Rasa Sayang Chinese & Malaysian Restaurant in North Hertfordshire

I had seafood noodles and chicken wings they tested funny, it’s tested bad out day, I was 2 days sick, poisoned food and my family. Never happened before it was my favourite restaurant but I’m not coming back.

Went with friends for lunchtime meal at this very popular restaurant. We were given a warm welcome on arrival and shown to our table. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The menu is comprehensive authentic Chinese, mostly Cantonese, (and not aimed at the sickly sweet European taste) an amazing range of starters, combo dishes, sea food, beef, chicken and duck platters to choose from with vegetable and rice dishes all beautifully arranged and served. There was a very good drinks listing both alcoholic and soft as well as different teas. The quality of the food is evidenced in the diners being mostly local Chinese people. The restaurant has comfortable seating but as it is so popular the tables seem to be very close sometimes impeding service. The toilet facilities were spotless but up a very long steep staircase. Parking has to be some way distant as the restaurant does not have any parking. As the restaurant is on one level disabled access is okay from the street, but toilet access could be a problem. Children are made welcome.

My spouse ordered the same meal she had about a month ago, totally different taste, I order a thick curry sauce meal, have something that tasted sweet and sour so not good. I don't think we will come back if we don't get what we ordered. Shame tho sadly.

Disappointing food, almost tasted old - squid and prawns were tough. Also, they now request cash payment when placing an order…. make of that as you wish. Will now look to go to other restaurants/ takeaways

Was so looking forward to having a nice take away not been there since the previous owners left . But so disappointed with the chicken balls they was tuf chewy no taste also the batter not great most went in the bin also use to love going to this place to get the chicken satays in peanut sauce again chicken tuf sauce no where near as good as previous owners done them . So unfortunately will not be going back unless this changes .sorry don't want to be a moaner but this is how we found the chicken .. the other food with it excellent.......

Surprisingly superb food and service. We had never been here before and had no expectations. It reminded us of the wonderful traditional Chinese restaurants we used go to decades ago in London. All the old favourite dishes and lots more too, a very extensive menu in fact. The food was superb quality and very large portions too. The chicken was tender and succulent which is rare in restaurants and the asparagus was crispy fresh. Its amazingly cheap too. The restaurant was busy considering it was mid week. Great service, really friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

We've been here lots of times and love it. The food is always good and lots of it! The service is usually excellent but had the odd time when staff have been really busy so interactions with customers felt a bit fraught.

Love the salt and pepper chicken wings here. The best I've ever had. Staff are lovely and friendly always eat here.

We've had take-away from Rasa Sayang many times over the last couple of years, it's our favourite Chinese in Royston. The menu has a lot of variety. Food is prepared very quickly especially on week days, typically 10-15 mins from ordering to collecting! We haven't dined in the restaurant so unable to comment on that aspect.

This was the first time we had a take away from the Rasa Sayang. The food was ready on time, and was very good, the service was very friendly. I will be going there again

We really enjoyed our visit. The food was excellent and the staff were very efficient and attentive without being intrusive. We live locally and shall certainly return.

How much more would they charge to add seasonings in their food?

Been here a few times but as now under new management thought we would give it a go to see if it is still good. The food was lovely and just as good as before. However the service was very disappointing. One lady in particular we found quite rude. She took our order whilst looking very distracted the whole time by another table, repeated our order yet the noodles didn’t arrive and had to be asked for again. We had our starter and main in a total of 30 mins and we were constantly being spoken over and rushed At the end, we went to pay and this lady came straight over, interrupted my conversation with the male employee and aggressively said “service is not included on the bill” implying that we should leave a tip. There was no thank you, no happy Christmas, no checking if everything was ok just that she wanted a tip for the appalling service she delivered. Such a shame as this has put me off coming back.

Great friends service and lovely food

We visited early on a Saturday evening, when it wasn’t busy. Overall we were a bit disappointed with the food due to quite small portions for the money charged. We found the chow mein to be very greasy. We also ordered a portion of chips (for my young son) and some spring rolls which came from the fryer, which had the distinct taste of old / dirty oil so made them pretty unpleasant to eat. The duck was nice (although the garnish looked old and dry, I suspect had been used before…) and the rendang curry tasted nice but was served lukewarm. The service was efficient and friendly but a little rushed and we just felt the whole meal was overpriced for the standard. It wasn’t the worst meal I’ve had out but I wouldn’t rush back.

Service was excellent and very quick, food was delicious, atmosphere was cosy and comfortable. Definitely coming back!

Update Sept-23. Saturday night, prebooked dinner. Excellent service and very busy. Seems to be the place to eat! Food delicious as ever. Brilliant food and service. Don't know about atmosphere as have only used for Friday lunchtime takeaways. Telephone order from car on return from London and hot food waiting at the counter within a few mins of arrival. There is free on street parking nearby but not on the same street. Lovely people, lovely food and good value.

My favourite Chinese in Royston. Take away is always busy which is a sure sign in not alone in loving the place

There's an old saying "Fast and cheap, not good. Good and cheap, not fast. Fast and good, not cheap." I've never met a place that breaks that saying, until we tried Rasa Sayang. At first we were a little suspicious, they make the food so quickly and cheaply can it really be good? Yes, the food is amazing. Every single time. The staff are lovely, though we've never sat in only had takeaway. If you need good, cheap food and fast. Rasa Sayang is the place in Royston. I'm amazed they aren't more well known outside of Royston!

Wonderful meal at Rasa Sayang with attentive staff and a nice atmosphere. Good portion size and tasty main meals plus the Peking Duck is always a winner.I lalso love the fish dishes- the steamed fish in soy sauce is very light and tender if you want to try somehting a little different. We have previously loved the fish in oyster sauce too . Jo was very friendly even though it was a busy Friday evening. We will be back!

Absolutely fantastic! We ordered for collection last week for the first time and every dish was fantastic! Rarely can you find somewhere that does brilliant Singapore noodle and Phad Thai! And the half crispy duck was genuinely the best we have ever had, ever! Even the sweet and sour sauce was great quality and not overly sweet/syrupy. Thank you very much! We'll be ordering again in a couple of weeks!

Went here for my dad's 60th birthday. Had booked (always advise booking for large parties) for 6 of us. The first notice they got it was a 60th was when one of my relatives showed up early with balloons for it. We had an amazing experience the food was top quality and the staff were so very nice and really made sure we were having a great time. At the end when the bill came to be paid we were asked to wait a minute and my dad got some free Bailey's ice cream with a candle and everyone sung happy birthday, none of us knew this was going to happen the staff just did this! He was genuinely smiling and on the way back in the car he said it was such a good time and he really genuinely appreciated the effort the staff and the nice touches they did! I 100% whole heartedly recommend this place and we will be back again!

A group of friends went to Rasa. Some for the first time, others the first time for in a long time. Good service. Food freshly cooked. Wide variety of dishes. Reasonable prices. Everyone left happy.

Having recently moved to Buntingford, we wanted to find a great Chinese restaurant. Well we found it, we've been collecting takeaways from them for the last few months, which have always been excellent. But we decided to eat at the restaurant and weren't disappointed, the food tasted even better coming straight from the kitchen. I have absolutely no problem in recommending this restaurant, keep up the good work Rasa Sayang.

Went few days ago with friends for her birthday and food was nice but all through the night we were rushed with our food we spent over £100 and after we had paid they wanted us out I was still eating and they took the bowl away from me while eating then the lady with her coat on come and told us to leave now as they are locking up this was just after 10pm and they should be open till 11pm there was 2 other people in restaurant and they were also not happy and had a moan at the staff who were not bothered as they wanted to leave same the old management is still not there they were very nice. And we would off never been pushed out like that very disappointing

We had a lovely meal here for my son’s birthday after school. The staff were so lovely and had decorated our table with birthday sprinkles and a happy birthday sign. The food was excellent and the service too. The staff were so lovely with the kids and allowed us to bring cake and they lit the candles and sang happy birthday at the end of our meal. Thank you for making my son’s birthday special. Looking forward to coming again soon

Very friendly staff, lovely food. Was our friends birthday & they decirated the table & gave our party of four complimentary desserts or liqueurs. Also sang happy birthday. Always a nice experience there.

Beautiful food, lovely staff, great menu. I live an hour away and will 100% be returning. A lot. We spent £68 but we were ridiculously greedy and had to take quite a bit home with us so I reckon £45-£50 is probably more realistic for two people.

This place is advertised as Malaysian and Chinese food, we took.a detour on way home to try the Malay food ... Was nothing of sorts - laksa was noodles in curry, roti canai was half cooked frozen paratha served with a curry gravy you expect...

My second meal here and again I tried a few new dishes, each was as good and as tasty as the last, with great service and prices, it's a really good place to visit.

What an amazing take away. A wide variety of options on the menu. A full range of gluten free food available, even the crispier food that others often do not offer! Good size portions and all tasted delicious. Will definitely become a regular!

I always order my monthly take away from here. Generous portions, delicious, authentic food. The Pad Thai in particular is my favourite. Staff friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to eating in one of these days!

We've ordered many takeaways from Rasa Sayang now, and each one of them has been superb! Their food and menu choices stand out from other Chinese restaurants and is so delicious. If you're considering ordering from here I would 1000% recommend them! The tea smoked chicken is amazing!! You have to try it! We also love the ribs in capital sauce and the sweet and sour chicken Not only is the food fantastic, but the customer service is always wonderful. We always get a warm welcome when we visit. We ordered the Duck, rice noodles, Yellow bean sauce, Pork Ribs and Black Bean sauce. When ordering we asked the server on the phone which dishes could possibly be made safe for someone suffering from celiac disease, he was very helpful and talked through the options available, which dishes weren't safe and which were, or could be made safe with a few adjustments. The food overall was delicious, our only complaint was that the Beef in black bean sauce was very very salty, to the point we wondered if they'd been an error whilst cooking.

My daughter ordered takeaway and on arrival the manager recognised her and asked why had we not ordered prawn toast without the sesame? (I am allergic to sesame seeds) She answered saying it was too short notice, nonsense he went to the kitchen and made the toast without the sesame seeds.Brilliant service, great food would not hesitate to recommend.Thank you for being so kind

Four of us arrived here early on Monday evening, the restaurant was empty, Eat Out to Help Out had finished, there was just one customer waiting for a take away. However, we carried on in and were greeted by a smile and a warm welcome; the waiting take away customer told us it was the best take away in the town.We were asked to sanitise our hands and then shown to a table, we quickly chose the Oriental Feast at £24.50 each together with a couple of beers and red and white wine.On ordering the waiter asked how hungry we were, very we said, we haven’t eaten all day was our response, well you do get a lot of food with this feast are you sure you want it for four, maybe have it for three.We were hungry and went for the dish for four, some 90 minutes later having had tasty, well cooked, clean food, chicken, prawns, lamb, vegetables and duck, we realised that maybe we weren’t as hungry as we thought as we tried to eat everything not wanting to waste such great food.The service was excellent and attentive without being over powering, we had time to digest each dish and were asked if we were ready for each course before it was freshly prepared for us.Only one other table was occupied but there is no reason not to go here, great food, service and experience

Went here for my mum’s birthday and it did not disappoint. Very flavoursome and delicious food served in decent sized (I.e large) portions. A very extensive menu. Best tasting chinese we’ve had in a long time. There was also great service, with very attentive staff. Good ambience in the restaurant also.

Needed a takeaway on a Tuesday when our regular takeaway was closed and we were so impressed we’ve been back already. The food was delicious, piping hot and generous - did us for lunch the next day too. Must say the hygiene measures and attention to social distancing on payment and collection were excellent.

Excellent Chinese cuisine also have some Thai dishes too. Unlike another subscriber, I did not feel as though I was being pushed to finish my meal quickly. I found the ambiance very conducive to an enjoyable meal and evening. The service was excellent , welcoming and friendly

The service here is great - the waiters were all very enthusiastic and quick. we were pleased to see it was busy, but we didn't have any trouble getting a table. Rice cooked well, I can also really recommend the soft shelled crab as a starter and the sweet and sour prawns.

I have lost count of the times I've been to the Rasa Sayang. Every time I go there, I am treated as though I am a friend.

Service was great, the manager even brought us a tray of desserts on the house. Lovely food. The staff could not do enough for us. There were 8 in the group on a busy Saturday night and they never stopped smiling.

Had an amazing evening and the food was divine, very well looked after all night table service and the manager himself bought us a tray of free champagne and drank and chatted with us at our table, I work in central London and most restaurants wouldn't offer such service, food was delivered in good time, very busy restaurant so would suggest you book early especially of a Friday or Saturday evening.

Saturday dinner with friends. Always been welcome so much by the staff. The restaurant is full up but the service always been spot on. The foods is excellent and is my friends bday , the staff giving him a surprise with a small cake and a birthday song. Always enjoyable when visiting this place. Thanks for Lee and his staff.

Fascinated by the number of reviews that have stated they have had perfect service. I have never experienced such grief at the hands of the waiters and waitresses. Impolite welcome, and was even told to “sit down” whilst removing jackets. When putting in drinks orders, we were hurried to the point we were told to “be quicker”. Whilst in the restaurant we actually tried to book into another local Chinese restaurant but it was too late due to the disgusting service.The food was actually very good, but I feel sorry for the back room staff and chefs who’s tips must be affected by the rudeness of the front of house staff.Do not recommend, will not be visiting again.

We absolutely LOVE this restaurant. We drive all the way from Welwyn Garden City just to eat here as we don’t have any decent oriental restaurants near us. The food is always wonderful and fresh, service very friendly and efficient, interior is beautifully lit with a relaxed and very pleasant atmosphere, nice background music. Rasa Sayang is perfect for couples or party bookings. Can’t wait to return!

Just a main course for Saturday lunch. A Mayaysian Red Curry, Malaysian Kung Po Chicken and King Prawn noodles plus a portion of egg fried rice. Service was friendly and attentive. Food tasty. Looking forward to next time.

Came here as the Jolly Postie had some issues with deliveries and could only offer a limited range of Pizzas. Had been here some time ago, and forgotten how good this place is. We went for the middle priced set menu and there was more than enough for the 4 of us, tasty, well presented and service was excellent.

We are regulars here to both eat in and takeaway and have always had a fabulous meal. However our last takeaway was a huge disappointment. In particular I ordered the duck in a garlic and chilli sauce. I probably had three pieces of duck meat in the entire dish and about 8 chunks of soggy duck fat. It was absolutely disgusting. I appreciate duck is an expensive meat but I'd rather pay more for a good quality dish than end up with that.

It’s amazing that restaurants as good as this really exist! It’s a first-class restaurant at normal, High Street prices. What a brilliant place for friends and family to meet & eat!

Have had takeaways from here before and always been good but tonight the food was terrible, the beef dish had 2 bits of beef and the rest was vegetables, the chicken dish had 4 small pieces and looked under cooked, don't think we'll be rushing back! Not great

We haven't been for a while, but I must say the food has even got better than it was before. The mixed starters were close to perfection. Highly recommend the tea smoked chicken & seaweed. Might have to go back next weekend for my husbands birthday, we have both been craving chinese all week.

To be fair.. we have never eaten in at this restaurant but have had many recommendations by friends. After many years of looking for a half decent Chinese restaurant we finally ordered a takeaway from here.. we live about 10 miles away in a very rural area... all I can say is that it was worth the journey... 3 more visits and i have to say.. excellent.. friendly and timely service with great food.. I only give it 4 stars because we have not actually eaten in... we definitely will do so...

Eat here regularly and always enjoy our meal. Although we tend to stick to one of the set menu options which offer variety and good value. Service polite and efficient. Like I say never disappoints.

We live locally and have been using the restaurant for many years but recently we have found it not to be as good as it previously used to be. We do like the food there so on our return from holiday we went there again. We received a friendly welcome and seated promptly. We had a Set Menu for two which was very good. Service was efficient and friendly and we did enjoy the food,wine and evening.
