Incredibly chatty and friendly bar staff. All efficiently working together which is what you love to see. Had a fantastic medium rare steak juicy and divine. Can't believe this place is rated 4.1 should be atleast 4.5 plus the standard of service being exceptional too.

Attended a private function, was a great set up. Good food and atmosphere. Is also dog friendly which is a bonus!

Had to write our orders for food and drink down and take order to bar, quite a task when there is eight of you. Order placed to then be told they didn't have any sirloin steak. Chose rump steak instead medium to well done 12oz. When it arrived it was two thin 6oz steak and two guests found it was undercooked, one meal was sent back. The table was made out of planks of uneven wood with indentations which were dangerous when you put a drink down as it could tip over. Four guests were expected to sit in a long bench which was uncomfortable and we had it changed for chairs. Staff had to go away and find out what desserts were available. One bar staff didn't even know how to use the pump to make a soda and lime. We used to enjoy the food and waiter service here but we won't be returning.

A lovely little bar/restaurant with great food and good atmosphere and very helpful staff.

We travelled from Cheshire to spend the weekend with family and booked a table to eat before we traveled back home. Food was cooked fresh and good quality. I would recommend the chunky chips! This is a no frills, down to earth traditional pub. We will be back to try the Sunday roast.

My daughter had her wedding reception here, staff were exceptionally helpful and provided a wonderful buffet, atmosphere was brilliant. A night to remember for all the right reasons.

Relaxing place on a Sunday afternoon.

Fabulous afternoon tea this lunchtime with family. Excellent communication when booking. Totally understood dietary requirements and did a suitable one for my husband. Beautiful selection of sweet and savoury food including a warm and delicious scotch egg. Excellent service. The staff waited until we had fed twin babies before bringing out the food as requested by us. They were very attentive and understanding. We also had the added bonus of a singer (who was there as part of another group booking) who added something extra All in all a perfect experience x

Haven't been to red lion for a while and was really looking forward to going. I ordered 3 different things off the menu only to be told they hadn't got any of them, so ended up with something I didn't really want. Our server was very pushy and rude, was trying to rush me into ordering and eventually when we were ready he was no where to be seen. It wasn't busy 6 people 3 couples. More staff than customers stood round doing nothing Certainly won't be going back, what ever happened to the red lion. Food was lovely, staff considerate. Not anymore

Good choice of freshly cooked meals. Quality of ingredients obviously high and portion size a little too large if I am honest but excellent value nonetheless. Lovely professional service too from the staff despite clearly being busy - will definitely make this a regular.

Called into the pub at lunch time with husband to break up a long journey … the food was lovely and well presented, with no lengthy wait … big portions that were well worth the money. The staff were welcoming and efficient … definitely recommend!

Been in today , Saturday 10th Feb ,a table of 12 people , I had the fish and chips , the batter on the fish was soggy , the chips were far to big , like wedges and not cooked properly , they were hard , the fish wasn't cooked properly and I left more than 2 thirds of it , never once came over and asked if it was alright , many people weren't happy and finally decided to clear the table when we were ready to leave , 45 minutes later , will not be going back

Having had decent meals here before including boxing day last year tonight was a big disappointment the roast beef dinner was in fact 2 thin slices of packet beef not from a roast joint as expected potatoes were a sloppy mush & yorkshire puddings were the frozen kind previously had homemade ones. No stuffing or cranberry sauce with turkey either. My husband fared better with the fishcakes which he enjoyed. Starters ok desserts nothing to write home about. Children's meals took ages coming and had to chase up ice creams no starter so sat waiting try telling a 3yr old she has to wait. All in all a big disappointment obvious waiting staff didn't want to be there. Tried asking for a coffee but told machine out of order (jury out on that one) Party of 9 adults 2 children will be going elsewhere next year on this showing (last year couldn't have desserts due to staff wanting to leave) as stared overall a disappointing meal out As of February still not responded to our complaint very disappointing customer service all I wanted was some some sort of apology/explanation as to why our meals were quite frankly awful on this occasion will not be revisiting

Unfortunately the food was awful. Partner had all 3 meats on the roast, they were all grey and tasted horrible. I had the veggie lasagna which was tasteless and had no crisp to it. Disappointed:(

Boxing day meal for 9 adults & 2 children 3 courses kids didn't get starter despite paying half full price Had to sit watching adults also their meals came out very last min in spite of asking for them first one very hungry 3 year old with good appetite not pleased neither were family. Starters ok tho prawns small frozen ones & not many salad was limp guessing previous day salmon fishcakes mostly potato veg hard & undercooked cold turkey but the worst was sliced cheap sandwich beef for 'traditional roast beef dinner' frozen yorkshires gravy thin & watery no stuffing on turkey & no other condiments offered no one checked to see if food ok ate mine because very hungry rather than enjoyed it waitress miserable clearly didn't want to be there only saw 2 staff to top it all kids ice cream overlooked had to chase up that plus one adult desert then abruptly refused to serve coffee for £22,50 /£11.25 kids (for miniscule plate & late rock hard ice cream ) all in all a very disappointing meal been twice before on boxing day & other family meals ut on this showing will never come again. Between us must have spent well over £350 with drinks for a most disappointing 'festive meal' also the table was very uneven causing spilt drinks.

Along with friends we booked the festive menu.. Boxing Day night. Startes were fine.. The main courses were let down by the state of the vegetables.. Sprouts/Cauliflower were hard (undercooked!) and COLD..shredded carrots and parsnips luke warm.. The mash potatoes were only hot because the meat had been placed on top..Deserts were fine.. probably the best part of the meal. Service was not as good as previous years. No clearing up when meals had been finished.. Had to finish the evening talking over dirty plates. Not a good experience this time.. spoilt the evening for many. Now considering other establishments for future meals.

Just to give people an idea of the service we received. I booked a table for 12:30 for the festive menu for my friend and myself, on arrival I spoke to the lady at the bar to confirm our reservation and explained we were having the festive menu, she took a look in the book and replied”well it’s not in the book”. I explained we had pre ordered and she asked what we wanted when I said two turkey dinners, Christmas pudding and a cinnamon and apple crumble she replied “apple crumble isn’t on the menu just a minute I will have a word with the kitchen” I did point out I had an e mail confirmation but she didn’t seem interested. My friend and I were appalled at her attitude and lack of manners. We took our seats and ordered our drinks. We had our food two Christmas dinners and a slight change to our desert which was fine. My friend then went to the bar at 1:50 to get another drink and was told “you will have to be finished by 2:30 as I need the table for someone else, to be fair I would have refused the drinks and left but my friend is too polite! I wouldn’t mind but there were three other tables for two people that were empty surely she could have set one of these or politely asked us to sit somewhere else. I know this is a busy time but there were only four other tables in, this is not the service or attitude we expected and it will be a long time before we consider coming into this pub again and hence wouldn’t recommend to family or friends.

Went to a party on the 15th December 2023, and it was brilliant! The food made in-house was stunning! Very tasty! Value for money was excellent! The staff were extremely helpful and chatty and very attentive ro everyone's needs. The night was truly awesome and made the birthday boys night! Would highly recommend! 5 stars all the way ✨️ 😍

Went for my Sons Friends Surprise Birthday Party and what a really good night we had. Food was lovely, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was great!

I booked a table on the 15th November for a family of 11.When we arrived was informed that a party was booked for the big room so we had to wait whilst they arranged the tables in the small room which we used to call the tap room.There was no vegetable lasagna or fish available so had to choose Hallomi instead.Had quite a long wait for our meals and the child’s meal for a 5 year old came last.Will never take my family there again.

Had an amazing wedding here this weekend and it was great can not thank Tom a and his amazing staff enough great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Thank you all so much.

Tried the lunch time special of scampi and chips which was very nice and extremely well priced at £7. Quite a lot of choice on the lunch time menu and definitely worth trying.

Had mince and onion pie it was horrible all sloppy and the pie top wasn't cooked didn't think they did pie's like that now and the mince was bland

Attended a wake here in the afternoon. It’s a pleasant venue with a good atmosphere. The buffet food was fresh and plentiful, apart from some very strange scotch eggs that everybody left. However on arrival, there was only one bar person. So 50 people arrive and have to form a long queue to get a drink. They knew what time the wake was booked for and given the volume of bar business this would bring they could have staffed the bar properly. Also the carpet and stone floor was questionably sticky whilst in the queue.

Passed the pub thousands times never called in went three times in a week last week as food was great first time in had nachos really nice as all mixed with chess etc rather than poured on top wife had b l t sand both lovely second time asked for liver had none so had mince and onion pie wife had curry both great again third time called in with grandaughter and wife I had liver wife and grandaughter they had mince and onion pie liver was a bit over cooked but pies delightful will def go again also lunch time your food is buy two get one free

The gourmet food is good, but some of the simpler items have lost out. Previously, we really enjoyed their chip butties. However, this time, the chips were frozen ones that were not properly cooked through, and the bread was a lower quality burger bun. Bring back the home cut and fresh chips with a nice soft bun!

Never been here before, we just called in here on our way to the OEC for Murder Tonight. Luckily, 2 for one all day Wednesday. Four of us had a great meal with enough left over for a take away which we are having for lunch today. Bonus. Sausage and mash, 2 Halloumi fries with chips, one steak pie and chips. All delicious. Total including drinks £34. Fantastic saving in today's cost of living crisis. Highly rated. Atmosphere was a bit noisy, understandable where there are popular meals.

I was so hungry and In an unfamiliar area and came across this place. Ordered curry with chunky chips and sides…. After all I was really hungry. If I had known the portion sizes I would of just ordered a side and that’s all lol. The chunky chips are like a whole jacket potato size and perfectly cooked! The hallomi fries were collosal!!! Everything tasted great. The staff were friendly and relaxed. Proper pub, proper food x

My meal was good but my friends not so good. Chicken very dry and tough.

Sat and waited 15 mins in bar for someone to come. Pressed bell numerous times and no answer. No food order either. Left. Went to top red lion instead which is way better.

We've just been for lunch and had a really lovely time!! All the staff were polite and accommodating! Couldn't have ask for better customer service. The food was delicious! I've got to highly recommend this place called in one time after walking the peaks via home and now its the pub of choice for good food and friendly service, the food is homemade and absolutely delicious 😋 really reasonably priced and if you're like me a walker with a dog you are made so welcome with a bowl of water and biscuits for your canine friend 🐕 👍

Been to the Red lion quite a few times. Been to today for my mother-in-law birthday 10 of us had the Sunday roast. We'll presented by friendly staff couldn't do enough for us. The food was bootifull. No aunt Bessie's here Try the triple selection meat . The beef melted in the mouth . Well done the Red lion ! Well be back.

Well where do I start with this disgraceful food. 4 of us called in today to taste the food its a shame I can't place a picture of the horrible leftovers. The chief that prepared the food should learn how to cook and prepare. I'm not going to go into details as we won't be going back ever again. Avoid this pub food it's disgusting. The staff were very polite at we never complained to the staff as we left but then they never came out for our plates i guess they saw how much we had left.

Great catering for family get together

Find it hard to review this place as its so hit and miss, I've been two or three times in the past few weeks and twice been disappointed with the drinks and state of the place then once really pleased with the service and the drinks. I know the mess isn't the fault of the people working there but it could really do with a deep clean outside some times

Just had the sharing plater which was tasty and plentiful. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Only came for drinks but saw a menu still on the tables. Asked a member of staff if they were still serving and was told no. A few minutes later we were told they actually were serving. We looked at the menu and wanted to order. There were no staff to see in the tap room part of the bar, so we went around to the main bar to order. The menu said it came with wedges and so we ordered chunky chips too. When the order came, the ‘wedges’ were exactly the same as the chunky chips! We were asked if we wanted any sauces, we said no. There was no salt or vinegar on the table, I didn’t expect to ask for these. Again there were no staff to ask, so we went without. The food was very nice, the chunky chips were excellent! We were the only people in this part of the bar. The music played was a jazz kind, the type that would be suited in a piano bar, not a local pub! We have lived in the area for over 20 years and was surprised to see the pub this way, what a shame.

We have eaten here as a family in the past but also had the honour of saying goodbye to a family member and chose the red lion to hold the wake. We were very very pleased with the service, the quality and the professionalism. A sanctuary for our family to come together from all over the country to share our memories over some of the nicest sausage rolls ever tasted! Thank you for making it such an easy day and feeding us so well. Will definitely be back to enjoy the food over better circumstances.

Really disappointed!! Me and my husband found this pub years ago and it was amazing came back today which was a Sunday with our children. The Sunday dinner was all frozen food , and it was flat cold, the roast potatoes still frozen and hard in the middle and the beef was that chewy one of the kids had to spit it out as they couldn't get rid of it! Then on to desserts thinking you can't go wrong with a pudding, well they didn't have what we ordered fair enough we changed it, apple crumble came as an apple pie and my Black Forest gateaux came as a slithering slice of half wet have dry strawberry cake? Would never go back now we know why it was so quiet when we got there.

Friendly and welcoming for away supporters like us BWFC reasonable priced drinks and food served by Friendly staff will be back.

Visited for a gathering following a funeral. It was lovely. A fabulous spread was provided, perfect.

Been for Sunday lunch today and will not be returning the beef was cold nothing was homemade at all Iam absolutely disgusted we left most of the food. It says fluffy roast potatoes they was still frozen the veg was raw still.

The food was lovely however the service left a lot to be desired unfortunately.

We ate there tonight. It was really busy and we had to wait a little longer than usual for our food, as there was a table of 20, there were 8 of us. However, the food was excellent and the staff were brilliant, especially Shelley, who worked extremely hard, while still smiling and giving excellent customer service.

I visited twice in a week, once with a party of 10 for my birthday and once as a party of 7 for a family members birthday. Both times the service was good and the food was really nice. The staff are friendly and yes the chunky chips are incredie. Thank you for 2 lovely meals, we will be back :)

Went for Sunday dinner yesterday and was so disappointed with the food. I ordered roast beef and it came like a thick piece of steak. No one came over to see if our meal was okay. When I went to pay I was asked if we enjoyed our meal and I said I couldn’t even cut the beef with my knife and trying to eat it was like chewing a load of gristle. The reply I was given was the chef said the beef was really tough. There was no apology or not even given a discount.

We pass the red lion every day from wakefield going to the hallamshire hospital. Today we called in. Made to feel welcome. Staff really friendly. Squeezed us in for Saturday tea. Family friendly. Good atmosphere. Generous portions of beautifully cooked food. Hand cut chips to die for. Really good. Will definitely be back.

Had a bad experience the food wasn't good at all the chicken was mega tough an my child wouldn't eat it an when the staff asked if the meals was ok I mentioned this to them an didn't seem interested

A proper pub which does proper food and not just the normal pub microwave meals , whatever you order they are always very good portion sizes and amazing quality, brilliant friendly staff , always very clean inside, a good size carpark, a couple of quiz nights a week, a decent drinks selection which should cater for everyone & best of all it's one of my locals.

Nice friendly pub with an excellent barmaid whose name I wish I'd got. It was our first time in for a meal and she was very attentive and helpful. Food okay made better by the most delicious gravy I've ever had.
