1/5 I waited 2 hours to be served a wet sloppy curry with not texture or flavour. The waiter spoke little English and tried to make us pay for tap water. Such a disappointing experience and I will be reporting its service to the curry police.

The Rajpoot came with a recommendation so the expectation was very high. The starter was excellent, however the wait between servings was not, seemed to take ages and on a Wednesday evening there were only 9 people in the restaurant. The main curry was average and the accompaniments let it down, rice was bland and the so was the naan, which was also very dry. Whilst eating the waiter stood in the corner texting or face booking people all evening and not concentrating on his custom. It wasn't cheap at £35 a head and I only had 1 beer. Overall a little disappointing, I won't be going again.

We've been here a few times as treat. It's more expensive than your standard curry house, but the food is nicer and so are the surroundings. Not sure why it's got poor reviews from other customers.

My partner brought me here for our second date and we had a very nice time. It feels like you're walking into someone's living room rather than a restaurant which was a bit disconcerting at first because there was no-one else there (but it was a Tuesday). Once we sat down and got settled it was fine though and the food was tasty and waiter was friendly.

Visited on. Saturday night - sitting down at 7pm. Ended after 10.30 and at £36 per head poor value - without water on the table, coffee or any extras.. Staff seemed totally untrained and service was so slow with drinks being forgotten off the order. Chutneys were the best part of the meal All but one of the main courses came out look warm and we're ultimately bland. Toilets a disgrace . An unlit stairway with timed light switch that went out after 2 seconds - not even long enough to get half way up the stairs. Toilets dirty and the shower cubicle in the gents (yes you read that right) was full of rubbish. Left feeling ripped off and glad to get home..

My wife and I visited the Rajpoot on the spur of the moment for dinner. The period Victorian dining area was nice but not good. The highlight were the staff who were excellent, very polite and attentive. We had some poppadoms to start but the sauce bowls were dusty and had dried sauce around the tops which looked to have been there for some time. We didn't have a starter and went straight for a main course. Both of our meals were very poor, my wife's was more like warmed baby food, was virtually tasteless and had no substance. The rice portion was the smallest I've seen and over-done. My meal had the smallest amount of meat content I've ever been served and the curry sauce was bland and unappetising. Also accompanying our main course was a side serving of limp, shrivelled salad. We shared a plain naan and a Peshwari naan bread, both of these were good and the best part of the meal. I rarely post reviews but this restaurant was considerably more expensive than any Indian restaurant that we have visited in Bristol (almost double the average) and so much worse than any that I can remember, I feel obliged to point this out to anyone who is going to part with their hard earned money for this standard of food. I didn't complain to the staff as the shortcomings in the meal were so numerous I don't believe it would have been within their ability to put things right.

As a first time diner here, I thought I'd play it safe and order a medium curry, however, it was bland, only just warm enough not to send back and uninspiring. The chicken did not taste or look as if it had been cooked in the clay oven as stated on the menu and lacked flavour and the sauces were quite runny. Presentation was not great and neither was the service; nobody offered to take our coats on arrival and we had to put them over the backs of our chairs that were already squeezed up against the wall down one side of the table. After the mains were served, it became evident that one of our group had been forgotten - we all waited for a while but he insisted that we forge ahead before our food got cold. Luckily he is a fast eater and was able to catch up but the delay should not have occurred in the first place. The peshwari naan bread was very good and was served nice and warm. The surroundings are pleasant enough although lower lighting would create more ambience. I wouldn't rush back.

Went here to celebrate an anniversary having heard good things about the restaurant. The food was awful I had tandoori which did not resemble meat it was so over cooked . My in laws had an awful curry that was really bland. The waiter said he didn't work there as he struggled unsuccessfully , to get our orders right . We spoke to the manager after the event as we did not want to spoil the celebrations and he promised to get us back for a really good meal , despite saying he was a man of honour , this never materialised , even though my husband called several times. It was expensive and disgusting and there are far better restaurants all over bristol

This Indian restaurant if different, very different in a very good way. Although the food selection does contain some old favourites, there are many dishes that are unique to this restaurant. I Chose a Jalfrezi and my husband chose a milder dish, both were cooked to perfection and you could really taste the spices. Service was pleasant and professional even that young guy was the only one to serve and the bill was not too hefty either. I certainly would go back here and would very much look forward to doing so.

I visited Rajpoot for the first time recently and given the recommendations, I was expecting good things. The interior is small and is like sitting in a living room but I liked it. What was a simple 2 course dinner took about 3 hours. Service was painfully slow and we had to ask for water 3 times. When we did get it we had to ask for more and for more than 2 glasses for a large table. My main meal was forgotten, the rest of the table got theirs so I waited. Then a waiter asked me what I had ordered, obviously they couldn't remember! The rest of the table had nearly finished their food when mine finally arrived. I did enjoy my food but it wasn't amazing and given the cost I was expecting it to be better. I won't be returning, there are plenty of better Indians in Bristol and with far better service.

Wow, this is an old school Indian restaurant, from being greeted by a very friendly and sincere Manager, to sitting in a small well appointed dining area, I knew we were in for a treat. Not disappointed, I started with Calamari chilli fry patti, yes really, similar to a prawn puri but squid, highly recommended, my partner had spicy spring rolls, just as tasty, mains were delicious, prawn puri and Rajpoot chilli masala, both well spiced but not mind blowing. Each dish came with a sensible sized portion of proper saffron rice, I also ordered a side portion of sag aloo. The food is fresh, we'll cooked, well presented and the service was impeccable.A great evening with relaxing views over the downs. Worth every penny, I adore Indian food and have just discovered my new favourite restaurant. Very highly recommended, good parking too

We had a VIP guest to entertain and the result of a web search indicated that Raj Poot was one of the best Indian restaurants in Bristol. Our experience was far from that. I have lived in Bristol since 1997 and the food served by Raj Poot was the worst I have encountered in Bristol. The service was equally poor; a young waiter who obviously had no training or experience attended us with uncertainty and looked confused when quized on various dishes offered on the menu. The bill for 4 people was just over £125.00 and did not represent a good value either. I would not recommend this restaurant.

I continue to be amazed by the sheer awfulness of Indian Restaurants in Bristol. Comedy service, bland food, creeping prices and total disregard for fresh, quality ingredients. I remember going to this restaurant many years ago, and it was one of the more acceptable Indian Restaurants in Bristol. But something has happened! It looks tired, the focus seems to be on the takeaway part of the business, the owners must have changed I think. Unfortunately, this restaurant is now like most Indian Restaurants in Bristol, homogenised food, waiters who would do better in Fawlty Towers than attempt to give you a pleasant dining experience, and most disappointedly, the food is well below standards. If this were allowed to happen in Birmingham, Manchester or London, the Curry Police would put the owners, chefs and waiters behind bars.

Easily the most abnoxious place i, or any of the people with me, have ever tried (!) to eat in. We were more than eager to eat here, but after the unfriendly welcome and then the pints of Cobra beer that were UNDRINKABLE as they tasted so off, we had to leave. We would have been happy with an apology and replacement drinks but instead all we got was argument from the very grumpy waiter, telling us how wrong we were. Unfortunately my girlfriend insisted on paying for the mostly undrunk beers - we were more than justified to just leave. It leaves me wondering how bad the food is. The sooner this place goes under, the better. If you want to be treated like a human being and eat good food as well, go a little further down whiteladies road to piazza di roma (where we went afterward and had a great meal) or the black boy inn, another fantastic place around here. Note that this Rajpoot is not affiliated with the Rajpoot in Bath, which apparently is excellent.

I arrived and was instantly greeted warmly by the staff who seated us and have us ample time to choose our meals over a beer. This is the best Indian restaurant that we have been to. We were recommended this place by a friend . It's in a beautiful room of a Victorian house with period fitting without being too Indian like many other places but the food is truly Indian. My first visit to The Rajpoot may quite possibly be my last! It wasn't terrible but somehow underwhelming and very over-priced. The atmosphere is sweetly old fashioned and I enjoyed the white linen tablecloths and napkins but it was busy and slightly chaotic. We had booked a table but had to wait for ten minutes, standing at the bar trying not to get in the waiters' way (difficult) at the same time as trying to attract someone's attention ( difficult) ! Once seated it was more relaxing but the food, when it arrived, was hardly going to excite. After some popadums (minty sauce and chutney was an extra you had to pay for) I chose the Tandoor Trout to start and it was ok - a bit dry and to be honest the flavour was on the skin only. My main was the vegetable korma which had a welcome creaminess after the fish. Personally I was pleased at the moderate portion size as I wasn't overfaced by it, but for the price it was pretty spare fare. My companions went for tandoori king prawns (big but a bit tasteless) chicken korma and chicken masala and declared themselves happy with their choices. The service was alright - a bit slapdash and impersonal - and when the bill for four of us, including a couple of beers each, came in at £150+, we were not much compelled to leave a generous tip. We eschewed puds or coffee and didn't really feel like lingering. On the whole it wasn't a dreadful meal - just a bit bland and uninspiring. I think the Rajpoot rests on its laurels a bit. I have tasted much better Indian food in Bristol. This lacked edge or flair and, for the price, any sort of singular ability from the chef. Sadly disappointing. Oh, and the experience gave my partner terrible stomach ache throughout the night - make of that what you will!

Booked a table for 4 on Saturday evening, for dinner with friends, having not eaten at the Rajpoot for a couple of years. We arrived at 8.40 to find the restaurant absolutely packed, including 2 guys waiting for takeaways, so had to stand at the bar whilst waiters shoved past us. It was clear to me that there was no chance of a table coming free in the next few minutes and I prepared myself for a sharp exit. The takeaway blokes left and suddenly the "waiting" table that they were sat at was transformed into our table! Not ideal, a bit cramped in the corner, next to the kitchen but at least we had a table. The staff were obviously busy and tried their best to look after us but it did take a while to get a drink and the menus. The food was very good when it arrived; I went for Calamari Patti (squid in a mild curry sauce on a paratha), followed by Chicken Jalfrazi, very zesty and nice and spicy. My wife and one of our friends ordered the crab cakes, which unfortunately were cold in the middle. In fairness they were replaced, with apologies, but meant that they had to sit watching us eat our starters whilst they waited for their food. The other thing about the Rajpoot is that they serve the main course curries in little bowls on your plate, as opposed to having heaters on the table, which makes sharing dishes difficult. Then there is the toilet. To get to the gents you have to leave the dining room, go into the hallway and head upstairs. This has the feel of trespassing in someone's flat. The toilet is laid out like a regular shower room, with the addition of a urinal, but the shower cubicle is filled with paint pots and other decorating sundries. All very odd.Whilst we were finishing our meal, the large party next to us left and the staff started to dismantle their long table and lug the table top upstairs. All a bit off-putting and quite disruptive. However, we were in good spirits and the whole experience left us in fits of laughter.£50 per couple wasn't silly either but it will be back to the Bengal Raj for us and a more relaxing experience next time. The food was good at the Rajpoot and the staff tried hard but I really can't see how they can claim to be Bristol's top Indian restaurant ?

The Raj Poot restaurant is my all time favourite Indian. The food is consistently good made with quality ingredients. I love the squid starter and the lamb tikka masala is amazing. Beautiful restaurant, in a cosy living room type space (make sure you book on weekend to guarantee). We live close-by and have found ourselves returning every few weeks. You do pay a little more (£12 per head for a main, but it comes with rice) but its well worth it for the quality of the food and the service - particularly the owner who is a lovely and welcoming host and who is passionate about the food and will recommend new dishes every time you visit. As a couple we go to a lot of Indian restaurants and this one really stands out to us as our favourite.

Went there as a guest as a thank you.The prices are very expensive, so expected the best Indian ever, not the case I'm sorry to say.The starter was OK, although we all experienced an overridding taste of vinegar on the salad which detracted from the taste of the 'real' starter. We all commented on this however thought that was maybe a 'speciality' of the house. However, when the main courses turned up we all (again) had the same experience, we complained and were then made to endure a verbal grilling from the staff about where we normally ate and how superior their cuisine was?!We refused to pay for the main courses (uneaten) but paid for the very expensive wine and starter. Not a good experience, expected so much more from the food and the service on the night. They do however seem to have a repeat clientelle prepared to pay for this level of offering - who probally think it's got to be the best due to the (over)pricing. We will not repeat the experience - ever.

We used to eat here a lot in the early - mid 90s, when this was THE Indian restaurant in Bristol, possibly the best in the south west at that time. We hadn't been for a long, long time and, because it is close to home and it was pouring with rain and we were at a bit of a loose end, we decided to go again. The decor was still classy and it's clear that the restaurant and clientele are quite 'Clifton' and aiming to be a cut above that of the average Indian. The food was good - light and clean for Indian, the flavours were very individual in each dish rather than everything tasting generically of 'Inidan', like many curry houses. The onion bahjis and crab cakes as starters were excellent, the kashmiri chicken very good. I like that the main courses arrive plated. The service had definitely deteriorated since we were last there. Polite, with just 2 x waiting staff, they were a little too stretched to be anything other than perfunctory and only just about efficient. There is a lot of competition now in up market Indian and the competition has overtaken Rajpoot a little. However it is still good and better than the vast majority of Indian restaurants in Bristol. Overall rating would be 'good', better than average, not very good.

I ate here with a friend to take advantage of a voucher card offer to bring prices into a far more reasonable area.We went straight to the mains and I had a Lamb Jalfrezi. Tender meat with a well constructed taste. It was clear that the chef had put some time into thinking about how he/she wanted the dish to taste. The rice was good and the salad on the side a strange but appreciated touch. What made the meal a little sour was that the staff took three separate attempts to get the bill correct, first giving us another table's bill and then neglecting to discount the total correctly. Quite why they could not get it right first time is a bit of a mystery - there was only one other table being used in the entire restaurant. At its normal prices it's clearly too expensive but with a voucher it makes a nice change. Don't be under any illusions though about the restaurants location or prices - it's not particularly special.

I suspect this Indian restaurant sets out to be a cut above the rest, which it is, in terms of decor, which is delightful and tasteful. The food, however, was poor and over-priced - popadums were soft, and the owner tried them but insisted they were 'normal'. I've been to the Raj Poot several times before, and the food and service were good on those occasions. But on my most recent visit, the service was shockingly poor. We did not feel at all welcome when we arrived. We ordered drinks and a jug of water. The water did not arrive, and we had to ask for it again. We paid with cash, and I waited for the change to be brought back. And I waited. And I waited. All the while the waiter was doing obviously non-urgent tasks - the restaurant was quiet and few other tables were occupied. I can only assume that the waiter hoped to just keep the change. Eventually it arrived after I caught the waiter's eye and held it for some time - he got the message. Foolish of him - he would have got a tip that exceeded the value of the change if he had behaved properly.

Great food, fresh and tasty with loads of flavour. Much cleaner and lighter than your average Indian cuisine. Both the starters and main came with a small side salad which was welcomed, the only downside being that it was covered in French dressing - very odd flavours that didnt compliment the dishes we had at all!Unfortunately the service was awful. There were two waiters serving the small restaurant but they didnt seem to be holding service well at all. We arrived at 8pm and still didnt have our mains by 10. We sat with our dirty started plates in front of us for over half an hour and even when we stacked them up ourselves (a pretty visual hint!) the waiters continues to serve others drinks and clean down other finished tables. Terrible!Overall, the food was of a high standard, it was just a shame it was let down by super slow and inconsiderate service.
