Raja Tandoori in North Hertfordshire

Had a lovely meal here with family. Lovely, tasty food. Very very busy but it was a Sat.night and that made it very noisy. Tables a bit too cramped together but will certainly go again.

This was our first visit to this delightful Indian restaurant in Knebworth & we were so shocked we hadn't tried sooner! The service was outstanding. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with excellent service. The food was so delicious. We ordered Garlic Chilli Chicken/Chicken Balti. Would highly recommend

The food was reasonably priced. The food was nice. However, the staff were, rude and disorganised. When you go out for a meal with family and friends, you catch up on lots of things to talk about. Literally six members of staff came to our table asking us what we wanted to order within the first five minutes of arriving. I don’t know what’s on their menu and I’d like to look at their menu but felt pressured in having to choose something because they were literally standing at the table waiting for us and not letting us enjoy our evening. Food was good. Tables were small and cramped. Staff really should consider how they treat their customers. I won’t be coming back which is a pity.

Even though we booked last minute the restaurant did everything to accommodate us. We had a wonderful meal with excellent service. I highly recommend if you enjoy great service and good curry

Have had takeaways from here quite often and tonight's was awful . Didn't even taste as it was supposed to Wont be ordering from here again and its not exactly cheap

Lived near for 25 yrs. been to many Indian/Tandoori restaurants. Many good ones but Raja tops it for me and my family and friends I have taken there. Food is always great. All staff are good and friendly. I’d give it more than 5!!!!

I went with a friend to this restaurant and had a lovely dinner. The food was tasty and served with attention and a smile. I enjoyed the paneer starter and the bindi with garlic naan. The parking was convenient and outside the restaurant. I would definitely go back again.

I have been to this restaurant many times over the years and cannot fault it in any way. Not sure why I haven’t placed a review before! The staff are friendly, attentive and nothing is too much trouble, the food is second to none. The waiter Naz is very much a people person, one of the dishes I thought I might have was medium but as my digestion isn’t very good with spicy food he requested it was mild for me in the kitchen. I do not know anywhere else where you would get such a personal service. He always remembers what my husband likes and will always advise if we are not sure on dishes etcetera. Thank you to all the staff especially Naz.

We enjoyed our evening at the Raja. The food was excellent particularly the Persian style biriyani. Service in a very busy restaurant is excellent. One small criticism is I prefer a blush rose wine. The dark rose wine they serve is sweet. I think they'd sell loads of the more popular light blush if they sold it which is an ideal wine for Asian food. Everything you eat is of a very good quality.

Whilst we arrived later than expected, the waiter was kind enough to let us eat in, as we really didn’t want a takeaway and had travelled quite far to get to the restaurant. Once seated, the service was prompt and friendly. The special mixed grill was absolutely outstanding, with high quality ingredients. The waiter was quick when we needed him but didn’t hassle us. The food is some of the best Indian food you can find in Hertfordshire.

After driving past this restaurant many times we finally found the time to go for a meal with another couple of friends. It’s a lot bigger inside than expected. The staff were so welcoming and were humerus throughout the night. Very attentive. The food was really nice and we liked it the we were asked if we were ready for our next course. We will definitely be back

Fantastic. Can’t fault it for service and quality of food. Good value too. Every dish prepared and served nice and hot and waiting staff always attentive and considerate.

Hurrah !. After complaints about over charging, the owner seems to have reduced his prices - slightly. Side dishes are still too high, but any reduction in cost is to be welcomed. The food is consistently good, and the staff are lovely, but there is still scope for better value. If prices were dropped a little further I would have no hesitation in recommending the Raja as the best curry restaurant in ther area. However at a time when consumers have less money in their pocket, value is king. Not sure the Raja has got there just yet.

Total rip off on drinks! Charged 4.95 for a glass of lime & soda. Should be max of 1.20. Food was ok but not much flavour / bit bland. Also waiter snatched bill off me when I had paid as he could see me querying what was on there. Took it back to bar to give me a copy then conveniently lost it!! Avoid having drinks in here as per other reviews as total rip off!!!

Best Indian takeaway by far . Shame they don’t deliver but well worth the wait . Would recccomend to anyone

Prawn curry - £16 !. Side dishes £5 each - every other restaurant charges around £3.50. And a bottle of Cobra beer for £6 !!! Yes, £6 for a bottle of beer ! . And the same for a bottle of sparkling water !!! The main meals are priced reasonably, lulling you into a false sense of value. But just watch the bill rocket when you order the extras - which everyone does without checking. Very sneaky. Such a shame to see a good little restaurant ruined by greed.

What can I say, never had a bad meal here both eating in and takeaway. Came Friday and was greeted with the normal amazing service and could not fault the food. Would recommend to anyone local or passing.

Had a take away this evening chicken balti and chicken pathia been having this for a long time tonight for some reason it was as hot as hell whats gone on guvner do you have a new chef couldn't really eat it.

Went here with the family yesterday. Food was absolutely delicious, flavoursome and fresh. Everyone was happy with their meals. I no longer live locally, but this was the best Indian meal I have had in years! Service was also excellent. Friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

I visited here with friends on a Wednesday and it was busy. That says a lot. It was the usual good service and attention. We settled for a bottle of the house white and red and we all said very drinkable. One of our party was on a dairy free diet and the staff were knowledgable and advised against the chicken tikka and recommend the plain chicken instead. A very tasty meal followed by 4 coffees (good) On departure they brought our coats and escorted us to the door and held the door open for us (nice touch)

Visited Raga Tandoori after a family visit , Excellent starters Shami kebab and sheikh kebab , Main course Lamb Dhansak , Pilau rice , Saag aloo , really good ,one of the best Indians in the area , thanks , sorry we missed Naz , see you again soon ..

Was recommended by a friend found it very disappointing, got a take way all the sauces where the same tomato based, chicken was dry and cauliflowr bargee more sauce than cauliflower

This place never fails to deliver, Naz and his team are always welcoming and the atmosphere is friendly and warm. We had the papadums as starters followed by korma for my wife and tikka Boona for my father in law and I had the Raj Lamb all with plain rice and Garlic Naan. The lamb was amazing, succulent and very tasty can’t tell you what was in it as it was the chefs secret recipe. Other meals also were of a high standard. The naan was a tad on the doughy side though, but all round very satisfying and will be back before we leave.

My family and I have been going to the Rajah ever since it opened many years ago and we have rarely been disappointed. I say "rarely"because on occasions when they have been really busy te food has not been as thermally hot as I would have wanted, but, as I say, it has been a rare occurrence.I believe that it has maintained it's quality because the owner, Mr Myrh (sorry, I think i have not spelled your name correctly), is frequently in the restaurant and therefor ensures that the high standard is maintained.

Visited here last night with family, as we have been coming to the restaurant for 27 years we were warmly greeted and quickly shown to our table which we had pre booked, and even on a Thursday night the restaurant was surprisingly very busy! The naan bread and mains were all piping hot and tasted wonderful! Staff as always an absolute pleasure and worked well to accommodate us with our large order, cannot rate this restaurant highly enough, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and excellent service!

I have been coming to this restaurant in Knebworth for ~27yrs (initially it was only take away back in 1990’s). I have never been disappointed about quality or choice. They prepare many dishes but I have Chicken Morissa which is superb. The Naans are very fluffy and tasty. The service is better than 10/10 and they will accommodate any requests. Yes there are cheaper alternatives a few miles away in Stevenage but this restaurant is consistent in the excellent quality of food, service & dishes available.

Lived in North Herts for years. Tried many places. Always come back to this one. Friendly and welcoming. Food good to great. Maybe not the cheapest, but do you REALLY want a cheap curry?

After reading top notch reviews of Raja Tandoori, we headed for this Indian restaurant. It was very short uber drive from Stevenage – place where I was staying. Place was fairly large and moderately crowded. But as evening grew on us, it became more and more busy. Setting was sober and easy.

Friendly welcome but it did help one in our party knew the young waiter. The food was tasty if a little expensive. Good atmosphere, clean establishment no problems.

Very over priced for an average quality meal. Very disappointed! I could have got the same order 6 miles away for £5.00 less at least. I feel ripped off.

We have lived in knebworth over twenty years and have never been let down by this great restaurant. High quality food and attentive staff with first class service always.

The staff are absolutely brilliant, their is many classic indian dishes which might suit your palette, they are also very friendly and welcoming, they served my family quickly and efficiently and we had little to no issues with any of the food. the restaurant itself is very well lit and is always busy in the evenings proving just how brilliant and popular this place is, been coming here my entire life and will always return for the best indian in hertfordshire!

I have been coming to this Restaurant on a fairly regular basis over the past few years. It has always provided good food and service and the latest visit was no exception. our party chose a variety of Main Courses and accompaniments which were eaten with enthusiasm. The general level of 'heat' for their dishes is perhaps slightly lower than similar establishments, but perhaps all the better for that as unfamiliar dishes can be explored. I do know that if you ask them for more 'heat' they can provide it !

When my girlfriend lived in Knebworth this was our regular little treat. Great prices, great food, great service, great value.

I ordered a takeaway Friday night just gone and it was so awful! I have only got takeaway from here once before (end of 2018) and it was outstanding (hot, tasty, meat was tender, spicy, did I mention hot - temperature wise).

Really disappointing. Waited for a takeaway, but it was only tepid when I opened it at home 5 mins later. The chicken dansak had no flavour or heat at all and the Bombay potatoes just tasted of potatoes in gravy. My wife cannot normally eat these as they are too hot for her. She tasted them and said they were completely bland.

Made good sense previously; representing good value for money with above average food, but with a new menu and a considerable price rise, it started to feel tired and over priced.

Like most 'Indian' restaurants, this one is actually Bangladeshi. Its food tends to be only moderately spiced and thus generally in tune with British tastes. While the quality of the dishes here is very good, I found them somewhat bland in comparison to those enjoyed on frequent visits to India. Perhaps I should have asked for a side dish of chillies! The service is, however, excellent - friendly and speedy, while hassle-free.

I spent over £20 for a take away and I threw almost all of it in the bin!

Years ago this was our local, and we considered ourselves very lucky to have such a good restaurant on our doorstep. Then we moved to Norfolk, but this is still the best we know of - great food, nice room, lovely staff and a great place to meet up with old friends from Knebworth.

We came for a meal to celebrate my daughter passing her driving test. It was excellent and very tasty.

We turned up at 7:30pm on Saturday night, without a booking. The waiter found us the last table. The service was quick and efficient.

Have used Raja for years and years and sadly the menu has now been changed to reflect a huge increase in prices. Mixed grill has now gone from £12.95 to £16.00! Making the price simply unaffordable for many. Shame as great tasting food and lovely environment, but as previous menu was already priced at a premium and customers were not ever offered complimentary drinks at end, looks like we will now have to take business elsewhere.

Tasty food. Great service. Local person. Always happy to feast there. Healthier options available. Try a view starters as a main if you’re vegan.

Regularly eat here, and in fact come to Knebworth from Hitchin (10 Miles) as I find this one of the best restaurants in the area. Decor is more traditional than the current trend for Indian restaurants to resemble a cafe, and this provides a quality feel to the ambience. Staff are efficient and welcoming, and food is always top quality. Only downside is the restaurant does get very busy on a Fridays and Saturdays, so clearly they are doing something right. Highly recommended.

Ordered a takeaway with friends. Two of them have significant allergies to several things, and rarely order takeaway, so we made that very clear on the order.

We visited for dinner on my daughters birthday, and again a couple of weeks later when our other daughter returned from abroad. This has been something of a family favorite for many years and although we have tried other Indian restaurants, nothing really compares. Just great Indian food in a nice environment with excellent staff. Why go anywhere else!

When you enter this Indian Restaurant , you think it is small but it goes right back. My son and daughter in law have recently moved to the area and we were recomended this Indian, truly didn't disappoint in any way. Six of us ordered all different dishes and shared all, the Chicken Dansak was the best chicken I have ever eaten, the aubergines were superb,. The entire restaurant was full by 7 on a sat night, and you can see why. Hope the chefs never leave as we will be back soon. Service was very attentive , many waiters but they were all needed.

I was told that this restaurant understands gluten free, when we got there and explained, I was put at ease, the service was very good, they were friendly and helpful, the meal was really nice, it is very popular and filled up quickly

Great food, friendly staff who will explain any dish for you, they will also adapt any dish for your needs - I would advise to book as it does get very busy. we will be coming back - parking is outside or in a public car park behind the COOP Supermarket

I just keep hearing rave reviews about this restaurant and from people I trust so I had to make another visit to see if I was wrong and....well sort of..

We have been here a few times before and always order more than we can eat because it's all delicious and great value. The waiters are very attentive and great at witty banter during moments of service interaction, but aren't intrusive. Total bill came to just over £20 for two very full tummys and everything tasted great. Will be back again.

Considering I live within 2 miles of this place I’m surprised I’ve never been till now. Food tasted nice, service was acceptable and the decor of the room is good. Could do with some music on in the background to add to the ambience but it’s not a deal breaker to return again. Menu’s aren’t shown online anywhere from what I could find but the prices were very competitive with other curry places. Bill was around £60 between 3 of us and we could barely finish what we ordered as we were full which isn’t a bad thing.

I use the raja at least twice a month, other restaurants vary, the raja is always consistent. Food is always great, staff friendly.... love it!!!!!

Phoned on Wednesday to see if they opened for lunch on Friday as we wanted to combine a long walk with a hearty meal. We had walked past this place when we stopped at another shop in the High Street at the weekend and the smells were good. When I phoned I was told yes they were open for lunch Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. I said that we would see them on Friday then. We walked for 70 mins at some pace to get there today and arrived at 12.20 feeling hungry. The door had a Closed sign showing. However, it was open so we went in and the man inside said that they were closing in 5 mins!! He said they were all off to the mosque together. So here we were in Knebworth, on foot, needing food and no other real alternative. So we had to walk back another 30 mins to a pub we had passed on the way. What a complete shambles. Definitely won't be making any further journeys to this establishment.

We are very fortunate to live in Knebworth as the Raja is our local. We usually get take aways and its not often we are all in. With the snow on the ground we were all at home the same time so we decided to go for a meal. We were welcomed on arrival and made to feel at home straight away and my girls treated like Royalty after all the staff have looked after us since they were babies. The food was excellent and freshly prepared full of flavour and piping hot. We have never been disappointed. Will be back next week.

The title says it all. I like Indian food and have eaten in lots of Indian restaurants. This is the second time we have been and both times the food has been much hotter than I would expect. If you imagine food coming in three heat levels mild, medium and hot. I found that the food is either medium or just plain hot, no mild apart from the poppadoms. That's the only negative, everything else is excellent. Staff were friendly, quick and efficient, the surroundings were modern and tastefully done. The food once you ignore the heat was tasty. So if you don't mind it being very spicy then I would recommend it.

Took old friends from out of town to the Raja. As usual the service, food and even sense of occasion were reliably good as usual. Some nearby pub restaurants vary greatly on what kind of experience happens from one visit to the next, the Raja is always the same. I enjoyed the house Raja Chicken & sampled several other items, everything hit the mark. We didn't buy alcohol we ordered only tap water, the waiters accepted this gratefully.

Visited at 6pm on a Saturday, it was very quiet but quickly filled up.The food and service here is top notch.The staff are friendly and always really well dressed so gives a professional feel.The restaurant is a lot bigger than it looks on the outside but the only downside is lack of parking on the street outside.Not worth missing for that though as it's the best curry for miles around.
