Rake and Pikel in Cheshire West and Chester

Poor quality, dry and overcooked fish and chips meal Chaotic and forgetful service, however, lovely friendly and obliging staff.

We recently visited The Rake & Pikel to try out their new afternoon tea & it was superb. It arrived beautifully presented on a tier stand, came with freshly baked scones, a big selection of cakes, delicious sandwiches & wraps. Couldn’t fault the tasty food and came with a glass of Prosecco! Definitely will be returning

Just had a lovely afternoon tea at the Rake. Freshly made excellent quality sandwiches and wraps. Fresh scones with clotted cream and compote. Plus a generous selection of petit fours. This was accompanied by complimentary prosecco. Highly recommended.

On the good side, the young male member of staff was sweet and helpful but obviously new. The worst pub meal we have ever been served. The chips were overcooked, soggy and stale, the steak pies were such poor quality that they appeared to be filled with what resembled dog food. The burger was slathered in a condiment which wasn’t part of the description and the veggies were warm and limp. The gravy resembled brown jelly which flopped out of the gravy jug and its only flavour was one of pure saltiness! We sent all the adult meals back and did not wish for replacements so we’re only charged for the children’s meals. Won’t be returning ever, if I could give Nil Points I would.

The staff who serve in the restaurant are absolutely clueless. We asked for 2 glasses of wine and they had no idea what we meant, obviously do not get any basic training. I ordered the steak and ale pie. The pie came out in a tin foil container like the ones you get in a supermarket pack of frozen mini pies. My partner ordered the fish and chips. The chips were soggy and very dark brown in colour and the fish looked like it was out of a pack of frozen fish, again much like the ones from a pack in the supermarket. When I explained our disappointment to the staff member, they got very defensive and said everything is homemade and the chips were twice cooked which is why they were so dark. I’m really sorry to say that is utter rubbish and if I really wanted that standard of food I would have paid £8 at home instead of £41 in a restaurant for the same food. Rake and pikel you really need to improve your staff, food and general customer service if you want customers to return. We won’t be.

Visited for the first time since the arrival of the new management. We thought that the atmosphere was very welcoming. Our main reason for going was for Sunday lunch. Sadly, not very impressed with our meals. Portion sizes poor for the money. Vegetables luke warm only. Made worse by the fact that cutlery was only given a few minutes after the meals were delivered to the table. Gravy very watery and weak in terms of flavour. However, the beef was cooked well and tasty. Can't speak for the Turkey or Ham. They did seem a little light on staff which could account for the quality of the food on this occasion.

A real disappointing experience at The Rake Huntington yesterday. Commented on a post a few weeks back regarding menu ideas posted by the rake and suggested some Gluten free options but to have substitutes, instead of just removing the gluten items, others commented in agreement also. The rake commented that they would have items on the menu. Happy days 😋 Called yesterday to book a table for two adults and two children for a Sunday roast, I’m coeliac so asked some questions and was told I could be catered for, even had Gluten free cauliflower cheese on the menu….. Yum ! 😋. Called in on the way past to ask another couple of questions ( if you know, you know) 😆🙈 Arrived for dinner to be told Sunday roasts were all gone….. 😒 I asked what else was Gluten free to be told I could have steak but with new potatoes, not chips, burger but no bun and no chips but new potatoes, gammon but again, with new potatoes and the full English but no butter or black pudding. Black pudding I can understand but butter….? And that was it….. I could have sweet potatoe fries because only potato’s were cooked in that fryer but what potato’s are being cooked in there if i can’t have chips but can have the sweet potato fries?? I asked question after question to try and establish what was safe and what wasn’t and I have to say, the poor young waitress did her best but the information she was giving, didn’t fill me with confidence at all. So my husband and I I sat without food, while our children ate their dinner and we left. So disappointed as it really isn’t that difficult to cater for coeliacs and there seems to be less on this menu than the menu offered by the previous owners. We shan’t be returning for food again….

Last minute visit on a Saturday night. Friendly and helpful staff, Landlord bitter on drought and a decent sov blanc. There was, on this occasion, a somewhat limited pub menu but that suited us and the food was delicious and satisfying.

Popped in for Sunday lunch one afternoon. Everything was amazing from start to finish. Food, service, atmosphere. The pub is under new management. From what I hear they are a young family who have recently moved from another pub to here and what a change I have noticed already! They have added a small children's toy corner, colouring pads & crayons. The fridges are actually stocked with drinks for a change and it was nice to not see any glasses on top of beers because they were fully stocked! Have high hopes for this place going forward. It's a lovely local pub, just In need of the correct management.

We'd booked a table and turned up on time greeted by manager & sat at a table for 2 with RESERVED on. Thanks so much. Lovely charming young waitress asked us what we'd like right throughout our visit. Food took about 25 mins which is fab as you know its cooked to order. Very impressed with the portions and yeahhh served on hot plates. (That rarely happens these days) Charming bar staff. Very attentive. Lovely atmosphere in a country wooden framed pub/restaurant. Clientele very nice locals. Yes we will return, many thanks. The lighting is beautiful btw.

Such a lovely atmosphere and vibe. The pub is very homely and welcoming. I had the Turkey Sunday roast and I think it was genuinely the nicest I’ve ever had. My boyfriend had the smash burger and chips and he said everything about it was amazing, very good prices also! The service is amazing and the young girl who served us was lovely and helpful 10/10 recommend to everyone & we will be back again

It's not often service is exemplary but the team here are a shining example of this. Clearly not only did they show common sense, but have been trained well: they were just all so helpful and friendly. The veggie roast was a triumph and I left my coat which they insisted they would post on as I was back on the motorway heading for London. It's a gem. I look forward to a return visit when next in the Wirral. Highly recommended.

Chose this pub restaurant because it’s close to home and as I am a OAP with mobility issues. My friend and I were very pleased with the service, friendliness and the Dining Room is delightful, airy, comfy chairs and lovely view onto garden. If there was one complaint , I found it quite chilly in there, heating maybe had only just come on and as such a biggish room ,needed to be preheated. The food was really tasty and reasonable, I had the fish, chips & peas. Gorgeous fish with really lovely batter, crisp and great home made chips. My friend had Katsucurry which she declared had great flavour but parts of the chicken breast were a bit tough. But all in all great food great staff, we will be returning again soon.

We arrived and was informed there was no kitchen (I'm assuming they meant staff) and that they hadn't had their laptop to be able to see bookings. Was very friendly and apologetic but definitely shouldn't have been able to book a table through the website.

First time coming since new ownership. Felt very welcome on arrival. Good choice on the menu and reasonable price. Food was delicious.

What has happened here. Came in for dinner a couple days ago, firstly I called ahead and asked to book a table in the lounge area of the pub as I have mobility issues and the restaurant is just a little to inaccessible to me. The lady on the phone said we don’t take bookings in the lounge, I explained my situation and she proceeded to say that ‘I don’t make exceptions, not for anyone’ and followed with ‘the lounge is a first come first serve basis since I took over in October’ So I can only assume I spoke to the manager on the phone. So I came in anyway as I heard the food was good. Managed to get a table in the bar area but was made to feel in the way and was offered no help. If anything I felt like I was hindering their service and they didn’t want me there. Ordered my food and to say the least the food is the only saving Grace of this place. Fish was amazingly cooked, the little tapas dishes were so cute and cool. The service was disgraceful and borderline discrimination, I asked if they could bring the drinks to the table as I was not able to carry them and my partner was in the restroom, and the server (Glasses, dark hair and tattoos) acted like I asked to to cut off her arm. She really made me feel small. Once we had paid for everything we were just finishing up our drinks and a lady appeared from what I can assume is the upstairs living quarters. I assume this as she emerged in somewhat pyjama attire, hoodie, some shorts and slippers. She then proceeded to clear tables and chat to customers and go behind the bar. I honestly didn’t know what was going on. I assumed she was the manager as her voice sounded really similar to the one I spoke to on the phone. What kind of manger comes down in her pyjamas and starts clearing the pub! I was baffled. I will not be returning

Great local. Food is a bit pricy for what it is. Food is really nice but I just don’t think it’s worth the price on it. Drinks are reasonably priced for the area

Came here for dinner, food was really good! Service though leaves a lot to be desired. Bunch of teenage girls running the bar. Service was slow and wasn’t very friendly, asked for an Irish coffee at about 9:30 and was told that coffees were not served past 9pm, I’ve never heard this before. Men’s toilets out of order so my partner had to use the disabled, no issue with that but there was no soap and no hand tissue Again the food was lovely but was left sour by service and toilet issues

Very good offer £30 for 2 rump steaks with a bottle of house wine. Steaks were ok and mushrooms and tomato nice. Chips were average and pepper sauce lacked flavour. Excellent idea just needs to be executed a little better.

The restaurant part of this pub is a very nice conservatory with adequate space for a wheelchair. Food portion sizes were very generous and the food itself was good quality and nicely presented. The sandwiches were a particular hit with our group - bigger than the main courses! Lovely staff who didn't mind that we took our time over lunch and didn't hassle us to get the table back

We’ve been going to this pub off and on for 5 years. Last summer at last they were serving good quality and tasty food. Went for lunch recently and they’re back to serving bland poor quality food which is over priced. Won’t be going back!

Very pleasent pub with attentive staff, although the manager could maybe be more polite..... Food was average at best, pies with minimal filling and microwaved at best due to hard crust, frozen mash potato on one plate and frozen onion rings. Just overly priced bought in frozen food that's more expensive than big chains.

A friend and I wanted somewhere different to eat so thought we'd try here. The waiter was really helpful and friendly, choice of food very good. We both enjoyed our mains and desserts and when the bill came, were pleasantly surprised that we got 20% off the total because it was Tuesday, win win!! I would happily recommend this place from our experience.

Was looking for a place to eat with good pub grub and cam across this one quite by accident following a sat nav diversion. Had steak & ale pie with chips/peas & gravy. It was absolutely delicious. Piping hot, nice thick chips and very tasty gravy. Staff were friendly & landlord dropped by our table to check everything was okay. Very reasonable prices too. The pub itself was quite busy, seemed to be popular with locals so had a good vibe. Will definitely be visiting again.

We found this restaurant whilst staying two miles down the road at premier inn and was looking for a better quality of food as to what we were getting at the adjoining brewers fayre...Wow so you can imagine the dissapointment i got when firstly the waitress was paying very little attention to clearing away our starter dishes and dropped the dish in my lap and stained my trousers..I ordered the 8oz rump steak to be cooked medium to rare.. when i cut into it i there was no blood wat so ever showing on the meat...I sent the steak back and the chef cooked me another one... when this arrived there was absolutely no difference from the 1st one...Absolutely no appologies what so ever from the waiter or waitress for the spill on my trousers...Please could you re train your chef as to how to cook a steak at different temperatures..My whole experience at this restaurant was one i would like to forget and never repeat again..Absolutely disgusting customer service... Wasnt even offered a refund for the steak meal which was messed up twice!

Had family meal on Sunday with my daughter, we all had the Sunday roast and we weren't disappointed. What a fantastic meal, best roast we've ever had. Have eaten here numerous times from the chicken wings we've shared to the burgers (most things on the menu to be fair) and never had a bad meal. The chefs and staff are amazing, can't fault it

Avoid at all costs absolutely disgusting went there for a meal the chicken wings were raw and when we complained we just got a snide remark back saying they’re known for their wings well I’m sorry to tell you if you serve raw food expect people to moan would not recommend

Great first impressions, really friendly experience from entry and throughout. Nice seating options after opting for the pleasant ‘orangery’. Great food options, cooked beautifully from starters to mains and kids options. Really beautiful steak and kidney pudding for me!Slight issue at the end as the Tuesday 20% food discount wasn’t applied - but rectified when noticed.

I met friends for lunch in the pub garden. Everything was well organised and the staff were very efficient. We had Fish and Chips and really enjoyed our food.

Called in for lunch and was offered seating under the large gazebo. Table was in desperate need of TLC, and the weeds at the side of the table were a real eyesore. Not just talking about a few weeds - these were massive stinging nettles around 3/4 feet high. Anyhow the seating arrangements aside, we ordered a couple of sandwiches. Both of these were really disappointing. Margarine had been used instead of butter, and this really doesn’t go with a hot sandwich. Had a pint of Guinness, but only had a few sips of it as it just didn’t taste right. The chips were the only redeeming feature - they were lovely!Overall though, we were both extremely disappointed and shan’t be returning anytime soon. I know lots of people like it, but there is so much better available in the local area.

A lovely pub on the outskirts of Great Boughton where a very warm welcome awaits you from the owner and staff. Very good value all home cooked with lovely chefs special's a great value traditional pub , that's hopefully around for a long time.

Took my wife for lunch and arrived without booking. The manager was helpful and got us a nice table. Fully sanitized everywhere and Covid aware.Young lady (student) was extremely polite and chatty - which we always prefer.Had the pie and pint /wine option - excellent pastry and contents were tasty.Dessert was a shared Cheesecake with Ice Cream.Overall really good .

Portions sizes were generous and the food was delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Tables were spaced well apart and felt covid safe. Highly recommend the red thai curry and chocolate fudge cake. We had a lovely family evening. We will definitely be back after the second lockdown.

Llamado ad - hoc el sábado pasado. Buen saludo por parte del propietario (asumimos). Sentado en una hermosa mesa junto a las grandes puertas plegables en la elegante extensión con marco de roble con vista al área al aire libre para niños.Buena comida, el entrante Duck BonBon y la cena de rosbif fueron perfectos.Servicio amable de nuestra camarera (¡aunque la otra chica recogiendo vasos podría haber hecho con una sonrisa!).A nuestro hijo de 6 años le encantaba jugar con otros niños en el marco de juego del jardín al aire libre.Sin duda volveremos, ¡gracias R&P!

Lo único que arruinó la noche fue ver cómo se desmayaba la joven camarera de cabello oscuro y rizado y su amiga que parecía extremadamente joven. El servicio parecía lento ya que mi esposo vio a un joven de cabello oscuro parado en el bar hablando todo el tiempo y prestando más interés por su imagen. Siento que este establecimiento es genial, ¡pero cierto personal no hace mucho! Por favor, dígale a la gente que deje de hablar, es realmente angustioso ver a las camareras pobres correr sin ayuda. ¡Volveré porque la comida era increíble! Muchas gracias rake y pikel

I booked a table for 6-30 arrived early ordered drinks which were dear in my opinion I.e. £2-35 for a small coke and 70 p for a small lime and soda eventually they came for the food order and we were told there would be a one hour wait for food we were not impressed and left.

Lovely experience at this pub, helped with gluten free choices by polite, smiley Courtney and even managed to get the best gluten free beer! Kids and puppy made feel very welcome, we will be returning x

We had a wonderful lunch today sat outside in the garden. Enjoyed our drinks and food. We recommend the specials board! We would like to thank Courtney for a great service and for going above and beyond to help my friend find a suitable gluten free meal. We are returning next week to try more delicious food!

Mum and I went today for lunch, we hadn’t been before, but heard good reviews. We’d booked a table for 2pm, on arrival all Covid safety was in place. All the staff were delightful and the choice of food on the menu was excellent, we sat in the Orangery which was lovely. We both had Hunters Chicken, everything was cooked fresh, and tasted lovely. We noticed salads going to other tables and they are definitely on our list for our next visit.

Visit here a lot these days. It’s been turned round by the current owners from a run down, tired old backwater pub to a quality place to visit.Food is excellent, and allways something different to chose from the specials menu. Often go fancying something to eat off the menu and have to change my mind when I see the specials! Very friendly staff and do what ever they can for you. Looking forward to the summer as the outside area looks very good for an afternoon in the sun. Also has a decent size area for kids to play. Strongly recommend giving this place a go if your in the area. Plenty of locals in here it I see that as a good thing, they wouldn’t be in there if it was no good! Will defo be back

I've called in the Rake & Pikel a few times now for quick lunch and a beer. The food has always been spot on and great value. Recently called in for a fried chicken sandwich which was really nice. It came with plenty of salad and home-made coleslaw. There is also a good selection of beers and cask ales. One of my favourites being the Landlord Timothy Taylor which is a really good pint. It's a great place to watch live sports and also has a fantastic beer garden. Also the staff are always really polite and friendly. Highly recommended!

Queued at the bar. Got to the front of the queue and a friend of the barman's walked to the front of the queue and, without a word, got served straight away. Clearly a local pub for local people.

I booked this venue for my mums wake January 2020 and selected the buffet menu. The menu states ..."A selection of sandwiches served on bloomer bread to include " and then lists the sandwich fillings which were correct, however the bread was NOT on bloomer bread as stated, they were exactly the same to look at as the sandwiches which can be purchased from local supermarkets and were even in the plastic containers as you pick up from these places. Unfortunately they sandwiches were not to the standard of supermarkets the bread was dry and the fillings hurt your eyes looking for them. A family member tried to speak to the manager regarding the poor sandwiches and was brushed off with contempt ! offering no resolution or recompense .Please do not book here you will be sadly disappointed, and at £6.95 a head for sandwiches that were very substandard and NOT as described in their menu !!!

The pub has improved a great deal in the past year. Good atmosphere, great beer and honest food. Don’t expect a ‘high end’ Gaston pub food and you will be fine. Always hot, fresh and tasty.

We visited here for tea as we live nearby. Friendly staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Food was delicious, I can recommend the steak and ale pie. We would definitely recommend.

Booked table in the conservatory, straight to table, staff lovely and looked after us, had sunday dinner, very nice, apple pie and custard for dessert. Will go again, highly reccomend, really good value and service.

This was my first visit since the change of ownership and refurbishment. I was really impressed with the decor and the conservatory area which was a lovely dining experience.The staff were warm, welcoming, friendly and attentive. It was an extremely relaxed atmosphere.The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The roast got a huge thumbs up gravy amazing and all freshly prepared....There was lots of food envy! Rake burger, chicken kebab all stunning.It was extremely good value and I would highly recommend a visit to all the family. Thoroughly enjoyable.....

My first visit after its refit, quite nicely done and conservatory a delightful space. But very little atmosphere and food was about average. I had scampi which was lifeless and unexciting, chips were ok but miserly amount of Tatare Sauce which I had to ask for. So service ok but don't think I would be rushing back. They need to inject some sparkle to tempt diners in and I don't specifically mean Christmas sparkle, it's all in the aura of a place. Sorry but not for me.

Visited with friends earlier this week. The refurbishment has transformed the place and moved it up a considerable notch. Staff very welcoming, service good, food excellent value and very tasty. Will definitely return .

Got in the pub and immediately shown to a table, ordered and food arrived in no time, piping hot really tasty, 2 satisfied customers, will definitely be visiting again.

Manager & all the staff love dogs, ours is always made to feel very, very welcome & is given lots of affection plus various tasty treats. The food is great, particularly the Sunday roast. Can’t ask for more from your local than a warm welcome for you & your dog, reasonable prices & tasty food. Highly recommend.

Vine aquí por primera vez hace un par de semanas con mi novio. Nos sirvió una joven con cabello oscuro y un anillo en la nariz. Parecía que no podía ser mucho mayor de 16 años, pero no entendió su nombre. Después de haber trabajado en un restaurante durante 5 años, sé cómo tratar al cliente Y al servidor. En todo momento parecía que no podía molestarse en estar allí en lo más mínimo, probablemente fue el peor servicio que he tenido. Ella evitó cualquier contacto conmigo y cuando le pregunté si podía tomar un poco de salsa, me miró sin decir nada y nunca volvió con ella. Esto me pareció un poco extraño, ya que no podía parecer más feliz de ayudar a mi novio, a quien dirigió todas las conversaciones de espaldas a mí. La comida estuvo buena. Es una pena porque no volvería aquí otra vez.

A group of us visited the restaurant for the special Indian menu considering there were 30 of us they coped very well, the food was of a very high standard .

Pasé por un trago y algo de comer. Tuve que esperar en el bar como una sola persona que sirve. Me senté en una mesa y miré a mi alrededor cómo eran las comidas y no me impresionó. Decidimos no comer cuando vimos a una joven que traía un perro pequeño y lo tenía sentado en la mesa. Yuk! El propietario lo vio pero no le dijo que lo quitara de la mesa. Terminamos nuestra bebida y nos fuimos. Pensando desde un punto de higiene, llamé al arrendador y me quejé y me dijo que no lo había visto. Nunca pongas un pie allí desde entonces.

Party of 6 people for birthday meal for my daughter. Excellent starters and meals all round. The service was excellent. Very helpful and friendly staff.

This place is a million times better since new owners took over early this year! 3 of us have just had a really nice meal- great burger, braised steak and salmon fillet. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a chilled out atmosphere - will definitely be back. Good service too.

Not eaten here since it reopened, but was very impressed with the menu range (including vegetarian options) and the quality of the food. Service was excellent too. Recommended.

We went for a Sunday afternoon meal. Food was reasonably priced but unspectacular- standard pub grub. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Used to visit the pub when previous owners there and always enjoyed it. Not been for a while but popped in on Monday. Really impressed with the conservatory. Comfortable seating and a lovely ambiance. Very impressed with the menu and the prices - everything a pound or two cheaper than expected! Will be back!

Called in after a leisurely Saturday stroll. Large beer garden - great when he sun is out. Play area for children too. Didn't eat. Looked good from the outside. Plenty choice of drink

Lovely to have a local pub serving good food in pleasant surroundings with friendly staff - but - why on earth can’t the bill be split? 3 of us wanted to split a bill but it isn’t “allowed” on the till. Each person has to tell the waitress exactly what they had - food and drink - and pay individually!! Come on - this is 2019! Imagine a busy night and everyone remembering exactly what they ate and drank and waiting while waitress comes back and to, taking individual payments! Spoilt an otherwise lovely evening!

Allegedly dog friendly but only if you are willing to sit at a table outside the grounds on a busy road or at one of 2 outside tables shoved in the corner on the hot stone. Nearly all outdoor tables are on the cooler grass but no pooches permitted, but feel free to rip up the grass with bmx bikes and prams apparently. Witnessed 2 poor women who hadn't spotted the manager's sign being told off by him when he served their lunch. He made them eat their food while holding their daschund on their lap. Needless to say they left the minute they had finished. Such a shame.

Newly refurbished pub with separate dining room. A good varied menu at reasonable prices. On certain nights they have special menu, for example steak for two with a bottle of wine. Booking is advisable on these nights. Food was delicious and well cooked, service was prompt from very friendly staff. There is a beer garden with swings etc for the children. A clean and welcoming pub.

I have visited the rake and Pikel twice since it has re-opened and wow what an overhaul it has had! Good prices, friendly and helpful staff and damn good food served in a lovely private, spacious and well presented eating area. Place looks great and I look forward to the nice visit already!

Just has tea and a catch up at the Rake with a friend. The food was lovely, staff really friendly and a there was a nice atmosphere. Will be back really soon!

No comí aquí pero he tomado varias bebidas. El exterior es adecuado para niños y tiene una agradable área de juegos, tiene una gran área para sentarse a la derecha. El servicio era bueno y un buen lugar para llevar a los niños debido a la zona de juegos.

What a gem to the neighborhood! And what a lovely setting! Since the renovation earlier this year it is just a lovely place to hang with the kids and friends, especially if sunny!

Just visited for Sunday lunch and it was amazing!! Huge portions, friendly staff and a great setting . We will definitely go back very soon xxx

Just home after a mid week dinner as our daughter just got the result of her degree. Gorgeous food. My husband had the mixed grill....it looked amazing. Girls had the hunters chicken and said it was delicious and I had the kebab. So yummy. We will be back and recommend this place. It's lovely and the staff are very friendly. Thanks for a lovely night.

I have been visiting this bar since 1974. It was then a d is now a great bar. The food has changed a lot from hot pies to sit down good food. I would recommend it for families and a night out.
