Raj Tandoori in Newcastle upon Tyne

This place is the first Indian I tried in Newcastle. I’ll never try another. Care and attention to detail with splendid homemade samosas and pakora, tasty and well-presented food and excellent service. I gobbled down the pilau rice, tikka masala, naan, samosas and pakoras and Jesus, it’s hard to remember a time when I was more satisfied with a meal. Outstanding.

The staff are very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent , Chicken Biryani with a vegetable sauce (made madras hot on request) Mutton Karhkri and a lovely Garlic and Corriander naan. We enjoyed the food and restaurant atmosphere so much, we went back the following evening. By far one of the best Indian Restaurants we've eaten in .

Was in with family for a few drinks and some food, service was brilliant and staff were so polite. Had a 3 course set meal, food was perfect. Will definitely be back.

The place was empty on the Thursday night we went in, but it was 10pm. However we were very surprised at how good the food was, everything was very freshly made, lots of flavour and the service was excellent. I think we discovered a little gem in the place. The decor could do with any update, but otherwise can’t fault the place. Would definitely go back.

Went here on a busy Saturday night. Table for 2, not a problem. Small wait but the table was fresh and the chairs even pulled out for us, can never complain about that. Lovely pint of Cobra to start and ordered food. I went with the Lamb Dopiaza, pilau rice and a garlic naan. The food did take a little time to arrive but again, it was a very busy Saturday night with a few big groups. Nothing can be done about that. Well worth the wait however. Delicious curry and rice. The naan was cooked perfectly and was the perfect tool for mopping up the dish. Very reasonably priced too. I will definitely be back.

Eaten here often after a night time and the food tastes fine but every single time I get food poisoning. Not just me but everyone I was with.

Food was great with a speedy service, atmosphere was great with a full restaurant, however chap talking payment for the bill was arrogant and impatient and a bit of a prick, which has put me off returning to this establishment.

I had tried Four course meal at 7 pm . The y served food was not freshly made . Ordered mushroom rice - looks it was cooked long ago and not even warmed it before serving , by looking at the plate one can say it.( unfortunate I didn't take pictures , as I wasn't prepared to write a review during the dining) Keema naan , It wasn't felt like keema inside was set it . and cooked . I left the Ice-cream on the table after having a spoon. . Taste and freshly made food is what we expect. despite the food taste .. the Serving team did their best .

Lovely food, staff and atmosphere. Chefs are generous with the food. If looking for a good, traditional, typical Indians then Raj Tandoori. Good for nearby parking and value for money

Had the poppadoms and pickle tray for starters, then madras chicken, rice and naan bread, cobra beer on draught. The food was Very nice and the staff were very helpful

Great Indian in great location. Food is authentic and the real deal when it comes to taste. We had 4 different curries and they had individual flavours and levels, not the dreaded base sauce with chilli added. Staff lovely. Just need to add a zero beer to menu for the designated driver and it’ll be perfect.

Hidden gem ,never been before went as a family ,service was excellent ,food was good ,highly recommend ,when we have the chance to go back to Newcastle definetly will go again

Fantastic food and service, highly recommend

The food here was very good. I had Lamb Shatkora, something I have never eaten before and it was very flavourful and balanced. My wife had the Bengal seafood curry and she thought the same, absolutely excellent. We don't live in Newcastle, but if we did, we would be regulars here without a doubt.

Fantastic food. Really good flavours. Good service and reasonable prices. It is down a bit of a backstreet but that didn’t matter because it was such a good curry. I’m looking forward to going back soon!!

Bland curry, might be spoilt with coming from Bradford but if I'm being honest I can make better ones. The nann bread was a very small

4 of us were there to dine. After waiting for 30 mins, the big boss / manager came to take order. One of us was not hungry and so we were going to have 3 main meals and 3 whiskey's for my friends . Listening to the food order, the manager refused to serve us. He said we need to order 4 full meals becoz we are 4 people. We booked in My Deli (10 mins walk), ordered same food and they served with all affection. Clearly, Raj Tandoori team needs to focus more on service and respect what the customer wants to eat.

Please, visit ASAP! I went here for a dinner date 2 days ago. Amazingly tasty and authentic food. Everything tasted fresh and was soooo delicious. Staff are incredible and super polite and friendly. Not very pricey either so we got various things.

Excellent value, service and experience. The staff are very respectful and the food is excellent. We have a daughter at university in Newcastle and each time we have travelled & visited we have frequented this restaurant. It is very central with plenty of bars surrounding it, the outside of the venue doesn’t quite compliment & give off the warm and friendly vibes of the restaurant inside. Will definitely be back !

First class service, incredible food, and very reasonable prices. Unfortunately took no photos... the food didn't last that long. Would definitely come again next time I visit Newcastle.

Ok but nothing special ! The Bombay potatoes were bad, too soft and had no taste and the naan was flat and not puffy. The rice was nice and my Balti was alright. Have had much better so won't be returning !

Great choice of menu, with delicious food. All the staff are so pleasant and friendly. The Four Course Meal daily menu at £14.95 is brilliant value. Recommended.

Stumbled upon this place whilst visiting Newcastle for a few days. Food was nice, and very reasonably priced (£19.45 for Lamb Bhuna, Rice, Peshwari Naan & Pint of Coke). Waiters were pleasant and attentive. Nothing really to moan about. All good ! Definitely worth a try.

My friend and I ate there last Thursday was over charged by £5 manager wouldn't listen disgusting manner honestly so RUDE If u can go some where else plz do they just look to put Ur bill up on the £15.50 meal 4 course so bad man My advice do no use

Food delicious ,staff warm and friendly made to feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door service is amazing timed perfectly. Been going for 20+years never been disappointed in all that time will keep going back as perfection is hard to come by these days . Well done Guys

Shocking. Takeaway just gets worse everytime. Rip off. Sorry, but what was once A fantastic place pre COVID, not anymore. Restaurant used to be good as was takeaway. But standards terrible now. Owner used to be nice now its only about the money he can take, not the food.

Went here after visiting St James Park. Bit of a hidden gem. Food was top class and well-priced. Staff slightly miserable. Service was good though, food was ready sharpish.

Visited with family last night. Excellent meal and very reasonably priced. Also Cobra at £5 pint in city centre is good value. Don't be put off by the location and state of buildings around this place which has seen better times. Would definitely come back.

There's something special about this place. Yes, some places have such and such. Yes some places feels more Michelin. However, this place makes you feel at home. No nonsense, no trying to he something they are not. Amazing service, amazing atmosphere and of course, amazing food. I've had Indian food all around the country, and nothing has quite added up.

It's a Newcastle Institution. However, that doesn't automatically mean it's any good. The decor is tired and mediocre, the food is regular and unexciting. For city centre dining, it certainly won't break the bank.... but don't expect too much.

Wow - genuinely one of the worst meals I have ever eaten. Ever. Unfortunately the place smells of BO on entering, and it doesn’t get much better. There was certainly no discernible mango in the mango chutney, we had to send the soggy leather-like samosas back, and the least said about the lamb kebabs the better. Food came out almost as quickly as it went in and pretty much looks the same at both ends. 1 star feels a little generous. I’m afraid I won’t be returning.

I asked for spicy food and I got it. Bit hidden from the main walkway but good food.

I visited twice there. Food was good. 1st time, it was crowded so it took time for our order and 2nd time, it was vacant so got the order quickly. 😀

Excellent service and great food

I had the chillie chicken dish, which the waiter advised was "hot." I found it very bland and tasteless with almost zero spice level. My wife had a vegetarian dish, which was bland and tasteless also unfortunately

Not authentic Indian. Absolutely not meant for anyone seeking good Indian food. All items we ordered were below average taste. Had the worst Seekh kebab in here.

Been here a couple times and tried the vegan spinach curry and vegetable samosas. The food is unreal and they have big portions (you can definitely share one curry and rice between 2 people plus starter). I recommend this restaurant, they have good service and I will keep coming here.

Great authentic Indian, proper tandoori cooked in a proper tandor oven.

I would have given negative rating but there is no option for this. Me and my other 2 friends visited the place and tandoor was not cooked properly and staff was debating that one not cooked but other is ok. Staff doesn't have any manners to behave with customers and they were very rude. Food wasn't as per the quality the amount which you are paying. Overall one of the worst experience in my whole life.

I'm surprised how this kind of restaurant has rating above 4 star. Place and food was disgusting and behaviour of staff very arrogant. Continuously saying that are finished, can we bring the bill for you. This was a shameful experience for me and my friends. We have paid almost £80 pounds for nothing.

We have today shared a £14.50pp 4 course meal which was excellent. Very friendly and efficient service. The food was very, very good and we can not find fault with anything. Lots of menu choice and great value for money. Mainly 'local' customers which is often a good marker. We will definitely visit again.

Speedy service despite being busy. Wasn't really prawns in starter. More small shrimps. But that is my only complaint. Good tasty portions of curry and rice, and all at a reasonable price. Would recommend.

Have been going to this Indian restaurant since 1995. and the food is excellent, even when busy you never wait long, staff are friendly and service very good, the owner overseas and always asks if everything is fine. Busy at weekends make sure you book or miss out.

Want a delicious tandoori takeaway? Perfectly coated and baked in tandoor oven I can wholeheartedly recommend the tandoori chicken served at Raj Tandoori. It's rare to find the authentic smoked rich taste done so well. Will be ordering again next time I'm in Newcastle.

Visited this a few times, one of the better Asian restaurants in Newcastle.

Been going to the Raj longer than I can remember, just been tonight with my wife, son, his family and the grandson along with his partner, my wife is now wheelchair bound, the family and staff of the Raj do everything in their power to help us feel welcome, the food is always the same, never changes and is always to our liking, thank you so much for a great family night out. See you all again soon.

Overall a good experience here, food well "spiced". Portions were generous in size but my main could have done with a extra couple of pieces of chicken. It's located in a side street but easy to find, I will definitely return next time I am in Newcastle

Had a couple of hours to kill in Newcastle and found this curry house hidden away in a side street. Friendly and efficient staff. Cobra beer on draft. Ordered a couple of kebab starters followed by a butter chicken tikka and a house special curry. Both very good and will be going again next time we are in Newcastle.

First time but not the last, great value set menu and the service was excellent a hidden gem
