Red Lion in Northumberland

Fantastic Sunday dinner and a dessert. We were viewing a house and popped in with our dig. We were welcomed and given menus straight away. Sunday dinner was lovely and the desserts were fabulous. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

We were lucky to find this lovely pub while on holiday. Nice cosy pub with delicious food - would highly recommend the pie and the sticky toffee pudding. Stayed for the quiz and were made to feel very welcome.

We went to the Red Lion on New Years eve . The menu was really good but only 1 vegetarian option on the actual menu. I myself, stuck to traditional fish and chips. The portions were generous, piping hot and very good quality . The service from the staff was attentive and nothing was too much trouble including offering another vegetarian option. All in all a very good night.

Best steak and ale pie ever! Excellent local beer, well kept and moreish. Nice bar area, although can get a bit crowded in pheasant shooting season😜. Very comfortable dining area with huge old fireplace nicely decorated in seasonal fashion! Friendly and helpful staff/owners. A thoroughly pleasant evening.

Popped in for lunch on our way to Wooler, I had fish & chips which were delicious, whilst my daughter really enjoyed the vegetarian bake. Friendly pub, excellent service, just what we wanted as we travelled around Northumberland.

What a treat to have this wonderful pub on the door step of our holiday cottage. The staff were so helpful, smiling and friendly despite being rushed off their feet and the service was prompt. What a gem we found today when we went to The Red Lion Inn Milfield. Sophie and Chris were so welcoming and lovely with the kids, and the food and drink was amazing!! We sat outside at the back and there were lovely views of the Hills. Inside was really charming too and had an amazing fireplace, but it was a beautiful day so wanted to be outside. The food was all so fresh and tasty and something for everyone and there was an amazing selection of drinks (including a great selection of non alcoholic, vegan and gluten free options). My mum got the salmon and champ mash and I got homemade steak and ale pie, which was freshly made to order and absolutely delicious!! The kids’ meals were good value and tasty too. And the Biscoff cheesecake…sheer wizardry!!! 🧙🏻‍♂️ Definitely one of our new favourite places. If you are in Wooler or passing through (the accommodation looks lovely too there), it is definitely well worth a visit. You’d be mad not to! Looking forward to our next visit already!

We had an excellent experience last Sunday at the Red Lion, Milfield. Our daughter was visiting and wanted to go out for Sunday lunch. She is Dairy intolerant so checking first matters. We knew the Red Lion had changed hands last year and had been meaning to give it a try. Booking was easy, reception was good and food & drinks hit the mark. Great to see a local family run hospitality business meeting local needs, busy and seemingly thriving. Well done to all I hope you go from strength to strength. Thank you 😊

This is our go to place for tasty food in a lovely restaurant with really friendly staff. There were 4 of us. We each had 2 courses with different items from the menu and all were hot and delicious. Sarah the waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. There will be 8 of us next time as we are spreading the word.

Just returned from a delightful meal, all homemade which made a real difference. Mum and Dad had the small fish and chips which were anything but small and fantastic. The steak pie was one of the very best I’ve had, and I’ve had a few! My wife had chicken and tagliatelle which melted in the mouth. All served by welcoming staff in a lovely comfortable setting - what more could you ask for…. 10/10

Sunday lunch use to be so good here, don't know what changed but todays was awful. It looked nice when she brought it out, on closer inspection I knew I was wrong. The meat was awful & so fatty (brought 90% of it home for the dog) the mash potatoes tasted of nothing, like it was mashed without any butter, then loads of veg as a consolation prize... not nice at all. Shame, this use to be our favourite place

Stayed here 26 Nov 2022 arrived at 2.00 pm checked in but unfortunately had a family crisis and had to leave at 3.30 pm well I totally understand we would have to pay for the room we were also charged for the next mornings breakfasts...

Tables need to be pre booked at present. We visited on short notice in the late afternoon and were seated to enjoy Sunday roast. The food was delicious. (The only thing we’d change is for the roast potatoes to be crispy). Lovely food here!

First visit on a Saturday evening with a group of 8. Fantastic service, really good homemade food. Everyone enjoyed it so much we booked before we left for a fee days later. The waitress was so helpful trying to fit us in. Second time around, same experience. Friendly welcome and fantastic food. I had the steak and ale pie both times it was so good! My wife and I stayed at the pub for one night before walking in The Cheviots. A warm welcome, friendly bar and great food meant it was a memorable stay. I had steak and ale pie for dinner which was fantastic. Breakfast was also a triumph.

Had a wonderful dinner. Reserved a table, had great service and delicious food. The whitebait was the best I’ve had, and had a good selection of main courses. Monkfish curry, chicken and haggis and the pork belly were our choices. Dessert was stunning- even ice cream was perfectly displayed and made so appetising.

Recommended to visit here by our hosts at Bridgend Farm at Wooler. Great recommendation. Customer service was second to none. Great choices available including a specials board. I had the special steak which was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. My father had the duck which was well received and my husband had the burger which was homemade and certainly filled a gap. Will return when we go back to the North East.

Interesting menu with lots of gluten free options. Our Sunday roasts were beautifully cooked with a good variety of freshly cooked vegetables and delicious home made Yorkshires. The desserts were to die for, especially the home made brandy snap basket with local ice cream. Barry and John provided excellent, friendly service.

Called in after a huge disappointment at the black bull in etal but the red lion certainly didn't disappoint 4 huge slices of beautiful lamb and beef a variety of vegetables gravy to die for beautiful homemade Yorkshire pudding lovely sticky toffee pudding and local doddington cheese board. Friendly bar man and waiter and waitress and a general all round lovely atmosphere. We would highly recommend and definitely be back

We were staying across the road in a B&B; and the lady who booked us in recommended the Red Lion. We went and invited a couple staying in Wooler as well.

The proprietors have done a wonderful job in turning the Red Lion into a place which appeals to locals and travellers alike. The olde worlde atmosphere is still there and there is a well-used and well-loved feel, including old agricultural trophies, pictures from the wartime airfield and plenty of games for the children. Dominoes on Sunday evenings. Great staff make a great welcome. The food is delicious, combining tradition with more modern twists; the chef knows his stuff. And for those who like ice cream the local Donnington heather honey flavoured version is outstanding.

We stayed a couple of nights in wooler and had our evening meal here both nights ... the food was outstanding, we had steak both nights because it was that nice.. I also had sticky toffee pudding which was out of this world ... can’t wait to got back !

We returned to celebrate a family birthday. The place has a great trade for a rural Northumbrian pub in the depths of winter and had a jolly but not unruly party of Dutch sportsmen among others. I started with a confit duck salad topped by the most perfectly done poached egg which was egg-shaped. For mains I chose a smaller portion which sounds cliched and unexciting but this was outstandingly well cooked. The chips have moved up a notch to sublime/better than Heston. The gammon and egg with pineapple salsa was pub grub at its unpretentious best. The only niggle was the fresh basil in the salsa. I had to pick that out and wished for fresh chilli instead.Pud was a fresh apple and raspberry crumble which managed to ve light and delicious. The fruit was not over-sweetened. The accompanying jug of custard was hot and generous.Service was as always efficient and pleasant.I wish the web site had been updated because I had been hoping for a main of liver followed by olliebollen, one of ny favourite Dutch goodies.However when simple food is cooked so well the business flourishes, appeals to locals and visitors alike and keeps us returning.

Although our business is based in York the team voted unanimously to visit the Red Lion for the annual Xmas do. Happy to oblige as you just know that you will have great accommodation and fantastic food. Had a wonderful meal, really attentive service, great food, lovely surroundings and the sense that we 'were away from it all'. The place was packed out with other parties enjoying their celebrations but the service didn't suffer at all. Lovely food, some very nice Merlot and then a very comfortable overnight stay, topped off with Iain's fantastic breakfast.

Eat here 2 nights on the trot. Great food. Good choice of beers. As soon a we walked in we were made to feel welcome the 2nd night we went in we felt like we were regulars by the bar staff. The price of the food wasn't cheap but was excellent quality and well worth the little extra you pay. They also have a good range of beers to keep me happy.

High standard of beautifully presented food. The roasted hake, cod cheeks in tempura batter were delicious. Lovely tapas, also offers smaller portions. Doddington's ice-cream is just the best ever. Ian should go on Masterchef ......... he would win!

Had dinner here with family on last night of holiday in Northumberland. Cannot fault any of meal at all. Had the lion burger, outstanding! This is our favourite place for a relaxed meal. The chips have got very much better and are now crispy and golden. Could do with some more choice/innovation for the puds - seasonal fruit like gooseberry mousse would be nice. Cooking is totally solid and the place gets a good trade all year round because the owner understands his market extremely well. Sheer deliciousness and good stocks lie behind much of the food here. Loved the mushroom and cheese on sourdough starter. Home produced scampi was delicious and succulent and totally unlike a formulaic freezer to frier place. THAT is the measure of proper cooking. The availability of smaller portions for some dishes is very useful for people who don't want to waddle home stuffed to the point of discomfort or who are watching their weight. We love this place.

After our first meal we ended up choosing from the smaller portion options (main and dessert) just so we could manage a dessert! It does get quite busy though so booking is recommended.
