Excellent service. Brilliant Landlord. Fantastic locals. Everyone made us feel incredibly welcome. Food was great and a lovely cosy atmosphere. It made our trip, to find this absolute gem of a pub in a beautiful Welsh village. Will definitely be back. Thank you for your hospitality John.

If you are nearby, visit the Railway Inn. Staff are very friendly, beer selection is good, mix of local and national, and the food is great. Just what we needed after a days walking in the hills. Can't recommend it highly enough

Really, really great evening for our visit to Wales. Curry night was lovely. Fresh food made by the landlord (who is a trained chef), perfectly pulled pints and a great atmosphere. John and his team know the meaning of hospitality, couldn't have felt more welcome. There was even a treat for the dog! 5 stars, would give 10 if we could.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were recommended this pub in the welcome book of the cottage we were staying in, in Abergynolwyn. We were just staying for the weekend and of the three nights only decided to eat out on the Saturday night. We went over at 6pm. It took at least 5 minutes for the bar maid to actually acknowledge us, no ‘hello or I’ll be with you a minute’. When finally spoken to we said that we would like to have dinner and she said you have to book to go in the restaurant (which we were not at all aware of) not ‘have you booked?’, ‘sorry, we’re fully booked’ or ‘I’ll see if we have any tables free’. I assume the restaurant wasn’t fully booked as it was empty when we walked past the window on the way in and out of the pub. She then said we could sit at one of the tables in the bar area. We chose what we wanted to eat and went to the bar to order. This time it took at least 10 minutes for us to be spoken too. The barmaid was constantly walking to and from the kitchen which appeared to be miles away. People sat at the bar were also commenting on how slow the service was. The food arrived in good time and the waitress was friendly. We had a burger and a beef lasagne. The lasagne was burnt and the burger was very dense. Both served with a lot of chips. Neither of us finished our meals. The thing that annoyed me most of all though was that a family of 4 came in after we had ordered our food and asked if they could order food. The barmaid then said that she would see if there were any tables free in the restaurant. Surprise surprise, there were and off they went into the restaurant. The responses from the pub to negative reviews on here appear to say ‘why didn’t you mention this on the night?’. Well to that I would say that you shouldn’t have to complain about things like this and even if we attempted to we probably would have been waiting at the bar to do so. I don’t like going out and having to complain about things. I guess we just won’t be going back if we visit Abergynolwyn again.

Reasonably priced for the standard and size of the meals. Our only suggestion to the pub was, that the restaurant was too cold, it could do with being a little bit warmer. we did warm up as the meal progressed and the room filled up, it wasn’t necessary to bother the busy staff with this moan. Would definitely return Thank you to the staff for a lovely evening

I think the reviews on here must be from all their friends as my experience in this restaurant was awful. Extremely poor service, didn’t get asked if we needed anything, (we did but no staff available to ask) no steak knife, gristly steak, couldn’t ask for another drink (and didn’t get asked if we needed one). When we asked a question about the menu it all seemed too much hassle for the staff to bother to find out for us. Made to feel uncomfortable for asking and no real answer to the question. Food overpriced for what it was.

We didn’t book as we didn’t think it was necessary on a miserable evening at the beginning of April, however we were lucky to get the last table in the bar, which was exactly as I remembered it back in the 1980’s. The atmosphere was perfect for a country pub which is so lacking in all the gastro pubs that are popping up everywhere now. The menu was varied without being extensive, and there was a good specials board.the wine was excellent too. We both had vegetarian lasagne with chips and a small but interesting side salad. The pudding ( sticky toffee & butterscotch pudding) was perfect. We chatted to the locals and enjoyed the evening so much we are going back tomorrow. Many thanks.

I went here with my husband a few weeks ago. The staff seemed rushed off their feet but there was only 3 tables taken!? Starters were quite nice although my husband had prawn cocktail, loads of lettuce and only a few prawns, no lemon, we did try to ask for some but it fell on deaf ears! Main course my husband had chicken covered in cajun spices, quite nice but chicken overcooked so much it was really dry, it was on a bed of iceburg lettuce and that was it! We complained but no apology, just offered something else but I was already half way through eating mine and after all it had taken ages! We asked the bill but noticed that one of the starters had £1 added to it, when we asked about it the waitress said it was the 'till', we mentioned that we had visited a few weeks before and the same thing happened, and we mentioned it then but they obviously haven't done anything about this issue. Stopped at The Railway on the way through after reading generally good reviews for a Sunday lunch. Nice welcome when we went in, seated promptly, staff seemed to be a bit frantic...maybe a bit short? Anyway, lunch arrived and I have to say it looked disappointing, two tiny and very burnt roast potatoes, a teaspoon of mash, and meat that looked of the vacuum packed variety, uniform shape and thin. There was an excellent selection of veg and that was well cooked. Unfortunatly taste was greatly lacking, the meat tasted of nothing and ditto the veg. We had Eton Mess to follow...and all that I can call that is lazy and definitely not Etom Mess. Pudding bowls full of tasteless squirt cream with a few bits of broken up meringue and a few desultory strawberries on the top. Not good. I wonder if it was the chefs day off as reviews generally seem good. Doubt we will be passing this way again..but we wouldn’t bother with The Railway.

Very nice village pub that we were looking forward to having many meals in however for the whole of our stay 1 week the most decent of their lagers was 'off'. and even though it says 'dogs welcome' it wasn't really welcome as much as allowed in one small uninviting and very cold room, there was a restaurant which obviously you wouldn't expect to take your dog in but also a very nice bar with log fire and comfy seats but we weren't allowed in there...so we went a little way down the road to the Cross Fox which is a fantastic pub and welcomed dogs in the bar which had a log fire and lots of people eating in there-spotlessly clean and lots of choice with proper home made food and a great curry night on a Friday, as there were four of us we spent quite a lot of money in there over a few evenings which would have been spent in The Railway Inn, as there was no one in The Railway during the week you would have thought they would have been a bit more accomodating. We got talking to some people who said the food was poor so we hadn't missed anything-and it only improved when you were in the restaurant.

I try not to write negative reviews but I feel that as a dog owner it is important that you get a good sense of where you can and can’t go. We had been personally recommended The Railway Inn and upon checking with their website found that it was a dog friendly pub, so we went out of our way to visit. Unfortunately the “warm welcome” we had been led to expect was far from it. When we enquiried if we could take our drinks into the cosy snug, we were told a rather curt no. There is only one space available for people with dogs and that can best be described as a starkly lit ante-room between a very nice looking restaurant and a welcoming looking snug. Here the radio blares rather loudly, and quite oddly plays Heart London where you can find out how the traffic is moving on the M25. Quite a juxtaposition to the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of the village of Abergynolwyn. I can’t speak for the food, which did look good on both the menu and the specials board as it didn’t feel right to spend our last night on a long table (the only other table was impossible for someone of 6ft to put their legs under) with our dog in the car and so we left. The ambience at The Railway Inn left a lot to be desired and the reception was continually frosty rather than welcoming. A real shame as this would otherwise be a wonderful spot for people who enjoy walking their dogs in the numerous beautiful surroundings.

We had dinner twice with the family. Great food, the lamb was just amazing! Kids loved it also, and the fire place in the entrance is really nice.

We were on our annual Christmas time off road bicycle ride based around the Snowdonia countryside. Starting in Dolgellau, a perfect halfway point in the ride was Abergynolwyn. I Had a few Facebook messenger chats with the Railway Inn a few weeks before, and explained we might be slightly muddy cyclists by the time we got to the pub. Not a problem at all, and we arranged a table for 10 of us in the bar area. I also had a phone conversation beforehand to confirm our numbers, and what was on the menu. When Sunday December 17th came, it was heavy rain, and our group got absolutely drenched by the time we arrived. We were made to feel very welcome, indoor bicycle storage was made available to us, and a place to hang our soaking wet kit. We were then welcomed into the bar, and started on the first round of drinks. We were really looked after, and even given towels to help us dry off.

Visited for Sunday lunch on a cold but bright day. We chose to eat in the Ingle bar which was very cosy with a welcoming open fire. We chose to have a two course lunch; I chose the beef with horseradish roast dinner followed by syrup sponge with custard while my wife chose roast pork with apple sauce followed by treacle with ginger tart and cream. Both main courses were excellent with tender meat, tasty gravy and appropriate trimmings; stuffing and horseradish with the beef and apple sauce and crackling with the pork accompanied by an excellent selection of perfectly cooked fresh vegetables both roasted and boiled. The puddings were exactly as described and perfect for a cold day. The staff were welcoming, friendly, attentive and efficient.

We called in for a family Sunday lunch and the food and service were both fantastic. The good was cooked and prepared to a high standard and the gravy was exceptional! My little girl was offered a high chair and we were made to feel very welcome and comfortable. Great pub, great staff, great location, great food! We will be back.

We were staying locally and decided to try the Railway Inn as we wanted to try somewhere different to eat. The food was absolutely fantastic and definitely one of the best meals I have had out in a long time. Highly recommend the place. Lovely pub and restaurant and we will definitely return next time we are back

We go to Abergynolwyn on quite a regular basis and love it there. Our highlight - apart from the fantastic walks around there - is always a meal at The Railway Inn. It's a bit pricey for us, but we will have saved up for it, and we know we get a very good meal there. This year we even went twice in a week. Booking is essential, though, as they are very well frequented. Inside, dogs are only allowed in the entry area by the bar, not in the restaurant. The food is yummy, but not excellent, don't expect too much. Portions are good. I had a 10 oz steak with peppercorn sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection, very good piece of meat indeed, but the sauce was tasteless and disappointing. I had to add salt to give it some taste. My hubby had also steak with stilton sauce, and he loved it. His steak was perfect, too. The other meal I had two days before that was ravioli in tomato sauce. It was tasty, but more sauce than ravioli, and too little cheese. Not very fulfilling meal. The salads come with dressing from a bottle, I'm sure, although I can't prove it. The usual french style dressing, which doesn't do anything for me. I usually take my own dressing with me.

Whilst all else was OK, they wanted to charge us £1.00 for using a credit or debit card, which whilst a small amount perhaps, was not acceptable to us. This is going to be illegal from January so hope they change their practice before then!

We had a few days off in our motorhome, so travelled to Abergynolwyn. Popped in for a drink on Wednesday 30/08/17 - choice of 3 real ales + lagers, etc. Booked table in restaurant for Thursday. This is one of the best meals we've had. Well worth the visit. Congratulations to all the staff for making our visit worth while. Will be back in 2018

Popped in for Sunday lunch after seeing some good reviews. Quaint pub and very clean. Choice of meats we had beef and lamb, very big portion with lots of fresh veg and 3 different potatoes. Barman very friendly and helpful, he overheard us talking about a wheat allergy and advised on food swaps including gluten free gravy. Food and beer was very good and a lovely waiter serving food. Would recommend and return.

We visited here twice during the mid week break. One the first occasion, we had excellent food, beer and srvice in a traditional country pub. The second time was similar but the service was poor as they were busy and seemed to prioritise the locals first!

We visited last wk & were disappointed. The inside is dark & dated, definitely needs a refit & the tables are squashed in the pub area. The barman, presume Landlord was unfriendly & unwelcoming, which was a shame as we had hoped to eat there frequently on our holiday but never went back. We wanted to eat in the restaurant but were pushed towards the pub side instead, presumably as we had young children. We were even made to feel awkward because we had a buggy with us, there was no room for it according to the Landlord - even though we arrived at opening time & were initially the only people in there! We felt so unwelcome my husband even felt he had to nip home with the buggy to get it out of the way!! We would have left but no where else nearby. The food was very average & very overpriced. For a bar meal for 2 adults & 2 small children it was approx £35 & none of us particularly enjoyed it. Disappointing & not family friendly.

Turned up after a long drive as I've been here twice in the past. Turned up pub empty which at the time of evening 6pm was overflowing each time before this was dead. Landlord was a snotty person. None of the normal pub grub. Under new ownership and food well over priced. It's a pub after all not some posh restaurant. So we left disappointed. In which the guy behind the bar said. 'BYE' In a bad tone. Don't bother with this pub unless u like to pay well over the odds.
