perfectly cooked, really decent portion. The plate came with the meat, Yorkshire, stuffing, lovely fluffy but crispy roast potatoes and gravy, the veg and cauliflower cheese came out seperatly which was also perfectly cooked. We didn’t have time for pudding as we were travelling back home. Would highly recommend. Very good value for money, the roast was £12. We would return again :)

I have visited the Red Lion on and off for 20 years and over time depending on the owner- it has delighted and disappointed. However dinner with friends on Saturday night was a masterclass in how a great local village pub should be run. The ambience was right, the lighting was right and the best surprise was the timing was right.. that unknown gap between sitting down and being asked to order, between ordering and drinks arriving, food arriving etc - they just nailed it; so rare these days. The food was exactly as was hoped for. This pub has just gone back on my list of local pubs to frequent. You should definitely visit.

The children's menu was again simple but delious and of very good quality. The highlight was the apple and blackcurrant crumble which is the best crumble I have ever eaten! We had a marvelous Sunday lunch today, the pub is beautiful, spotless and tastefully furnished to compliment the beauty of the building. We had baked Camembert with homemade bread to dip in!! Very well presented with even a tiny cut in the hot cheese so it Oooozed YUM!! We had 2 glasses of lovely Merlot served in just the right glasses, (not that im fussy!!) We then had our main course, Roast Beef, the Yorkshires were delightful, they were a pudding rather than an oversized "whacker" on the plate full of fresh air that you get in so many gastro pubs now days... nor were they a shop bought yorkie named after someones Aunt the yorkies had so much flavour as did the roast potatoes, beef was nicely cooked. My delight was the Cauli cheese sadly not seen much anymore in many pubs and this one was exceptional and because my Hubby dose not eat Cauli, they packed the rest up for me to enjoy later at home WOW!! , there were buttered greens, red cabbage, brocolli and carrot to keep him happy!! The service was slick and efficient with happy welcoming staff! We will definatley return for a roast again even though its an hours drive from us, and in the summer will trek down for an evening meal. Places like this now days are few and far between. Thanks all!! Shalom x

We were really looking forward to eating here after reading the reviews. I booked a table a good few weeks in advance. Unfortunately it seems like not being a local meant that customer service went out the window. We were ignored when we turned up. When we were eventually shown our table we squashed in a corner. We waited 15mins for them to take our order and even then I had to ask someone....we hadnt even got a drink and even then he was walking off before I'd ordered mine. The food was lovely. We ordered dessert but it was only when we went to pay that I saw mine should have come with icecream....he would tell the chef but no discount! Even getting to pay I was blanked until someone else stood behind me (as I knew there was no point waiting at the table). I have never experienced service so rude as this, which is a shame as it over shadowed the nice food. We should have walked out at the start but staying in the village and not knowing the area, we didn't know where else to go. We had only come here to eat at Benedict's in Norwich for my birthday, so least we know we will have a great time there and be treated like any other customer. Shame on you Red Lion for making us feel like dirt!

Proper old style pub with a fantastic restaurant. We had booked to stay in the village and were recommended to try the Red Lion, but were told it gets very busy so not to go too late. We duly walked up at 6pm when we knew the restaurant would open and were greeted warmly and shown to our table. Hubby had the beef cobbler and I had a filo goats cheese tart, both meals were piping hot, looked fantastic on the plate and tasted phenomenal! I was absolutely stuffed after my meal but hubby followed his with a cheese plate which again was more then generous. Whilst we were eating the restaurant filled very quickly so I could see why we were advised to go sonnet than later. After we vacated the table we went through to the bar which was also fairly busy but not too packed, we sat at a table and I discovered the box of board games supplied by the pub we had a really great evening playing draughts and snakes and ladders. A very large party dominated about half the restaurant, the kitchen failed to cope with the workload with the result that we waited almost an hour after ordering (which was less than prompt in itself) before any food arrived. Booking others at about the same time as this big party was a huge mistake by management.

We arrived on the off chance that we could get a table. We were warned that we might have a wait, we didn't really wait very long at all. Hubby had the chicken and pulled pork and I had the portabello mushrooms both utterly delicious. This is somewhere we have wanted to visit for a while but it is not open every day. Decor is simple. Tables are solid. Staff pleasant. There is a good range on the menu and specials board which would suit most dietary requirements. Will definitely visit again - few more things on the menu I want to try.

My husband booked for us to go for an evening meal on a Saturday night as we had not been since it changed hands years ago. We looked on-line to see the menu but was only able to see a picture of the specials board. We parked directly outside and had a friendly greeting. The restaurant was almost full bar three tables which filled up whilst we were there. The decor is lovely and tables were not too close together. There seems to be a mix of older families, couples and large group tables there. We didn't have a starter but had fish and chips and the belly pork, both of which were really nice. We both had puddings, spotted dick and cheesecake which were nice, with larger and glass of wine cost £46. We felt the price was right for the meal. It was nicer than a pub, not fine dining, but somewhere in between. It looked like it may have been husband and wife running the restaurant who were both very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely go back, either as a couple, with our older boys or with my group of girlfriends. There were outside tables where locals were having a drink. The menu was nice and varied; with a specials board too. Food was hot, served quickly and was plentiful. No complaints at all and would definitely be back. Nice to have this so close to where we live.

While visiting Norfolk I have had two very impressive meals at the Red Lion. My first visit was on 30 April when I first arrived in the U.K. My sister and brother in Law had booked lunch for us informing the staff when booking that I was vegan. I must admit I was not expecting a special dish , just maybe a adjustment to a meal already on the menu, but they kindly responded by making me a delicious asparagus risotto . My family enjoyed their meals stating they were excellent to.The staff made us feel very welcome with big smiles and a happy attitude, offering us a drink and menu as soon as we arrived . The resturant is spotless, and tastefully decorated and service impeccable. We also attended the 'vegan night' they had a week later, and that was excellent, something I never expected in a country pub. The resturant has been full each time I have been there, and I hope this wonderful place will always do well, it deserves too.Thank you very much Jan from Australia

Having Recently moved to a village not far from the Red Lion, we found ourselves walking here every weekend for a quick drink. Last week we booked a table for dinner for ourselves and 2 friends and found the food to be absolutely fantastic, especially the oven baked camembert and game cobbler. Menu and food well worthy of rosettes. And with friendly and welcoming staff this is indeed a little gem in the countryside.

We visited as part of a weekend away to Attleborough and visited the pub at numerous occasions during the weekend. The pub was lovely to go to for an early doors so we decided to book for Sunday lunch which we certainly didn't regret. The roast was amazing; the turkey was perfectly done and the gravy and Yorkshire pudding was to die for! Will definitely be heading back for a roast soon!!

Have known about the Red Lion in Caston for some time but over the past 3 or 4 years it has been open, closed and under new management several times. So it's been off our radar. Impromptu dinner choice tonight. Current management been here about a year and a half. Quiet Thursday evening. Fabulous menu. Really tasty choices. We had squid special and melting Camembert followed by meltingly delicious lamb and game cobbler. Then had to have crumble and sticky toffee pudding! Really well presented food. Relaxed surroundings and cosy bar. This pub deserves to be much busier and more people should know about it and give it a try. They are open Wednesday to Sunday. Well worth a visit.

Lovely country pub restaurant in the village of Caston. The pub itself is beautifully decorated and feels relaxed and welcoming. The house white wine was delicious, a great start. We ordered a starter of filo tart with goats cheese and spinach followed by sea bass on a chorizo and butter bean cassoulet with tempura samphire both of which were delicious and beautifully presented. A dish of gruyere and pea risotto with scallops was also ordered and it was again very tasty.Dessert was sticky toffee pudding which was so beautifully decorated, a perfect picture on a plate. The prices are slightly high but you get what you pay for.All in all I couldn't fault the food and will definitely return.

the building and decoration make this place look warm and welcoming but to discover that it was barely busy was a surprise. However the reception by the staff was very cool, and not particularly welcoming. Perhaps this is why it was quiet? The menu was a little disappointing and gluten free options were particularly limited with staff appearing hesitant to push the kitchen and ask about specific meals or possible adaptions. Currently only open for part of the week and with staff attitudes its unlikely to be extending anytime soon.

I spent a wonderful evening at the Red Lion Caston enjoying one of their first monthly theme nights. This was a curry themed evening and the staff had clearly gone to a lot of effort. The pub itself was decorated in an Indian style which really set the mood. The food was simply superb, we had starters of poppadoms and various chutneys followed by four different curries with rice, mushroom pakoras, onion bhaji and naan breads, I was very impressed to learn that everything was homemade even the chutneys and the naan breads! The beef curry was melt in your mouth and the chicken korma was succulent. Amazingly this was all for £15!!The desert was beautifully presented and even the coffee arrived with a homemade Indian style biscuit, a delightful touch. The evening was a huge success and it was clear from the great atmosphere from the other diners that everyone enjoyed themselves. My congratulations to the chef I look forward to the next theme night.

It's a shame this lovely little venue is still closed down even now covid regulations have lifted but fortunately they still do food takeaway /delivery. I couldn't find the menu online to see what they offer, but I was able to call and as it was Sunday order the Sunday roast. This is available as a small or large, which is a nice option, as I personally prefer a smaller portion. I did ask if they had a vegan option , which they didn't but as a one off I had the vegetarian nut roast and was able ask for it without the Yorkshire or cauliflower cheese. Even as a small portion , it was really generous and had lots of vegetables, which makes me happy. Would certainly order from here again and even more so I look forward to this venue opening its doors hopefully soon, so I can enter the venue for food and drinks .

We had dinner here. It's a lovely traditional pub with a huge Charles I fireplace in the restaurant which is well worth seeing. The food was delicious - homemade - and the portion size was very generous (see photo). Unfortunately I didn't have room for dessert - next time I'll make sure yo be properly hungry! Highly recommended.
