Gone the way of everything that was ever good in Soho. Previously a perfectly serviceable curry in a handy location, but tried to visit last night and it's boarded up, kaput, no more. Probably a jeans shop or a 'fashionable burger joint' by the time you read this. RIP Raj.

The popadom and pickles were delicious. The tandoori chicken starter was a bit a average. But the Rogan Josh and Pilau Rice were superb. Good service. Certainly not like the top end London Indian restaurants, but much better than average. Recommended

Sometimes, staying in London for a while and craving Indian food can be not so bad with a good mix of Indian restaurants available. The Vindaloo curry was the best that I have ever tasted, lovely Traditional Vindaloo Curry, Tandoori King Prawns tasty full of flavour with fantastic white onions. Biryani was excellent and spicy.

Took dinner at this restaurant this evening having been coming here for many years - albeit as I live in Singapore not so frequently nowadays. We were greater like family and felt a true and hearty welcome. Ordered a lamb biriani which was excellent - far too large for me, and a side order of peas and cheese. Excellent quality, served nice and hot and a complimentary drink for no doubt our continued patronage. This is a very friendly restaurant which I would highly recommend.

After some shopping in Oxford Street, 3 of us went in search for a Indian restaurant near oxford street. We visited the restaurant on 17th October 2017. We wanted a restaurant that wasn't a typical chain type restaurant. The atmosphere was nice, there was a few other people there and the music at the background did make nice ambience. I ordered Tandoori Chicken with naan, and a Chicken Biryani The Tandoori chicken was really nice and authentic, the chicken piece was really big and tender and not oily. The Naan bread that accompanies the tandoori chicken, is thick and really soft, This is exactly how both of these should be. The chicken biryani was absolutely amazing, I will definitely go back for this. Overall, I can say that the food and customer service was good, the place is a gem in Soho. I will recommend this place if your looking for a authentic indian food experience.

I stumbled upon this cosy restaurant in the midst of soho amongst streets and streets of hipster restaurants. Everywhere else was crowded but this place was empty. I decided to go with my gut and didn't regret it. The food was lovely and spicy, delicious chana masala and saag paneer. As soon as I'd entered, many others followed. Despite recent reviews I noticed on here, this place is tasty, cheap for central London and independent. The customer service wasn't great but no problem, I'd go back here in a shot when I'm next in the area.

I visited this restaurant with two friends who fancied an 'Indian', We almost walked out as the greeting was so unfriendly. I ordered a poppadum which came plain, extras are charged for - be warned! As we had eaten a late lunch, we ordered a selection of vegetable side dishes - there are no decent veggie options on the main menu except vegetable biryani - rather than mains which was commented on and the service got even more cursory. The brinjal bhaji was actually quite nice. If you can, avoid the loo - at the top of the stairs - I came down trying not to touch anything.

I went here with a friend on 12/10/2017 for lunch. A few red flags should’ve warned us to stay away from it, much to our own detriment. The place was empty. The ambience was lacking. The waiter was unenthusiastic and did not to care. Despite all this I thought the tripadvisor (very misleading!) mark of quality posted out the door would sway my thoughts. I ordered a starter, main, rice and naan bread. While the food portions were small, the real offender was the appalling quality. I have tried a number of authentic Indian restaurants before and never have I tasted anything so bland in my life. The food was obviously leftovers from a few nights ago and re-microwaved to warm up. To rate this 4/5 stars would be akin to awarding McDonald’s 3* in the Michelin guide. I cannot stress how disgusting this was; fried rat droppings would taste better than this. I don’t bother writing reviews unless something is clearly out-of-line, and this was hands down the worst place I have ever eaten in London. Stay away! You have been warned!

I want people out there to be educated in relation to this restaurant from someone who does eat and enjoy's high quality Indian food.... From the quality of the food to presentation to the service at hand, this restaurant is absolutely terrible, and I made a grave mistake to enter the premises on 12 October 2017. My friend's meal looked and 'tasted' like it had been microwaved - using ingredients prepared many days ago. The paneer (cottage cheese) that I had was so rubber like and foul that i managed a piece. The paratha equally so. The waiter came over and took back the dishes without asking or understanding why i had decided to leave 95% of the meal I had purchased. To conclude, I am genuinely looking out for you the customers out there - do not waste your time or money in coming to this place.

Wanted a fairly traditional "curry house" meal in the evening. The place was deserted when we arrived, and there are lots of trendier/more modern restaurants all around in Soho, so not surprising that people walk by. But the staff were friendly and helpful and the food, whilst nothing special, was all well-cooked and perfectly fine. Got busier, not surprisingly, with people coming from the pub. It's that sort of place.

There's an excellent menu to suit every taste, & the food was well-prepared, tasty & prompt. There's a very homely ambience too, with authentic Indian music in the background - & we had a nice table by the window where we could watch the world go by outside. All in all, a very good experience, & a restaurant that outstrips many others nearby which seem to be run by faceless chains.Highly recommended, & very reasonably priced too.

I originally went out for lunch, which ran on a bit, so needed a bit of grub later in the evening. One of the group had been to this place many times before so led from the front (Pied Piper of food style) and took us to the Raj. The staff here are very friendly and can't do enough to make sure you enjoy yourself. Drinks arrived right away along with a pile of poppadoms and the requisite relishes. I was recommended the tandoori king prawns (not on the menu but don't let that stop you!) and they were fabulous. Piles of flavour helped along with a Cobra! I tucked in on a little shashlik chicken, Bombay potato, some rice and loved it all. I dipped my peshwari naan into some korma sauce and the experience was complete. It doesn't look much from outside and the decor is a bit tired but it makes up for this with a lovely atmosphere and fabulous food. At about £25 per head it is decent value, and sure there is better in this part of town, but if you need an impromptu curry this place won't disappoint.

We were seven but they arranged a table for us and we could directly seat. The place was small, cosy and calm and the service was very fast. The food was delicious and not too spicy. We ordered chicken curry, butter chicken, lamb massala, rice and naan and everything was delicious. And because we were a majority of students they offered us 10% on the bill. The only thing maybe is the bathroom which was a bit too dirty. So I (we) totally recommend it even with a small budget.

Been to Raj Tandoori a number of times now, and it's 'nice', without being mind-blowing. It's in an excellent location, right in the heart of town, and the prices aren't ridiculous. Was £20 a head when we split out bill. Menu is good. Not too complicated, and everything is explained for those who don't know what to order. I went for an aubergine dish, which was a dry-ish curry. Ate the whole lot and was pretty nice - but the pilau rice I ordered was a little tasteless, and the aubergine was a bit overdone. Recommend getting Naan instead of rice. Could have done with a bit more flavour. I had bits and pieces of others' food. Lentil dish was very nice as was Saag Aloo, but it really didn't stand out compared to other Indians. If you're in the area it's worth going, but don't go out your way. The restaurant itself is a bit run down. Very small and cramped, and it looks like it was last done up in the mid 1990s.Staff were very friendly and attentive, and service was in general pretty quick. It's a nice place to eat but not much more than that.

We were unable to get in at another Indian restaurant we had planned to visit so we googled the nearest Indian and found this place. Granted it's not very appealing from the outside and I would never think to go here, I would just walk past in any other circumstance but couldn't knock the food. We were served in good time all the food was hot and very flavoursome. Portion sizes just right. Bit disappointed with the garlic nan, quite dry and small but overall we were impressed. The toilets were very off putting but clean so can't complain. Could seriously do with a change in decor and some refurb upstairs. Decent price too in comparison to other Indians nearby.

I would definitely recommend this on the Tastecard deal. Two starters and mains for the price of one. The food did not reinvent the wheel but was very good- decent portions, fragrant curries and tender meat. The setting was a bit drab and the waiters did not come across as very welcoming. However, once we got speaking to them they seemed nice. I believe they were just a bit shy and perhaps not that comfortable with speaking English.

I picked this place because it was on the tastecard list of restaurants, no other reason than this and I won't be going back, not because I had an awful experience or terrible food but just because there are better places to eat than here. The look of the restaurant isn't very appealing and the bathrooms are awful. The food was ok, I had the Lamb Dupiaja (lamb in gravy), not strong in taste or flavour but maybe that's just how it's meant to be. Unfortunately you can't use the tastecard here in December, which I didn't realise until I asked for the bill so ended up being a bit of a disappointment.

Midweek evening meal after drinks at The Village. My mate fancied a curry as his partner won't go for Indian meals. We had a couple of bottles of Cobra beer and they were ideal for the food. He had a prawn puri and I had the mixed starter. Both well prepared and fresh. For mains he had lamb Bhuna and I had chicken Salazar (?never had that before). All starter and main courses were well prepared in the traditional English tandoori restaurant style which was just what we were looking for. Neither of us have been to such a restaurant in London for a long time. They all seem to have gone boutique and have words like "cuisine" in the title which doesn't seem Indian to me at all. Attentive servers who know what they're doing. In fact no one came round to check if we were enjoying the meal BECAUSE THEY COULD TELL we were enjoying it without having to bother us by asking. Good value for the area and had a spicy tea. Coffee is "instant" so we went to The Kings Arms for a nightcap after that. Good honest fayre and on leaving I discovered one of the waiters lives two streets from me! How cool is that. Tipped over ten % and all were happy.

The menu offers a great choice and isn't filled with fancy over-elaborate dishes, it.s just a good original Indian menu. When the food arrived it was served good and hot and tasted really good. Quantity was every bit as good as the quality. So to summarise looks can be deceiving. The food was uninspiring. I found it bland, and lacking in flavour with minimal meat. I notice other reviews have said small portion sizes. I found the portion sizes to be perfectly fine for the price and location so no complaints there. I eat a lot and was very full when I left! The staff were very friendly, attentive, and efficient. I cannot fault them. The interior was a bit shabby, dark, and without good lighting. It certainly needs a bit of a 'freshen up'. I was the only diner so there wasn't much of an 'atmosphere' to comment on.The toilets I found quite worrisome - they are located outside of the restaurant on the top floor. So, you must exit the restaurant and do a quick turn, and go up some steep stairs of the building that are in a very poor state of repair (damaged, old, and dirty). Here you will find a tiny toilet that is equally as rickety and dirty. I am surprised it is allowed, if I'm honest. Which is why, whilst writing this review, I decided to check the restaurant's food hygiene rating by Environmental Health. They have scored extremely low with a '1' rating with "major improvements necessary". And this was just recently carried during the month of March.I am disappointed to have to rate this place so low given that the staff member who served me was so lovely but I'm afraid I can't.

My husband and I have been regular visitors to this restaurant since the early 70s when we both worked in London, as youngsters and when Berwick Street was far less salubrious than it now is :)It used to be called the Islamabad and has always been owned by the same family who run it with love and care. It's great to visit and old favourite, when back in London, to find that it is still as good as ever. The owner still recognises us and makes a fuss of us even after a couple of years' absence. Makes us feel very good; but, of course our expectations are still very high. Again we were not disappointed. This excellent Indian restaurant has always been popular with local residents and office workers in the area. It is always pretty busy but particularly in the early evening, when people pop in with friends after a day at the office. Tourists will not be disappointed either; it's well worth a visit. We particularly enjoy the Rogan Josh, the Chicken Dopiaza and the aloo gobi; however all food on the menu is very good indeed. White cloth napkins and table cloths have always been a nice touch!

This is a nice and unpretentious little Indian restaurant. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and the food there is delicious.I'm used to spicy food, but when they tell you that the Chicken Vindaloo is spicy, take it for granted.

My daughter and I wanted to try Indian food in London and discovered this small Indian Restaurant in Soho. The restaurant was quite busy and we only wanted takeaway. the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is not the best Indian we have had but it was quite tasty and plentiful and reasonable price by London standards.

This place advertises a £6.50 set lunch with sides and rice, so naturally I decided to try it since that's a pretty good deal for Soho. When the meal came, however, I was very disappointed to find just 4 small pieces of lamb in my madras - I had to order another full curry because I was still hungry.2 stars for bad advertising, though the food was alright.

Dined there 30th August. My wife's chicken tikka massala was brown instead of bright red and my chicken biryani was nearly vegetarian it had so little chicken in it.The spoonful of veg curry to accompany it was disgusting. All in all not very good at all.

Have been eating here for many years and never had a bad meal. There is a meal for everyone here including halal and vegetarians - great selection.Staff always greet returning diners with a warm welcome. Restaurant sometimes get busy later in the evening so maybe best to book in advance, otherwise turn up and if they are busy ask them to call you when they have a free table and go have a beer in a nearby bar.Guests are usually served a complimentary popadom on arrival and given the menu which is extensive. Includes a chefs special selection and Achari Gosht is my favorite. All portions are generous so be care on the number of side dishes you order. Full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Very nice restaurant in the heart of Soho. Reasonably priced - fantastic service. Even if I stay in other parts of London I often pass ten or more Indian restaurants to reach this one - but the journey is always worth it,Keep up the good work!!! True welcome and fine hospitality!

We have now lunched twice at this very pleasant Indian restaurant and have thoroughly enjoyed our meals both times. It is within a few minutes walk of Oxford Circus and a relaxing place to eat a meal and rest during a busy shopping day. There is a good selection of meals varying from mild to hot and including plenty of options for a vegetarian. I particularly enjoyed the butter chicken. All the hot items are freshly prepared, swiftly produced and a good size. We were hungry and found that a shared starter. One main, two vegetable sides and a single rice and naan was more than we could finish. We did, however, find room for a kulfi each for dessert – the desserts were all of the readymade ice cream variety but nevertheless good. The total cost for the two of us was just under £40.We have every intention of going back to this restaurant on our next shopping trip to London as the friendly, efficient service, good food and convenient position make it ideal for us. The only possible disadvantage might be that the toilets were upstairs which would be a problem if you had walking difficulty.

Looks basic from the street but go in and give it a try. This place obviously has not been tempted to have botox to make it appear 21st century! Still simple with no fancy decor, but fantastic food that hits all the right spots. Expected to find it packed on a Thursday night around 8/8.30, but managed to get a table immediately with friendly and efficient service. The bill wasn't too bad, either!

Fin atmosfære i lokalet.

I started visiting the Raj with work colleagues after meetings, and have since taken friends there too, as the food is always good, and the welcome is always warm. This is a hidden gem, and whilst it may not look much from outside, it is a real hidden gem. The prawn puri is my own personal favourite dish, closely followed by the murgh tikka bhuna.

We fancied a standard Indian rather than all the fancy dishes at most of the other Indians in the vicinity we found the food was good the atmosphere was ok but the service was a little lacking this may just have been because it was a Sunday evening or maybe it is always like this, we enjoyed out food but found it to be a bit pricey although in London I guess it was standard pricing just felt a bit much when I have had better meals cheaper in my local Indian where the service is fantastic but that's just my opinion. I would say its worth trying if ou don't fancy something all fancy but just a standard meal

I always visit this place when I'm in the vicinity. The restaurant is small and tired looking but the food and atmosphere make up for this! The staff are very friendly and make you feel at home. Also the location is bang in the middle of Soho, so very handy indeed. All the dishes I've tried at Raj Tandoori have never disappointed. I enjoy going back there again and again.

Don't expect anything special, but at £7.99 for a starter, a main and bread or rice you can't go too far wrong. I had the onion bhajis and normal chicken curry with rice. The bhajis are golf ball size and are served with lemon. The chicken curry itself was a reasonable size, certainly enough for one person. Chicken was well cooked and the sauce was a chocolatey brown. Spicy but not too hot. The rice was ok and was served with a few bits of friend onion on the top.The lager is where they get you I guess, I had a bottle of Cobra which I think was over £5. One member of staff on duty but as we were the only people in there on Valentines day, it was plenty enough. He was friendly and chatty but not pushy. I explained that we would like both courses together as we were a bit pushed for time before a show. This was no problem and he ad the bill ready for us when it was time to go.Decor is drab, music was polite and unintrusive. Would recommend for a rapid, pre-show meal. Nothing showy or fancy, it is what it is.

We visited the Gunpowder Restaurant on Greek Street in Soho as part of their India Club monthly dining experience. The 6 course menu showcased Hyderabad cuisine. The Kid Goat Keema Lukhmi was excellent along with the Chicken 65, and the Kakori Mutton Seekh and the Sofiyani Dum Biryani with grilled Mirchi ka Salan. Excellent food and excellent value.

I had an incredible dining experience at Royal India in Covent Garden. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a beautifully authentic atmosphere that set the tone for a memorable meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, making excellent recommendations tailored to our tastes. The food was truly exceptional—each dish was rich, flavorful, and expertly spiced, capturing the true essence of Indian cuisine. The butter chicken was silky and packed with flavor, while the biryani was aromatic and perfectly balanced. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or just looking to try something new, Royal India is a must-visit. This is easily one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in London, and I can’t wait to return!

Average given the price. Nothing particularly bad, but given the price the food quality was about average and nothing really stood out as wow, as you would hope for somewhere charging £50/head. On the face of it the decor looks ornate and impressive, but actually when you looked closer the wood panelling looked tired, and in places may have had black mould on the edges of the mouldings. The atmosphere was also somehow cold and lacking warmth and class — it is possible this was due to a poor choice of lighting, mostly overhead and cold in temperature, and not enough side lighting and of a warmer colour temperature. It was also actually cold! It is not clear why the air conditioning would be on and set to such a low temperature in October. It was too cold for my 74 year old mother, but eventually they did provide a small space heater, which greatly improved things. The staff were friendly and helpful — i.e. with the space heater —and the manager honoured the price I was quoted online, which disagreed with the price in the menu in the restaurant.
