We went for early adhoc dinner on 17 August 2024. Went to order food bearing in mind menus were out on the tables. Informed no food as only taking orders for those who had reserved. Spoke to the bar manager who informed me the same as an issue with their food fryers. Explained only wanted a sharing platter so no frying required. Answer was still no! Pubs a trek out of the city centre and certainly won’t be making that trek again. Not worth the effort bearing in mind all the great pub food and other restaurants Norwich now has on offer.

Wow. Keep this one to yourself. Yes it’s alittle pricy but wow the food and scenery by the river is … wow. One tip! If you order the haddock and chips… have a stretchy waist band and be prepared to be beaten and leave some . Massive portion and extremely tasty. But don’t tell anyone.

Just awful! Food arrived (sharing platter) and noticed hair on the board, sent it back and the next one also had hair buried in the the fish 🤢 Colleague ordered a chicken burger and it was burnt so sent that back and the replacement was even worse - Gordon Ramsey would of had a field day!!! Another colleague had the steak which was OK but not hot as the garlic butter sitting on top of it didn’t melt! The staff really didn’t know how to handle the situation, don’t waste your money on food!!

Sat in the conservatory as we normally do. Radiators have always been on apart from yesterday, you can’t replace three decent size radiators with one electric panel heater just not possible. Didn’t mention it as when we arrived it wasn’t so bad but the weather got worse and it got colder! When we left it felt warmer through the main area but felt a radiator behind a sofa near the front door and wasn’t on either. Anyway food was good apart from Pork belly fat could’ve been rendered down more. It was a bit blubbery. Wife’s nut roast spot on as was the veg and roast potatoes.Obviously we shall go again and hopefully these issues rectified as we don’t want to stop coming. We’ve been probably six or seven times since re opening and it’s normally a 4/5 or 5/5. Good ale selection too.

Compared to how the Red Lion was a couple of years ago it is now a lot cleaner. The staff are very nice but simply not enough of them at busy periods.Food portions are on the small side (perhaps the cook/chef comes from Lilliput?) but the quality is fine.My main observation is the horrendous price of drinks. Cheapest draft lager starts at £5 a pint! The place is nice - but not that good to charge such outrageous prices. The Red Lion is clearly moving away from the 'community pub' concept, it used to be a pub that served food now it's a restaurant that serves drinks.

Amazing meal served from their December menu. I had the chicken supreme but it was a tough choice as there were so many good options. Delicious flavours and I enjoyed every mouthful. We were sat outside (hot and sweaty cyclists) but the food was bright out piping hot and stayed that way (although it barely touched the sides!). Great to see this pub prospering again.

The staff couldn't be more helpful and attentive. The chicken was good and the plate stacked quite well and the Venison dish had plenty of tender meat (undercooked for me so I took it home) but little else. The potato was a thin smear on the plate, there were a few beetroot and blackberries and some dry bits of potato skin (crisps) but I was hungry afterwards. This was £18.The double cooked goats cheese soufflé was rich and tasty, the soup a bit on the small side. The christmas parfait I thought quite interesting and with ice cream quite a good portion, maybe a tad rich but good. They didn't have the sauvignon I wanted but the Chilean one was just Ok enough. I see at the William and Florence, another pub they own that the menu is varied, more on it and looks cheaper. It was freezing cold in there and the radiators were not warm to touch. There is a lovely log wood burner and sitting by that with a cake they have on the counter would be nice. Came home to warm up and have some food, not really what I hoped for.Had it been warm I would have given 3 stars. Some other food combinations might have had a better experience, the chicken was thoroughly enjoyed.

The pub has a reasonable choice of beers and a well thought out menu. There are not too many dishes and they are always excellently prepared . The site by the river offers a number of options to sit outside, in the conservatory on the river side or in the main pub. The staff have always been friendly, helpful and thoughtful. If there was any thing to complain about it is that it has become so successsful that in the summer you really do need to book ahead as its always full booked at meal times. Now winter is here its much easier to just walk in for a drink or meal.

Why five stars and the title of my review you ask yourself? Well let my review tell you a story of excellence verses poor claims of what can only be described as dreadful taste... I was joyfully greeted at the door by a lovely host. Sat at a table with a delightful river view. Ordered drinks on entry which promptly arrived. Small menu on offer which in my view is heavenly as you know it means decent food by a decent chef who isnt peddling a sub standard frozen food menu. Only ordered mains as I was in a hurry but the lamb was cooked to absolute perfection. 100% will be back. No idea why there has been some poor reviews of this wonderful establishment and after my experience I sincerely hope no foul play has been at hand!

Ate at the Red Lion yesterday tea time with my husband. Extremely disappointed with the food we were served.. We both ordered super salads, one with salmon as an extra and the other chicken.. The salad if you can call it a salad came in a bowl with quinoa as the main ingredient, not much salad to speak of, bit of radish and cucumber. And smoked salmon on the top.. Very poorly presented.. As was my husband’s, the chicken, a boned chicken leg was clearly taken off a roast and not chicken breast as we’d imagined it would be.. Again on the top of the salad.. No sauces given, just mayonnaise offered.. We paid £13 for the salad and an additional £4 each for the salmon and chicken.. £17 WHAT A RIP OFF!! The quinoa was so bland I hardly ate any of it but this wasn’t picked up by the waiter on collection of our dishes. I explained our disappointment of the meal and didn’t get much response other than I’m sorry. I wish I had refused to pay for this dish, just the salmon I ate.. We wouldn’t recommend this place and we certainly won’t be going back again

Frankly they were a meal in themselves, but we followed withCod fillets & the Duck duo. Largely completed with the House Sauvignon Blanc. Paige looked after us admirably. Sat outside by river, very pleasant and a sunny day. Chose fish finger burger, tartar sauce, little gem and fries. Dictionary description of fish finger is 'an oblong piece of fish covered in bread crumbs'. We got a deep fried, in fact over fried, hard dark bit of batter. Inside was a small bit of fish. Put between a bun spread with minimal, but good, tartar sauce and 2 small leaves gem lettuce leafs. The fish was not good and the batter was horrible. A good portion of fries. A very starchy meal. I did tell a waitress what we thought of the food. She kept saying it was a fish burger, I said it wasn't a fish FINGER burger.

Always called in here for a snack before our train so were disappointed to see it closed last year. However when we saw it had now reopened we were happy and called in again on the way to the train. Mmmm. Mistake. We asked for the snack menu hoping to get maybe a bowl of chips or a jacket potato or something similar. Noooo. All we could see on the ‘snacks’ were halloumi type sharers or veggie types. Prices from £16 to £20. Not what we wanted at all for a lunchtime snack. Think they have gone a step too far especially as where they are they will get a lot of boaters in who will not want this type of food or price range. Put a few burgers or lasagne, chilli etc on and the people will flock in. Will maybe call for a drink before catching our train but will eat in the city centre where they know what people want. What a pity they’ve changed into this type of place.

My wife and I went to the recently reopened red lion for a Friday lunch. At first sight the menu appears a bit strange , but it turned out to be one of the tastiest meals we’ve had for some time. We missed the starters, which turned out to be a wise thing because our main course was substantial. We are both in our 80s but plucked up the courage and had home made fish finger burgers and skinny chips. The fish was beautifully cooked and the chips delicious and plentiful. For drinks my wife had a double orange gin and tonic and I had two pints from their list of guest ales. The staff, although they were mega busy, were charming and had time to discuss various items on the menu. The service, considering how busy they were was as quick as could be expected. The refurbishment of the whole building is brilliant, the outside terrace down to the river cleverly done. It was a huge and disastrous shame that we pre booked this establishment for x4 for father’s day only to arrive at 6pm, a traditional dinner time - to be told ALL roasts were off the menu. All sold out to the lunch time crew - very bad planning !I do have to add that the manager on shift did really apologise and did offer their mid week menu rather than the scaled back menu. But we decided to have a couple of drinks and leave and eat at home.Disappointing .

Excellent staff, we were fundraising for a great cause. Welcoming and attentive staff who gave us a wonderful welcome and spoke and even donated to our cause. Meant a lot to us to have this support. Excellent service too. Love the renovations and will be back soon for another visit with my husband!

We booked the RLB for a team afternoon out and right from the off, they couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating after some booking hiccups (made by me, I hasten to add!)Nell and the whole team looked after us really well, the drinks flowed all afternoon and the food was tasty and decent value for money too. We’ll 100% be back, thanks so much.

I'm so grateful for the new owners and renovation. This lovely pub delivers on all fronts: lovely food with plenty of offerings for veggies, friendly staff (especially the cheery and attentive manager), great position, fab music and tasteful decor. The Sunday roast today was wonderful. Thank you Red Lion :) it can't be easy operating with so many restrictions but you do it in style and with a smile!

2 visits in 2 weeks should say enough of how good this new place is. Lovely friendly staff, and really nicely done out. Menu good though not too much to pick from out of the usual, though what is on it is really good. Highly recommended though book as if not you’ll be lucky to get a table. Extra touch they did for me as well was onion rings which were not on menu but I love and they did them for me on request, lovely touch

I went to the RLP pub today with a friend for a couple of drinks. The service was exceptional and the staff were fantastic, the food came out and wow: the portion sizes were great. The man on the bar was amazing at recommending drink choices. I will definitely be returning and would recommend this to people I know. Thanks again Red Lion for an excellent experiment

We have eaten at the Red Lion twice since reopening and have been really pleased on both occasions. The menu offers a variety of dishes covering all sizes of appetites - and all the food we had was delicious and beautifully presented. There is a really interesting choice of beers too - everything we tried was well kept and in good condition. The pub is lovely -light and spacious and the busy staff are so friendly and cheerful, even in these difficult times when every single drink has to be ordered and delivered to each table. We are planning our next visit soon.

This pub has been shut for over a year and ha been "gentrified". I visited for a drink on the first day it reopened and it was clearly disorganised. So I waited a couple of weeks and went for lunch. The whole place has been reorganised and in so doing, coupled with Covid restrictions has lost some space. This has been offset by the expansion of the garden area with new benches. The menu has been moved upmarket and with it, the prices. No longer can you get fish and chips which used to be an excellent mainstay.Instead, one of us had a grilled cod fillet and the other a "Super "salad (quinoa, pomegranate seeds etc) to which was added smoked salmon. For dessert, we both chose the Eton Mess which was different from any we had had before. Each of the ingredients was separately laid out on a plate: meringue, strawberries, cream and ice cream; quite extraordinary. The Ghost Ship beer was not available. In its former guise, this was one of my regular "go to" pubs in Norwich, being half way round the Riverside Walk. I think it will take some time before it settles down. The staff are young and enthusiastic but need time to settle in

Found this little gem while in Norwich with my partner. We stopped off initially for drinks but ended up ordering the most delicious food. I had the duck and my partner had the cod followed by some picture perfect desserts. I was served by a lovely lady called Nikki who was very friendly and efficient. Will definitely be returning.

We had not booked. They were busy when we arrived but not packed. Were given a small table in a dark corner although there were plenty of tables apparently vacant.. Took 20 minutes to get a drink. Ordered food then some one else came to take an order. Wine with meal never appeared although I reminded the girl serving us. Said she would bring it but forgot. Food was fine and nicely presented but they need to sort out the service aspect.

We booked for six of us for Sunday lunch at this beautifully renewed location. The atmosphere was good as we walked up, but straight away we were disappointed when led to our 'table' indoors, despite booking outside. I say 'table' as had we been interested in sitting and eating indoors, a sofa and two armchairs and two small round pub tables do not cut it for six people eating a full Sunday lunch; still staff were responsive and after 10 mins or so got us a table outside when we requested one. The food was of mixed quality, the roasts were in part very well put together but the meat was overdone or underdone on various plates, though the other elements were very good, however portion size was small (3 small roast potatoes?) They were however quite highly priced and the drinks to match. All in all a slightly above average meal though. What soured the experience most was wanting to order another round of drinks and desserts and being told we couldn't because the table was needed at 2, so we were quickly rushed out. 1 hour to have drinks and a meal is simply not long enough. I understand the need to serve as many tables as possible but the sense you are on a conveyer belt of hospitality is glaringly obvious when you're given the bill for your drinks and meals before you've even received them..I would wait a while for the management and staff to work out the kinks before visiting, as this could have been a really good experience; after all they've got all the ingredients for success, but just don't seem to have perfected the recipe.

Very expensive charged £8.00 for a glass of wine(NO WONDER THEY DIDN’T INCLUDE WINE ON THE DRINKS PRICE LIST WE WERE GIVEN ON ARRIVAL) Ordered the small plates in other places these are usually in size between a starter and a main, but here they were like tiny starters, not at all filling not even for those with small appetites. For quality and taste the best I can say is passable. Will not be going again, very disappointed.

I've been really excited to try the Red Lion since I heard it was reopening but came away pretty disappointed and wish I'd saved my money. The food was really underwhelming and over priced. It didn't come as described on the menu and in fact came across like they'd run out of food in the kitchen and just gave us what was left. It was barely seasoned and dry. I've been to the owners other pubs and loved the food so was really quite surprised how below standard this was. However the staff were really friendly and the setting was beautiful.

Upset when the Red Lion closed, then new owners bought it but refurb and reopening delayed due to Covid so have been been excitedly awaiting its reopening. Booked for Sunday Lunch, supposed to be a Roast. The menu seem to be doing what they want and not what customers want. Menu is very pretentious and trendy, little choice and ran out of the only proper roast they had. Substituted with Small portion of shredded Brisket over the top of red cabbage to make it look more, 1 carrot, 3 recooked potatoes and small pot of Celeriac. So disappointed with this as a meal. Inside tables for eating are the small Cafe style drinks tables which are too low to eat at. Underwhelmed so will not be returning.

Not the one's we had. Small portions and expensive. The last time we visited nearly 2 years go it was very good however, this is now an example of an establishment trying to claw back money lost during he pandemic. I had the bell pork small plate but was the equivalent of a small starter and price £7. The drinks are very expensive, a glass of Rose at £8. A pity, a pub in a nice location spoilt.

Second time I ordered a beef burger but it looked just like something I could of cooked at home , skinny fries and burgers are not homemade , they seem to worry more about there homemade burger sauce than actually making there own burgers ! Good service though ! The previous owners made there own burgers here so it’s a disappointment they don’t do it .

Been waiting so long to go out and for the Red Lion to reopen. I have eaten pretty much all over the world, appreciate good food and prepared to pay for it. I am more than a home cook and really know how to balance a menu.I have never been more disappointed, the balance of flavours were a nightmare, overseasoned, over sweet and the belly pork was inedible, flabby skin and dry beyond belief. I started with asparagus and a poached egg, that was so salty I wondered what they were masking. And to add insult to injury, if you want a larger or bottled beer it's probably OK, but if you are a beer drinker don't bother, go to a real pub and get your fish and chips on the way home, you at least won't feel short changed.

Promised ourselves we would book the first Sunday lunch once inside dining was allowed. The four of us had Nut Roast, Beef Brisket, and a pleasant surprise - Roast Duck. All really enjoyed our meals and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. We tried a variety of hand pulled beers; all which were lovely. The Brownie dessert had me beaten, but my other half cheerfully polished it off for me. None of your run-of-the-mill food, and all freshly prepared on the premises. Definitely our new favourite place.

My husband took my 85 year old father for a drink and less than a week later my father received a £100 parking ticket for parking in the pubs car park.It was mentioned that there were signs up but you tend not to look at them as you presume they would be there for non patrons only but little did they realise they were supposed to have keyed in a machine(wherever that was!!!) their number plate so they don't get charged this extortionate fee,I have now had to pay the fine online for my father as he was getting really stressed about it and just wanted to pay it to get it out of the way but we will be appealing as luckily my husband took a few photos of my father in the pub so you can clearly see that there were in there and its the principle of they whole thing. What it boils down to is that we were charged £100 for not keying our registration in whilst at the pub!!

While the beer and food, and especially the service, were pleasant enough, I cannot recommend this place as the cowboys to whom they farm out their parking arrangements will do their best to levy a £100 surcharge on your lunch and refreshments. It is a scandal that businesses like the one that operates here are allowed to tout for money-making opportunities in places where ordinary people seek to spend their innocent leisure time. A pure extortion scam. Avoid it.

We had a very different experience here from some of these other reviewers. The landlady was very welcoming to us and our muddy dog. There was a good selection of food on the menu, we all chose something different and were all very happy with what we had - including the dog. We didn’t have an issue with the service at all. There were quite a few locals in so it made for a friendly atmosphere. I can’t comment on the outside as it was raining heavily so obviously we didn’t sit out. We opted for peperoni pizza, the red lion burger (not for the faint hearted!) sausage and mash, halumi salad and goulash made by the Hungarian chef to his family recipe.... Chef we salute you, the food was freshly prepared and cooked to order., it was delicious. The bar staff are lovely. Dogs are warmly welcomed and dog treats are in abundance.
