Lovely restaurant, great staff and great food. Highly recommended.

This restaurant was next door to our hotel and was recommended by the hotel concierge. The food was excellent, the servings appropriate and the service better than average. Would eat there again.

I’ve been over the years and it’s been ok and can reflect food that I can get in China. I visited for lunch on 23rd October having just popped into the Chinese supermarket next door for provisions and the food was shockingly poor. The ingredients didn’t feel fresh and the quality was all together quite unpalatable. I can make it far better myself.

Really delicious silky tofu in chilli sauce. Nice discreet staff. Slightly underwhelming décor. Wine very reasonable prices

Thursday 9th Oct 2024 6 of us enjoyed a great meal & drinks with great service. Food was really good, atmosphere great and pleasant staff Good menu and drinks selection

We went there for an early dinner at 16:30, not many people so the service was quick and great. Foods are ok and prices are reasonable. Only with many mosquitoes which was quite annoying while you are eating.

Went there after 15 years and still the food is top

Very nice restaurant. Can't not go wrong with chinese. Had a take away but while Waiting I can tell it a very busy restaurant and the place was buzzing. Will definitely dine in next time when i visit.

Came here all the time as a child and still come back whenever I get the chance as it is to this day my favourite restaurant ever and the best Chinese food I've had outside of china. Ate here again a few days ago and our food arrived very quickly and was even better than I remembered. This place never disappoints. - best dumplings I've ever had - soft fried noodles with bean sprouts also recommended - jade fried rice with prawn is excellent - shredded potato is really good and flavourful - braised aubergine was amazing

After reading the reviews wasn’t too sure to go, but went to see for myself. The food was lovely and freshly prepared. The staff was friendly. Would definitely recommend it

Poor service , very poor , waiters either don’t listen or understand English … went a few years ago and now I see the difference , poor food helpings , rushed cooking and undercooked , you have to sit on dirty table cloth s despite asking for clean , these are only cheap paper table covers so it should have been done , sizzler didn’t sizzle and the waiter knew this but of course did nothing … all in all a bad experience and won’t be going again , there are better in York .

The food was exceptional, with the shrimp with egg yolk standing out as a delicious highlight. The crispy Chinese pancake was also a favorite, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The traditional decor added a charming and nostalgic touch that is rare to find these days. I will definitely be returning for another visit!

Hi I visited the restaurant on 3/8/24 with my family, I would NOT like to recommend this place for anyone. I dnt know how they get 4. 3 rating. Reasons 1) food quantity was fine but the main courses taste was not like Chinese. And appearance was not pleasant. 2) 5 or 6 staff was there no one smile on us, everyone looks like unhappy, sad. Felt like pushed by some one to work. 3) Toilets was in very poor cleanliness .

🇬🇧❤️ This restaurant is incredibly delicious. I ate there countless times when I was in York, and I still crave it today. If I could, I’d head back to York just to dine there again!

Didn’t visit we had a takeaway delivered. Ordered GongBao Diced Chicken with Peanuts & Dried Chilli. It was absolutely disgusting. The so called ‘Chicken’ was tiny pieces of meat which were pink/brown coloured and hard and were maybe pork but it indescribable. Couldn’t eat it it was so bad!!!

The food was nice but I got my meal and my wife’s meal didn’t come out till 5 minutes later staff not very attentive even though it wasn’t busy service was poor not just us but other tables waiting overall disappointing even though we’ve been before and everything was fine don’t think we will be returning

My husband got his meal mine came 5 minutes later. Staff not attentive my husband had finished his drink & no one came & asked if he wanted another drink. We won’t be going back. They didn’t ask our food was ok. The staff looked that didn’t want to be there

The food was really good but the hygiene of the toilets I was simply shocked, I have never seen such a dirty toilet in a restaurant, I was even disgusted to wash my hands so as not to touch that tap🤢

I can not comment on the food as I have never received it! The service is horrible! Do not order from here unless you have to whole day to wait for your food...

The food was very well prepared and delicious. We had the two-person special, and it was the best Chinese food we've had in years.

Amazing! Service and food were superb, portions are generous and the menu is vast with a fantastic selection of authentic dishes. One of our party ordered the seabass and a whole fish was served! That's very generous and it was absolutely delicious. Good value for money and arguably the best chinese restaurant I have ever eaten. Can't wait to book again when we come back next year! Absolutely lovely restaurant, first visit. We ordered banquet for 3 which was a good choice as it meant we got to taste different dishes rather than sticking to same old . The dishes were beautiful, tasty, plentiful. Ooh I can still taste the lovely ribs and prawn toast. Plenty of different choice on menu 😋. Service was excellent. The only thing I would say is a little forwarning in advance for the sizzling skillet brought to to table. And we only knew this because of the couple next table had got the dish before us , the skillet spattered oil all over the table cloth 🙄 and would have gone over our clothes like the other couple if we hadnt have been prepared by holding the table cloth up!. Overall a lovely evening and would definitely return

Quick, speedy food to the table. Tasty and hot. We love this place as the food does not disappoint. Cumin mutton and the chilli oil dishes are glorious.

Large restaurant just off the main centre. It seems quite dated decor wise, dark and dim which paper table clothes (which are totally practical) which for me let it down from 5* (everything I mentioned, not just the table cloths). Food was spot on. We opted for one of the banquet menus which was a choice of soup, sharing platter or duck and 2x curry and a veg side and rice. There was so much food. It was all really delicious and so fresh. Good drinks selection too. We didn’t book and got a seat on a Saturday eve no problem. Staff were all really friendly and attentive. We got lovely, fresh, tasty food which was excellent value-what’s not to like??

The Food was excellent but the service was lacking. Had a lovely evening with my son - had starter banquet and 2 mains, however no one came to take a drinks order and we ordered with our meal after 10 mins sat there. No one checked on us despite us leaving g a full plate of noodles ( only left because we were full). Our drinks sat empty for the last 30 mins of our meal without any one asking if we wanted anything. It wasn’t overly busy staff were stood around. I eventually had to call someone over to ask for our bill. I would have bought more drinks but with that lack of attention left to go elsewhere. I must repeat the food was fantastic- I couldn’t fault the food

Red Chilli's exceeded my expectations! The food was absolutely delicious, with each dish bursting with authentic flavours. The service was prompt and friendly, and the ambience was cosy. Whether you're a fan of classic Chinese cuisine or looking to try something new, Red Chillies is a must-visit. I can't wait to return!

The French beans with minced pork is their best dish in my opinion

Wanted to write a review as we were really disappointed at the bad reviews! We went last night and it was lovely, food was great, service was great and the atmosphere was amazing :)

Except that the boiled fish I ordered was average, the dumplings and fish-flavored shredded pork were both good. The Chinese-speaking male waiter's service is also very average, and even makes people feel uncomfortable, but the foreign waiter has a good attitude ~

This place was amazing! Highlight of food for me and my boyfriend in York!!! We had the salt and pepper chicken wings for a starter, crispy shredded beef in Cantonese sauce and beef mince and lettuce rice. Bloody gorgeous!!! Portions was massive. Service was fast and efficient. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal! When we come back to York we will definitely be coming back here! 100/10!

I went to this restaurant and I highly would not recommend this restaurant because it was highly expensive and the next day I got food poisoning from here and when I complained to the company they said they couldn’t find my order and if I wanted anything done regarding compensation I had to provide the receipt which I left on table with payment but keep asking me for it when I have told them numerous times by email also they asked me for a record of medical I recieved with was an insult and a joke, so I would clearly state to Amy one to stay clear of this restaurant as it should be condemned

I pick this restaurant after reading other reviews. We had a fabulous meal. Would definitely recommend this place. I recommend booking in advance.

Firstly I would advise you to pre booked. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent couldn't fault any of the courses. I would definitely recommend this place.

Having recently started learning standard Chinese and taking MOOCS in Chinese history, I thought that it would be good to celebrate the start of the Chinese year of the dragon with a Chinese meal! The daughter recommended the Red Chilli, around the corner from the railway station, next door to its own supermarket and we were very glad she did. The food had the quality of good, fresh home cooking and came with lavish and tasty sauces. The dark interior was relaxing as was the service that allowed us plenty of time to savour the feast of dishes including both garlic coated bok choi and broccoli, the vegetables being again worthy of home cooking. My only regret was the food was too plentiful for me to have a dessert. Maybe next time I will start with that! A rare combination of welcoming with good food.

This is a review for the other branch in York, my partner and I had such a bad case of food poisoning that we had to call 111 last night. Terrible, we still haven't recovered. Avoid at all cost.

Excellent restaurant on all counts! We ordered sweet and sour chicken and chicken curry both with egg-fried rice. We also had samosas as a starter. Ambience and customer service were great. Would thoroughly recommend!

My favorite Kung Pao Chicken was mediocre. The flavor of this dish was not rich enough and too spicy. Maybe it was due to the Indian chili peppers. The three flavors of sweet, sour and numb were overwhelmed by the spiciness.

Visited here Sunday 5 feb, ordered salt and pepper ribs, peking duck with jasmine rice. Also chicken chow mein, chicken and vegetables doublings and finally sweet and sour king prawns. Food was piping hot, the prawn were extremely nice and big. Salt and pepper ribs very very salty but still very tasty. Staff very helpful and service was exceptional efficient considering there was a big party of people in for a birthday. Enjoyed the food and would definitely go back to try other dishes.

Really lovely food, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. As with all English restaurants it was less spicy than you would expect of the authentic version, but I suppose they have to cater to local tastes. There were a number of groups of Chinese people eating there, which is always a good sign with a Chinese restaurant.

Best Chinese food I've ever had, I come back to this restaurant very regularly. Staff are lovely, lots of menu choice. The tables are always presented nicely, however the toilets are not the cleanest.

Amazing authentic food in the heart of York. I've eaten here a few times and never been disappointed. The portions are generous and tasty, and the service excellent. The setting is really unique, with a strong contemporary style mixed with traditional Chinese culture.

Went for Dinner whilst on holiday .place was lovely with great choice of traditional chineese dishes .service was quick and food well presented .overall value very reasonable based on location Will visit again when back in the area.

Booked for group of friends and came with a recommendation but sadly disappointing to say the least. In fact more of a disaster really and something that no one in the group had ever experienced. Arrived and pointed to a table in the distance, not shown to the table! Then waited 30 minutes yep some in the group were getting annoyed and quite rightly. Sadly had to ask for some sort of service and eventually came but without any pleasantries. There was two young rude disruptive groups in the restaurant taking up everybody's time which is not surprising as being legless drunk and being sick on the table is not a good. Appeared to lack management control and total disregard for other customers and although the food was just okay service was poor. All toilets were shut completely for a time and were disgusting. Maybe just a bad night but was not overly busy. We paid before meal finished as keen to get out and will not return.

Takeaway. Best chinese food ever - but nearly double the price of others - but I'd deffo use it again

Beautiful. Arguably the best Chinese meal I have ever eaten in my life. We visited every night of our stay in York simply due to how large the menu is, and how fantastic the food was. Genuinely a must visit

We had the £25 a head banquet which was lazy of us but we were tired after travelling from Greece It was super. Great portions and wonderfully tasty Rather wonderful decorations in the restaurant and perfect for very large parties

The best Chinese food I have ever had. I originally visited the Leeds branch that has since closed. When I found that there was one in York, I just had to go. It was so good that I went both evenings of my stay. The chicken wings were so flavourful and perfectly cooked. The chow mein was fantastic, the meat was soft and the sauce was delicious. My partner and I are very big fans of this cuisine and both agree that it was the best we have ever had.

Spent Friday afternoon in York,did some shopping and had a few drinks. Got the munchies around tea time and headed over the river to Red Chilli. Restaurant was quiet and we ordered the set banquet for 2 priced at £25pp. Everything was super tasty and freshly cooked. The highlight was the sharing platter of starters accompanied with 3 separate dipping sauces. Well worth a visit!!!

We visited here again for the first time in a number of years and it did not disappoint! The staff were kind, helpful and welcoming and the food was incredible. Such a great place with many memories and just get better with ever visit!

I have dined here a lot and the food never disappoints, it's one of the best Asian restaurants I've been to.

有一说一，服务态度挺好，上菜速度非常快。 刚点完菜，喝着水呢，冷盘口水鸡就从后厨被端了上来。结果鸡肉冻得梆梆硬，吃雪糕的口感，咬不动。垫底的黄瓜块也冻蔫了。反映了情况，店家给换了红油抄手。这份抄手是热腾腾的，但直到我们快吃完才上桌。 第二快的菜是水煮牛肉。刚上桌，第一筷子捞下去，肉是热的，但垫底的豆芽是温、近乎凉的，而且豆芽也是蔫的。结账的时候我问店家是不是半下午我来的不巧，厨房休息。店家说是新鲜做的，说豆芽是焯水之后过冷河，使口感更脆。。 还点了一份lunch special，有道炸牛肉条，像是被炸过不止一次，几乎被炸空了。。。 总之，我问完了我的问题，店家道别的时候态度很好的说拜拜。我也道谢离开了。

On a mini break with friends we passed this restaurant earlier in the day and decided to give a go later in the evening. Rocking up around 7.30, not having prebooked, they were very busy, asked to wait about 5 mins and then shown to our table. Lovely atmosphere, we ordered our food and drinks, they took on board one of our party had a severe fish allergy and checked our choices. Food was delicious, portions about right. We knew it was going to be delicious when we realised that 90% of the other clientele were Chinese .....if they eat there then.....Thoroughly relaxing, would recommend

We are regular customers and go as often as once a week we really never had a bad meal. We love the steamed seabass in soyasauce and sesame oil and all tofu dishes. The spicy hot pots are delicious if you like szechuan pepper. The manager knows us and most of the staff and they always make us welcome. We look forward to our next meal at the Red Chilli 👍

One of best Chinese restaurants in the North. Authentic, fresh and big portions at a reasonable price. My family and I had a very good dinner in an upmarket environment.

Lovely food but service let them down and also it’s a large restaurant but always sat other couples etc right next to each other so very compact not much privacy when they could have used other places in the restaurant.

As close to authentic szechuan cuisine as I've had so far in England, very good ma po tofu.

Fantastic food, lots of choice, menu has pictures of every dish which was helpful. Big portions, reasonable drinks menu, loved the pina colada!! Good decor & relaxed atmosphere. It is big open plan restaurant but seating is such to make it seem pleasantly warm & welcoming. Would definitely recommend & when in York again we will return.
