Raj Tandoori in Reading

Tasty curry, good portions with friendly and swift service. My veggie Dhansak was good, spicy as requested and the chicken tikka masala and pathia seemed to go down well though the chicken could have been more succulent apparently. Overall a reasonably priced, friendly local curry house in Emmer Green

Don't think we would risk trying another Indian restaurant. Always a warm welcome, tables well-presented, staff attentive, food consistently hot, delicious and not greasy and value for money. Shhh . . . don't tell everyone about this little gem! Waddington Family

My wife & I have been eating from Raj Tandoori for some time. The quality of food is consistently high (excellent) and the best in the north Reading area. As well fantastic food we have also occasionally eaten in the restaurant where the service was first class. Consistent quality of food and great service with a very competitive price giving great value for money. Highly recommended.

Recently visited here for food. Their offers on a Monday and Tuesday are great. Not the best curry I have had but by no means the worst. Unfortunately I had quite a bad case of the explosive ones for the rest of the evening.

This was perfect way to spend time while our EV was charging (although we’d added plenty of charge at the nearby Instavolt chargers before we’d finished popadoms!). Service was friendly and swift. Food was great and full of flavour. Beats a petrol station!

Right. Where do I start. Excellent service from Robbie and Ali. The two of them served up an incredible feast. Proper Bangladeshi restaurant that serves excellent grub. The Sag Paneer.. you won’t get better in Reading. Perfect blend of Spinach and Paneer cheese. The vindaloo was beautiful, the spices, the flavour, wonderful. Will definitely recommend to anyone in the Reading area. One of the best curries I’ve had in years. Caversham, emmer green, central Reading. Where ever you’re from, get over to the Raj! 5 stars

We have had regular takeaways over the past year and without exception they have been excellent. Always very tasty, ready on time and piping hot. I look forward to being able to dine in soon and I hope the local community supports this excellent restaurant.

Really disappointing. The Chicken Korma tasted like treacle and was the worst I’ve ever had. I’ve been eating Korma’s for over 30 years and it’s never tasted like that anywhere else. The menu said that we had a free coffee with the meal - when I asked for it the waiter said that the offer was no longer available as we were looking at an old menu. We were handed the menu when we arrived and it just rounded off a really frustrating experience. Definitely won’t return. The starters were OK, which is the only reason this review wasn’t a ‘terrible’.

Real fan of this place. The portion sizes are great and don’t skimp on quality either. Lots of meat, King prawns and bread! The naan bread is out of this world! So fresh. Lovely

This is one of the best, if not the best Indian Restaurants that I have visited. The starters and main courses are excellent. They ask how spicy you like your food. The prices are reasonable, we paid £41.70 for a very good meal for two

We have visited a few times as a couple and family. The food is fresh, tasty and good value. I could do with a bit more garlic, chilli and spice but appreciate this may not to be to everyone’s taste! The garlic naan was small and not very garlicky but overall a very nice meal and we would definitely recommend this restaurant.

My family and I have been coming here for over 15 years and the service and food has always been fantastic. The Raj have always been able to accommodate large tables for our family when we all get together and visit; one of our favourite places to eat.

Mi esposa y yo hemos vivido en Emmer Green durante 23 años y este ha sido nuestro restaurante indio en todo. Pero por diversas razones, aparte de las extrañas, el viernes de Pascua fue nuestra primera visita durante 18 meses más o menos. No nos decepcionó. Hacía ruido pero no estaba demasiado ocupado a las 18:30 cuando llegamos y pronto llegaron los poppadoms y la cobra habituales. El pollo bhoona valió la pena la espera y había suficiente comida para un pequeño perrito y cena el sábado. ¡No será tan largo otra vez! !

Food was very tasty and not too spicy, good vegetarian options too - try the "chana masala" absolutely delicious! There were not many beer options tho.

Have tried lots of Indian Restaurant in the local area, this is our preferred option for either take out or eating in. Family run restaurant, service always great, and very reasonably priced. Decor a little tired but look beyond that the food is fab.

Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday night - set price £10.95 for starter, main, side and rice or naan. Great value and no slacking on quality of the dishes. Great restaurant and 5 hygiene stars.

Came here for a family birthday meal,had the buffet it was lovely food and a very good price! Staff very friendly and even though they was short staffed nothing was to much trouble.

Fuimos en Domingo almuerzo para un comida en el bufé. Personal muy acogedor y atento nos mostró todos los alimentos y bebidas, pero cambiado por pan paratha que era un fresco y crujiente mit�idos como debe ser. De cebolla bhaji encantador entrantes y alas pollo tandoori, que eran magníficas, con una buena salsa de crema de menta. Buen arroz y curry de verduras incluyendo algunos excelentes Bombay Aloo, buen pollo Jalfrezi Karhai pero el Korma y era muy gruesas con coco como el tandoori, Cordero madras Massala-jeera estaba caliente, pero debería. En una muy buena comida para el almuerzo de domingo que cuestan de 17 a 90 para los dos. Valor excepcional si sólo fuimos para el alas de pollo tandoori y una paratha!

We had a lovely Sunday evening buffet here tonight. The service is very friendly and quick and the food delicious and plentiful. Good value too.

We visited today.Not worth the time,distance and effort you take to reach this place from Reading town centre. Its around 2.5 miles away from central reading. Now about the buffet. Its a very small restaurant. We walked in and saw the Buffet items in the middle. 2 starters, one onion pakoda and one chicken dry. They were good and thats it. Rest of the items were 1 rice item,1 lamb curry, 2 veg curries(only aloo),rest of the 4-5 were chicken curries. Among which 50% of chicken dishes were sweet. They serve Naan at your table. No desserts. Overall not worth the money and less options as a buffet. No more visits to this restaurant.

We've been here twice in the last two weeks. First Saturday 12 November and also the past Sunday 20 nov. On both occasions , it's been very good all round. The Saturday visit was super busy. Although we had t booked , we were allowed to stand at the bar whilst a table was organised. This Sunday was buffet night. Whilst buffets can be problematic, on this visit it was outstanding. The dishes were topped up and rotated to ensure they were hot and fresh. Service was top notch and good hot and tasty. This is our new goto place. An added bonus is that it is open on Sunday evenings.

The Raj is a small but very friendly restaurant. There is always a lively atmosphere and you're guaranteed a warm welcome. The food is very good quality and reasonably priced. The Sunday buffet is an absolute bargain with lots of choice.The fact that the place has been so successful for over 15 years speaks volumes. We'll worth a visit.

My friends decided that as it was my birthday, we would have a couple of drinks, followed by an Indian meal. We had booked which was just as well as the restaurant was full. It was Wednesday night, and lots of specials available.Had Chicken Madras main course, which was great, accompanied by a Lemon Chilie Rice & Spicy Mushrooms. Service was excellent, everyone served together. Waiters are always friendly. Going back soon!

Always a warm welcome, even when they are busy. We always have a good chat with the servers which makes it feel very friendly.This visit we had chicken shashlik and mushroom biriani, both of which were excellent. The sag bhaji and cauliflower/potato bhaji were good too.Don't know when we will be back as our 60+ year association with Emmer Green is coming to an end.

I dined here after work one evening and I was able to benefit from a special offer they had advertised. - The Chicken Tikka starter was lovely - The Chicken Tikka Masala main meal was equally nice and was served with naan bread- The vegetable dish, Spicy Potato was different and actually quiet niceOverall, the place was clean, the food was nice and the staff seemed friendly enough. I would visit again!!

Very nice mid range Indian restaurant. Buffett is great value. It gets packed sometimes. I would say go once every month or so to catch up with friends.

We have visited the Raj several times now as a couple, with our kids and as part of a larger group. On each occasion the service was very good even though they were busy. We found the food to be of a high standard on each occasion across the menu and was served in a timely fashion. We were given the option to have a break between courses which we declined and the food still came out on time. The waiting staff were very good with our kids and took the time to explain the dishes to them etc. I would definitely recommend.

Visited early on Sunday evening and decided to have the Buffet. There were 4 adults. Tables are a bit close together, but that seems to be normal for Indian Restaurants. The food on the Buffet was delicious and the temperature was very hot which was nice as often buffets are luke warm. One criticism I would have is that you were given a plate and expected to use it all night. Normally you would do this anyway but there is usually a pile of plates on the buffet table so that you can choose a clean plate if you wish - say for example your plate had lots of bones on it and you wanted a clean one. Here it seemed that they put a few plates out per table when you were expected to go to the buffet - in our case 4, then they came and told us there were 4 plates on the buffet table for us. Then when the next customers came in they were told for example - there are 2 plates out for you. I found this very strange - however, having said that the service and food were great and I would definitely return.

Had a takeaway and was disappointed. Seemed to be mass produced possibly out of a tin. OK if you like mildly spiced tomato flavours- we like something a little more authentic.Big portions.

First time visiting the Raj buffet. We got there as it opened and was very quiet. We were sat promptly and asked for our drinks order and if we wanted poppadoms. They were hot and came with a good selection of the usual relishes. We had the buffet. Starters were onion bajees, tandoori wings and vegetable curry. I would have appreciated the poppadom sauces being left on the table to have with the starters. Lots of mains to choose from but only potato based dishes if you're vegetarian, which I am, but these were very tasty and I don't have the biggest appetite anyway. Husband sampled all the currys which he enjoyed. Said meat was tender and cut into decent sizes. We enjoyed our time, didn't feel rushed and will visit again as a family.

We are regulars here (literally once a week!) and are always greeted with a warm welcome. The food has never fallen in standard, always delicious and the value is excellent especially if you go on a Tuesday or Wednesday - £10.95 for starters, mains, sides, naan, coffee etc. They provide a very personal service getting to know you by first names and if there ever is a rare problem they will do everything they can to put it right and make sure you are happy.

Been coming here for over 20 years so probably time to a quick review!I only tend to have the Sunday Buffet which is incredible value and very tasty. Only criticism is that they have six types of chicken but only one lamb dish (which is very hot). Veg curry is outstanding though as are all the potato dishes... The funky LED lighting is not as bad as the photo suggests!

Having lived in Reading for over 20 years I have tried many Indian restaurants, and the Raj tops them all. With extra friendly staff who welcome every one when they walk in, to the excellent food that is served, this easily makes this place the best place for a curry in Reading. With lots of parking and great food I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a decent meal at a reasonable price.

We visited on Saturday. This is a favourite haunt of ours. It has maintained consistently great tasting, good quality food. We love the king prawn danzak and chicken tikka jalfrezi. Very popular with the locals, always very busy.

4 of us ate here last night (13 January).Very friendly staff throughout; range of dishes ordered; they were probably a bit on the mild side compared with similar dishes elsewhere but very tasty and good value.

We ordered and received our take-away in 15 mins including a 5 minute car journey. We were told the wait would be 1/2 hr. We doubt that the meal was cooked fresh in 10 mins!Following this meal we were both visiting separate bathrooms all night. I finally got to bed at 4.45am.I called the restaurant the next day to speak to the manager who wasn't there. I left my number for him to call the next day but he did not call that day or ever.

the food was all really nice, there was 9 of us and no issues at all. the staff were all friendly and prompt with their service. the prices were also decent. we would certainly make another visit.

When I used to live in Reading I was a regular visitor, but I moved abroad 8 years ago. When I return I always make sure I visit at least once. This trip I visited twice and the manager still recognised me. He was still able to a dish I always ask for that is not on the menu and the taste is still is as good as I remember. When I'm asked what I miss about the UK I always say a good curry in general and one from the Raj in Reading in particular.

Nice restaurant, but my Husband's and my food was of poor quality. Never used to be like that. 2 customers lost....now go to Momo House .....far better.

I have been going to the Raj Tandoori with my family since I was a child, and can honestly say it's the best Indian in Reading, and one of my favourite restaurants in the town! The staff are always so friendly and add a personal touch to the meals which you don't get from chains, and there is a lovely relaxed, simple atmosphere. The food is very good value for money and tastes so amazing that we can't resist and end up over-ordering! Whenever I am back in Reading I pay this place a visit; I cannot recommend it highly enough!

The majority, of people who frequent, the Raj, are regular customers, like myself.They are on first name, basis, with us all...........The atmosphere, is great, and nothing is too much trouble, and if there is a problem, which is rare, they put it right..The portions, are good, and the quality of food, is excellent.Faruk, and his 2 sons, and the waiters, are, really funny, but professional as well.What more can I say,Richard and his wife Lisa, have been coming to the Raj, close to 25years, every week, sometimes twice a week, that says ,it all

Enjoyed a lovely meal at the Raj. I ordered Chicken Tikka Karahi which was very tasty and not too hot. The service was also very good even though the restaurant was extremely busy. All in all a good time was had by all and no doubt we will be back in the new year.

Went to have a Harvester But 55 Min Wait so we drove across the town as someone in the family said this place had some good feedback. Entered no booking Table of four please Yes no problem. Drinks within 3 Mins Buffet clean trays hot and well tasting good choice, Tandoori chicken starter fresh chicken on the bone well marinated and tasty all the salad was fresh. Chicken tikka was the best i've tasted ever Jalfrezi was hot and spicy. Service was very good and as i had two beer a trip to the loo was found clean and tidy so i say good value for money. will be there again some day and i would Recommend.

I had a takeaway from Raj Tandoori with several other people. I had chicken madras, lamb korma, sag paneer, pilau rice and garlic nan. The chicken madras was a spicy one - the top end of hot of the madras dishes I've had before. The lamb korma was a touch too sweet. Sag paneer was disappointing as the cheese was melted into the spinach. The nan bread was a little dry. But actually overall I did enjoy the food and would have a takeaway from here again, those are mainly minor points as the overall quality seemed pretty good. It's also reasonably priced - around £5.50 or so for a curry. However, it is not Reading's best Indian in my opinion.

Q. When is paneer not paneer? A. When its cheddar!Completely different cheeses. So if you advertise Sag Paneer why put grated cheddar on instead and try to blag that it is paneer?

We visited early on a Saturday evening so that it wasn't too late for the children. The food was lovely and the staff were attentive. The restaurant had a nice relaxed atmosphere and the children are already asking when we're going again!

Typical working class indian, tables with one side squished against a wall and waiters used to pointing at stuff for you to pass or simply banging you when they cant reach and need to stick an armpit in your face. Price is a tad much given the place and experience but others may find it more reasonable if used to cafeteria dining. Food was reasonably good, had a poppadom that wasnt cooked and a naan bread that was burnt but everything that had been put in sauce tasted ok..puddings are poor though, £3.50 for a tiny portion of bought in ice cream - better to walk 50 yards down to the supermarket and buy a big tub of nice ice cream for a fraction. Not bad as a council indian.Not great as an indian.No chance on a place to revisit.

Great meal deal on a Wednesday, but every evening is food. A well presented restaurant, polite and attentive staff and good food, well presented. The Wednesday evening offer is great value for money. I am not local, but return for the good dining experience

There is a large choice of good curry houses in the Reading area and Raj Tandoori is my current favourite. Whether eating in the restaurant or takeaway the food is consistently good. Although the restaurant itself is a little small the service is wonderful. Takeaway food is always ready when they say it will be.If I have just one criticism it's that when taking away the Naan Bread is often a bit undercooked and is a little soggy by the time I get it home (It could be the foil lined wrapper). Nothing a couple of minutes in the oven when I get home can't sort out though.

We had a first class meal at this small but well appointed Indian restaurant.There is a varied and interesting menu and the food is well cooked, spiced not oily and well presented.Their special dishes are very good.They have a small but good wine list as well as the usual beers and lagers associated with this style of restaurant.The owner gave us a warm greeting even though we had not eaten there for some months.The staff are friendly unhurried and quite professional.The offer of complimentary digestives was a bonus and great marketing.The large car park near the restaurant is free.

We have recently discovered that the Raj offers the extreme in laziness ie home delivery of takeaways.So we have started using them and the food is excellent and has always been delivered at the exactly the time stated when the order is placed.All in all, an excellent find.

We have been going here and ordering Take Away from here for years and never disappoints. The owner is a lovely chap and we are always well looked after.Often when we can't be bothered to cook we order a Murade as a healthier take away - tastes great!

Just ordered takeaway, the food was a bit of a let down. The food was cooked well but just tasted very bland. May have been our choice of dishes i.e chicken negris, tarka dal, sag paneer.

We have been eating here regularly fir over 8 years with family and friends. From just 2 of us up to a party of 20 of us on one occasion the quality and service never varies. Take aways and home deliveries are brilliant not to mention their special Wednesday night feast. Well done yet again!

Although this restaurant is quite small it has a clean, cosy atmosphere. I could not fault the food or service. The menu was very expansive and the prices very inexpensive. There were five of us and as usually happens we over ordered and could not finish the generous helpings. However, many take away boxes were provided for our use. As it is situated in a small shopping precinct parking is very easy, which is quite a bonus.

I have been visiting this local restaurant over the years and just recently started going back fairly regularly. It's an unprepossing place in a local parade of shops but it provides good food at very reasonable prices with excellent service. It's staff are Bangladeshi really. The food is pretty standard with just a few speciality dishes, but is always fresh, tasty attractively presentedand there is plenty of it. Draw up in the car park and walk towards the door and it will swing open and you will be welcomed by a beaming member of staff. The hot dishes are nicely hot, a Jalfrezi is great. On Wednesday evening they have a special deal £10.95 buys you any starter, any main (King Prawn is extra), rice or Nan, a side dish and a coffee. With a beer and some puppadoms you will have an excellent meal for two for £30 or SoHo. Personally I always give a hefty tip because the staff are so nice, attentive and efficient. This restaurant has been run by the same guy for 18 years. There are all the touches you would expect from a decent restaurant, hot towels, a chocolate with your coffee and they always see you off with a smile. A great little restaurant in Emmer Green.

The Raj has the best Indian food around! The service is excellent and the staff are so accommodating and go out of their way to help you. They have an excellent menu and do takeaways and deliveries straight to your door which is always great.

The Raj is our local Indian and offers good food at reasonable prices and also does takeaways.Sunday is buffet day at a special price of £7.50 per head and is well worth the visit. We have eaten here on a busy Friday night as part of a large group of people and the standard didn't suffer one bit.Worth a try.

I've visited the Raj on a couple of occasions and also had takeaway several times. The food is good with a wide range of dishes although having had a variety of different main courses I do feel that the sauces themselves are all very similar and don't have as much unique flavour as I've seen at other Indian restaurants. Their lamb meat can sometimes be a little on the chewy side.Starters are good, as is naan and their rice and poppadums.Service is courteous but sometimes a little short, but this could be because the restaurant is quite small and often busy.Prices are good with most main courses around the £8 to £9 mark

Ive been to this restaurant on numerous occasions and most recently for my 50th birthday with my family. They accommodate your tastes specially - even if it's not on the menu. Service great, consistent and food is great. This place is wonderful and they really do go the extra mile.
