Another excellent meal at the Raj Douth. I've been using the Raj for longer than I care to remember. Never had a bad meal or service. I live in the Devon now and always visit the Raj, every time I am back in Hitchin.

Amazing food, fabulous service and the only coal tandoor in the area, a real gem. We had the most amazing tandoori lamb and were invited to see the coal tandoor in the kitchen which was spotless, a very impressive set up. Service was excellent, very friendly.

We love Raj Douth, it is charming and has a warmth which is an inviting, cozy atmosphere and the delicious array of dishes showcase authentic flavours. The staff are super friendly and add a personal touch, making the dining experience truly enjoyable. If we’re not dining in then we are ordering a takeaway from here.

So disappointed with the whole experience from the minute we arrived just after 10pm, welcomed by a Very rude and grumpy waiter who told us they stopped serving in half Hour and proceeded to makes Us feel pressured and uncomfortable Food was bland and almost cold. Toilettes were dirty as was the back of the restaurant. When my husband went to use the toilet the waiter told Me To hurry up and get out. I was shocked and furious. Hitchin has many great restaurants- choose one of them Above this filth And disappointing Establishment

We had been loyally coming here probably every few months from 2012 until 2019, recommending it to friends and family but on my 30th birthday in 2019, they served my 6 year old son raw chicken nuggets. They had no ice and served warm drinks, were unapologetic and blamed it on the fact that it was the day after a bank holiday. We decided to give it another try tonight but I'm sad to say, were left underwhelmed. Our starters were delicious but the poppadoms were stale, the main courses bland and the onion bhajis fell apart. The service was ok but the waiters appeared to be inexperienced and a bit awkward. It took a while for our order to be taken and it wasn't even at half capacity at 8.30 on a Saturday night and I think that speaks for itself. The toilets also need some TLC. It is a shame as this used to be, in our opinion, the best Indian in town but upon walking home, Paprika was full and we'll carry on going there instead. Please invest if you can, you have a prime spot and it is such a shame to see it going downhill.

The service was good. The food was very good. I've been struggling to find an Indian restaurant that served good quality meat dishes but here the lamb curries were tender, the tandoori chicken was succulent and well cooked. The only thing I would complain about is that while I was waiting outside the female toilet, one of the male chef's came out from it?? in his cooking gear, left the toilet seat up which was covered with dirty stains. I crossed my legs til I got home, yuk!!

Ate here regularly before lockdown, and the food has always been good. Visited tonight - my first meal out since the restaurant has reopened. There was only one other table occupied, but the waiter didn't bother to use the heat plates on the table so our food was cold by the time we finished. We were then told we couldn't have coffee as they had run out of pods. Wouldn't you think they had a chance to check their stocks all the time they were closed???? Very disappointed - will be looking for another Indian to visit in future.

Well I have to make a confession, I had not been back to the Raj Douth for about 10 years. Why? Because the last time I went the decor was awful, and more importantly the food was the same no matter what you ordered. There was a rumour flying around that the same sauce was being used on every dish, just with the meat and veg changed depending on your order. Well after being convinced to try it but friends I can only say I was made to EAT MY WORDS. The place is much improved, the decor is welcoming and the staff welcoming especially the owner who had a certain “cheeky charm”. We visited on banquet night where for £13 I had a poppadom and starter of a mixed kebab, which was a large portion to say the least and cooked brilliantly with a good balance of spices. Followed by a Chilli Chicken Tikka Masala oh wow there was defo some heat to that curry but again great thick sauce with strong flavours, my only down side was the chicken was a little hard and overcooked, but overall good. Also included in the price was a rice, keema rice for me, which again well cooked and nice and moist which is nice for an Indian sometimes the rice can be to dry. Garlic nan was cooked well and did the job. All this for £13 how can you go wrong. Overall a good night with great food.

Reading through the reviews (maybe I should’ve read them first.?) t would appear that takeaways don’t score so well at this restaurant. I’d never tried this place before but did so on recommendation from my daughter who lives in Hitchin although she’s not normally a fan of spicy/Indian food. We ordered chicken balti and chicken dhansak plus Bombay potatoes and I can honestly say it’s one of the worst meals I’ve (nearly) eaten in a long while. The sauces were both swimming in oil, there’s absolutely no need for it and it made me feel quite ill despite having drained off a tablespoon before eating. The chicken didn’t seem right either, indeed nothing seemed fresh, it tasted like it was leftovers or warmed up from a couple of days earlier. I actually didn’t sleep too well that night as I couldn’t t get rid of the unpleasant taste and that ran into the next day. I just can’t understand why they would serve this up, surely you want to keep custom and spread the word - I’m baffled and wouldn’t dream of returning.

I've been coming here for over 15 years, on and off. Never for a takeaway - always a sit-down meal. This was the first time I've ever had to wait for service. We were in the back room, which usually means no difference. I don't think I've ever been to an Indian restaurant where I had to wait nearly 10 minutes to order drinks. All our ordering was delayed - possibly as we were the only ones in the backroom? The food was as good as ever - really delicious -which just about made up for the delays but if they want to get repeat service in a town like Hitchin, replete with places to eat/takeaway Indian food, they can't afford to make people think they should have just got a takeaway instead. It is also more expensive than I remember which I can understand but standards have to rise to back that.

We went to this restaurant for our 35th anniversary, and what a good decision that was. it was lovely and clean, I believe it has a 5* rating which helped us decide on which one. The dinner came we had popadoms and shared a samosa starter, 2 different rices a coconut and a keema, a chicken tikka Pathia which is my absolute favourite,a chicken tikka masala, a peshwari nan and a bottle of wine. All that and not even £45.00. We didn’t leave a single thing, hotplates( not all Indian restaurants do this) hot wipes and an after eight mint. This restaurant will now be our favourite. The staff were friendly and efficient, we can’t wait to go back again. We live 5 mins away so that’s a bonus not having to drive, but even if we had to drive there’s a huge car park 2 mins away. If I'm honest it's more a three and a half stars rather than 4 but decent nevertheless. All of the dishes were light, not bogged down with ghee or over seasoned but still with good flavour which was good for me.I doubt I'll rush back because I don't eat Indian food too much these days but if I was passing and got the curry urge I wouldn't hesitate.

Firstly I would like to point out that I have been a regular diner at the Raj Douth over the past 15-20 years and have never had cause to complain. However, onto last night.....Having met with ex work colleagues for a few drinks in town, the three of us arrived at the restaurant at 9.45pm to be begrudgingly shown to a table, and from that point on it appeared to be an exercise in how quickly they could get us back out of the front door.First up, Bombay Mix - snatched away after 2 mins as "your foods ready"Poppadoms - tried to snatch away after 5 mins, we fought them off. Must be some unwritten rule that poppadoms must be finished before mains.Curry - generally ok (hence 2 stars) with exception of the boiled egg which was like chewing on a rubber ball.Naan - burnt, dry, smothered with coriander and no hint of garlic. Oh, forgot to mention these were supposed to be garlic naans!Credit due, they did manage ok with the rice.No time to let food go down. Plates cleared, bill arrives, told "were closing". Again the stated 11.00pm closing time is obviously open to interpretation. In a taxi home for 10.45pm.Good bye and good riddance. Welcoming the day Hitchin has a curry house to recommend!

This restaurant 25 years ago was fantastic but it has had a mix of owners over the years and never quite got it right. I tried it again last summer and after ordering drinks we opened the menus to find the pages stuck together with soiled food and they were sticky to touch. It took a long time for our order to be taken, too long in my opinion. The poppadum's were greasy and had an underlying taste of old grease. Not great.I do think that they should ask before covering dishes with coriander, specially when the menu did not mention coriander at all for those particular dishes.Getting the 2nd round of drinks was also not easy, had to resort to actually going up to the bar and asking, the waiters simply ignored us.Once we had finished, it took too long before they removed the dirty dishes. I took the family there for an evening meal on Saturday. Although almost full and with a couple of very large tables, our food arrived promptly, everything was bang on, portions were generous and all seemed nice and fresh. I will probably go again but I wouldn't say it is my favourite place to eat.The service was very good as you would expect and the food was decent. I wouldn't go over the top to say this was amazing but then again, it was not poor. I think average is a fair rating for this restaurant.I think that a quiet curry with a group of mates then this would be an ideal place to go, however a romantic date or taking your parents out probably wouldn't be appropriate as there are nicer places around. It isn't the cheapest restaurant out there but the price equals the food as it was nice food. A standard Indian restaurant which does the simple things right.

I have been going to this restaurant since my sixtieth birthday, and have always enjoyed a meal there until this time........My first two visits were with the original owner, and it was excellent.A change of ownership, and you could tell......The staff were just as friendly, but the food lacked something.......Ok anyone can have an off night, but this time it was very expensive, for what my brother and I had........very disappointed.....

Avoid this place like the plague. 5 of us went last night and had the worst service I have experienced in a long time. Food was edible but only one dish (side dish) was good, the rest was more like microwave curries. We waited over an hour for our food, we weren't offered drinks on arrival, things we wanted ran out and the waiters were absolutely useless. I am angry we paid for this and did not make a complaint at the time, a foolish mistake I'll never make again. Do yourself a favour and have a tin of soup at home and avoid this place.

Sorry to have to tell it how it is but food was tasteless and overpriced. Check the price for two poppodums and you will see what I mean. The waiter was kind enough to tell me I had ordered a spicy dish. If only it had been!

We visited this restaurant recently and i must say my meal was awful, tasteless and appeared to be like leftovers. The rice was full of ghee and stodgy. We weren't even asked if our food was satisfactory. I love Indian cuisine but this was the worst Indian meal presented to me.

I have been going here for two years now, the menu has not changed though the quality of the dishes are very good of the several i have tried. It is a small restaurant, the service is excellent and in busy periods you are not waiting too long for the food. The decor is traditional a bit tired though, interestingly this feels more homely rather than clinical. The take away food is great though i'd rather eat in so the food is fresher.

Really friendly atmosphere, staff are great and always make us feel welcome. Love the food, the Chicken Korai is laden with fresh peppers and vegetables, and they have a great variety on the menu. Definitely worth a visit!

I've had a takeaway from Raj Douth a few times and liked the food so was looking forward to going in the restaurant with friends. We hadn't booked on a Sat night and went in on the off chance hoping they would have a table...they said they did in an hour. We came back at the time specified and had to wait half hour to get a table (after asking several times). Similar to the other review on here everything took forever. We had 'booked' a table at 8.30 and ended up eating gone 10pm by which point I thought I was going to pass out from hunger. Yes it was busy but it's a restaurant, they are supposed to be prepared for busy. What topped it off was when I went to the toilet (which are absolutely freezing) there was no toilet roll. I asked for some to be put in and got handed a toilet roll which I had to embarrassingly carry through the restaurant. Nice.

Went on a saturday with a group of 12. So it was very busy. Arrived at 7.20. Left at 10.35. Over three hours to get ordered and have our food. It took 20 mins to get the bill. Drinks ordered didn't turn up. The food was actually good when it did arrive.Probably steer clear of the place now. Which is a shame as I have been eating there for years. Complained endlessly about how long everything was taken but to no avail.

My husband and I visited Raj Douth on the off chance with no booking they were able to fit us in on a Friday night. It was very quiet in there with no music, a bit awkward. The food arrived very, very quickly and was delicious, although nothing outstanding!Quite a pricey meal for an indian restaurant, wouldn't go again would probably get a takeaway which seemed very popular!!

First impressions are important, but this seems to have passed the front of house here. Surly wasn't in it. The whole ambiance was destroyed in a moment. So sad, as the food and price was reasonable; no matter, there are other Indian restaurants in Hitchin with better write ups.

I popped into the restaurant to get a 'takeaway' menu during the day, and took the opportunity of getting advice from one of the staff, who was friendly and informative. The interior looked great, and well-kept.I later ordered a meal by phone, to be delivered to my home on a Friday night, and it arrived well before the '45 minutes' quoted, (which was acceptable). It was worth the wait for fresh cooked food. The meal was extremely tasty, with a good balance of spices and other ingredients; also good portions. My only negative comment is that the food was not very hot on delivery (compared with other suppliers) but after a 2 mile journey, on one of the coldest night of the year, this was to be expected.I didn't want to microwave the food, as I thought this might spoil the freshly-cooked taste.

After a recommendation from a couple of friends we ordered a delivery which arrived after about half an hour. Not bad for a Friday night!Really lovely food. Perfectly sized portions, a rice and two mains was just right for the two of us. One main was a Dansak, the other a Tandoori. Both cooked beautifully with lovely balanced flavours and just enough punch! Coconut rice delicious. We will definitely be going back for more.

This restaurant has been in Hitchin for as long as I can remember. They are always welcoming and since it was renovated last year, it is a bright nicely decorated environment. The service is always professional and efficient. The food is above average for an Indian restaurant but nothing particularly memorable. You won't be disappointed but equally it is not so good that you will be rushing back. As Indian restaurants go, it is a pretty safe bet.

Poppadum starters were freshly made with a good range of dips, unfortunately that's as far as it goes . Disappointing there after. Beers (draft cobra) were not very cold and rather flat. My garlic king prawn and aubergine was far too salty . My husband choose king prawn shashlick, and although the vegetables were good the overall dish was ruined by overcooked prawns .The pilau rice was very plain and my bindi bhajee again too salty ,and tasted reheated ( very slimy ) .

At here on early on a Saturday evening, the reviews were a bit hit and miss and perhaps they have taken the criticism on board. We had the chicken dhansak, cauli bhaji and the sizzling king prawn dish and the latter was as good as I have eaten anywhere. The food had depth of flavour ans was presented well. Perhaps the staff could be a little more professional, just a bit laid back.

Took my 13 year old son here on a Friday night. We hadn't made a reservation but that was not a problem ans we were promptly seated. The menu is varied and has a good selection of dishes. The food came out and tasted extremely fresh, compliments to the Tandoori chef as the mixed grill and Chicken Tikka dishes were great, the Garlic bread was one of the best I have had, extremely fresh and fluffy. Good courteous service and no nightmares when the bill arrived, very reasonable.

Love popping into the Raj Douth. Conveniently situated downstairs from the Hermitage, which means you can have a beer or cocktail before going for something a bit spicey.Tend to opt for a Balti, never disappointed!

I had been dining at this restaurant for at least 20 years with great satisfaction and plenty of great memories. My last visit at this restaurant the food was cold and drinks all wrong. Unfortunately this place has gone downhill, the service is terrible and the new people in there a big disappointment! The previous owner Ali, who ran the restaurant with his father who I've known for that many years! was very popular with all the customers. Ali was the best!! Service food everything. Now the new owner is deceiving people by stating he was the original owner. For heaven's sake! You were not the original owner.Noticed the ridiculous comment below.Well Mr.Original owner get your act together and sort this establishment out. Starting with the food service and stop trying to deceive the customers! Everyone knew Ali.I now dine at the Paprika which is undoubtedly the best Indian in town. After Ali sold the Raj Douth.

I have been a long term customer and have recommended this restaurant for well over a decade.Until tonight. A friend and I went here at 1030 pm to be treated to a bunch of waiters playing on their I phones. They made us feel so welcome, by informing us that they closed at 11pm and proceeded to rush us with our meal with a mixture of contempt and complacency. The food was average and the service non existent. it gives me no pleasure in writing this, as the Raj was a Hitchin institution.I can only put this down to the fact that the old owner Ali sold the business. He was a true Gent who knew the importance of service. I do not expect, or want overbearing politeness, but tonight was a total disgrace.Well done Mr new Ray Douth owner, you will never be seeing me in your establishment and I will make sure all my friends who loved this once superb restaurant will be advised what a shadow of its former self this place is now.

Rahmon is an excellent business owner and very welcoming! the lamb samosas are some of the best ive had in the uk and the different curries are delicious . The stand out for me was the peshwari naan it was so good i went back again the next day just to have it again its sweet and soft almost like a desert . Highly recommend this place, the onion baajis are excellent and crisp perfect size . i will be back to try your tandoori skewers and other dishes that rahmon recommends and ofcourse to once again eat that delicious peshwari naan

I (a Brit) live in the USA now and the curry over there is just bad. My American husband and I flew back over for a wedding and were craving a curry. On the way to Suffolk from Heathrow we decided to pick a curry house on our route and thankfully landed in The Royal Bengal. It honestly was the best curry I’ve ever eaten. We picked out 3 dishes and 3 naans so we’d have plenty to take home too. The service was excellent! Even the coffee was delicious. I think every time we fly back to the UK, we’ll end up stopping here.

Fantastic meal, we stopped in during a long journey South - much prefer an actual restaurant to service stations. The staff were friendly and the food was brilliant. Thanks!
