A welcoming and friendly pub which serves a decent range of beers and spirits, good food and a brilliant Sunday lunch roast. A rugby fans pub where internationals and rugby union premiership are regularly shown and occasionally European football. Its got a comfortable seating area long bar and booths and very easy parking. Lovely family team and they love a bit of banter and friendly chat with their customers. Highly recommended.

A very unfortunate experience (our first and last I'm sorry to say). Ordered fish and chips x 2 but there was absolutely no fish inside a lump of batter on my daughter's plate and mine only slightly better. Very greasy batter and "hollow puffs" of chips with the taste of stale olive oil on the dressing of a quartered cherry tomato & limp lettuce leaf. Once brought to the manager's attention, however, asking for a refund he said not to pay for it. I ended up paying £20 for my meal and two drinks which included £5 tip as I felt very embarrassed about the need to complain. Cannot recommend I'm afraid. Service however was friendly and quick.

We went for Sunday roast as a family of five and it was excellent. The choice of three meats and large selection of vegetables were all well cooked and delicious. It’s an excellent idea to have a choice of three plate sizes, all a very good size for each. The desserts were also very tasty. However, we thought the ambience was let down by allowing a rather scruffy young man wearing a hoodie,as if he was outside, to serve customers. Not a good impression!

Had not been for a while and looking for a quiet lunch. We arrived and was asked what we wanted and then the bar staff promptly walked away to clear away glasses The place looked tired with no atmosphere . Light bulbs were broken in the ceiling. The Christmas menu had last years date on. Then manager was ranting in the restaurant to someone in the kitchen. Only a couple of tables with customers eating. Looks like the locals choose to spend time elsewhere, except the working guys in for a pint after work at the bar. Saving grace was the food. It was prompt, ( no one else in to order at the same time) hot , and nicely presented. Not a lot of choice of beers on tap. Overall very disappointed. It used to be a really nice pub.

Chose the Poet for my wife's birthday, it was a very quiet Tuesday evening but still there were a number of people dining there. Food is always freshly prepared and both of our meals were excellent. We often drop in for a drink when out walking in Poundbury and we also had their Christmas menu there this year which was also really good. Well worth giving the Poet a try, they are closed on Mondays. The owners and staff are really friendly people. If you want the Sunday carvery it is definitely best to book a table, it is really popular,

We had not been to the Poet Laureate for a while, and were looking forward to a drink and a meal there with friends. What a disappointment it was. The main problem was the service (or lack of!). When we arrived nobody asked for our food order (despite us being given menus and saying we wanted to eat) and when we queried this the barman said he thought the barmaid (who had actually left the premises!) had taken our order. The food was fine - well cooked with good portions, but unfortunately we had to send a pint of beer back as it was undrinkable (this was immediately changed). To add insult to injury as we were leaving the landlord was rather rude about a coat one of our party was wearing - totally unnecessary and totally inappropriate. I used to use this pub regularly - it was vibrant, welcoming and somewhere pleasant to go for an evening drink. It is very sad indeed to see how it has gone downhill, and how it is now lacking in both customer care and atmosphere. It is very easy to gain a bad reputation but very difficult to get a good one back. Sad.

One friend had the same-ditto all comments and my other friend had ham egg and chips- lovely and good portion of chips. We were on a limited time so didn’t get a chance to sample the puds or look at the choice but I’m sure it would all be as good as our meals. The staff were happy to answer questions regarding food intolerances . We will definitely be returning next time we visit family in the area. I would advise pre booking a table. Just a pub, thought it was going to be posh or rather good food, nothing special, food ok, not the best not the worst. Pub food, didn't have everything on the specials board, didn't have correct veg as per the menu, green veg boiled up and didn't have much taste, broccoli was brown, and over cooked, didn't eat it and never asked if everything was ok, you'd think you'd get asked, should you send the extra broccoli ordered back untouched 🤣Atmosphere not great, staff pretty decent and ok. Don't think I'd recommend or return, as wasn't that great, just ok. Best think my pint of pineapple and lemonade was a good ratio. Mediocre in my opinion.

Very poorly equipped accommodation, cold room, bathroom very outdated. No bathmat stiff old towels, little space to put anything. It said on advert that breakfast & a coffee machine was provided. No breakfast. One old tea bag in a jar. Only packet’s of coffee no decaf. You have to go to bar & ask for milk, which then stands out all night, some sugar in a bowl with no cover & no teaspoon. Bed reasonably comfortable, but imagine if it was winter would be cold. Tv had no remote control so you had to get out of bed to turn the volume up or down. Had to ask for a key to lock the room when we went out. Also when you leave in mornings, you have to let yourself out a side door. As the pub staff are not up till later!! Not worth £100!

Was told on arrival it was a scaled down Sunday lunch menu as they only had one chef, one waitress and one bar person. This was ample as the place was almost empty and got even quieter. Dinner arrived looking very unappetising. Frozen Yorkshire, hard cauliflower, grey fatty beef, I like mine quite rare, very hard roast potatoes, like they had been cooked but kept warm for a long time. Gravy and carrots were OK but the cabbage, I think it was, was a pale mush . Only 3 choices of pudding which the waitress had to get the blackboard. Surely you can remember 3 items! Halway through my dinner a started to choke on a piece of hard potatoe. Not one member if staff helped me, I ran to the loo and tried to dislodge it but to no avail luckily, a lady came into the loo, saw my distress and got her medic husband. Thank goodness for him. He sent out for water. Eventually it moved and I went back to my table, not wanting the rest of my dinner obviously. Not one member of sraff asked me if I was OK. Needless to say we will not be going again. £17 ! Shocking price for awful food!
