Rajpoot in West Dorset

Went there with a group of old friends from Romania, Slovenia, Denmark and UK and had a great meal. Service was fairly Slow, but I think they were short of Staff (our english friend said so) that evening. However, the food (and beer) was absolutely wonderful. We all liked it - even the one who had never had an Indian meal before, I have been to Rajpoot a couple of times before over the years, but I think, this was the best so far.

I see that there has been several bad reviews. Let me put people at ease , we had a fantastic meal food really tasty and the service from the staff was great . The restaurant was packed and not once did we receive bad service. Food came out within a reasonable time and was piping hot . I do really think some people expect to much . Would definitely recommend

Never have I been so disappointed when going out for a family meal, we thought we would try Rajpoot in Sherborne but was very disappointed with the tasteless food and the service we were given was shocking, we were seated next to a very loud group that you could not even hear your own conversation on the table, the staff were extremely rude and unhelpful when asked for help working the bill out as wanted to pay in small groups we was given a menu, paper and a pen and told to work it out ourselves or would have to pay 20% service charge, the restaurant is very run down the window seal is all loose and nearly falling off could do with re-decorating.

Lovely food great atmosphere very attentive staff well worth the money and my kids were looked after too nothing was too much trouble

Excellent food and service. Popular - very busy on a Monday night in January. Even though the restaurant was busy the food was hot and not delayed. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were very impressed.

The Rajpoot Team are amazing and go out of their way to ensure you have a good experience. This restaurant is a firm favourite of ours and we have dined with friends and family over and over. Food is delicious and team are exceptional. Thank you all for looking after us.

Really helpful, friendly staff. Six of us and all had really nice dishes. Open on Sundays. We will return. Back for another meal with seven this time. The Raj Poot Team were amazing with my elderly dad. I cannot thank you all enough for your professionalism and discretion. My dad had the best night. Had a stunningly good meal at the Rajpoot last night. Our table of 6 all agreed it was the best Indian meal we had experienced for ages. Service was spot on too. Yes the decor is a bit tired but that is a minor feature compared to the exceptional food.

Ended up taking the kids for a curry as there was so little choice in Sherborne. 3 options on a wed night - 1 we’d been to the night before, 1 had no kids menu and didn’t really want children and everything else closed. It was an error. The food was average. Good naan bread but the bhajis were bad and the curry’s lacking in substance. Service for us was ok. Not helped as the table behind was vocal and odd whilst another group sat down, had an argument with the waiter and then left abruptly. Could imagine this at 10pm but not 6pm with the kids. Sadly wont be returning.

First visit great place to visit hence 5 stars. I will definitely be returning again.

The service was great. Immediate attention on entering and given a table quickly. A reasonable amount of time given make choices before ordering and food served quickly. Be aware that there is a minimum order of £20 per person excluding drinks. Decor and furniture tired, but other good atmosphere. Would use again for a casual meal out, but not good enough for that special meal.

Average food … average price …if this restaurant was in a large city it would struggle … but as it’s in sleepy old Sherborne it can get away with it.. still not bad but don’t go here expecting great Indian cuisine!

Good food, friendly staff and good service

We have eaten dinner here twice recently and all the food has been excellent. The service is very friendly and attentive. The portions are huge. Mains are served on full sized dinner plates so it's not quite so easy to share. The second time we had the very good poppodoms and chutneys and no starter as we were unable to eat everything first time with starters, and I can eat a lot. The food is quite spicey hot for a non city centre Indian restaurant, the Bombay Potatoes being particularly peppery. I am still at Jalfrezi level working my way back up to Vindaloo. There is something strange going on here with all the recent 1* reviews as they are all posted by people who have not posted any other reviews on TripAdvisor.

The curries were excellent, enjoyed from age 10 to 66 yes and couldn't fault the device or atmosphere. Best curry I've eaten in a long time

Great Indian restaurant and I cannot recommend this place enough. The starters are well seasoned and curries are very tasty. The dishes are reasonably priced and you definitely get more than what you pay for. To top it off, the customer service was exceptional. Highly recommend!

I have been to this restaurant many times and always had a pleasant experience but last night my family were treated appalling by rude arrogant staff. We had not booked and arrived at about seven pm I thin I was recognised as I’d been many times before with my son, it was not full but we were asked to sit in-front of the bar where takeaways were picked up and suggested the side room. Service was slow but we eventually got drinks and then eventually were asked if we wanted popadoms, we did and the waiter shot off before we found order mains and disappeared they eventually arrived and were good but we had been unable to order our main course. After a long wait after the popadoms we got to order and then the waiting really started we were totally ignored and saw no one for at least an hour - when trying after a long wait to go to the bar to get more water and more drinks I was ignored. I appreciate the waiter was on the phone but afterwards disappeared. Meanwhile loads of takeaways were picked up and kept being brought out of the kitchen. Why take our business if too busy to actually serve us. I did after an hour ask if the food was coming as we had a 12 year old with us we’re getting tired and the wait ridiculous. I wax told ‘coming soon ‘ no apology no pleasantness, on the contrary the waiter seemed to go out of his way all night to be rude to us. Not once did anyone in all the time we sat there just come and apologise or ask if we were ok or needed more drinks etc ( most of us drinking water so just a jug refill ) when the food eventually came it was dumped down without a word not even to say what was what. The vindaloo was not authentically hot as I had asked it to be. My son has had it many times before there and the staff know and as I asked he does enjoy it properly spiced instead of made mild. We just wanted to eat and pay. The only time the waiter spoke to us was to tell me sister that she should leave either 15perceny tip or 12 etc he didn’t even ask if we had enjoyed our meal or apologise for how long it had taken. Just asked for a tip. Mr sister is a generous tipper but for probably the first time in her life didn’t want to tip just rudeness throughout the night that had ruined a meal that was close to £200 as there were six of us. She tried to compromise as she was embarrassed at the waiter telling her to tip and said she would round it up. The waiter became even more surly and told her not to bother. We left. No goodnight no thank you from the staff just what seemed to be either sneery silence or contempt and indifference. I had not seen that waiter before but I was embarrassed to have recommended it to me family. The good was good but the rudeness so appalling I would never go again and advise others to think twice they clearly couldn’t care less about their customers in the restaurant only getting the takeaways out the door. I rarely write reviews and have only ever written positive ones but it was appalling. My son was so upset as previously he has loved chatting to the staff and having them be impressed he can eat a vindaloo and now is confused as to why the man hated us so much and was so rude to him and his family

Dined in, six people total, August 2023. We had to wait an inordinate amount of time for our main course to arrive (on a not so busy Monday evening) with no explanation, apology or positive gesture whatsover. We noticed they seemed to prioritise takeaway orders over dine in customers. The guy with the square glasses that served us was arrogant, bordering on rude actually. He even had the audacity to ask for a 10 to 15% tip when handling the bill payment! Unbelievable! Whilst the food was fine, the service was absolutely apalling - therefore we will never return.

Last Friday night we decided to order from this takeaway, as we have done on many occasions. However, on this occasion when I took a mouthful of my chicken jalfrezi, I felt something quite strange on my tongue. I spat this out immediately, to find only what i could describe as a cooked mouse!!!!! I rang the takeaway (not for a replacement, as I will never order from them again!!) to speak to them about getting a refund or some kind of acknowledgment, only to be hurled abuse down the phone!! In my 40 years of visiting restaurants and ordering takeaways, I have never received such denial and rudeness when ever I've complained....Not that I've ever found a mouse in my food before!!!! They made me feel like i was the one who had done something wrong! Will never recommend this place to anyone - think again if you're thinking of coming/ordering from here!

We were really looking forward to coming here for our date night but we had the most surreal experience. We ordered our drinks and popadoms and all went well. The waiter then came to take our order, we ordered 3 starters and was very much looking forward to eating them. At this particular point we weren’t sure how much room we’d have left after eating these so reluctantly ordered mains. However, the waiter said we had to order the mains at the same time as the starters as there was a minimum food charge of £20pp… even though I’ve never heard of this in my life, I offered to pay the £20pp if we spent less than that. Apparently it was company policy that they couldn’t do that. We said surely it’s about the customer experience, to which he said it’s not, it’s about about our experience. We decided to pay and leave. Will not be visiting here again. Waiters were very rude and said they were too busy to discuss our problem. We were 2 of 4 people in the restaurant at that time! We definitely would not recommend this restaurant - customer service is shocking!!

Lovely food but the meal was ruined by the waiter who was bordering on rude and we had to ask for everything twice. Quite pricey for an Indian restaurant especially the alcohol (£28 for the cheapest house wine).

We (all 18 of us) were here for pre ordered dinner. We received a warm welcome on arrival and were quickly served with drinks while the kitchen staff wee busy preparing our meals. The food was extremely tasty and served piping hot and by the looks of everyone's plates, also thoroughly enjoyable ! Thank you, we all had a lovely evening

I never enjoy leaving a poor review - but on this occasion feel I need to. We ate at the Rajpoot early evening on the 11th April and have to say that we found the meal disappointing in the extreme. The onion bargee was overcooked and dry. The curries totally lacking in taste and flavour. The only highlight was the papadoms which were hot crisp and enjoyable. Maybe we were just unlucky to be there on an off-day - but shall we be going back?.... sadly no. Sherborne is a lovely town with many fine restaurants - but would benefit from a greater variety of good ethnic ones.

Excellent food. Unlike many Indian restaurants the meat dish was actually packed with generous amount of meat, and not devoid of it. Waiter friendly, front of house / manager less so which was disappointing. I will however, be returning and hope for more inviting experience.

Ordered king prawns take away paid extra money but when i got home only cheap fresh water prawns so paid over the top. They also do not offer delivery service as internet states. Madras was like soup with chunks of chicken used too be good but gone down hill dramatically will not be ordering any more food from there anymore.

Been here several times before and been generally disappointed but pleasantly surprised on this first post-lockdown visit. Really good food all round and very friendly staff.

It didn't look like much from the outside, but we were so impressed by this place. We were a party of four, and we were all really happy with our meals. Food was brilliantly flavoured and the service was excellent. The best curry I've had in a long time and would definitely return next time I'm in the area.
