A Taste of South-west Coastal Indian Cuisine at Quilon As a food enthusiast, I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Michelin-starred Quilon, a restaurant that offers a tantalizing glimpse into the diverse and flavorful cuisines of Goa and Kerala. The Weekday Set Menu I had the privilege of experiencing was a true culinary adventure, showcasing the rich and nuanced flavours of Southwest coastal Indian cuisine. The meal began with two exquisite starters. The Broccoli and Spinach Galette in Plum Sauce was a delightful combination of textures, with the crisp, golden-brown pastry encasing a creamy and flavourful filling. The Baked Halibut coated with Malabar Spices served with curry leaves and kokum, was a delightful display of the restaurant's mastery of seafood preparations. The fish was cooked to perfection, with the spices adding a depth of flavour that complemented the natural sweetness of the halibut. Moving on to the mains, the Manglorean Chicken (Kori Gassi) Curry was an absolute standout. The succulent pieces of chicken were cooked in a finely ground fresh coconut-based sauce, infused with a medley of aromatic spices. The result was a dish that was both comforting and bursting with flavour. Next, the Kothu Lamb, with its marinated lamb pieces sautéed with onion, chilli, ginger, and tomatoes on a scorching hot griddle, was a true testament to the chef's culinary prowess. The blend of textures and the intense flavours left a lasting impression. The accompanying side dishes were equally impressive. The Asparagus Beans and Edamame, sautéed with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chilis, were a delightful play on textures and temperatures. The Mango Curry, featuring fresh mango cooked with yoghurt, and green chillis, and tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, was a delicate and refreshing palate cleanser. And the Malabar Paratha, a soft, layered bread cooked to perfection with pure ghee, was the perfect accompaniment to soak up the rich curries. To conclude the meal, the Bibinca, a Goan speciality served warm with ice cream, was a fitting end to this culinary journey. The warm, custard-like texture of the Bibinca paired beautifully with the cool, creamy ice cream, leaving a lasting impression on my taste buds. I forgot to mention the Mango lassi was simply divine and the mocktails were refreshing. Throughout the entire dining experience, the service at Quilon was impeccable. The team was attentive, and knowledgeable, and ensured that every aspect of the meal was perfectly executed. I would highly recommend Quilon to anyone seeking an authentic and delightful exploration of southwest coastal Indian cuisine, whether it's for a casual catch-up with a friend, a business lunch, or a memorable date night.

We first read about Quilon a couple of years ago as they offered a tasting menu accompanied with beer instead of wine which sounded interesting. We finally got round to visiting and were not disappointed. After an excellent cocktail each in the bar (the Qojito is amazing) we took our seats in the restaurant and chose the seafood tasting menu to eat. The beer option didn't seem to be there so we went for a bottle of white wine to go with the seafood. From the fantastic poppadoms and chutneys to the delicious desserts the food was all tremendous. Particular standouts were the scallop and the black cod, however all the food was top notch. The portions didn't look small but they were very filling and we certainly didn't come out feeling hungry. Great food, excellent service and reasonable value - it's fair to say our experience at Quilon was worth the wait.

The food is always great and waiting staff are all good but the Manager Ashish he is extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming ! I believe he needs proper customer service training and kept well away from paying customers . what a shame the class and level of this Michelin restaurant has come down after this person joining! I would like to make a formal complaint as a regular customer who has been coming for years ! I would appreciate if someone could look into this persons performance .

Quilon is an amazing experience. From the time I made the reservation, I was treated with such respect. Upon arrival, we were offered the option of having a drink in the bar before taking our table. At no time did we feel rushed in anyway. They have a unique selection of exotic cocktails available. The atmosphere is very inviting, and romantic. We were then shown to the dining room, where we were offered one of three tables. The wine list is very extensive, we chose a bottle of Tattinger to begin the evening. The dining room manager is very helpful with regard to selecting Starters, appetizers, and entrées based on your taste. I cannot say enough about the service. Because it was exquisite. The entire staff was very approachable, very welcoming and very accommodating.

We had an evening with friends at Quilon. Happy with a couple of dishes. Service was good. Could have been better. We were served a couple of dishes complimentary. However that could not make up for the mistakes made with appetizers and main course. The fish and shrimp for appetizers were overcooked. We had the mango fish curry and the gravy lacked flavor. The fried okra was done well, however was missing salt and/or seasoning. The Lamb shank was undercooked. Desserts was good. Chicken pepper was excellent. Cocktails were excellent. I will be back but would stick to finger foods and cocktails at the bar.

Cocktails 10/10, Starters 10/10, Main course / desert 7/10. The cocktails were outstanding and well presented. Same goes for the starters and they served them on a per person plate basis rather than to share which was also great. The mains (vegetarian choices) are okay with some dishes being better than others. The jackfruit biryani isn't anything memorable and honestly I've had better. The more south Indian orientated dishes such as the mango curry were definitely much more impressive so would recommend choosing those. Overall the service was good. The decor is more traditional inside and can at times feel a bit gloomy when it is quiet. However the main suggestion would be to have some background music or ambient sound as when we went it was not very busy and so felt awkwardly quiet to sit there in silence. Would recommend for the food and drink if you are looking for elevated south Indian food to Michelin standard. Decent choice for vegetarians too.

My favorite dish was the lobster butter pepper, halibut curry dish, a lamb dish...TO DIE FOR! My favorite was the lobster butter pepper! SO GOOD! We went to Quilon with a lot of expectation since it was our first Indian Michelin star experience. Having previously tried one two and three star restaurants in western cuisine, we were excited. We had the Beer tasting menu for dinner. While the food was decent, Im not sure if it was worth the one star Michelin. The different elements within the courses lacked coherence. Somehow I missed the Michelin experience we got the other times we visited Michelin restaurants. The only high point was the beers in the Beer tasting menu. That was really good.

We know very little about Indian cuisine so we had to rely on the waitstaff for recommendations. They suggested the tasting menu that was exclusively fish/seafood. My husband also added the wine pairing. The presentation of the food was lovely and we both enjoyed all the individual dishes. However, since we are far from experts, we have no way of gauging how Quilon compares to others that offer similar cuisine. The service was attentive but not overbearing. And while there were plenty of other diners, the noise level was low - - it was easy for us to have our own conversation. Three shortcomings that resulted in just 4 four stars are: (1) no one asked us our "heat tolerance" for spices; (2) we would have benefitted from some explanation about the dishes and how to eat them; (3) the wine pairing was mediocre in the sense that all the wines seemed ordinary. While I understand not wanting to insult guests who are familiar with this cuisine, we made it clear when the waiter arrived that we knew nothing about the dishes on the menu. For "newbies" like us it would've been extremely helpful to either ask about heat tolerance or at least point out which dishes are particularly spicy (my husband has a lot lower tolerance for 'heat' than I do) if the amount of heat can't be adjusted. It also would've been helpful to explain how a tasting menu item that includes 5 separate elements in separate dishes (a rice dish, a vegetable dish, a fish in sauce, a yogurt and a naan like bread) should be eaten or, even better, what is unique or special about a particular dish. Finally, when doing a tasting menu plus a wine pairing, we are accustomed to a wine steward offering explanations about each of the paired wines, who the winemaker is, where the wine is from, and why it was chosen. My husband barely had a chance to look at the labels for the poured wines and all he was told was the type of grape. As best we could tell, the wines were pretty ordinary and while they certainly didn't clash with the individual tasting item, there was no point where my husband said "wow, this is really perfect for this dish."

AFFORDABLE LUXURY Michelin-starred brunch YOU MUST TRY 🌟 Quilon: An Exceptional Gastronomic Experience 🌟 Located in the heart of London, Quilon is a true haven for Indian cuisine enthusiasts. I had the pleasure of trying their brunch, served every Saturday and Sunday and I was absolutely delighted. 🍽️ A Dream Brunch The Quilon brunch is a feast for the senses. Served at the table, it features an array of exceptional dishes created by their talented chefs. The cuisine is South-West coastal Indian, with a Michelin star to its name. 🍹 Cocktails and Delights The cocktails are a must-try: the Qojito with green chili-infused vodka and the Closer to the Edge with tequila and house-infused spices were my favourites. As for the food, I sampled both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian brunch menus. My highlights? The kosambari in a watermelon cup, herb-crusted seatrout, mini shrimp dosa, Malabar lamb curry, paneer, and tempered asparagus. I even asked for seconds of the best paratha I’ve ever tasted! For dessert, the almond and berries roulade stole the show. And let’s not forget the masala chai—the best I’ve ever had, even compared to my trips to India! 🌐 Ambiance and Service The service is impeccable: cheerful and well-prepared waitstaff make the experience even more enjoyable. The location itself is fantastic, setting the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey. In summary, Quilon is a culinary gem that deserves a visit. I can’t wait to go back! 🌟

If you are near Buckingham palace, this restaurant is a must visit. Yards away from Victoria station, Try their weekend brunch which is available on Saturday and Sunday. It is a priced at £48 pp. For 5 very authentic and creative courses. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. We were very full at the end of it. Just the dessert could have had a choice we felt. It was still very good but another option would have made it even more memorable. Service was impeccable. Ambience was calming with subtle Indian instrumental music transporting you to the wonderful Kerala. There is adequate space between tables to enable you enough privacy. Service is efficient and attentive without intruding your personal space. There is no additional charge whatsoever added to the final bill, so no hidden costs like other restaurants. The icing on the cake was to see the celebrity head chef Mr. Sriram Aylur, whose over 20 years of hard work here has earned them a Michelin star. It is also ideal to celebrate a special occasion such as birthday or anniversary. It is now my favourite restaurant in London, I preferred it to Banaras and Gymkhana. But is neck to neck with Jamavar. Go for it. It is owned by a highly prestigious five star Indian restaurant chain, Taj Hotels. They have a Taj hotel right next to it. This is Taj’s second restaurant in London, they also have Bombay Brasserie, which is also awesome. I don’t understand some poor reviews, if this is not for you, I don’t know what can please you! Highly recommended. Here you can eat refined South Indian cuisine, served as set tasting menus. We ate the fish and shellfish menu with appetizer, eight small courses including a soup and a main dish. The class of the kitchen is evident from the balance between the herbs, spices and the very expertly controlled temperature of the preparations. That was a hit with every bite. Highlights were a crab croquette, a salty-sour herb-lentil-tomato soup (rasam), a shrimp and tamarind curry, fish in coconut sauce, green asparagus and beans with coconut-mustard seed crumble. The freshly baked puff pastry paratha roll was phenomenal. We asked for and promptly received a second one. The dessert may not have been Indian (pistachio chiffon cake with chocolate and a glass of Sauternes), but it was a perfect fit. The atmosphere is stylish and quiet. You can just listen and speak, without drunken screaming people messing things up, which is exceptional for London on a Friday evening. There is no flat Bollywood decor, no loud music and good lighting so you can see your plate. The service is young but reassuring, loose, knowledgeable about the ingredients and never bossy. We took the wine pairing with five suggestions, which was good quality (British, South Africa, Italy, Argentina and French) but perhaps a beer would have been good too. Considering the irrational madness of price inflation in post-Brexit London (April 2024), we paid a very correct all-in price.

Quilon at Taj 51: Disappointed Expectations While Quilon, the Indian restaurant at Taj 51 Residence & Suites, boasts a mesmerizing decor with intricate details, it unfortunately fell short on the culinary front. The staff, however, deserves a shoutout for their welcoming and friendly service. However, when it comes to the food, Quilon pales in comparison to other Michelin-starred Indian restaurants like Jamavar or Gymkhana. The dishes we tried were, at best, average and lacked the depth and complexity of flavors one would expect from such a highly-rated establishment. We left feeling rather disappointed, especially considering the price point. Dishes: Unfortunately, there weren't any stand-out dishes that we could wholeheartedly recommend. The only thing I would recommend, as it was decent but not mind-blowing is the ‘Fisherman’s Catch’; a picture is in this review to highlight this food item. Getting There: If you're planning to visit Quilon and using public transport, the journey is fairly straightforward. Take the Victoria Line on the London Underground and get off at Victoria Station. From there, it's a short 8-minute walk to the Taj 51 Residence & Suites on Buckingham Gate. Recommendation: While the friendly staff and beautiful decor create a pleasant ambiance, the food, unfortunately, doesn't live up to the hype. If you're looking for a truly exceptional Indian dining experience, we'd recommend exploring other Michelin-starred options like Jamavar or Gymkhana.

I visited this restaurant on the 19th of April with my wife for a nice meal out. The food on the whole was ok and packed a fair bit of heat. Although this wasn't far off the quality of my local 0 Michelin star restaurant. I found pieces of crab shell in the crab cake and nearly chipped a tooth. However the scallop and Halibut were fantastic. I told the waiter and this was acknowledged somewhat and forgotten about. They had also forgotten to bring a dish to the table that was ordered with no apology, just a want to correct me for saying it was mango instead of pineapple. (We didn't have the menu to hand to look at). Upon finishing our mains which were nice (lamb was unbelievably tender and the chicken tender and moist), the waitress was quite pushy and offended that we didn't eat all the food. She told us we could take our time and finish despite being quite clear we had eaten enough. I eventually asked for it to go to stop the awkwardness with her hanging around the table watching us. I noticed that this happened to another diner sitting opposite us, who cut her food up (to look like she had tried some) in a bid to stop the interrogation from the wait staff as to why she didn't want anymore food. They were approached multiple times and again the same awkward standing and staring. I also found it frustrating being told how to eat my meal when the food was set down. Being told to use my hands with the bread and to dip it in the curry sauce. Seems pretty straight forward to me and when I am paying £200 for a sub par meal, I'll eat it how I want. Dessert did not live up to the expectations either with the panna cotta being rather lumpy, grainy and bland with a bland, runny sauce poured all over. I was left disappointed as this was absolutely not Michelin star service or food. Average food, large amount of misplaced pretentiousness and a lacking experience.

Decidedly disappointing, especially considering what you are expecting from a "Michelin" restaurant. Primary server was very professional and accomodating with solid recommendations, but after that there were some clear short-comings as it relates to the service of the food, which is one of the primary things your are paying for. In fact, it seemed like some of the staff was being trained during live dinner services which should never be done. Had to continually ask for water to be refilled, food was bought to the table while one of the two was in the bathroom which meant there was no explanation for what everything was, asked for a spicy and was average heat at most. Overall, for the price paid, was the most disappointing dinner in London for th 5 nights we were there. Would not recommend - go to a mid-level (non-Michelin) indian restaurant and you will be much happier.

In particular, the chef’s specialty black cod was bland (albeit, cooked very well). I found the same to be true of the Fisherman’s Catch appetizer (save the scallop). The waitress thought that I had not ordered enough and was insistent I order more which made for an uncomfortable circumstance. It created a weird dynamic for the rest of the meal where it felt like she was unhappy with me. Overall, I found the restaurant to be overpriced and not memorable. I think much better Indian can be found in London.

The place is stunning. Staff is very nice. We went there for a birthday celebration and really enjoyed the meals. Some vegetarian dishes can look a bit the same, but overall, they are very tasty, very well seasoned, and beautifully presented.

Tried the seafood and non-vegetarian (with wine pairing) taster menu. Certainly prepared the seafood one. Ambience is great, it’s one of the few Kerala restaurants with a Michelin star. Must go for South Indians. Very friendly staff.

This is perfectly nice food. But it's a very long way from Michelen star, I honestly don't know how they got it. Were it a regular restaurant, this is a 4/5 . But at this price and the claimed reputation, it's a 2 / 5. My tomato rice was warm but bland. The chicken fine, but not particularly succulent and the flavours flat and singular. My local Indian takeaway in Cascais, Portugal is better TBH. Which is a shame as I really wanted to love this place.

Myself and my partner dined at Quillon a few months back and I had forgotten to review but I have to say that this was one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a restaurant. With starters that were bland and a curry which wasn't any better than you would find in your average Indian restaurant. The price tag of £170 for a basic meal with bad service meant I could only give it a 1 star. Maybe my expectations were high for a Michelin star restaurant but I was severely underwhelmed and over charged. Save your money and go get a ready meal, you'll feel just as satisfied.

Our first Indian experience. We didn't really know what to expect. Had an aperitif upon entering the bar. This was prepared correctly. We got a quiet table for 2 of our choice. The wall had some splashes, it needs to be cleaned sometimes. We were given a choice of 3 menus. Only seafood, mix, veggie. We chose the mixed menu. We got some dips but it was not very well explained how this all worked... 😄. One by one they were tasty but very spicy. At the same time came a leaf soup, equally spicy. Then 3 more dishes with different components. Very tasty. The matching wines were also delicious! Great experience! Price quality really ok!

A South India themed restaurant. We visited for lunch which had set menu. We went for vegetarian menu and were not disappointed. Great preparation and taste. Staff is friendly and restaurant has warm and inviting atmosphere. Although, the price is at higher end but definitely justified by tasty food.

I’ve dined at over 20 Michelin starred restaurants and this one is the worst of them. Food was served while I was away to the washroom. The only drinks We ordered was one sparkling water and one distilled and they could still the mistake by giving us only distilled water. The presentation of dishes was dull and the taste was lack of excitement. However, £50-60 for lunch is rather cheap for the whole package.

Eating at Quilon is sheer unalloyed pleasure. The food is a treat for the tastebuds. The ambience is relaxed and transports you to a household in the ancient kingdom of Quilon in Southern India. The staff are friendly but professional, with nothing seemingly a problem; not even an ultra mischievous 5 year old and her clumsy Dad! Vijay, who served us was affable, attentive and a paragon of patience. Chef Sriram and his team are magicians in the kitchen and the long standing association with the Michelin star is of course fully deserved. Would recommend very strongly and go again and again.

My husband and I had mixed feelings about our visit to Quilon. We tried the Non-vegetarian tasting menu. On one had we loved the duck roast, the lamb curry and artichokes! Also thank you for the anniversary cake at the end. It was a sweet gesture which we really appreciated. On the other hand, I was not impressed with the service and overall experience due to following three points: 1) My duck roast had two mustard dips while my husband’s duck roast came with one mustard and other green chutney dip. 2) the glasses in which we were served rasam were not clean. We had to wipe the glass base in order to be able to hold the drink without getting our hands dirty. The server also didn’t explain us what she brought. After looking at our confused faces she just asked “it’s Rasam , you know what it is right?” 3) I had a hair on the bottom of my red velvet cake! See attached photos. The manager was very kind. He apologized and waived off 20 pounds from the total bill to compensate. We had come to Quilon expecting much better quality. Due to this experience, we’ve been offered a 25% discount voucher for next dining experience but I’m not sure if I wanna go back! Will definitely edit my review in case we go back.

The food was quite good, as one would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. We got the seafood tasting menu and quite enjoyed the first few courses. However, Quilon missed the mark with everything else. The cocktails were average, the atmosphere wasn’t ideal - with bright lighting and the music too loud to enjoy a quiet, relaxed meal. Most disappointing were the service and level of hospitality, which were certainly not up to the mark - despite the many staff members flitting around, we were not offered tea or coffee, were ignored for a long time after the dessert service, and generally did not feel like we were well taken care of. Disappointed with the overall experience despite enjoying the food.

Quilon is an outstanding restaurant, perfect for a special occasion or celebration. Food quality is consistently excellent, while the ambience and spacing of the tables also contribute to a pleasant evening. However, it is the service that really makes Quilon stand out as exceptional. Attention to detail, willingness to accommodate bespoke requests, team work and thoughtful suggestions all combine for a special evening.

My visit to Quilon left me with mixed feelings. While the restaurant deviates from the typical Indian menu with its Goan-style offerings, it caters predominantly to seafood lovers. As someone less inclined towards seafood, the experience fell short of expectations. The prices, akin to Michelin standards, felt steep for what turned out to be a less-than-stellar overall experience. The portions were on the smaller side, and the service, particularly the wait for the bill, was notably average, having said that the lady who saw us off today and offered to put my childrens coats on them was extremely kind and is an asset to the restaurant. Despite some positive aspects like the lamb shank, the lack of a vibrant dining atmosphere leaves room for improvement. For those not enamoured with seafood or Goan cuisine, alternative options may offer a more satisfying Indian Michelin experience in London.

We booked Quilon for our son's birthday lunch. We were told that the menu would be a set menu but we were not disappointed. The service was top class and the food spread was quite good. The affair was mostly South Indian and tasted authentic. Giving 4 stars for the atmosphere as I expected a bit more from a Michelin Star restaurant, but the food and service were top notch and hence 5 stars for them.

I've reviewed Quilon previously here on TA. And both times with praise. On our third visit the praise remains, even though we did not quite experience the same absolute joy in every respect. Food still delicious, especially the fish/shellfish dishes. However, the menu could be a bit updated. We lacked the "surprise" feeling and felt that Quilon could do with some innovative thoughts in the kitchen. Service works fine - even though sometimes a bit "quirky". No shortage of staff, so it's more a matter of too many people on the floor than the other way around... It is expensive and during the inflation period the world has gone through recent years, the prices are not going down. It felt a little too expensive this time. In any case, the Quilon deserves its Michelin star. But should perhaps give a careful thought how to keep it in the future...

The food here is so incredible that I had a mini Ratatouille moment when I bit into a piece of the masala dosa dipped in sambar and chutney: I was immediately transported back in time to my grandmother's kitchen. The menu is a brilliant interplay of simple south indian flavours within a modern palette composition. It is a fantasy dance where south India meets Italy. My other favourites were: Malabar parotha (incredible layers and served at the perfect temperature), asparagus-coconut starter, mango dip and lastly the dessert (chocolate ganache, pistachio cake and berry sorbet). Chef's kiss!

Had been looking at booking here for some time but with the strange no prices on website and some of the reviews on here , I was hesitant. Today we took the plunge and we’re not disappointed. The restaurant is situated to the side of the Taj hotel .its a pleasant space and as we were the first to arrive , it felt quiet and calm . We choose a booth seat and as no one was opposite at the facing table it felt like private dining . I’m sure this might be a different experience when busy but was good for us. Our servers ( Harshita and Muhamed ) were very welcoming and friendly and helpful with any menu questions . We started with a isodori cocktail - blue curacao, coconut rum , coconut water . A theatrical cocktail with a bubble on top that when burst , releases smoke and the scent of coconut. The taste was as good as it looked . As we are both pescatarian, we were accommodated with a mixture of vegetarian and fish dishes from the two tasting menus : starter of mini popadum style crisps and various dips , a galette with plum sauce , baked halibut, crispy prawns , mango curry , rice and paratha bread . We finished with bibinca , a lovely laminated chocolate pancake tart . We also had a carafe of a cheekily named pinot noir called Fat Bastard! Lol So all in a Michelin starred meal for two with cocktails , wine and coffee for £145 -wonderful! Will definitely be returning soon!

Quilon absolutely deserves its Michelin star. Everything was perfect from walking in the door, the warm greeting, atmosphere and of course the amazing food. Nothing is too much trouble for the team, they explained the menu, the region and how different cuisine is in India. If you haven't been, I would highly recommend it. I was particularly impressed at some of the small touches, they were aware it was our anniversary and there was a small treat from the chef to celebrate, a small thing for them, but a huge thing for us. Well done and keep p the amazing work.
