Raj Restaurant in Central Bedfordshire

We love coming to the Sunday buffet! Great selection of dishes to try and the service is always excellent. The place doesn’t look up to much from the outside but well worth a visit!

Despite booking a table over a month ago, two family members travelling over two hours to meet us and enjoy a meal at an old family favourite. The Raj is now a place I'll not go back to and can't strongly enough suggest to others not to use either. Why do I feel that way and encourage you not to use The Raj!? Our booking was cancelled without telling us to make way for a large party instead. Looking at us as if we were a huge inconvenience, telling us to get out as they had no room in the restaurant. Then the vaguest most dismissive apology from them before ignoring questions of how did this happen. An honest apology would have been 100% better than telling us we made a mistake and that we were wrong, before getting their booking confirmations diary out to us. With our booking heavily scribbled out. For accusing me and my family of lying about having made the booking. For having family travel a long way on the expectation of enjoying a nice meal be disappointingly taken away from us. For not having the courtesy to call us and advise the table reservation will need to be amended. For tainting a lot of good memories we have of The Raj by treating us as nuisance time wasters and making out, initially, that we were the ones that were fabricating having booked a table. For having two members that are not of good health, one whom made the long distance travel, suffer episodes of anxiety. After many years of convincing friends and family to use The Raj, you've just lost yourself loyal 4 customers. Actually more, including other immediate family members within the town bringing the number of regular and semi-regular customers you've lost to almost 20. Including potentially all my friends and people through my work place when I advise them to not use The Raj again. Thank you for some good times over the years but sadly the poor way you treated us has resulted in me and my family to never use your establishment again.

The Sunday buffet is not widely advertised but I’m glad I noticed the sign in the window. A nice selection of starters and curries with bread for £14.95.

The service is fantastic, the server is lovely and the food is bloody fantastic, best curry ever love it

Just don’t bother ! Order from the raj once a month and the service is going downhill every time!!!! When we call for an update, we keep getting a 10 minute window. Honestly just done bother !

We’ve always used this restaurant for takeaways but recently the food doesn’t taste the same. The saag was quite dry and not as tasty as normal

Delicious food, Good sized portions, arrived when it was expected....2 naan missing which arrived very quickly after I phoned them! Highly recommend

The best curry I’ve ever had...and I’ve had a lot. I’ve been going to The Raj for many years now so it’s about time I gave this restaurant some credit. I usually go for curries such as the Ceylon, Dopiaza, Madras and Balti. All are incredibly diverse in flavour and spice, and the meat is always cooked perfectly; the only criticism I have is that they could include more meat in their curry dishes but the flavour is immensely tasty. Their side/ starter dishes have such variety and are all perfectly cooked and garnished. A lovely warm and welcoming environment inside the restaurant and also a quick and efficient delivery service. If you’re going for a curry in Leighton Buzzard - go to The Raj.

Past this restaurant a few times over the past 20 years as used to frequent there when a friend lived in linslade & it was very good then but wondered if it was still up to scratch or changed hands for better or worse?? Well finally took the plunge tonight with a take out & it was ready bang on time 20 mins! I paid my dollar & got back in the car for home when straight away I could smell the aroma of a cracking curry with all the spices dancing on your tongue before you’ve even tasted it & hoping it tastes even better? Well I was not disappointed as the Onion bharjis were like the old Skool cricket ball sized & well done on the outside but moist on the inside & a nice mint sauce & chilli n onion dip & lovely fresh salad, but the star of the show was the Chicken tikka patia I’ve been longing for for years since the taste of India closed many moons ago in Dunstable & never thought I would have such a mouth watering patia again now the search is over!! The rice was above average too with extra flavour than your normal basmati with colour & sag aloo was perfect with just the right amount of spice & spinach & well cooked spuds also peshwari was cracking not too doughy & not crispy! This is the best curry I’ve had in years & I’ve had plenty all over UK & Luton! This takes some beating & cant wait until it opens the restaurant but for now this is most definitely on my hit list when passing or not! P.S. They do banquet feast take out Wednesday & Thursday £14!

Good indian food promptly served. Spacious, down to earth restaurant that is not to busy on a Sunday lunch time. Carried on serving despite water restrictions at the time.

As we live in North Lincolnshire and was down visiting my sister for the weekend we booked a table here.We have had take aways in the past from here so decided a visit was needed.The staff where all friendly and helpful.The food was excellent and we all enjoyed our dishes.It was nice to relax between courses and not to rush.

Have been going here regularly with my boyfriend over the last 12 months and meals have always been of good quality and my favourite Indian in the area.

Came here with friends on spec - its ok, while service a little haphazard and decor jaded. the food was very good.

Never disappointed when dining in the Raj! Always greeted with friendly smile by staff and they always go above n beyond in terms of service ! Generous portions and packed with lots of flavour and spice ! They have converted me to an Indian lover for their food! Thank you for your wonderful service and great tasty food ! So we ordered a takeaway... and got a non vegetarian dish. Complained but they were not happy . Complained in person and we were told we were wrong. Always supported this local business but to make me eat a dish that contained meat... super insulting. Your behaviour ref the customer service... awful.... avoid.... will never return and will advise friends to not go there after being told we are not welcome back... absolutely disgusting

This is our favourite Indian restaurant. Always delicious and great service. Really nice family run restaurant.

We live just up the road from The Raj and often wonder why, after a visit 8 years ago, we never returned. Now we know. We visited last night and were the only customers. The decor is scruffy. The food had no spice or heat, was not fresh, and tasted like it had been pre-prepared many days ago and microwaved. The keema naan didn't have any meat in it. It was a plain naan with meat put on top and attached with melted ghee. Bland, bland, bland. We complained to the waiter who said if we came back he'd give us a discount. Yeah right. Why would we come back when Indian Ocean is just around the corner? We just count ourselves lucky that we haven't got food poisoning (yet...).

Food consistently delicious, tasty, excellent. Good value. Good service. We have been going here for many years, and have no reason to change. Never disappoints.

Our takeaway from the Raj restaurant was last Monday when our usual restaurant happened to be closed. I have eaten in the Raj restaurant a few of times with friends and not been impressed by the service level or quality of the décor, the food had been avarage.

We have eaten here many times and always enjoy our meals. The staff are very friendly and the food is consistently well prepared. The free sweets are a bonus!

We went into this place which is quite near Leighton buzzard station and the first impression is that it was freezing cold and a bit "damp".

Never had a bad curry from the Raj, and we have been many times but not just recently, and I don’t know why?

We went to the Raj New Years Eve and a couple of weeks later.Not disappointed on either visits.Food was delicious and service excellent.The food was hot and presentation excellent.The waiters couldn't do enough for us.Tandoori mixed grill to die for.Will be back soon.Thankuou.

Ate at this restaurant one evening whilst on a canal holiday. The food and service were excellent and a nice atmosphere inside. Don't be put off by the outside appearance. If ever in the area again, would definately visit.

Llamado para una rápida comida para llevar - tenía media Kingfisher mientras espera, y era plana, amarga y olía mal. La comida llegó con sonrisas, y yo regresamos a casa. Una variedad de platos todos tuvimos la misma salsa roja, con un montón de cebollas. Las samosas eran claramente granel cosas congeladas, frito. Por desgracia no lo suficiente todavía frío frito en el medio. Cada plato tenía la misma salsa, con las cebollas. Aquellos que pedí que más caliente tenía chili en polvo en bruto, o mejores chili espolvoreado cuidadosamente. Las piezas de pollo tenía agujeros, que es una técnica común para brocheta de carne para cocinar rápidamente. En cuanto al Cordero, aun estremézcase. Nada se había marinado o cocinada con la salsa. Veo tarifa muchos este lugar, lo que me parece muy extraño. Que se sirven de carne congelada se calienta y barato. Lo único que parecía estar 'recién cocinados eran las cebollas 'omnipresente

Este es ahora un lugar para nosotros para ir los fines de semana con uno o más niños. La comida es excelente, el servicio también.

I haven't eaten in the restaurant lately but use them almost weekly for deliverys as the food is really really good our favourite and we have about 7 to choose from.

Fuimos a cenar un grupo de 8 entre Navidad y Año Nuevo. Nos ofrecieron el menú de banquete que era poblaciones un entrante, un plato principal, arroz o naan y un plato de verdura, además de té o café por menos de £15 cada uno. Los adolescentes con nosotros preguntamos si podían tener un pan de arroz y verduras en lugar de la y el camarero convino en que estaba bien.

Lugar super, pop regularmente la comida es genial, bien cocinada y sazonada y tiene un ambiente agradable. Siempre tengo ganas de volver! !

We eat at the Raj on a regular basis. The staff are friendly especially Colin, the food is consistently delicious. If you have never tried it, don't be put off by appearances. not famous for chic décor, they just serve great food, and I can tell you from long experience, the service is fast all of the time and friendly 100% of the time. went here with my mum, you get siblings & baby! What a fantastic restaurant! The staff are absolutely amazing! So polite &I always on the ball. Service is top notch & never ever a wait for food or even for a takeaway delivery! They are more than happy too twist your order or add things for no extra charge! Best Indian I have ever had!

As always an excellent meal and superb service. All the dishes were tasty and I can especially recommend the Saag Dhall. All tasted fresh and authentic. Only one thing though...it could have been a little hotter (temperature not spicyness).

Yes it looks like an old pub, it's not famous for chic decor or any hipster crap they just serve great food, and I can tell you from long experience, the service is fast 90% of the time and friendly 100% of the time.

The food was fine, pretty standard curry restaurant fare.The service was slow, which was a pain as we had a train to catch and only had 2 hours to eat, which is usually enough.This is an old building, and it shows. Not sure how much spent on sundries like the toilets. Like a lot of restaurants they serve sizzler dishes but the restaurant ventilation system did not cope and we had the comical experience of virtually the entire restaurant coughing, which could be funny but I was concerned as my wife is asthmatic and feared this could trigger a response. I work in a chemical laboratory so not usually susceptible to such things but even I was coughing pretty hard.Overall good food but in the unlikely event we are back in Leighton Buzzard this will not be top of list for places to eat which is shame as the food was pretty good when it arrived.

Excellent food extremely fast service, I have no idea how they manage to get stuff out for delivery so quickly and which is generally very good quality for a takeout.

Excellent food, first class service, really good value for money. Would thoroughly recommend. Have eaten here quite a few times so can say from experience that it is consistent in both food and service.

After hearing good reviews we went to try out the Raj for the first time. We found the restaurant shabby looking. The toilets left a lot to be desired. Maybe they were short staffed but seemed very busy with the take-away side. Waited a long time for service and to pay our bill. Having said that - the food was very tasty and the staff were polite. There is a nice smoking area between the restaurant and the toilets with pretty lights. Probably won't go again.

We've visited Raj twice. Food is very authentic and great value for money. Service is quite good...usual standard for an Indian restaurant. Definitely recommended.

Me and my other half ordered a take away from the raj the other day for the first time, we thought we'd give them a try... Well I regretted that!! I ordered a rogen josh this is a medium spiced dish, well let's just say I could have given it to a baby, it had no spice and no flavour! My other half had a korma, this was tasteless and bland! And the popadoms were stale ! I phoned up straight away where the manager said I could get a full refund if I went to the shop the next day. I thought fair play to them, I got there the next day and had to wait half an hour for the manager to arrive! Whilst waiting the kitchen man came out and was very rude to me and was dripping with sweat ( he looked very unhygienic) After being told to be there for 6. When he finally arrived he tried giving me part of a refund where he had previously stated I would get a FULL refund!!! I said I this was unexceptable and I wanted my money back... He said I should have brought the food back ( if he would have stated this the night before I would have) but it was now in my bin, after saying this to him he still insisted I collect the food out of my bin and take it into them ! I thought this was appalling and very unhygienic again! I will not be returning to this establishment and I hope this will put off future customers !! I would recommend going just down the road to DILRAJ.

Food is lovely here whether you eat in or take away! Only issue I have is last time we tried to get a delivery to Stanbridge we were told the driver was new and would probably get lost! Hopefully this won't be an issue next time!

Very pleasant restaurant with calm lighting and mellow music. The staff are very pleasant and efficient. On my last visit I had a Chicken Madras which is my old favourite. They do have some unusual items on the menu that I have never heard of before, so I promise to be more adventurous next time. The food was very nice. Parking is a problem but it is in walking distance for lots of residents and not far from the town centre or the railway station.

A great curry house. Great to eat in or for a take out. Prices are reasonable and the food is really good.

This restaurant is amazing. Staff are humble, polite and very accommodating. Food is delicious. The Tarka dal is top notch!!!Also recommend their bindi bahji!I like that it is not decorated like every other modern corporate Indian, it is kept clean and cozy! Give it a try, you won't regret it!

We arrived late for a lunchtime buffet. They served excellent onion bhaji and chicken tikka to the table whilst our main course was prepared. 3 chicken dishes plus veg curry and bombay potatoes nan bread and rice. Very tasty and great value!

We've just been to the Sunday buffet, advertised at 6.95 a head, and realised on the way home that our bill of 27.90 meant we'd been charged nearly a tenner for one bottle of Cobra and a half of Kingfisher. The food was fine, but I don't think we'll be going back again.

Lost track how many years we have enjoyed the raj !! In our eyes always just right ! Good food - comfortable restaurant - attentive staff - look forward to 2015 visits !

Visited on a wednesday night 1st Oct' 2014 to celebrate four years withmy lovely wife and we're so glad we did.Like other reviews the place was almost empty but we did notice the takeaway man making frequent trips out.I had the chicken chat,garlic chilli chicken tikka massalla,peshwari naan egg pilau rice ,bombay potato and shared 3 pompadoms with my wife.From start to finish it was a lovely tasty dish with so many great flavours and with 3 wines and 2 large bottle of Cobra and all under £50 a bargain!Will recommend to anyone wanting a good value tasty meal,I think the decor could do with updating to encourage more people through the door to taste a great Indian meal.

We pitched up as two adults and a toddler for the Sunday buffet (arrived 2pm). Unfortunately there is highchair available, but said it was fine for toddler to, well, ...toddle!I asked if there was vegetarian also, to which the host replied there was. We took out seat in a traditionally laid out restaurant and was told the food would be a few minutes. The buffet (which was fresh) was laid out in the centre of the room.Shortly thereafter, my wife was presented with four, freshly prepared, vegetarian dishes at our table. We were surprised that this was afforded as part of the buffet. The food was great, the buffet nan was peshwari - simply great! Never charged for the toddler, though he did keep going to the bar and helping himself to white chocolate mice. Would recommend highly. Toilets and courtyard area would benefit from a deep-clean/upgrade.

We visited the Raj on a quiet, very warm, Monday evening and were the only three people in the restaurant. The service and meal were very good and the price was reasonable. Without other diners, the atmosphere was a bit flat, but that was not the restaurant's fault. The house red wine was most quaffable.

as a family we visited the raj on a sunday buffet night (each as much as you like) even though the dishes were limited it was very tastey, very pleasant atmosphere and the guys in there are very helpfull and polite...looked after us very well, deffo go here again

A reasonable Indian although disappointed for a family of 4 we did not get more poppadoms! Authentic flavours and generous helpings of everything else- ignore the shabby exterior!
