Red Hut Fish and Chips in South Tyneside

I've used the Red Hut cafe several times and never been disappointed yet. It's completely Covid aware, staff are patient and knowledgeable. I usually order Fish & Chips and they are cooked to order, Always a good size well cooked fish and lovely browned chips. Not much you can say about F & C but they beat renowned Colman's by streets

We called here on New Years day with our 96 year old mother. Staff were very nice. Fish was so fresh and fleshy, chips really nice. Our mother thought they were the nicest she’d had in a long time. We called again today, same service from lovely staff with beautiful fish and chips. They wrap the fish separately from the chips which you can then put in the lid of the container which helps when you’re eating them

We collected cheese pattie and chips ,childs sausage and chips ,fishcake. We asked for the sausage not to be battered and it was cut into small pieces and had batter on ,all the chips had too much vinegar it had soaked into the batter ,chips were swimming in they must have put a full bottle on ,the cheese pattie had all stuck to the top of the box, alot of black bits in the chips and the fish cake was all mushy and runny as pictured not edible what so ever unless you want to be ill . Had to throw everything and go somewhere else waste of time and money wont ever be going back again.

Having heard Red Hut delivered to home we decided to order a takeaway. In the afternoon I went online and placed our order. 2 x fish bites with chips and 1 x burger with everything plus chips. It was easy to do. I gave my name, our address, chose a delivery slot in the evening (15 minute intervals) and paid by bank card. The cost of delivery was only £1.50. I received an email confirming the order. That evening the order arrived on time (in fact 10 minutes early). Given the lockdown distancing rule the order was placed at our doorstep and the delivery man waited in his car for it to be collected. The meal was hot, very filling and nice. Also the process was well managed and very convenient.

Been coming to the red hut since I was a child (when it was in a hut )always great service and the best fish around keep up the fantastic work

Came in a for a fish and chips and also tried the new kebab. Both were really tasty. Would 100% recommend to anyone wanting a chippy in Shields, best I’ve had in a long time.

Tried the pizza and kebab for the 1st time and got to say both were totally lush. All nice and fresh with very little greese. Would 100% recommend and will definitely be going back. My 1st choice place from NOW.

We always go to the red hut on a Sunday and it never disappoints. The food is great, you’ll struggle to find a better chippy, staff are friendly and the service is always fantastic.

Visit every Sunday as they cater for my local football team after the game, having tried other shops previously. The service is always excellent, the food is fresh and delicious and great value. Would highly recommend.

We all had cod and chips sitting inside. Batter on cod was lovely and light. Chips in a basket were done great. Lovely little place. Not many seats but you can take away. Nice staff. Thumbs up from the family.

We called here last Thursday and had the freshest, tastiest fish and chips - they were superb. Visited again today and urgh! It’s hard to believe our meal came from the same establishment. The fish was grey and waaay overcooked, batter burnt, some chips were warm while others were cold and both tasted as though they had been cooked in different oils. Expensive meal to feed seagulls which is where that dire excuse of a meal went. We won’t be going back there again, for sure.

Dropped in as it was quite and not many people around. Prices are to high. On part with that other overpriced fish & chip shop further down the road. Nice and clean, food mediocre and mediocre staff. Has the potential to be a good eatery but the staff need to be more motivated. I don't think we will revisit for a while. There's better value near.

Called for lunch today, made very welcome from walking through the door, settled for OAP Fish and Chips beautifully presented, excellent taste and great value for money, can’t say more than worth a visit any time.

We visit the Red Hut every Friday the staff are excellent very friendly and efficient. The Fish and Chips are lovely and well cooked and at a reasonable price.

Food was amazing, staff very very friendly and couldn’t do more to help! Full family really enjoyed this and we will return

Popped in to The Red Hut chippy while on a day out in South Shields. Sat indoors as it was a tad chilly. The fish and chips were the nicest I've had in a long time; tasty, 'home cooked' chips and beautifully flaky, tasty cod in a light, tasty batter. Came with a drink and a round of bread and butter for £7.70. It was such a good sized portion that my wife and I shared it and both felt like we'd had a good lunch afterwards. (The owner even offered us an extra plate when he saw we were sharing.)

Can not fault, great food and value for money, ideal location, and excellent service would highly recommend!!

Good value for money fish - A nice big piece of cod. Cooked in rapeseed oil which is to be avoided as it has a strong flavour. Chips were cold and chewy. Staff friendly. Personally I would not go again.

Visited 30th December takeaway fish and chips, absolutely rank !! Drove to the beach front and binned!!! Not sure what oil you fry in or if it is in desperate need of changing but the taste was vile !!! Had better from the little beach front stalls. Avoid don’t waste your money !!!!

My daughter from Newcastle has always been a Red Hut fan and we both thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Our meals fish,chips and mushy peas were exceptionally good the portions were generous and well presented The fish was really fresh and tasted fabulous the staff were friendly and efficient and not intrusive leaving us to enjoy our meal in our own time

We’ve been coming to this place for years and have to say this place does the best fish and chips in South Shields! Very close to the seafront too so we always grab a bag before a stroll.

I run a local football team and recently we needed to make a bulk order to feed 15 hungry lads. This obviously put pressure on staff but they always very friendly and helpful. The food has gone down a storm with the lads. High quality food at a very reasonable price..... it so popular with the lads we now make a bulk order after every game!

The best fish and chips we have had for a long time. The chips were cooked to perfection and the batter on the fish was thin and crisp. Staff could not have been friendlier. The new owner is doing a superb job and will be winning awards in the near future.

Worst fish & chips we've ever had! The majority of them were given to the gulls on the seafront....sorry gulls. The batter was thick, soft & mushy, the chip were hard & dry & the smell of what they were cooked in wasn't good either...total waste of £13. I would not recommend at all!

For well-cooked, inexpensive, friendly service you can't beat the fish and chips served here. The portions are very large, the service is friendly and the location is excellent. The food is cooked fresh and not kept in a warm rack. Recommended.

Not sure what they fry thier fish and chips in but yuck , it wasnt nice at all. very greecy and had an almost lemon wierd taste to it. chips were also very overdone. Wont return

Called in at lunchtime on our way to the park. Just bought a couple of bags of chips to eat in the park. They were the most disgusting things I've had to eat in years. Mushy and greasy , I'm sure the fat was well overdue changing. Looking at the other reviews I think it must depend on who is cooking that day. Don't chance it, go to Smiths next door but one. I wondered why they had a queue but the Red Hut didn't. I should have guessed.

Beautiful fish n chips and the chunky chips were amazing, lovely and brown just like my mam used to make them.

At last. Someone who knows how to cook chips. They are actually brown which is how chips should be cooked instead of looking anaemic. Tasted delicious too. Well done Red Hut

We live in Shields but have never visited the Red Hut as there are several nearer fish and chip cafes nearby. However, after doing our shopping in the town centre, we were nearer the Red Hut so expected the same standard meal as everywhere else along the seafront. Never again! Poor service, waited twenty minutes and noticed nobody else were getting their meals. When one meal did come out fir another customer, the chips were well overdone, deep brown, and the fish also dark brown. When our meal came, it was slightly better but nothing like the crisp golden brown served at other cafes nearby. Salad was going off, also.Plates of food were going back half eater and nobody looked very happy with their meals. Cleanliness poor with chips and other food on the floor and entrance very dirty. Very unpleasant experience and one to be avoided.

One of the best and oldest chippies in South Shields , quick and friendly service . Tasty fresh cod in a beautiful fluffy batter even on busy days it is well worth the wait .

Terrible stood and waited till staff seated us waited 15-20 minutes for staff to come take our order waited a further 15-20 minutes saw,staff serve people who came in after us not one member of staff came over to apologise for the wait not even fetch our drinks over whilst waiting so decided to walk out terrible

Staff friendly , fish not overly battered a good sign .tea cups could be bigger, I do prefer a mug but that's my like. Two slices of bread would be nice. A sugar bowl or more packets please. The sauces were given with the meal.

If you're looking for good fish and chips this is the place to go - better than Colman's in my opinion! The staff are lovely and friendly, everything is cooked to order so fresh as can be, and portions are very generous. Get a loyalty card if you're visiting - buy fish and chips 9 times and get your 10th free!! Highly recommended

Visited the red hut on a Sunday lunch time. Staff great and polite. Fish and chips cooked to perfection and very tasty.

The place does not look much from the outside, and indeed, is rather basic inside, but offers some of the best fish and chips we have ever had in England. Hardly sophisticated, but does not pretend to be. Ideal for stoking up on decent food when hungry.

Called in saturday for our tea ordered fish and chips and fishcake and chips. The fish and fishcake are cooked fresh while you wait watched the fish go in the fryer went to the toilet and it was cooked when i returned rather quick i thought but it did look nice paid £12.05 for this plus 2 bottles of coke not a bad price i thought ....... all i can now say is i will never return to buy my tea again .... i have been goint here for years and never had any compliants but what i had just paid for was disgusting the fish was raw the fishcake more potatoe than anything else the chips were cold and like rubber and i can only say i must of put water on them not vinagar it had no taste at all neadless to say it all went in the bin and i will never return

Fue un día tranquilo cuando fui. Mi pescado estaba preparado a pedido como consecuencia y era precioso. Buenas raciones de tamaño medio. Sabroso. Medio ambiente cocina parecía limpio como una patena. El menú no aparece esté lleno. No puedo decir si ofrecen tipos menos populares de peces pero para buen pescado viejo y patatas fritas fue encantador.

5 de nosotros para una visita el día 4 debido a que el sol brillaba. Hijo de 17 años dijo que el pescado y las patatas fritas eran irreales. mi marido nos cowboy especial y todo estaba bien, aparte de la hamburguesa era un poco bajo, pero el curry preparado era increíble. 2 nietos tenía comida nuggets de pollo y la señora era bastante felices el resto de nietas en una bandeja, así que ella podría terminar de comerlo en su cochecito. Hicieron adecuado patatas fritas no congeladas y el bateador era encantadora y luz

Después de tomar un escucha, decidimos probar la nueva dirección y no permitir una estrella brillante de los peces y su duda en el chip.

Nada supera el Original Red Hut. Este lugar ha ido a peor. No sé qué marca de aceite la nueva gestión está utilizando, pero no es agradable. Deja un regusto desagradable. ¿Por qué cambiar una fórmula ganadora? Y la salsa curry no es lo mismo que decir que hace un año. No vamos a volver.

Read a couple of negative reviews about this chippy so we thought we find out for ourselves, we could not fault this chippy had fish and chips and the kids had a kids meal.Both were excellent and great value for money and we even sat in for our meal in the attached seating area. Definitely will be returning. Well done The red hut.✅✅✅✅✅

What's not to love about a large piece of cod encased in thin crispy batter and served with fresh cut chips, friendly staff and spotless restaurant, all at a very reasonable price? I rounded out my meal with the mushy peas (delicious), a pot of tea and some bread and butter to make a chip butts. Visiting the UK and I always need to get my fix of fish and chips a few times during the trip. The Red Hut really stands out above the rest. I'll definitely be back.

Amazing fish and chips! Cooked the best way possible in beef dripping!! Best taste ever, you can still taste it an hour later. The staff are really friendly and asked us if we wanted more drinks on a regular basis 5 star restaurant.

This is old fashioned fish and chips at its best, no frill but clean and tasty.Everything is cooked to order so a little waiting but fresh and tasty.

Not sure where an earlier reviewer has been but it certainly was not here.I noticed it was in the Gazette short list for chippy of the year so had it in mind to give it a try, and so we did at the weekend, the place was busy when we attended but we were given a warm welcome & served quickly even though fish being fried to order, good sized portions that were very tasty the kids in particular loved the curry sauce, reasonable priced with a clean & tidy seating area we will be back again.

How is this place open? It's really that bad. Next door and a hundred yards up the road are two excellent fish and chip shops. This place is dirty, the food is awful and the staff are useless. How is it still there?

Very Good Place to Eat i would suggest it to all my contacts and friends this is because i loved the food service and how much i had to pay, there was about only one problem with the food, this problem is that the sausages were a bit horrible, in my opinion to make this better i think you should have multiple different type of sausages for example cumberland or richmond sausages also i think the customers should have the choice to have batter on the sausages. me and my family went to THE RED HUT FISH&CHIPS on the sunday the 31st of july 2016 when we went to the ub40 concert but even with all the customers they had they still tried there best to get everyone served within ten minutes of them asking our orders.

Clean, tidy and meal cooked when ordered. Good value for money although not a great deal of choice in menu. Meal piping hot, looked good and tasted great.

Tried The Red Hut when on holiday and found it very clean and the meal was cooked to order and only waited a short while to be served, There menu contained everything you could wish for and very reasonably priced. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The portions were very large and good value for your money.

We paid the going price of £6.00 each for fish and chips. My gripe is that the portion was very small. For £6.00 I would at least expect a decent serving.The food was average but I could not enjoy it as I had the distinct feeling that we had been done.Will not be going back when there are better fish and chip shops in the area.

First time here and id happily go back, we had fish chips and mushy peas. Id choose this restaurant over Colmans down the road any day. They even use beef dripping instead of oil tastes like the chippy from beamish. A friend recommended we go as it is under new management, very clean and lots of friendly staff who will go out of their way to help.

Noticed it was under new ownership so thought we would give it a try, the place was very clean with new table & chairs in the cafe area, the fish was fried to order and our meals arrived quickly and i must say was one of the best fish & chips we have had definitely the best on Ocean Road, plenty of it and reasonably prices will definitely return.

Went here for fish and chips. Service terrible plus had no hair net on the girls long hair. Food was greasy and they clean toilets as well. Should have a cleaner for that. Needs closing down and given one star for trying. Yak. Never go here again.

Red hut has a well deserved very good reputation but I guess anyone can have a bad day. We went at 6.10pm on a cold, wet Tuesday in March. It was empty and the waitress told us it had been very quiet all day.The portions were very big and the fish would have been lovely. However, the fat I suspect was not hot enough so it was very greasy. Presumably this is because it had been so quiet.The situation became almost comical in a black way, when the staff, who were cleaning up for an early finish at 7pm began discussing the toilets. Are the toilets dirty? Yes. I'll clean them when I finish hereNot what you want to hear when you're eating.A strong smell of pine disinfectant soon spread through the place. Not sure if it was floor or toilet cleaner but really - we were still eating.The waitress offered to pack what we left but no way did I want to finish that later. Couldn't wait to get out.Like I said a great pity as its a bit of a legend in the North East.

The Red Hut has been closed down or the business has been sold for a number of months now. The Original Red Hut was simply the best, however in recent years, since being taken over, it went downhill, although you could still get a decent fish and chips on a good day

yes, I also remember the legendary 'Red Hut', a tiny beach shed , situated on the beach/ the sands ... on the little beach, South Shield's very own beach ..salty air !! send hungry appetites' ...what a treat ! .. serving the best quality fish and chips !!

We were feeling a bit peckish on our visit to shields and we fancied fish & chips so thought we would give the red hut a go.We have been here before in the past & always had a good meal & so it was on this occasion in Monday 26/oct/2015 . We called in at about 2.30pm so we were the only customers .we had the oap,s deal I think it was £3.75each a good deal I think.as a previous review stated the chips are half cooked & just put back in the hot oil to finish off which is ok.we could not fault the meal or the price.it was £8.50 for 2 fish & chips mushy peas bread & butter & 2 mugs of tea very nice.also the owner was very nice to talk to we had a nice chat while their.i know that colmans a few doors away has a better reputation but you can't fault the red hut for the price & quality.keep it up & we will be back to visit soon all the best from michael & Jeanette nellist.penshaw.

Popped in for a couple of bags of chips. The place was empty and so we were served very quickly by a pleasant chap who appeared to be the owner.As is often the norm in food shops the chips were half cooked and a quick burst in the deep fryer produced a hot and fresh packet. They were ok and much better than places where the chips are fully cooked and left on the warm shelf to go soggy.Portions are said to be regular and large and we were surprised to be charged more than we expected. When querying this we were informed we had been served large portions. We would have expected to have been served regular portions unless we said otherwise. It would have been nice to have been asked.

Sadly the Red Hut has rapidly gone downhill since the previous owners retired. Unfortunately the fish and chips are at best average. The chips were underdone and hard. The fish although cooked to order was greasy and tasted less than fresh.The whole place needs some tlc and a drastic overhaul of it cooking procedures if it’s to survive in a competitive market and until that happens the Wanderer Clan will not be returning.

Bought some chips from the Red Hut during a recent spur of the moment decision to have a trip out to South Shields. They were absolutely awful! I remember the fish and chips from the original Red Hut when it used to be on the seafront and they were always delicious. However, we definitely will not be going back any more to their new location on Ocean Road. The chips had clearly been refried and reheated, and were loaded with grease. Had to throw them away as they were disgusting.

I think the redhut is under new management and has been for the past several years? It certainly has changed & the quality of the food isn't the same. As a teenager i remember when the business used to trade out the "Red wooden hut" down the Pier Parade along the sea front. The food was delicious, portions were plentiful..and the queue of people would go on forever, it was the only hut down there where the business would thrive & it was worth waiting in the queue for freshly cooked fish & chips. Definitely not the same.

Arrived at the red hut today to give mum a treat we were served burnt greasy fish and chips they are supposed to be cooked to order and usally they are beautiful but today they were digusting the standards have certainly dropped we defiantly won't be back so disappointed

Visited shields surprised how quiet. But the final match of the season was on, that must have been reason. Went to the Red Hut still same top quality fish and double fried chips. Much better than London can't wait to come back.

Fantastic option food I orderd fish and chips and the portion sizes where very generous. The chips are part fried, fluffy and white on the inside, golden and crispy on the outside very happy with the service and will certainly be going back

on saturday daytime me and my fiance ordered fish and chips(with curry) and sausage,chips, curry for me, the curry sauce was that bad that i left 3/4 of my lunch , i only ate the chips that didnt have curry on , it was very thick , as in i could actually feel the powder that was put in it, it needed water added to it, when it came to the table it had a skin on top as if it was just sat there before served, the girl with blonde hair looked very sweaty and everything she done wrong whilst taking our order the got angry with herself and swore, i normally love this place but saturday wasnt good at all , we paid £13, and for what???? we ended up taking our plates to the counter and leaving so that she could see how much was left. not to mention her constantly starring at us and not even a slightest smile on her face, she also made a customer at the counter take 2 fish and chips and cutlery over to an elderly couple which is very un hygienic as the cutlery had no napkins, wont be coming back in a hurry. the only thing that kept us happy was the little boy that was sitting the table across from us with his dad, he was a joker. overall NOT IMPRESSED.

During a one night stopover in South Shields, my wife I and I made the mistake of going for convenience rather than quality. Having ordered our sit-in fish and chips we had expected to wait a few minutes as there was but a single man working who also had the counter customers to serve. After almost 20 minutes at the least grotty table, I was within the last few seconds on my count-down to our walk-out when the plates were put in front of us. Cutlery in a bundle of four items. No napkins visible. Condiments in soiled containers had to be self-acquired from other tables. Two mugs of tea, prepared by the same man, were dumped one-handed on the table and had too much milk and not enough sugar. We were not given the option of bread. The chips were good but the oil in which the fish had been fried was well past its best and the batter was liberally peppered with little pieces of black matter which appeared to be burnt fragments of considerable vintage. Removal of the batter revealed acceptably palatable fish. The real surprise was the amount of folk attending the counter because at least some of them must have have stuff from here before! To rub salt in our wound we discovered a much more inviting chippy a few doors nearer the sea. It's called Colmans and it just HAS to be better than this

The Red Hut has been around the block during its two (that I know of) incarnations. It isn't the best chippie in the Borough, but I certainly wasn't disappointed. Portion sizes are good and the fish is of excellent quality. My only complaint was that the chips were a little on the dry side, but not enough to whine about. They were still perfectly edible and had a really robust taste.The Red Hut is a local institution, and still doing well.

Situé dans un quartier britannique typique, non loin du fort romain d'Arbeia dont je vous conseille la visite, ce petit "restaurant" ne paie pas de mine de prime abord. Cherchant un endroit où me sustenter avec mes amis après une visite, j'apperçois à travers la vitrine un groupe de dames d'un certain âge en train de manger et de rigoler le tout avec visiblement beucoup de bonheur. Je me dis, "c'est un gage de qualité !!". Illico presto, nous rentrons. L'accueil est très sympathique et la clientèle l'est tout autant. Avant de commander, un groupe de militaire rentre, commande et s'en va l'air ravi. C'est visiblement une bonne adresse ! Le fish & chips commandé, nous attendons et lorsqu'il arrive, il est énorme et semble succulent. Et bien, c'est le cas et le tout pour une somme modique ! C'est à mon sens une adresse incontournable pour qui veut goûter un fish & chips digne de ce nom. Juste pour information, ils ne prennent pas la carte bleue, mais çà, ce n'est qu'un détail. Bon appétit si vous passez par là.

The cod was delicious and the crisps were crispy, the proprietor very friendly and helpful, providing tips on places to see as well.

Went back to south shields after a long time away from the place. The place has changed a lot was sad to see all though old places gone. Was pleased to find this place had relocated although it may just be with being a bit nostalgic and remembering the old red hut and the wait and getting what seemed the biggest portions of fish and chips. Nice sea side fish and chip shop just missed the old place. Nice memories though and thanks for bringing them back .

South Shields has a plethora of Fish and Chip shops and yet this is the one i always come back to. Forget Colman's and Smith's the food in here is the best on Ocean Road. Beautiful fresh cod fried in light crispy batter, wholesome chips that you just want to eat until you burst, healthy portions too. Never disappointed.

Always a good quality of food served here. Colman's along the road gets all of the awards and publicity, but there's very little you can fault the Red Hut with. Although they're not in a red hut. But that's probably better.

Popped through to Shields on a family trip. We live in Canada and miss our traditional Fish n Chips, our family live close by and we decided to eat here. The food was great and we weren't disappointed. Good sized portions and a friendly atmosphere , we will head back to Canada satisfied having ticked Fish n Chips of our list.

I went to the red hut after the great north run. I purchased fish and chips at a very reasonable price. The food was unbelievable. Service was top quality and all the staff were polite and very helpful. I will defiantly be going back

When we first entered we were welcomed by an older gentleman who told us to take a seat. We paid under five pounds for two kids meals and drinks which is very cheap and reasonable. The chips are nice, chicken nuggets are ok. The only criticism I can give is that some of the high chairs weren't clean. However with the pleasant staff we would definitely come back.
