The Hunters Lounge Bar provides the dining area for guests with dogs. It’s a dark room, with wasted opportunities, through poor design, providing no access to the awesome gardens. Seating with tables is provided to sit outside the front of the hotel, in the car park, however this was predominantly used by smokers. The Bar Menu includes a selection from the main dining room, but the first evening we ate in the Lounge, the service was extremely slow with mistakes being made with other diners’ orders, such as starters and main courses arriving together, soup arriving without the bread & the latter only arriving, when prompted, long after the soup was finished. On the two other occasions I ordered a snack, they did arrive promptly and accurately. A key benefit of the Lounge Bar, during a muggy stay, was the much appreciated air conditioning, not available in our bedroom.

We went to Hunters at the Keep for my 70th birthday meal. The restaurant lacked atmosphere and the waiting staff inattentive and abrupt. The wine was 'plonked ' on the table not opened or poured, we had to request water and pour our own wine. The clearing of the table after the first course was messy and again we had to request the table be cleaned - completely lacking in any care or detail that should be the norm in a restaurant. The food was cold , poorly presented and odd a chef trying too hard but not getting the basics right. The manager was polite and went some way to pacify us by not charging for the wine. We left without having had a full meal and our expectations were certainly not met.

I had high hopes for this afternoon tea as it looked spectacular on the website and with a minimum price tag of £21 (double what I usually pay for it at any local cafe) I really thought it would be something special. Unfortunately I was let down. The sandwiches were nice (even though I had asked for ham and my sister had asked for smoked salmon) which she was looking forward to, they came out as ham / cucumber. Don’t know why my sister didn’t get her ordered smoke salmon but anyway. Moving on to the scones.. they were not freshly made that day, clearly had been reheated in the oven for a few minutes as they were stale inside and rock hard on the outside. A tiny stingy pit of clotted cream was provided with them and 2 pots of jam (no chopped strawberries) which you might expect to receive given the price tag. You would hope the desserts / cakes would be considerably better? The raspberry jelly pot had raspberries on it that were green and mouldy. At this point I was really starting to get annoyed. I could of got a nice fillet steak at a pub for the price I paid for this below average afternoon tea. It certainly didn’t reflect the ‘quality and luxury’ as portrayed on the website. I took my mouldy raspberries to the waiter and explained. He seemed confused as to what to do, took it away and then came back to ask me if I wanted another one, I said yes please. So eventually another one came (baring in mind the restaurant area had 3 other tables of 2 dining at the same time) all paying £21 PP, is it that hard to supervise the quality of food leaving the kitchens? What on earth would they of turned out had the restaurant been remotely busy? Considering 8 people were dining for afternoon teas., that’s £168 minimum for 8 lots of tiny average sandwiches, stale scones.. and mouldy raspberries, the macaron was nice, tasteless choice pastry with tasteless chocolate mousse in it and a carrot cake I by this point couldn’t be bothered to eat. Certainly nothing grabbed my tastebuds and gave me a huge smile. I will stick to the value for money and excellent quality afternoon teas from my local cafes at £10 per person. Massive shame. Oh and the staff could not care less about my experience as I explained whilst I was there, might of been slightly appeased if they had knocked some money off the bill. However are people really that gullible to pay for such poor quality food without saying anything? I gave two stars as the building is attractive / clean and the gardens are kept lovely. Staff seem quite attentive apart from when you complain or point out mouldy food then don’t really know how to deal with customers expecting high standards.

We stayed at Raithwaite Estate for 3 nights for our silver wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived, we received extremely friendly and attentive service - a real warm Yorkshire attitude. Nothing was too much for them - from arranging for flowers to be in our room from my husband, chilling the champagne we'd brought - to ferrying us to and from the spa in the golf buggy. Everyone was happy to chat and seemed to really be bothered that we had a good time.We ate at the new Brasserie - new chef, amazing food. No really, amazing. I had the duck - my recommendation...have the duck! I embarrassed my husband by asking for some bread to mop up the sauce - but the waitress understood! It was truly delicious.Room was in the Keep - nice and quiet, clean and warm. Lovely verandah. Gorgeous bathroom.Breakfast was very good - the first day was best, but only because it was the only day we hadn't stuffed ourselves the night before. I was very impressed by the standard of the food wherever we went. So, if you get the chance - book here. The beach is a short walk away, the spa is decent, the food is excellent. It's perfect for a romantic getaway.

We had an enjoyable stay despite the really snowy conditions. The staff were excellent, keeping the paths clear and ferrying us about in the buggy to the car park. One young man was even using a leaf blower to remove the snow from the cars! Thanks for that. The spa was clean and pleasant though there were only limited changing facilities. All staff were very friendly and helpful. The only reason we didn't give a 5 star was because of the maître de in the Brasserie who was over familiar and not even at his station when we arrived for our pre-booked evening meal. He asked to try one of my chips! I should have said ok and seen how he would have responded. Later he was very condescending to my husband who had asked what was included in the tarte tatin.'What do you think? Give it your best shot' Was the reply received!!! A totally unacceptable response. Apart from that, the food for the evening meal and the breakfasts were lovely. The rest of the restaurant staff were excellent.

We dined in The Brasserie this weekend. Staff were attentive and the menu gave us plenty to choose from. I had a pate starter, with only two tiny pieces of toast. I did ask for more, and this wasn't a problem, they came within minutes of me asking for them. My partner had French Onion Soup and thought is was tasty. The mains were a steak for my partner, again, which was cooked 'just right'. My 'Whitby Boulillabaisee' was lovely and light. We had a bottle of wine, which was just right for the meal too. Overall, it was just really enjoyable. I will go back and would have not problem recommending to you.

The Raithwaite Estate was an unexpected hidden gem and is somewhere we are already planning to return to.Having chosen Whitby as a last minute destination for a reunion with two other couples from across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire we struggled for accommodation in the town itself and as the Raithwaite Estate is only a couple of miles away ( 10 minutes & £7 by taxi ) we booked for the one night Bed and Breakfast .( Saturday 6th May ).Two couples chose the standard double rooms and one couple chose a deluxe room. Two of the couples arrived mid morning and we were greeted in an extremely welcoming manner by the front of house team. From the doors being opened for you, to the offer to store the luggage until the rooms were available later and the offer to take the car to the Car Park for you the first impressions were excellent - and the rest of the stay continued in the same vein. Once checked in the receptionist offered to book a cab for our short journey into Whitby and indeed recommended ( and booked for us ) a cab for our already booked meal in the town later in the evening.Following a very nice afternoon in Whitby we returned to find the rooms were ready as promised and the luggage already in the rooms that we had left stored for our return. We were asked if this was our first stay and as it was we were given a comprehensive tour meaning we were not only very impressed with the cleanliness of the internal and external areas of the hotel ( the grounds, gardens and lake are immaculate not to mention the excellent Spa facilities ) it negated the need to ever use the information books in the room as you so often have to do in other establishments. All of the rooms were very clean, spacious and well equipped with all couples reporting an excellent nights sleep on the enormous comfortable beds. The following morning we had an excellent breakfast with the Whitby Kippers and the Full Yorkshire Breakfasts being particularly well received ( The local sausages and Black pudding needing a special mention ! ) and then we decided to walk the beautiful grounds and on to the sea front in Sandsend. Once again this is were the service level is shown as the ever present Guest services manager Simon came into his own with a recommended walk and even complimentary umbrellas as the forecast was for a shower ( which actually happened and the umbrellas were gratefully put to use ).Having recently posted a review of a hotel that fell short in service ( and by the way was nearly 3 times the price ) Raithwaite was the complete opposite and deserves more recognition in my opinion. All in all the experience was one of a great team wanting to provide great service so that you wanted to return again and all that I can say is a massive thank you to Simon and his team and from us all -mission accomplished !

Visited here for dinner recently. Dinner, the tasting menu was a pure delight, service in the restaurant was excellent (though through the many courses four different waiting staff delivered which detracts from the "personal touch", in my opinion) and all courses were nicely presented. It would have been a perfect evening had it not been for poor service in the bar where, when I complained about a short measure of champagne had been delivered, the server was close to rude and quite discourteous in reply. I did complain to front desk staff (very rare for me to be so upset as to have to do so) but I am sad to say nothing was followed up. But for this tiny "hiccough" I would have said that the evening, totalling close to £200 for two, would have been well worth it. As it happens it spoilt our evening and the lack of any follow up to a well intentioned complaint leaves me doubting commitment. Never the less - a nice place in a lovely setting and with a most minor of tweaks in customer care it should be able to guarantee 100% quality. Will I go again? Yes, but it's not an absolute favourite, sadly.

When we enquired about this the waiter said the kitchen were baking the scones for the tea ! Why no scones ready? When it came the afternoon tea was good although fairly simple, hot tea was also served again, the waiter did try to make up for the slow service by offering a glass of prosecco which was thoughtful of him.The overall experience was somewaht marred by slow service and could have been so much better. Also at £21.00 per person is a bit expensive when a 3 course Sunday Lunch is advertised for £19.95.

Booked 3 nights here for a special birthday.first impressions were good, lovely gardens, clean entrance and a friendly welcome. Doors opened for you, cases taken and placed in our room. We're told our room had been upgraded complimentary which was a nice surprise. On entering the room it was nice, decent outlook, large, plenty draw and wardrobe space, large bathroom with lovely underfloor heating that had a bath an separate shower with choice of rain or normal shower head. All very nice for first impressions. Then I noticed the amount of dust on certain furniture items. The large double bed was 2 singles pushed together so we got the ridge down the middle. Tea and coffee in the room as expected but cheap branded coffee and 1 biscuit to share. Not what I expect for the price label. Used the sauna and pool area that was very nice. Clean and relaxing. Comfy loungers to lay on and read or snooze, shame no coffee or tea facilities. We ate in the brace restaurant that was good, was expecting more of a fine dining experience but in my opinion while the food was good the presentation was not. Breakfast was excellent, good choice of good quality food with a choice of sitting in the restaurant or conservatory. The conservatory was lovely with excellent views of the garden but sadly spoilt by the dirty windows. Rooms are cleaned very late in the afternoon which means if you have been out most of the day or spent day in the spa and want to relax in your room you can't. One day we had to tell them not to bother as after sitting in the lounge paying a fortune for coffee the room still had not been cleaned. Over all this hotel is nice, relaxing but I think it needs some attention to detail for the price they charge.

We visited recently for Afternoon Tea, having looked forward to our visit. We were shown to our table, and there we waited for some considerable time to see any service staff. When eventually one did appear, we selected our tea and waited, again. It arrived, and we had drunk the entire pot before our food arrived. The churlish waiter served our food, and we expected him to come back to ask if we required anything else (mayonnaise; mustard; salt & pepper etc) at which point we would have requested more tea. No visit was forthcoming. In fact, we sat for close to 1 hour without seeing another soul. No one inquired as to our satisfaction or well being, and we left without a word from the reception staff, who was busy having an in depth discussion & giggling and laughing) with another member of staff, who didn't even look up to acknowledge us.The setting is stunning, and from what we saw of it, the hotel seems to be lovely, the food was ok, but nothing extraordinary, however, it is completely let down down by the poorly trained and rude staff.

We booked dinner in the restaurant for a special birthday celebration, having had a fabulous meal a year or so previous. On arrival we were taken in to the conservatory area of the restaurant which was cold and had no atmosphere whatsoever. There were only two of us and plenty of space in the restaurant, but thought it was maybe reserved for guests staying at the hotel. We were asked what sort of water we would like and ordered that and two glasses of champagne. Two minutes later, the same waiter came back and asked "have you chosen your food yet?" We'd only been sat for a couple of minutes and had not received our drinks, so asked for the champagne to be brought first and we'd take our time looking at the menu. When the drinks arrived, they were slammed down on to the table. We were not informed what the soup of the day or the fish of the day were, so had to ask the waiter back again. Our starters arrived, mine was beautiful, my Mum's was a salad which looked a mess and was far too big. Main course arrived. Mum had pork, I had duck, My duck was mediocre - a little bland. The pork was disappointing - the piece of belly pork had a huge bit of fat on which could have been taken off and crackled, not just left on. With no sign of any of the waiting staff, we ate our food, and it was only until we were almost finished that a different waiter came to ask if everything was ok. We spoke about the pork, and the chef was asked about the fat. He advised it was slow cooked, so would not produce crackling. Both myself and Mum are avid cooks, so if we were cooking slow belly pork, would remove the top fat altogether before serving or crisp it up in a hot oven, not just leave it on.We had quite a bit of wine left as we had been rushed through our first two courses, so I ordered a pudding and Mum ordered cheese. Before these arrived I had to ask for the heating to be turned on in the conservatory as it was absolutely freezing. The pudding was wonderful - the best part of the meal. When we ordered our bill, this came very quickly, but then we were left with it so long that we ended up going out to the reception to pay our bill. We did make the reception staff aware of our experience and hope that this was passed on.Overall, we were left feeling disappointed, especially by the service. When you are paying high prices for food, you expect excellent service as well as great food. We received neither of these.

We stayed here for my birthday on a Sunday night. We were made to feel special from the moment we arrived, the front door of the hotel being held open for us and offers for help with our bags. We were shown to our room (in the main hotel building) and given a mini guide/history of the building and were shown how to open the velux windows/alter the under floor heating, which was a nice touch. The room itself was specious and simply but elegantly decorated. The bathroom was equally big, with a separate bath and large shower. We used the pool facilities, which were very pleasant. Sat in the jacuzzi you can look out the window at a little man-made waterfall. The pool is a good medium size, as you'd expect from a hotel and the sauna and steam room were also good. The changing rooms were clean and tidy.We also ate at the Brace restaurant, after a relaxed drink and read of the newspaper in the bar. Food was very good, we ate two starters (lamb koftas and an alpine cheese tart), followed by two filling mains (I had chicken in a very tasty, garlicky sauce). It's a real treat to be able to wander around the gardens and take a walk to Sandsend, so we loved the location.I would say that whilst the hotel isn't cheap, it is worth it - I would recommend looking out for deals as they do occasionally crop up on their own website.

My husband said the beer was typical hotel beer flat with no taste ..... that said it didnt stop him having a couple more, I was driving. We then went through to eat, we had a choice of where we wanted to sit the restaurant or the conservatory. We opted for the restaurant again a pleasant area. The waiter was excellent he couldn't do enough for us ensuring we had a high chair for the baby. Our meal was excellent it was hot and very well presented. We were served quickly but not rushed. After a disappointing lunch (cheese sandwiches after we specifically asked for no cheese...and little apology?) we were hoping for better at dinner. Unfortunately a mixed bag of young and clearly untrained staff seemed to serve our table. Menu was great and food wasn't bad (steak wasn't great and not convinced that it should be the 'special recommendation') but we had to ask three times for a bottle of water and in the last occasion we were told by the waiter that it wasn't his fault as he had asked a colleague - acceptable, err probably not when you consider the prices. Some tables had the luxury of getting their wine served to them but we didn't? Wine was good though to be fair. Can't complain about the food but no wow factor and very average service.

Went here as part of our stay to celebrate a special occasion - service was excellent, wine excellent and all 3 courses were excellent. However we both had the Sea Bass from the catch of the day specials served with steamed potatoes, samphire & hollandaise sauce - it was perfect and one of the best plates of food that I've ever eaten. Good sized dining room and a nice place to eat - cannot recommend it highly enough. I would eat that dish at least once a week for the rest of my life if I could!

Myself and 2 friends booked in for afternoon tea. Upon arriving we had the choice of the conservatory or the bar. We opted for the conservatory as we got a view of the gardens. Sadly we were the only people in there. It was deadly silent. No music or back ground chatter. We were left in the room for 20 minutes before we were asked if we wanted a cup of tea. After tea arrived we then waited another 20 minutes and had to call someone over to ask what was happening. We were told that our food was being made. There was no menu or choice it was what you were given. We then asked if we could have drinks. To which a drinks menu was then brought to us. We ordered some prosecco which was lovely. The food eventually came and looked beautifully presented. Per person we got 4 sandwiches. One cheese and pickle. One cucumber. One ham and mustard. One smoked salmon. Then the middle tier was 2 scones and a macaroon. The top layer was 4 more cakes. All rich and gooey. If you have a sweet tooth then this is for you. But for me it was way too much cake. Most of the top layer was untouched which was a waste. We had a walk around the gardens afterwards which was beautiful. I would recommend the venue but I was disappointed with the experience. I hoped for more. I wanted a bit more pizazz and atmosphere. It was reasonable priced at £21. It would be nice too to have a choice over the sandwiches. And more savoury options would be great. Bit of background music and maybe some staff who were more attentive.

Advertised as a small luxury hotel the initial impressions live up to that description. Set in large grounds with formal gardens and a lake, it is a beautiful location. Well groomed and pleasant reception staff gave an excellent welcome. The room (306) while functional and contained facilities you would expect, such a coffee maker, ironing board and television, it was lacking anything that could be described as luxury. There were no windows giving a view of the outside only velux skylights which were grimy and needed cleaning. The on suite was spacious and ideal but let down by some of the grouting in the shower having turned dark grey. 10 minutes with a grouting pen would have enhanced the appearance. On opening the wardrobe and the room safe an empty bottle of vodka was found - presumable left by a previous guest but gave the impression that the room had not been thoroughly cleaned. The fitness room in the spa was small but contained treadmills and exercise bikes but sadly there were no wet wipes to clean the machines after use. A gel dispenser was empty although there were sufficient towels for personal use. The visit was part of a large group (12 people) and the catering arrangements were excellent on the first two nights. A varied and extensive menu was provided by pleasant and efficient staff. However on the third night 6 people order baked halibut for the main course. On its serving it was not only boiled rather than baked it was under-cooked. 5 of the 6 were returned as inedible. All declined for the meal to be reheated. The restaurant staff were most apologetic but the chef did not make an appearance. No other alternative was provided. On departure from the hotel a discount on the bill was given to some guests but not for others - this only became apparent after leaving the hotel. Overall the hotel had great potential and is in an excellent location but the experience of the visit was let down buy the above issues. Many are small but they add up to an impression which is not 100% favourable but with a little effort could be remedied.

Service is as high as expected, food is very good and all types are catered for.The beds are something to behold and with all the travelling I do this has to be the best bed I have stayed in for a long time. The bedrooms to are done to a very high standard and the toiletries are high end products. All in all, if you are looking for a very high end place in wonderful surroundings to celebrate and occasion or just treat yourself then this is the one for you.

We have been to Raithwaite a number of times before, and it really is a lovely place to stay. However, we previously had cause to complaint because we were placed in The Keep when we actually wanted to be in the main Hall. However, this time we stayed in the Hall, as we insisted. The beds are very comfortable and we both had great nights sleep. The bedrooms are very pleasantly decorated, with an overall sense of calm and relaxation. Breakfast is fabulous, and there is no rushing people out. We had the kippers, which were perfect. The USP's at breakfast include the rhubarb, the flapjack and the occasional strawberries dipped in chocolate. On this occasion we did not dine at Raithwaite, but we did have pre dinner drinks in the bar. On previous occasions we have had a little dish of roasted nuts to accompany the drinks, but not this time. Those little touches are the kind of things that make the expensive cost worthwhile.

This was our third visit to Raithwaite Estate for Sunday Lunch and this was by far the best we have eaten. Good choice of starter, main course and dessert - we opted for chicken liver parfait and the crispy ham hock with poached egg for starters - both were superb. For main course we chose the roast beef and the roast pork, again both cooked to perfection. The choice of vegetables accompanying the meals was second to none. Could only manage one dessert between us so we opted for the sticky toffee pudding - it melted in the mouth. The restaurant staff were very attentive and polite. I mentioned that the reason for our visit was because it was my birthday and received a decorated plate with chocolates and Turkish delight with our coffee - a lovely touch. Well done Raithwaite Estate - a meal to remember!

Came here recently on a wedding package, food was quite nice, but standard fodder. The bride invited me back on a day trip to Whitby, we came here for lunch, big mistake. Upon arrival we were not greeted so we wandered the building in search of some seating/bar type of area, we ended up in the restaurant, which is a nice setting overlooking a huge garden space and the grounds themselves I guess. We were eventually given menus and offered drinks. I had a latte which was well made, its quite often just ridiculously milky, so I was pleased with what I got. We ordered the Raithwaite ploughmans and a Caesar salad with the addition of Ham, which I thought was a bit random but willing to give it a go. 45 minutes, yes forty five minutes later a couple of plates are dumped on the table. Waitress clearly having a bad day, as her waistcoat looked like it had been attacked by a mayonnaise bottle. So for the 45 mins wait, I basically chewed my nails. My friend had considered eating a sugar cube. The Caesar salad was missing anchovies and the crouton element was sadly lacking some crunch. The ham still baffles me. It didn't work. For 45 minutes I was expecting the most amazing ploughmans lunch of my life, after all its essentially just some salady items, some meat, cheese and bread right? Also for the £14 I'd expect it to be big enough to slide a ham sandwich into my handbag for an afternoon snack. Pretty much the only homemade item on the plate looked to be the piccalilli. Surely you have a pastry chef to make a pork pie? Even the bread was not made in house. It was ok, but you could do so much better. Onto desserts, we were still hungry even though the Ploughmans is meant to be shared. I don't share my food. My friend had what was essentially a sticky toffee pudding, but it had some other name. She said it was ok but then went on to list its faults, so perhaps not great! Mine on the other hand was what I classed as a complete train wreck. Treacle tart with raspberry sorbet. Now I am a dessert snob and admit that. But raspberry sorbet simply does not belong with a treacle tart. Something creamy should be with it. The pastry was ok, but wouldn't have passed the soggy bottom test on the Great British Bake Off i'm afraid. The filling was a nice, which I scraped off the soggy base, the sorbet I had to put on my latte saucer and eat that as a palate cleanser, as sorbet and tart, were like chalk and cheese. The bill came to £40 without adding our drinks on. Won't be heading back in a hurry.

Warm welcome on arrival - not very busy in fact there were only 4 other couples in the bar that I could see!! Told to find a table the drinks came 10 minutes later bearing in mind there was no one else at the bar! We ordered 2 soup and a ploughman's platter to share, ten minutes after we ordered we were informed that the soup had changed from potato & leek to carrot which we both did not fancy so we cancelled the soup order, so we waited and waited the ploughman's took 45 minutes to arrive which at lunch time is not acceptable, we had to get back to Pickering by 2.30 pm & the meal arrived at 13.50 pm giving us very little time to enjoy the meal! - It was nice but we left very disappointed with the time we waited.

We had a mixed stay here, and for once i struggle to write a fair balanced review. I booked for Friday 13th (maybe a bad omen!) for early Valentines as sat 14th was full. A few days after booking I got an email saying i could upgrade for £30 each to the Valentines Package (dinner, rose, chocolates and half a bottle of champers). I called, no one answered, but i left a detailed VM asking for someone to confirm. This never happened. I emailed again a few days later asking for confirmation. I got an email basically saying " don't worry someone will have done something about it". This was hardly the confirmation I sought so i emailed back asking for CONFIRMATION. I got a reply addressed to the wrong person telling me the restaurant was full but they could help me find somewhere in Whitby to eat! My response was "what the?" ! So, not knowing where we were going to be eating that night we set off and arrived the next day. We were met in the car park by concierge Simon who, like a lot of reviews here, deserves all the praise he gets. Friendly, not over powering, informative and genuinely a nice bloke who straight away i felt i could have a beer with. Reception staff were friendly and welcoming too. I explained about the dinner confusion and just wanted to know if we had it or not. She confirmed it was ok as it was only Saturday they were booked (confused.com) but anyway, sorted. We went to the conservatory and had lunch as the room wasn't ready, food great, but service lacking. Food took a long time to come, "is everything ok with your meals?" came as i took pretty much the last mouthful and then the empty plates sat there for about 30 minutes until Peter, the other brilliant concierge, happened to walk through and took them. The restaurant was EMPTY apart from us so what the staff were doing ill never know. We went to the room and no sign of the rose, champers or chocs. I telephoned and asked , do we get those at dinner or in the room. They apologised and brought them up while we went for a spa but again, hy did it take me to chase ? Spa is nice but a very "droney" aircon/fridge compressor or something ruined the peacefulness of the massage. We also had to wait literally 10 mins in Spa reception for someone to turn up so we could order a couple of glasses of prosecco. Dinner...excellent food (thank you Chef) but the service was lacking in detail. wrong cutlery, dropped a fork, never brought a replacement, food just dumped in silence. Some of the staff were young for sure and the training or proactive overseeing by the restaurant manager is lacking during service which results in this poor attention to detail. He indeed was a nice guy that looked after us but some of the staff let him, and the dining experience created by the chefs down. There is a bigger list of other little niggles that brewed in to a disappointing nights stay here which is sad because I had been wanting to stay here for sometime. We are usually short notice people based on business demands and this place does fill up quickly it seems. However, the BY FAR biggest issue was that from early morning there was doors banging frequently - kind of a dull thud but very regularly. We thought it was upstairs so after 45 mins of suffering it at 7.30am i went upstairs in my dressing gown to find the culprit and knock on their door. it wasn't upstairs in the end, it was the kitchen door below our room. There was therefore no escape as breakfast was being served. So, instead of our lay in and breakfast in bed we were awake with an annoying muffle banging that stayed in my head all day. (..avoid room 104!).We did give the Manager Martin the opportunity to come and listen and to address the other issues before we checked out. I prefer to do it that way than just rant here. However, although he listened and was apologetic, I found us then having a debate about the "upgrade" cost of the food because apparently i shouldn't have even got the email about the £30 ea upgrade!! Mine should have been £65 ea because i was only on B&B tariff. So...why did i get the email then and why should I pay for their mistake?!? He did wipe off the evening meal cost stating he had therefore knocked off £170 but in my eyes he knocked of only £60 because THATS what I was offered and fully expected to pay. I guess without the sit don feedback session / complaint that would have been an interesting debate on check out too. I refuse to pay for other peoples mistakes and bad communication with customers. The whole organisation at point of booking has been messy to say the least and it continued afterwards. The communication between departments like reception and restaurant seems lacking because even though we had upgraded no one seemed to know, even the girl that knocked on my door and asked me to sign off £170 at 11.15pm! All in all it was just a list of annoying little things that rolled up in to this being "hard work" instead of a relaxing break we needed from our busy lives. It was always us constantly chasing things and even having to correct people about their own packages. We went there to relax and the hotel failed in delivering that to us, but we paid the price. It does not quite seem fair really. room: £205 B&B (but were awake from 6.45am ish)Lunch: £61.90 Spa drinks: £20Spa massages: £70Drinks in bar/wine: £67total: £426 for one night of poor attention to detail and poor sleep quality. . I found £60 for food (not included above) as a derisary insult and demanded I paid for it instead. This turned in to a debate itself but I didn't pay it in the end as they kept on insisting, it was getting nowhere as a debate and there were other people checking in so i didn't want to embarrass the staff or spoil someone else's stay. Bottom line though, even after a few days reflection, I do think it was too little compensation for the catalogue of issues that spoilt our stay. I had given feedback in a polite and courteous manner sat down with Martin the Duty Manager and we were also offered an upgrade next time we go but, sadly I don't think we will, and likely neither will our business contacts who were waiting to hear whether its worth it or not. Usually I would be prepared to be proven wrong but with the insulting compensation we will no doubt not bother. Its a real shame, i SO wanted and expected more. The building, the grounds are beautiful. The front of house staff are all friendly so we are both genuinely gutted by the response of the management in wanting us to one back and spread the good word rather than negative ones.

Mixed reviewThis place is like the emperors new clothes. We were so excited to go away after a very tough year.... this was both a special 40th birthday and a wedding anniversary . We couldn't wait but .. Had a long dark foggy journey and arrived at 8pm in the pitch dark ,unfortunately none of the signs of the drive can be seen in the dark so we pulled up at the first building we saw + got our bags .... we were 'greeted' by the receptionist whose first words were 'oooo it's so chilly when you come through that door ...you're in the wrong place ' ( the keep ...) .we got back in the car and went on to the hall.We Spent £600 for 2 nights in a delux room ( bland and chilly ) it had the most uncomfortable sofa .. We couldn't sit and watch TV on it at all ,there is nowhere to sit and blow dry hair ...you have to stand in the hallway. There is one small cafetiere provided ,meaning you can only make 1 coffee at a time then you have to wash it for the other person .we found 2 single beds even though I booked a double ( our wedding anniversary) staff are kind but you feel demanding asking for all these things to be rectified. The loo in our 'deluxe ' cottage is on the ground floor with the window (clear glass ) looking right out on the car par and reception ! No chance of opening the blind and letting daylight in then!Afternoon tea was frustrating ...we had booked a time but still had to wait 35 minutes for sandwiches to arrive ....the waitress when we sat down and said we'd booked afternoon tea said oh would you like any drinks ....(yes dear we're here for afternoon tea) ....so maddening ,we heard a waiter say to the next table who were there for champagne tea ...'we have no chilled prosseco do you mind' ....we had cloudy pint of black sheep later on that had to be sent back ,but wasn't taken off the bill .......it's that kind of place .Sorry ...but now for my big gripe ...£250 for B and B and I have to queue a la travel lodge style for my breakfast ...with no mushroom no beans no tomatoes left in the servers ...so I stand in the middle of the dining room, but they never came and after 5 mins my food was cold by then on my plate so I gave up .....there's a chef at the ' egg station ' standing frying eggs with a pan full of hot oil ...at waist level ...a health and safety nightmare if ever I saw one ,keep away kids .....it's a ridiculous set up .....crammed into a corner with a queue a mile long ...sorry not my idea of 4 star AT ALL. The place feels like it just opened yesterday .....did it ? Staff are very nice . I have given the place three trip advisor ratings because the food is excellent ...lamb curry in the bar - fantastic ..steak fantastic ,then halibut and lobster in the Brace Restaurant fantastic .So great chefs .The place is also VERY CLEAN .

What a fantastic place to visit. We only came for a meal to say thank you to my in laws for every thing they have done for bus and to just do something nice for them . When I called to book the restaurant I explained what it was for and the member of staff arranged for a little extra surprise die the table along with helping us organise flowers for the table. On arrival for the evening we went to the poachers bar and ordered drinks. Whilst in there we were invited to watch the fireworks that were about to start but we declined. On arrival at our table for the evening we found that we could see the fireworks without leaving our seats which was a lovely extra touch. The food we had was delicious and the service excellent. Nothing was to much trouble for anyone. We all throughly enjoyed our meal and the staff helped to spring an extra surprise by bringing out a present we had dropped off earlier for my stepfather in law and also whilst waiting for our desserts to arrive they brought out chocolates on a plate with Thank You on. This was just the icing on the cake. It wasn't our fist visit and it certainly won't be our last. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

I organised for my partner and his family to visit Raithwaite for afternoon tea and use of the spa for his 30th birthday.Firstly the estate is beautiful, the grounds are immaculate and the new building work is fitting with the landscape and history of the estate. On arrival we were greeted by friendly door staff who took us to our table for afternoon tea. The weather was great so we sat outside, the gardens are stunning. We ordered the champagne afternoon tea which was great value for the quality at £30pp. Only little niggle was that the champagne should have been brut, and we were bought standard champagne. The staff were friendly, attentive and went above and beyond to find someone to give us the history of the hotel when we asked how long it had been there. The food was of a high standard and they served unlimited teas/coffees and extra sandwiches and cakes for no extra charge. Couldn't fault it all. After lunch we visited the spa which was again lovely. Clean, quiet and with lovely staff. They need to make the hot tub and pool a little warmer though as it was a little too coldWe all had a great day and we're looking forward to returning.
