From the minute we walked in there’s a gasp at how quirky this place is... awesome selection of drinks on offer, the lads behind the bar recommended drinks after asking the sort of things we liked... and they nailed it! Absolutely love this place..

Was told by a few ppl to visit here , finally got to it, so disappointed , it was dirty, flies all over bar and fruit at bar area, it stunk of sick and we all left our drinks ! Tasted awful !

You have to go through the Evil Eye gin shop to get to the bar.

Very quirky and different bar hidden behind a Gin shop. Impressive collection of liquors and spirits behind the bar with a decor resembling a grunge/rocky vibe.

Spent the whole weekend here in York and ended up spending all Sunday propped up at the bar,all the staff were great helping us choose from the extensive menu,great vibe,great service,great price,great time!!! Well done evil eye team 👍

Visited this venue on a night out. First thing that stands out is the charmingly esoteric decor. The cocktail menu is vast and well presented, the staff are friendly, helpful, and attentive, and the ambience is very pleasant. Would certainly come back again.

Went into this shop with my 2 gin-loving friends. Fabulous array of gins, but which to choose? Well we looked at various bottles, chatted about our preferences, all the time under the nose of the sales assistant. Sadly he was too involved in standing in the corner reading his book to be arsed with helping 3 ladies choose a bottle of gin each. So we walked out without any purchases as clearly we weren't going to get any assistance. Their loss.

Been here a few times now and I consider it one of my favourite bars. Cocktail menus fantastic and the shot game is dangerously fun. keep the good work going.

Nice cocktail... prices aren’t too out of the ordinary but not cheap either.

Myself and my partner decided to head in here for a few drinks before our train ,sat for 2 hours drinking a variation of cocktails then when I went to the bar for another round was asked for ID, to which I responded that’s fine I’ll grab it from my bag, silly me had left it in a bag from the previous night very annoying!! However explained to staff you have been serving me all afternoon down right rude and unnecessary as had been sat putting money in their till for the 2 hours they clearly weren’t bothered seeing as myself being 21 and partner 22 put a downer on the whole day disappointing.

Stopped off for a few cocktails - they had a good offer on for 2 £6.50 cocktails for £10 and made some lovely pina colada’s. The mai tai was not as good, very bitter, I think some syrup was missing but overall a nice visit and the gin selection in the shop is amazing. It does have a bit of a varied markup, some gin is more than £10 more than what would would pay elsewhere but some is much more reasonable. Worth pursuing but checking prices elsewhere so you don’t overpay.

Visited the Evil Eye gin shop and bar on a recommendation wow the shop was brimming with hundreds of special gins. We stopped for a drink in the bar and the cocktails were great value and very nice worth a stop on anyone’s itinerary

My friend and I had a few cocktails here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable and the range of drinks available is fantastic. I also liked how the interior was decorated and the choice of music, a great place for a night out with friends.

Yeah, evil eye, you’re a smelly, crusty gin joint with attitude. Everything I love and hate.

As one of the UK’s “Top 50 cocktail bars” it would have been rude to not give it a try. It’s definitely more quirky than classy, with a colourful and creative choice of cocktails on the menu. The staff were all good fun and friendly

Stumbled across this place by chance, so glad we did... such a crazy quirky place, our bar man was fantastic he recommended a different drink to what I’d asked for after asking me what I like, god did he hit the nail on the head it was absolutely awesome, an all round mint experience.. highly recommended

This place had been recommended and I was expecting a cool, grown-up cocktail bar. But that's not what this is. We went on a Saturday night and it was really loud (in fact they were blaring heavy metal music) and the vibe was more studenty than classy. Good selection of gins but the bartended couldn't even recommend a favourite. Martini was just ok. Disappointing.

Visited today and it was females making the cocktails. I had a cosmopolitan and the finished cocktail was about half to three quarters of an inch below the rim of the glass. There was very little alcohol in the cocktail, the main flavour was the cranberry juice.

Had to queue up for 15 minutes even though I had friends already inside. Overpriced. Overall very unimpressed with bouncer, the queuing system and crowd of larry 18 year olds on a Saturday. Plenty of other pubs in York!

Popped in one evening and came back again! Service is superb, drinks spectacular and atmos brilliant - the best place to drink in York!

My husband & I visited this place whilst on a city break in York. What a pity we didn’t discover it until the last part of our stay in the city! It’s a real hidden gem! The afternoon we visited was hot & sunny, so we sat outside in the small courtyard garden at the rear. Brilliant cocktails, mixed in front of you by friendly bar staff - and reasonably priced too. They also have a fantastic range of gins for sale. Certainly a “must visit” place

We walked past this place thinking it was a shop......someone recommended we try it and we realised it was actually a bar through the back with a great selection of cocktails and a very colourful beer garden. Well worth a wee visit.

Great selection of drinks and plenty of guns on offer. There’s a decent outdoor space as well as inside. If you want to hear the people you are with sit towards the front rather than near the bar!

We stopped for a drink and loved this place. Very quirky and interesting. Great gin shop attached. Staff were friendly. Amazing range of drinks on offer. Had the best gin I've had in a long time - poetic license blackberry and Bay. Highly reccomend when visiting York!

Visited with friends last weekend and if you enjoy being judged and dismissed as unworthy of even basic politeness by rude staff who seem blissfully unaware that it's your money paying them to lurk behind a bar sneering at you I'd heartily recommend you drop by. With an air of the least cool gang in the school yard the staff whisper together, looking you over until one shuffles forward, expressionless and seemingly intent only on impressing their chums with just how rude they can be to the customer daring to approach them. If you miss this feeling from your own childhood, this is the place for you. Personally I left this kind of thing behind many years ago, and will stick to bars staffed by grown-ups, who know how to act like grown-ups, in future.

Waited a fair time to be served having looked through the excellent gin shop at the front. Didn’t realise they was separate businesses and made the mistake of asking the lady behind the bar for a gin I’d seen the shop. Her reply extremely bluntly ‘look if you can’t see it we don’t sell it. Now what you want to drink!’ Was tutted at when I said I’d now need to speak to the wife as she was after the gin and tutted at again when paid by card. Avoid. Drinks was ok. Certainly nothing spectacular and definitely not worth the attitude of the staff!

This was a great find! Such a quirky building and great atmosphere. Great lost of Gins and Cocktails. Upstairs is a gem of a find. We missed it, but a great Bohemium atmosphere and you can almost lay down with your drink! Staircase was interesting and probably more so after a few drinks! Definitely worth a visit.

From the minute we walked in on a quiet Sunday lunchtime we were glared at by the three bar staff. Upon ordering our drinks (separately) the we were told abruptly that it’s easier to order three drinks together and were we paying separately.... because it’s £10 minimum spend. Having worked in many bars I understand that multitasking whilst making drinks can save time (the bar was empty with 3 staff) but the manner of the female staff member was rude.

A little disappointed that they didn’t serve food.

Terrible service, waited 25 minutes to get served, walked out in the end. Friends who got served said the cocktails weren't good.

We visited last week and what a let down. We first visited the Evil Eye last year and thought it was brilliant and we recommended friends and family visit. This year the service was disgusting, after placing our order and paying we then had to wait over 20 minutes for 2 gin and tonics. This year the emphasis of the bar seems to be cocktails. The only menu available was for cocktails. Previously there was a list of more than 20 gins describing the flavours and garnishes and what tonic to have. This was a useful thing to promote the gins which were available to buy in the attached shop.

Expertly mixes cocktails. Great ambiance. A marvellous selection and some really good deals. He decor is interesting and the staff are friendly and attentive. Overall a nice, friendly place to either alone or with friends.

When you walk into the Evil eye its quite dark inside. They have a massive array of gins in their shop aswell as behind the bar. Ordered a large gin and tonic and a diet coke and it was just under £12, in comparison we had just ordered exactly the same elsewhere and it was almost £4 cheaper. We wouldn't rush back.

Came across this bar whilst in York didn't even realise it was there. So much choice and the cocktails are amazing. There is a lovely sitting area out the back which is a great sun trap. If looking for somewhere with lovely cocktails and friendly staff definately somewhere to visit

I attended with my boyfriend on a Tuesday afternoon, the bar was busy considering it was midday which is a good sign! The selection of gins was very good behind the bar but unfortunately they have a much larger choice in the shop before hand and they don't mirror across to the bar. I found the pricing on the gins to be expensive in the shop, more than you would pay from Amazon etc. However our experience overall was very pleasent and the gins were lovely, would go again and would certainly reccomend. Quirky spot in the middle of York.

Its a Gin Palace at heart ( really mean that literally, has every conceivable Gin ), which has the best cocktail menu....which you keep trying and trying....

Me and my brother love Gin. This place is an Aladdin’s cave. Sampled a few in the shop before working through a selection of their finest concoctions.... absolutely superb... great ambiance and well worth a visit. its lovely in the garden in the sunshine

Popped in here to look at the gin selection. Ended up going into the bar for a drink. Great music, great vibe and was very inviting. Cocktail amazing and just a nice place to stop for a drink, socialise and people watch.

¡Amo este lugar! Me recuerda a los coffeeshops de Ámsterdam con un montón de habitaciones, todas con una sensación diferente, y una gran terraza para tomar el sol.

Tomé un par de cócteles aquí y los disfruté mucho. Este es un gran hallazgo y aunque cuando fuimos fue bastante, los diferentes pisos me recordaron a los bares en Ámsterdam, lo cual es bueno. Lo recomendaría encarecidamente este viernes o sábado por la noche.

Very interesting and weird in a good way! Nice atmosphere and many different floors to choose for seating. Very good selection of different cocktails, not too expensive. Very friendly staff and did I mention the excellent cocktails?

Nice atmosphere, great selection of cocktails not too expensive. I recommend the mojito and the rasberry tom Collins. It can get busy so you may need to wait to be served.

If you’re visiting York and like cocktails definitely go to the Evil Eye. Some of the best I’ve had and very reasonably priced. Loved the quirky decor and decent sized outdoor heated area too.

After visiting here with my girlfriend who spoke very highly of this place, probably because she was a female and that she managed to get served within a reasonable time. But when a 22 year old male turns up at the bar no bartender seems to be interested, fortunately I bumped into people I knew there and had a conversation with them which made the waiting less painful. However after 25 minutes of trying to get served I walked out and won’t be going back.

As usual - the evil eye lounge provided fabulous cocktails and I recommend this bar to all my friends. Really enjoyed the pina colada, French martini, English martini and the clockwork orange.

Probably picked a bad time to call in , york isnunder Siege from stag , hen and birthday dos on a weekend , had heard good reports so we sort this place out . Weird to get in as basically it’s the back of a shop which is sealed off so you go straight through to bar. We got there around 7:45 , bouncer on shop door let us in , it was rammed and bar area and all tables full of dirty glasses and looked like it had been under siege. Good menu especially if your a gin fiend but the shoddy / dirty feel of the place let it down for me

WOW WOW WOW how many gins ??? I absolutely love this place, the bar area is quirky, the staff are friendly and the drinks are very reasonably priced.

Every time I go to York this is an absolute must on my list! I love Evil Eye, the cocktail menu is brilliant and varied. Staff are always helpful in choosing or if you want something not on the menu they've got it covered. I could spend hours in here as its such a comfortable and chilled atmosphere. Be aware though that every man and his dog will be in this bar on a weekend so you might not be able to find a seat!

My first time visting York and walked past this little gin shop not realising hidden in the back there's a great bar. What a fab place and the cocktails we had were amazing. The staff were really friendly and knew their stuff. Would definitely visit again and tell my friends and family. Just fabulous.

Wow! A fantastic selection of gins & an extensive cocktail menu. Great deals & offers too.

First time visitor, recommended on Trip Advisor. Late pm on a Friday, buzzing with tourists and early finish workers alike. Enjoyed a couple of unusually flavoured gins. Lots of people movement so if a seat isn't immediately available, wait 5 mins and one will be. Not much else to say, if you like gin come here!

Bar area at rear of shop serving some great cocktails. Not overly busy when we visited on a Friday night but looked a lot busier following night when we walked past

This is the 3rd time I have been to the shop to buy a particular gin I wanted to try and on each occasion I have found the guy in the shop to be totally unhelpful! He has no interest in helping customers and if you ask for a gin that you want he just points and says it’s over there. I have even seen him rolling his eyes when you ask him a question, he’s totally of putting. On this occasion, I decided not to but the two special gins I wanted to try, both priced at over £40 each, I left instead and have found them on amazon instead. Such a shame, because I love the shop. A good salesman with a bit of knowledge about gins would be a real investment for the shop.

Spent a couple of hours in here over Easter whilst wandering around York. Didn't eat here but they have a great selection of cocktails. Decent sized outside seating area for somewhere located in the center of town. Will definitely visit again if we return to York.

After buying gin in the shop belonging to the bar we wanted to have one of the great cocktails in the bar. Unfortunately we were not cool enough or the staff was too busy chatting or trying to get organized. After 20 minutes of waiting at the bar and being deliberately ignored we left.

Could spend half an hour just looking at the selection of gins as you go in. Once inside the cocktail bar, great selection, good staff and reasonable prices!

This quirky little gem was recommended to us and I’m so pleased. The entrance from the shop is fabulous. I could see people wandering past probably unaware of what was inside! The cocktail and gin menu (my favourite things) was pretty extensive. There was plenty of other options...I just didn’t need to look at them. The staff were quick and cracking at their jobs. You definitely need a clear morning after the night before if you spend too long in here. We will definitely visit again.

Great cocktails good prices nice atmosphere. Try the long island ice tea it has a kick! My wife enjoyed the margherita as good as Florida apparently

I was absolutely shocked to find what I believe was a two way mirror inside the toilet's cubicle. I always check this things in public bathrooms and changing rooms so I was utterly creeped out by it.

What a find! From the most excellent, knowledgeable Katie who opened our eyes and pallets to some truly amazing, before unheard of, gins, to the equally enthusiastic bar staff who were both very knowledgeable and helpful with our imbibing. Totally recommend both services! A proper, genuine customer focused experience. A huge thanks for making our day.

what a great place, it is out of this world, there is an ancient force that drags you there and once you get in, you feel at home! looks like a normal shop and then , at the back, a new world open to you: cosy, "hygge" , old building , different in very corner....and the menu? hundreds of cocktails to die for....

This is mine and my boyfriends favourite place for cocktails! The atmosphere, the staff and the overall experience is amazing! I have been here for every birthday from my 18th - 22nd and will be going for my 23rd! Definitely recommend for nights out, casual drinks and special occasions!

Really good bar behind a shop of the same name. For gin lovers it's a must, I've never seen so many gins! The lady who served us was very knowledgeable about gins and accompaniments. The bar has a great atmosphere and theres an area where you can sit outside. When you've finished visit the shop for even more gins available to buy.

Amazing shop . Go through the back and enter the bar, at night it appears closed from the outside but it isn’t there’s a side door to the left . Amazing cocktails too . Only thing I would like to see is minatures of the evil eye gin , these would make excellent presents

Couldn’t be a better place for a gin fan to come when in York, an amazingly wide selection of unique and interesting gins.

Stumbled across this gem of a bar, and excellent choice of tipples, very experienced staff, good visuals at the staff making the cocktails, 3 floors of rooms to drink plus a heated outdoor bit, went back more than once in the week. Thanks

Excellent selection of Gin and I am told very nice cocktails. Prices not too bad but on second visit I did feel invisible at the bar as the staff failed to acknowledge my presence. Probably would go back though

Usually love this pub but today after attempting to get in twice and being told to come back in an hour as they were at capacity and noticing nobody was at the bar we will not be attempting to get back in again, its lovely not to go into a packed bar but think they have took it too far, shame teally as we love our cocktail in there

I can’t really say anything negative about this place as it might not be to my taste but I cannot really see what all the fuss is about. Very rarely see it quiet and unless you really want one of the cocktails you’ll just be paying over the odds for a bottle of beer or cider as they do not seem to have many draft options. Again, might just not be for me.

Having been before it's safe to say we like it there. They have plenty of cocktails to choose from and despite clearly not being able to try every one, the ones we did choose went down a treat!

We were very excited to visit this place especially after all the hype we read on the internet etc, but was disappointed.

It’s ok to say you’ve been but I think it’s over rated. I’m not sure what the appeal of the place is. You get better cocktails in the Slug and lettuce. Could do with a good clean too.

The cocktail menu is extensive! So many to choose from and made quickly considering how many people were waiting. I recommend the “amaretto in da ghetto”. 2 cocktails for £10 Monday to Thursday. Would recommend!

We visited this place after reading a lot of ‘hype’ online and although yes they have an impressive selection of Gins in the shop front ( majority you can get cheaper online mind ) , the bar itself is no better then a student bar.

Lots of lovely reviews about the cocktails...and I wholeheartedly agree. We had a wrongenstein and a martini...just yummy....lots of unusual ingredients in an unusual bar... but the toilets urghhhh! up 2 flights ( unless you use the disabled...tbh just use the disabled!) leads you to unisex room urinal in one wall and 2 horrible stalls on the other....the smell was horrible...the toilet seat was broken.... no one wants to see men having a wee as they come out of the loo!! No body would choose this way to take a leak!! Won't rush back and that's really sad cos the drinks are amazing!

After going through the wrong door and feeling like we were in Narnia, we found the right door and entered cocktail heaven. We went to the bar and after waiting a while (only downside) we chose our cocktails - “gin and sonic” and “lion and the lamb” - and sat down to enjoy them. Both were incredible and soon made us forget the long wait (probably because we were drunk). Music great. Atmosphere great. Deffo recommend.

What a great decieving little pub looks like a shop on outside till you walk through the doors all the cocktails gins you name it class love it.

By far my favourite bar in York. Great location, great drinks and great atmosphere. Sometimes think the service could be worked on but 5* for everything else

I've visited this bar before and had a lovely time. The drinks were fab. However since then, I've noticed its became really well known and now its very busy every time I visit York. I planned a day trip to York with my friends for my birthday and we planned to get drinks at Evil Eye. It was absolutely pouring down with rain on our way to Evil Eye and unfortunately as we walked toward the bar, the bouncer was chatting to someone (who I assumed must have also worked there). We opened the door and started to walk in before he quickly shut the door on us and walked up against us so we would back out the door way, he said to us 'you cant go in', I asked why and he replied with 'Its busy, if you want to come back, it'll be half an hour'. So we got chucked back in to the pouring rain. I understand places get busy and there will be a limited amount of people a bar can hold, but it was downright rude the way we were spoken too and forced out the doorway. Some general people skills wouldn't go a miss!

Girando per il centro di York, ci si imbatte in tanti locali interessanti ma Evil Eye è sicuramente una tappa obbligatoria. Il fatto che sia il cocktail bar preferito di Johnny Depp, già la dice lunga.

Well we visited sun 27th january. Ordered 2 evil eyes. My husband was asked if wanted a double... said yes unaware it was not a deal. It cost 16 pound plus and it was a glass full of ice could not taste any gin... love york but drinks seem to be extornationaly priced. We try out these quirky places but seem to get overcharged. Beginning to wonder if there us a tourist price and locals price......

The worst cocktails we’ve paid for. We ordered a mojito and old fashioned- the bartender was making it up as he went along. It took him forever to make. And if he new anything he’d know to start making the old fashioned first as it takes the longest. But he didn’t and took two seconds to make. With the mojito he didn’t mix the mint with the lime so it just tasted of lime juice. On top of it he was cocky and rude. Won’t be coming back and would advise everyone to avoid. And I’d advise the management if they are going to have such a big cocktail menu then they should train their staff.

We usually go to treat ourselves as it's different and a lil more pricey than our usual. Love the atmosphere, especially the playlist! The cocktails are amazing and all made properly. I've wanted an authentic Old Fashioned for ages and finally got one.

I’ve never been a big fan of this place but have been obliged to go with groups of friends from time to time over the years. Staff have always been very rude and arrogant and the music is dire. Popped in this weekend with friends who were visiting and was immediately struck by the grimy student atmosphere. No idea why this place is famous. I really must try not to get dragged in again!

Cashier/Shop attendant was extremely uninterested in customer interaction we asked a couple of questions about the products and got little more than one word answers. Over heard him talking to others and was huffing when they were speaking to him. Travelled a long distance to buy an expensive bottle that happened to be damaged when we arrived. He did not seem to care.

Es un buen lugar para ir de copas con los amigos o pareja, tiene una gran variedad de cerveza mundial a parte de los cocktail que hacen. También hacen pequeños platos de comida hasta cierta hora. Hay siempre un buen ambiente y los camareros son muy majos.

Our second visit to this quirky pub, 1st for daughter and her husband, very busy as Saturday afternoon but we got a table upstairs, lovely cocktails and good atmosphere I know it a very old building but the toilets do leave a lot to be desired!

Evil eye nearly turned into sleepy eye. Waited longer to be served after people arriving after me. Not particularly aware of who to serve next. Get it sorted please. Chucking drinks out to punters without serving in turn

We queued to get in..... and it was fairly quiet inside?? It was sticky and a bit smelly on arrival but we persevered as had heard great things. Cocktails were average, music was good. Wouldn’t rush back though. Felt more like the student bars I used to visit than a place I’d spend an evening in now I’m in my late 20s.

Be prepared for a very, very long wait despite numbers being controlled in the bar. 15 mins actually AT the bar ( not 2nd or 3rd row back) has put us off visiting again.

Visité York para una partida de borrachera. Encontramos este lugar por accidente, ya que al principio pensé que era una tienda. El bar está en la planta baja. La gama de pistolas y otras bebidas es excelente. El personal era educado y eficiente y los precios razonables. Subimos al piso de arriba, que estaba relativamente tranquilo y encontramos algunas sillas grandes de madera para sentarse. El piso de arriba tiene un estilo norteafricano / bohemio y es muy divertido. Estará apareciendo de nuevo. Darle una oportunidad.

¡Qué hallazgo! ! ! ,,,, encontrado por pura casualidad y, niño,,, qué lugar,,,, Una pequeña tienda de ginebra al frente, luego, a medida que la atraviesas, se convierte en el bar de cócteles del mal de ojo. El tipo que nos sirvió sabe lo que hace y él nos sació el apetito con sus creaciones de cócteles. Gran lugar,,, cada Gin, whisky, brandy que puedas soñar allí y el personal MUY útil. Haremos de este lugar nuestro puerto de escala 1 en nuestra próxima vuelta a york.
