Wish I could find something positive to say about this place, but apart from the attractive, traditional, flint-stone exterior, there is little to commend it. The barman was friendly enough, but sitting in there on my own one evening was positively depressing. I was there for a couple of hours without seeing another punter apart from a friend-of-the-house local who was propping up the bar and droning on at length. The place is far too bright inside, has no real ambience and is full of kiddies' toys and books, so maybe it would be a good choice for families? Why pay London prices for a pint in a place like this when there are other hostelries in town? The place has also stopped serving food altogether, but whether or not that was just for the season, I don't know. No music as such, just the telly blaring away in one corner to keep the landlord's kid amused. That just about says it all really.

I have drunk in very many licensed premises, (proud to be a Life Member of CAMRA), and The Red Lion in St. Margaret's-at-Cliffe is one of the best I have ever visited. My wife, our two Westies and I are down in East Kent for me to visit the area I grew up in. My wife is from Yorkshire, (I was born in Deal), and she said to me, only yesterday, that Southern people are rude, but, since being here since Friday last, she has found that to be totally incorrect... John & his other half - Jeanie, are salt of the earth, and cannot do enough to make us feel welcome, and we will definitely return next year for our holiday. Thank you The Red Lion

Ive revisited this fantastic establishment on numerous occasions over the last few months. And i can honestly say, with hand on hip, it just keeps getting better and better. Now along with a fine array of ales, bitters, ciders and strategically placed Corgi car models, the Red Lion now boasts its very own pool table.Which i have been informed is proving very popular with both locals and randoms alike.Unfortunately due to my age, all types of pub sports are strictly forbidden. But this does leave me with ample time to idle away many hours standing at the bar supping a delicious cold beverage whilst waxing lyrical to whoever will listen. My only slight niggle is as i am no going slightly deaf, the music could do with a tad more volume, as this can sometimes be a strain to hear.Do not even get me started on the crisps and nuts selection available. My they look good.I am getting married shortly for the eighth time (fingers crossed)And may wee enquire if the service and reception can be held there with a James Bond theme.A touch of class.I love this pub and wish i could move closer, as the twenty five hour round trip does wear me out some.I will return.

The Red Lion St Margaret’s at Cliff offers honest to goodness pub food. We had dinner there on Sat 22nd March 2014. We both chose the steak pie which was delicious, reasonably priced with very generous portions. This is not a ‘food by computer’ chain type pub or indeed a gastro pub. It is what has become a rarity, a friendly local pub serving good food.

How often do you visit a pub or restaurant where you have had a good meal the first time and the second time you come away disappointed ?. WELL this is not the case here as it just gets better and better!!!!. The first visit was great but the second visit was even better !!. Having visited earlier in the year we left ourselves a lot more time to enjoy our food and drinks and it was a real pleasure to have a lazy Saturday pub lunch followed by a stroll to work off the extra pounds. I went for the Beef and ale pie (and went with the Doombar to accompany it) and my wife had the turkey and stuffing pie with a soft drink. As well as great ales the pub should be known as the centre of the Pie World and will be pushing Wigan for the title in the future !!. Stopped into 'The Red Lion' on our way home and found ourselves having a wonderful Sunday lunch and a few relaxing drinks whilst enjoying the sunshine this weekend. It's a good traditional pub with that 'feel good' vibe that most modern places have lost. Although it's a local pub in a small village we were made to feel welcome and were treated very warmly and well by the owners and patrons. The food was delicious and we'll definately go back next time we're in Kent. It's always a treat to enjoy excellent food in a great environment and at a price that is reasonable and real value for money. What made the visit most memorable for me was the dedicated 'James Bond' room which is a very discreet and subtle feature of the pub. Legend has it that Ian Flemming was a regular of the pub and that references to the Red Lion are made in some of his James Bond books and films. Great pub, good food and an enjoyable place to eat, drink and relax.

Food choices were awful. Food was actually awful. What has happened to this 'go to place"? The original atmosphere has been lost. The food itself was very good quality, the chorizo scotch egg starter was very good but the pork belly main was even better. All five of us were very pleased with our choices. The Whitstable bay beer was also very good. Well done to the team there .
