We were deighted to find fish and seafood on the menu here because on our last visit a few months ago we were chatting to the waitress about the menu being entirely meat based. Both my husband and I chose the prawn starter and the monkfish main and we enjoyed each course. Each of the desserts we chose were meringue based, pleasant but rather basic for the price. The staff were firendly and efficient.

Went for their Carvery meal to celebrate the Mother-In-Law's 90th birthday and had to pay a deposit beforehand as had a party of 15 (not heard of that before) and also had to book our meals in advance. With being registered Coeliac with a Gluten-Free diet I have to know they can cater for me to which they weren't really very helpful with the wording going along the lines of "we think we can cater for you" which for the prices they charge is not really the attitude you would expect. I ordered their Carvery meal and a G/F crumble & custard. We turned up today and were told the crumble wasn't available so what was the point in ordering in advance? I went for my carvery and had to enquire at what was available to me only for the chef/server to have to ask what there was grrrrrr. The Yorkshire puddings were right next to the roasters and all the customers were taking them with their tongs OVER the roasters which would've then caused cross-contamination when bits fell into the roaster tray! Those said roasters were rock hard by the way! The beef I had was gristly and that gristle would not cut with the knife, the turkey was dry and I struggled to chew and swallow it, there was no white normal mashed potatoes but a mocked up mash of carrot & turnip so don't know if there were any potatoes in it really! I then had an Eton mess for pudding and it was so sharp with the jelly/juice it was unpalatable! So, I didn't have a nice experience at all really!

I had a starter and main for about £16. Dessert would have been an extra £4. Everything was cooked and okay for me although my Thai spiced salmon fishcakes were actually without detectable spice compensated by a chilli dressing on my leaves which wasn't pleasant, but my compadres were upset about dry burgers and an odd soup. I said they should complain but they decided not to. Second visit - first time I had the veg curry which wasn't bad at all.

Been here before and chosen meals from the menu and they have always been excellent. Called not realising that they had a very limited menu due to having a carvery on a Sunday. The carvery was nice but not very warm. Some meat had run out and there was only one choice for vegetarians. Will definitely go again but probably not on a Sunday.Staff are pleasant.

I've eaten here a few times and did so again tonight.Has a very good menu and a lot of choices. Eat in the restaurant or the less formal bar area around the fire. Al'a carte and table d'hote options. Extensive wine choices.Presentation is very good as are the flavours. The soup and fish were very good indeed. As a guest they do a very enjoyable breakfast too.Service was good, friendly and attentive. Can't fault the place or the food. Lovely.

Delicioso. Excelente relación calidad-precio. Lo recomiendo y pienso ir de nuevo.

Came today for late lunch early tea, I managed to get the children together without partners which is very hard work now a days. Are table was booked for 5.15pm, we ordered drinks at the bar then was shown to our table. At this point I must say the restaurant wasnt not busy. The wait time for somebody to take our order was a long time coming. Food ordered, when it eventually came we asked for some butter on the table, 10 minutes later it arrived. There was quite a long wait for the main meal,3 of us ordered the carvery and my son ordered the risotto. Next thing I knew my son's risotto was being placed on the table , which then meant he would be eating as we then had to queue for our carvery!! The risotto was tasteless and was like boiled rice with a few herbs thrown in The meat on the carvery was very poor, I went and got steak knifes to cut the meat! 90%of the food was left, all of the carvery was just awful. The head of house was embarrassed and agreed with our complaint. I will never go there again.

We visited the holt lodge last weekend and had the 2 course carvery for £9.50 the soup and carvery was tasty. It did make me laugh when the girl asked us if we wanted a sausage and oblidged with a solitary sausage which was about a inch long,my girlfriend asked for more so one more appeared on the plate,Why have them on offer if they are so tight with them. There was plenty of staff in the restaurant and they were all very pleasant but i could not believe that when i ordered our drinks it took 15 minutes to arrive that is with three staff hanging around and a barman who did not seem that busy.We will visit the restaurant again in the future but it could be a while till our return.

After 25 minutes we was taken to our table there was food on the floor around the table from the previous dinners. Myself and my son ordered steak but to be honest wasn't worth the money. Whilst you was eating your meal a waitress hand would come in between you and take a empty glass. The food was poor and definitely not worth the prices they charge' the service was not up to scratch we had to ask for steak knives, we was asked what sauces would we like with our steaks they never came with the meal.OverallPoor serviceAverage foodPoor vegetarian menuWe waited over 2 hours for our food.Would I eat here again ? I visited the holt lodge on a Saturday night with 5 family members. The restaurant wasn't even half full which we thought was odd but after our experience made sense! The good was awful! 3 had the cavery all said the meat was dry and there wasn't much choice in veg. We also ordered lasagne, steak and pulled pork. My husband had the pulled pork he really enjoyed it and it did look like a nice meal. Same couldn't be said for my lasagne or the steak. Mine was cold the steak was over booked. We sent them back steak came back under cooked and what was meant to be fillet looked a lot like rump! My lasagne came back they had chucked it in a bowl and mushed it up was so dry and there was hardly any meat. Overall very disapointed!

Called on the off chance for the offer after 5pm.. should of realised when the room was nearly empty what we were about to get. we were offered the soup of cauliflower only to be told it had been changed to veg.after going to the table and hearing 2 other tables complaining things were cold and something else wrong with the meat, our soup arrived or rather strange dishwater with finely chopped veg in (cant say it was horrible) but it was rather strange.after piling our plates up with the carvery my hubby was pleased to see mash only to be found it tasted like frozen mash that stuck to the roof of ur mouth and the gravy that always used to taste homemade tasted rather like granule gravy which I cant bare.the rest was ok nothing special but nothing to complain about really, it could of been hotter and a bit more tastier..When I think at how booming this place used to be it was such a shame its a lovely setting and the staff are very pleasant and I know we went later in the afternoon but it should be jammed packed with the offer on after 5pm,i don't dispute they may of been busy earlier but sommit needs sorting ....come on holt lodge sort yourselves out and get it back !!!!

Very disapointing when i arrived i was told i was a day late so a full charge had been taken from my bank by showing my receipt i was able to show i arrived on the correct day it seems someone decided to alter my booking on their computer so not a good start then not sure if we have any rooms oh yes the rooms you should have had are still available, we booked a table for 6 o clock for the carvery however after we had waited 30 mins i asked a waitress why we had to wait for a Carvery she said the veg needs reheating,a party must have been going on upstairs so rather noisy the room was fine .we had a very good breakfast but all in all not a very pleasant visit the barman was very good and polite but there was not enough staff at the evening meal session some people walked out they were fed up of waiting. I will not recommend this place as i did not like money being taken from my bank account i was made to feel it was my fault they had got it wrong

Had afternoon tea several times out before and after seeing photos on here and reading the review I booked a groupon for 4 people, thought as my nan is 80 years old and not very mobile id take her and my mum out for something different as I had always enjoyed other afternoon tea's and with my nan being quite fussy having a selection of cakes and sandwiches she would be bound to find something she likes... She ate one finger ham sandwich and half a scone. The place looked tired, we got served our tea in odd dirty mugs, we're not given any tea spoons to stir tea, the finger sandwiches consisted of 1 ham, 3 salad sandwiches (just salad) and 2 salmon. Cakes were syrup sponge slice, chocolate brownie slice, profiteroles and a 'badly made scone' as my nan commented. Felt disappointed with it as ours looked very different to the photos on here and offered my nan a chippy dinner as she was still hungry, at least she enjoyed that!

Recently visited holt lodge, soup was cold, carvery ended up being gammon, belly pork and in edible beef we could not cut or eat . Took a very large doggy bag home! Since on of our party had crones he could not eat any of the meat with two pork options!! 3 of our party had the a la carte belly pork which we paid £4 more for, however, this was available on the carvery. The veg were poor and warm (just). This is the 2nd bad meal we've had here. We booked last time at 4pm so we thought if we book for 2 pm this time it would be hotter (wrong). The strange thing is it has been empty both times!! Speaks for itself really! I decided not to complain on the day as my father in law had recommended it so I phoned the next day, I presume because I have already paid and they have my money (all £330) that is the reason why no body has phoned me back!! So customer feedback and service lacks as well. hugely disappointed spoilt the birthday party!!!!! Never going back

Having not visited the Holt Lodge for some time we thought we would give ourselves a treat based on past experience. The treat didn't last long, the much awaited Wrexham lager was flat on inspecting the glass I just hoped the inside was cleaner than the outside. We were called to the carvery the beef looked excellent and also the veg. On arriving back at the table the Yorkshire pudding was cold and could have been mistaken for a Frisbee the roasters were cold and hard, along with the rest of the meal. We just got up paid and when asked was everything all right I told them no not really which he didn't look too bothered about just took the money £55.00 and we went without even entertaining the desert we had paid for.

We went here on the May Bank Holiday weekend and having walked a good hour to get there in the sun we were keen to get some refreshments. The bar staff were pleasant enough, albeit it one staff member was particularly rude and pushy in his eagerness to press us for a decision on whether we were just drinking or eating. As a large group of 15 (adults & children) he stated he needed to know our plans and that the chef might not be happy should we decide to eat. After the walk to get there, we simply wanted to order some drinks, relax and contemplate our options for the evening. The manager did apologise for this rudeness and reassured us it was not a problem to take our time in making a decision, and along with the other waiters she was quite pleasant. We did decide to eat, and the carvery menu does have a decent selection, although the Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes lacked in quality what they had in size. The chef was nice enough though and did not seem concerned by our group size one bit. His assistant however did not seem in the best of spirits that day, and responded to a cheeky recommendation from one of us that he try and crack a smile with "I don't feel like smiling today", hardly the cheery customer service you would expect on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We would return to sit outside in the garden and have a drink, but only because there aren't any other nearby alternatives from the local campsite we stayed at.

For my neice 18th we all went to holt lodge Saturday 6th April, fifteen in the party had the 2 course carvery for 8.50. Veg soup (allegedly) was served,it was disgusting, tasted like burnt oxo, without any doubt in anyone's mind...It was the days leftovers liquified into a stew like putrid pulp. Most returned it...including table behind us. We were then told we can have the sweet instead. Carvery...long wait, good meats, very poor roasters rock hard,so much so the fork couldn't get in,carrot batons bendy,no mash, parsnips hard, gravy was awful, everyone was very disappointed...the worst was yet to come folks...as we were moving the food around the plate,my 71 year old mother gave me a nudge,I looked at her as she was gagging whilst pulling out a footlong black hair from her mouth!!!! We all declined the sweet!!! Shocking! Never again.

After a long absence from the Holt Lodge we decided to have another go at the "Sunday Carvery" The experience left me in no doubt it hasn't improved, the Staff were pleasant enough at first but then it became overbearing the left hand didn't know what the right was doing. for example Three times we were asked if our food was ok by three different staff, cutlery was given to us only to find someone ells trying to do the same a few minutes later. Staff trying too hard only then having the bill given to us without asking and before we had finished our coffee. As for the food very poor, Roast potatoes undercooked, Carrots like rubber, mash stodgy the gravy was tasteless as was the Yorkshire's however the meat Was ok.It was obvious to me the staff was over compensating and over zealous in their actions their intentions were correct but with no coordination between them it became overbearing I couldn't wait to get out of there it will be a very long time before we return. It's a shame because it's a nice venue.

Must first state that previous visit to Carvery was extremely good, hence the decision to book for Mothers Day. Unfortunately following this visit we will not be returning. On arrival we were informed that we were in the Garden Room not the restaurant. This was a typical bland function room with no atmosphere. The food serving station was squashed in a corner by the door. Instead of the separate servings of hot vegetables served at the table that we had last time, the vegetables were buffet style. They were overcooked and Luke warm into the bargain. To top it off the restaurant had hiked up the price to £19.95 fixed menu ( no option of 2 or 3 courses) I presume to cash in on Mothers Day. There were no extras included in this price, no serving of bread at the table or coffee at the end of the meal. Came away feeling ripped off for such a mediocre meal.

This pub is no longer an Indian Restaurant/ Pub It has been taken over by a very reputable company and is being run brilliantly by Nancy Jones and her under manager Gemma. Mike has been kept on because of his excellent input. The pub has been rejuvenated since the new regime , and now is a truly Community pub. I have been regularly using this pub for 52 years and have not seen it this good since the days of the Moores and Bob and Sue. Good luck to the new management and roll on when the kitchen re-opens even if it’s only for bar snacks.

Don’t we all love a spoons? Had a lot of good times in the north and south bank spent with friends. Very good value and the food is surprisingly nice. Sometimes the queue can be edging on the ludicrous on a Saturday night but that’s the same with everywhere. The only real downside is that it isn’t open 24/7!

Great service prices seem to have increased though, same as everwhere. Never get the half a chicken order right, they nearly always give you garlic sauce and coleslaw even if you ask for gravy and peas.
