House of Flavours in Reading

Great Indian food, also featured a very good singer.

The food quality is going down with time. This used to be my favourite restaurant in Reading until 2023 for that proper north Indian taste and since then the quality had been degrading, I visited there couple of times in 2024 and then started exploring other restaurants. Today I thought let’s try here if it has gotten better but the quality of food is even worse now.

A great bright open setting, and a spice themed decor. The menu was different from other Indian restaurants, and surprisingly long; there was plenty of choice, we took advice from the waiter, and we enjoyed our meal that was colourful, healthy and full of flavour.

The chicken biryani and paneer tikka achari was poor today compared to regular taste. The paneer tikka was burnt and chicken biryani didn’t have the biryani flavour. We were told that the head chef is working in the kitchen today. Please look into this as the food was disappointing today.

I recently visited House of Flavours, and it was a fantastic experience. This restaurant is excellent for North Indian food, offering a delicious and visually appealing meal. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a nice display of spices on the tables that adds to the authenticity of the dining experience. Our server, Jaybir, was very attentive and helpful, ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout our meal. We started with papadoms and garlic naan, which were both very tasty. The papadoms were served with a variety of dips, including a delicious mango chutney. The garlic naan was soft and perfectly flavored, complementing our main courses beautifully. For our main dishes, we had soya chaap masala and paneer tikka masala. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, with rich flavors that really showcased the chef's skill. The soya chaap masala was especially good, with tender soya chaap in a creamy sauce. The paneer tikka masala was also delicious, with soft and well-marinated paneer. Overall, House of Flavours offers a great dining experience with good food, a nice atmosphere, and attentive service. It definitely deserves a full 5-star rating for its exceptional cuisine and welcoming environment.

Well..... Dishoom has been knocked off the top spot!..... I came all the way from Watford based on friends recommendations, and boy did it not disappoint. A large restaurant with a great atmosphere (and cool tables) with friendly and attentive service. Authentic flavoursome food using top notch, non GMO ingredients........ What more could I ask for? The meat was all cooked to perfection juicy and tender and true to the name the deep mix of flavours was absolutely sublime. I will definitely be visiting again, even it it is an hour away...... would highly recommend.

Disappointing Experience - Terrible Kofta Curry, Chili chicken and Slow Service ⭐ I was really excited to try House of Flavours, but unfortunately, my experience was far from enjoyable. I ordered the Kofta Curry, and it was truly disappointing. The koftas were overcooked and lacked flavor, and the curry itself was watery and bland. It didn’t taste fresh at all, which was a real letdown. To make matters worse, the service was incredibly slow. It took far too long for our food to arrive, and even longer for the server to check in with us. The staff seemed overwhelmed and unorganized, which only added to the frustration. Overall, this was a very disappointing dining experience. I won’t be returning and wouldn't recommend it to others.

We ordered 3 dishes but the service was very slow. After 40 Minutes we got our first meal. Moreover the service was very slow and not worth the price.

This is what happens when you rest on your laurels. I placed a takeaway order that was supposed to be ready in 35 minutes, but when I arrived, it wasn’t prepared. I was told to wait another five minutes—though that stretched much longer. When I questioned the delay, I was met with hostility and rudeness instead of an apology. Absolutely not acceptable!!

Loved the place and the taste, kudos to Sachin and the team. I recommend this place for all Indians in Reading and surrounding who crave for authentic Indian taste. Edit: had given 5-⭐️ rating a couple of years ago, and today I’m changing it to 1-⭐️. The service has degraded, the staff now is rude and doesn’t care about the customers it seems. I recently dined at this restaurant again and was thoroughly disappointed. From the moment we arrived, the experience went downhill. There was literally nobody at the entrance to welcome us or manage the tables, so we found ourselves aimlessly wandering around, trying to catch the attention of the staff. When we did manage to find someone, they were incredibly rude and seemed completely disinterested in helping us. It felt like the staff just didn't care about the customers at all. There’s lack of basic hospitality and the careless attitude of the staff made our dining experience one of the worst we’ve ever had. I definitely won't be returning and would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a pleasant and welcoming dining experience.

Our previous valentines booking fell through and was struggling to find a place to eat. We were offered a table with no struggle which was great. The service was fantastic from Jagvir and treated us so well. The food and drinks was delicious and we enjoyed every part of the night. Thank you!

It was lunch time so not many tables were occupied. It was our anniversary and valentines day so, rose on the table would have been brilliant . Starters were good. Biryanis were average..overall okay..

We ordered a takeaway, my wife dish was Chicken Pistachio, it was couple of huge lumps of chicken on the bone, and it had absolutely no taste, I had chicken Lababdar that wasn't very nice, the onion Bhaji, was very overdone with burnt bits, never again.

The food was very good. Expecially the Mutton khari and Chicken khari was fabulous. The stuff was very good and Nice. One lady provide outstanding services with exceptional attention. Their service was top-notch. For me, it's easily one of the best spot in Reading. I will come again with my friend's.

Bustling with people and BUSTING with flavours. Although my curry was packed full of cardamom pods and seeds or whatever it is (I don’t know tbh) and if you crunch on them your mouth explodes with aniseed/mace flavour. Maybe you’re not supposed to eat them? Or Is that what they mean by house of flavours? But anyway the curries are all great, delicious naan, lamb chop curry is particularly recommended We went on a very busy Friday night and sat next to an ostensible hen party who were all screaming in unison at their samosas and spilling drinks. Not my vibe tbh The tables are also full of mummified spices. Nice touch.

The so-called "chicken biryani" at this restaurant was a major disappointment for anyone familiar with authentic Indian cuisine. What was served bore little resemblance to true biryani, lacking the essential layering, aromatics, and proper spice balance that defines this classic dish. The rice and chicken seemed hastily mixed rather than properly prepared using the traditional dum cooking method, and the accompanying raita was equally inauthentic. Even the waiter, when asked, candidly agreed that this dish doesn't compare to traditional Hyderabadi biryani. While it might pass as a basic spiced rice dish, calling it 'biryani' is misleading and does a disservice to one of India's most beloved culinary treasures. Not only did we waste our money, but the dish was a complete misrepresentation of authentic biryani.

Excellent food and service, Manager Mr. TONY is very supportive and cooperative. We had cooperate party for 15 People which was really well managed.

Review: Absolute Worst Hospitality - Zero Stars My experience at this restaurant has been abysmal on multiple occasions. Here are the key reasons why: Horrible Service During Weekday Dinner: • After being seated, no one came to take our order even after 45 minutes, despite repeatedly calling for service. • The staff blatantly ignored us, rejecting our attempts to get their attention with shocking arrogance. • When someone finally came to take the order, we were told it would take another hour for the food to arrive. Needless to say, we left. • The staff’s attitude was rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional throughout. Weekend Lunch Buffet Disaster: • I called at 12 PM to enquire about their lunch buffet for that day. They informed me it was open from 12 to 3:30 PM but said nothing about reservations. • Arriving at 12:30 PM, we found reservation boards on many tables. The manager rudely informed us that a reservation was required. • When we pointed out that this wasn’t mentioned over the phone, he unapologetically blamed us, saying we should have asked explicitly. • The manager’s behaviour, like the rest of the staff, was incredibly rude and dismissive, making us feel unwelcome and poorly treated. Overall, the entire service staff appears untrained, rude, and completely lacking in basic hospitality skills. If you enjoy being ignored, disrespected, and mistreated, this is the place for you. For everyone else, avoid at all costs.

If you want to wait an hour and a half for your food, for it to come out wrong and you’re naan burnt. This is the place for you. Worst I’ve ever had!

I used to be a loyal customer of this restaurant because of their authentic Indian flavours and quality food, but sadly, it seems those days are long gone. My recent experience was nothing short of disappointing. Today, I ordered the chicken dum biryani, expecting the same delicious, fragrant dish they once served. Instead, what I received was a poorly executed meal that bore no resemblance to proper biryani. They simply mixed old pilau rice with some masala, added what seemed like stale chicken, and drowned it in oil and chilli powder. It was completely overpowered by spice, which is not what authentic Indian flavours are about. Indian cuisine is known for its balanced, complex spices—not just overwhelming heat. Sadly, this restaurant seems to have lost its touch and is now cutting corners with quality. If this is the new standard, I won't be returning anytime soon. A once-great spot now serves the worst attempt at Indian food I've ever had. What a shame!

I recently visited House of Flavour and was extremely disappointed by the service. Upon walking in, I noticed multiple tables with no “reserved” signs. When I politely inquired about seating, the manager greeted me very rudely and stated all tables were reserved. I explained there were no signs indicating this and no reserved signs on tables ,but was told I’d need to wait for 2 hours and could only get a table after 10:00 PM. When I asked to see the reservation list, the manager ignored me completely. Having worked in the hospitality industry globally for 15 years, I found this behavior shocking and unprofessional, especially on a Friday night when clear communication is crucial. This isn’t the first bad experience either. My friend has been turned away four times previously for not “reserving” a table. To make matters worse, it seems there’s a clear bias—Indian customers like myself are made to feel unwelcome, while white customers are prioritized under the assumption they will spend more money. Such discriminatory and dismissive behavior is unacceptable. I will never return and cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone to everyone

Ordered over £50 of food. The chicken biryani was not a biryani. It was a chicken curry sauce mixed in with rice. Terrible food. Never order from here again.

delivery kept getting pushed back waited over 2 hours and food turned up cold

Mis dos compañeros de trabajo y yo pedimos 3 curry’s 2 arroz y 2 nan panes, 1 pinta de kingfisher y una jarra de agua. 1 corona de pollo vino 15 minutos después de las otras cosas. Cuando tuve la cuenta, no sacaron dinero por su error y arruinar parte de nuestra noche, pero intentaron cobrarme por dos pintas de cobra que nunca tuvimos. Cuando cuestioné esto con el gerente, él quitó las cobras y dijo que tenías que pagar el resto en su totalidad y se fue. Pregunté por qué era esto y el camarero dijo que se meterían en problemas si no pagaba la cuenta en su totalidad. Así que no pagué la totalidad para que eso sucediera. Si esto hubiera ocurrido en casi cualquier otro restaurante indio, habrían retirado la korma de la factura.

The food was really exclusive. Amazing variety of flavours. I highly recommend the large sharing plate - this arrived really quickly and the chicken for exceptionally good. Service admittedly was a little slow after the initial starter was brought out, however, the live music was suitable entertainment.
