Came for a birthday celebration and we all loved our meals. 4 people had the beef wellington and said it was delicious. I had the Old Winchester & truffle double baked soufflé to start and it was incredibly tasty, and the aubergine tagline which was also full of flavour. The staff were so sweet and friendly, cocktails were delicious. It is on the pricier side but a great place to go for an occasion as it is such great quality!

Subtle handling of scallops and beef carpaccio - both easy to get very wrong - but here of high quality, and so pleasingly presented. Cod loin ably competed with these - tender meat, skin salted to just the right level, sauce delicately assertive without overpowering the fish. Potato cake to accompany was rich and irresistible. Put all this with a very decent Rioja and you have two excellent hours ahead. Witty, assiduous but unintrusive service also needs recognition.

Went for dinner last night. Staff were very sweet as usual. The food was very good but unfortunately cold. People at the next table were also complaining their food was cold. I was there a few months ago also and the chowder was cold. It completely lacked any finesse. Not even a sprinkling of herbs to make the food look inviting. Also a dead plant on the table... Great place for a cocktail but has failed the food test too many times now. Won't be back. Such a shame as the venue is amazing.

Disclaimer : We did not stay in the hotel , we had a 20 person family meal. Pros : - Alfredo and the rest of the staff were excellent, really attentive and helpful. Service was quick and organised. They work well together. - Incredible venue , very sophisticated interior. Good refurbishment on the bathrooms and other areas. Cons : Food on the whole was poor and needs work , £40 for a 3 course is good value , when met with good food. Starter was acceptable, main somewhat less and the deserts all round were inedible. Work needs to go into this. It is worth mentioning in fairness to the chefs that we did push the meal back by an hour. However the deserts will have not been affected by this. Overall summary : Would return as there are many facets to the business but not for the same meal under the same circumstances.

My sister and I had cocktails and dinner at the Queens Hotel on Saturday evening. The atmosphere was lovely and there was a good vibe in the bar earlier on. The cocktails were excellent and great before dinner. The food was excellent, simply wonderful and we felt we were somewhere very special. After our meal we had a nightcap in the bar. Honestly, the staff could not have been any more professional or friendly with superb food and a magnificent setting. Booking again for next month. Thank you Queens Hotel

I can often review this restaurant and give it the full five stars, today I would give it a four and half out of five, I didn’t book and Sunday lunch service can be very busy so i would certainly recommend it, but for the life of me I can’t understand why I had to wait half an hour for a table when there were plenty of tables visibly vacant, I went in at 2pm and some of those empty table were still empty when I left. After ordering a drink that I didn’t really want i sat in the bar listing to the live jazz, they nearly always have live jazz on a Sunday and the ambience is lovely. I was seated at 2:20pm, water was promptly delivered to the tables and swiftly our order taken. Our food took about 20 minutes to be brought out, I had the roast pork, it was tasty but I have had better roast pork before also it had no crackling just a rubbery pork skin. The carrots, kale and parsnips were yummy, the potatoes were a bit anaemic, I want roast potatoes on a roast, not ones that have only seen the oven briefly! The roast was a decent portion size, but no cauliflower cheese arrived the menu did state it was one of the vegetables, plus no salt in the salt cellar, my husband had the chicken breast he said it was succulent and tender. The staff are a real asset to this restaurant and although I found a few small faults this time I will still come back here again and again to eat.

I had friends visit for the weekend and we were looking for somewhere that served roast dinner. We’d gone to multiple restaurants, which had all stopped serving, though it was only 7pm(ish) I remembered the Queens hotel had restaurant 1865, so we popped in, and thankfully they were still serving. They say things happen for a reason, it was quite possibly the best roast dinner. I had pork, which was perfect, and my friends had the beef, which they said was delicious. Deserts were delicious too We all loved it so much we went back the next night. We all ordered the rib-eye, possibly the best steak we’d had, the knife went through like melted butter it was that tender. Everything about restaurant 1865 and it’s surroundings was 10/10 in every way. The staff are friendly, surroundings amazing, food exquisite, and prices really reasonable, in fact unbelievably reasonable. I couldn’t recommend this place enough, truly well worth visiting

We had Sunday lunch and it was excellent, a nice choice of dishes, I had the pork and my Wife had Chicken, both were excellent and superbly cooked. The waitresses were fantastic, so friendly and helpful, we felt we had known them for years. Service was very prompt, but not to the point of feeling rushed. An added bonus was the excellent saxophone player, very pleasant music and not too loud. As we were staying at the Hotel, we also had the pleasure of one of the best breakfasts I have had at any Hotel, it is worth visiting the Restaurant just to have their breakfast. We will definitely be back we are already booked into the Hotel in September, so the restaurant is a must.

Though we would go for a nice family Sunday lunch. Excellent service and great food, the Pork Belly roast was perfect but the atmosphere was spoiled by being unable to hear each other speak over the excessively loud live musician. Such a shame that 'background' music was so loud that the diners at most of the tables had to be so loud to make themselves heard. I will definitely ask if there is music on before booking again. Incidentally the afternoon tea looked really nice too!

We then had a 40 minute wait before the food arrived. It was lovely food bit it shouldn't have taken that long to prepare. The 2 young girls serving were covering both rooms and seemed to be rushed off their feet. Maybe the management need to rethink the amount of staff were needed. Sunday lunch for a family group of 13 dining at 14:00. Pre ordered wine not served in a timely manner. Under size table set for 12 so seating was unnecessarily tight. Staff appeared momentarily then disappeared without fulfilling requests. Those having carvery found roast potatoes dried out, veg over cooked and some not replenished. Meat was very nice. Gravy luke warm. Those guests ordering veggie and fish had their meal served over half an hour later and still had further wait for veg. Asked staff for another bottle of wine which again took a long time arriving. Plates were not cleared from table so a guest moved them. The competence of Management at this venue is clearly lacking. There was live music in the garden which management used as an excuse for poor service. Those attending the live event were not dining, mostly drinking. These guests were strolling thro dining room to toilet shouting as some do when enjoying a few drinks. Toilets inadequate for such events and normal hotel functioning. Ladies toilets ran out of loo paper. Indicating lack of staff attention. We declined dessert and coffee as it would have incurred a further unacceptable wait. In summary: the day was ruined due to incompetent staff but the meat was good. Guests booking a table to dine on a Sunday should be informed when there is a live event and warning of potential chaos.

Finding a place for lunch where one can park easily is difficult in Portsmouth so we where relieved to encounter the Queen's Hotel. This lovely Victorian hotel once catered for the affluent holiday maker and still retains an air of grandeur from those luxurious days. It is easily reached off the esplanade that faces the large green and war memorial on the sea front. We initially stopped for coffee and the use of the much needed loos. Glancing at the menu we were surprised to see that there was a good selection of items for a bar lunch priced no more than one would pay in a pub. We had our coffee on the balcony overlooking the terrace and garden enjoying the sunshine, and then decided to have our lunch in the bar. The soup was freshly made and a Greek salad were both substantial. The staff were attentive and helpful. There is plenty of parking and the shops in the pedestrianised area is close by thus enabling a visit to Waitrose to stock up before we caught our ferry. The ferries are also easily reached. This is definitely a place we would use again. There is also a more formal restaurant

I often feel reluctant to go to a carvery as I dislike the thought of being rationed with meat and then a help yourself soggy veg counter but the Sunday carvery at the Queens Hotel is superb. As we drive in to the hotel we were greeted by a doorman who checked our restaurant reservation and directed us to the car park. The entrance to the hotel is beautiful - real old style splendour. A musician was playing jazz music in the bar which added to the ambience. All of the staff are a credit to the hotel/restaurant. They worked hard but smiled and gave fantastic service. We sat at a table overlooking the hotel garden and with a sea view. There was no feeling of being rushed. The table was laid well with quality white cotton cloth and fresh flowers. The chef in charge of carving the meat was friendly and gave us huge portions. The gammon was delicious and it was fine to choose that as well as turkey and beef. The food was served on warm plates and there were plenty of crispy roast potatoes, vegetables, sauces and gravy. We didn't indulge in starters as we wanted dessert. Luckily there was one lemon posset left as I had saved space for that. The others were happy with a chocolate dessert or crumble. Desserts were beautifully presented and delicious. The hotel is in need of some tlc which I'm sure the new owners will be planning. Despite this there is a feeling of grand opulence from bygone days that it wonderful to experience.

This is a beautiful old hotel, it is gorgeous on the outside and in the lobby areas. The bar area is inviting with excellent service and good drink choices. Rooms are somewhat renovated but desire some changes to make it a truly wonderful experience. Suggestions would be some newer mattresses-as ours had some sags, the tv was a pain to operate or even get going, toilets were inconsistent when trying to flush and cold water was virtually non existent-we had to run cold and gradually add hot or one could get burnt. All in all I would recommend this hotel, as so close to attractions with beautiful photo opportunities...it just needs some tweaking.

I have stayed here before, but my last visit was just for dinner. I booked and asked for a table for one. I arrived and was shown into a room I had not used before. It was a very elegant room that I think was, or had been used as a seafood / champagne bar.The room was totally empty ! My order was taken by a pleasant gentleman, a drink arrived, the soup arrived and before it touched the tablecloth I was wearing some of it ! It was an accident but I had to go to the washroom to stop the burning on my hand and to remove my jacket. that was whisked away and a good attempts made to clean it.My main course arrived and it could have served four, it was enormous, and I can eat.I feel the hotel has lost its way and needs, as my title suggests, the 'RAMSEY' treatment. Yes that Marmite man, I would love to see what he could do for the place. With views to the Solent, grounds, and it has all of the essentials in place. Come on Queen's go to it

I had an away day with my colleagues at this hotel yesterday. I really enjoyed the traditional British decor and the very quiet secluded room we were given to spend the whole away day. The catering provide us with coffee breaks, and the croissants were really really good (I was in France for a week last week, hence I know what I mean!). Then we had lunch in a very spacious traditional british dining room. We had a reserved long table enough for the about 20 of us. The lunch itself was a hot buffet, and was very good, consisting of asian style food, i.e. fired rice, noodles, chicken and vegetables. A good option of ice cream or rice pudding as dessert completed the offer. Nothing extraordinary, but definitely very good, especially the place for perfect for the atmosphere.

Had Afternoon Tea here on the Saturday for early mothers day. The selection of food and tea was excellent, very tasty. The atmosphere although was a little hectic, staff seemed quite rushed and desperate to get customers out and the next in. But we had a nice time and again the food was delicious.

We visited The Queens Hotel for afternoon tea to celebrate my wife's birthday. We opted for a glass of champagne with the tea as it was a special occasion. The staff were very good, as was the food and the teas. The only down side to this visit was the material state of the hotel. It seems very tired and little tatty in places and it really needs a refurbishment to bring it back to its standard as a grand old hotel.A nice afternoon out though but not sure if we will return unless it is improved.

Went here for Christmas Day and couldn't fault it! The ambience, setting and food all made our day absolutely perfect. Arrived early and was greeted with welcome cocktails which we enjoyed whilst listening to live jazz. The decoration in the restaurant and hotel was amazing. Service as perfect, attentive but not rushing, we were left happily enjoying our experience without feeling rushed or hassled. The food was lovely - could of made something more of the vegetables if I had to ask for any improvements. Overall we had a great experience - thank you too the staff and hotel!

Went as a treat from a friend in December for the Festive Afternoon Tea. Really good from the start. we were led to our table by a friendly waiter,Jamie, who was attentive throughout and made sure we had everything we wanted. We took our time and spent about 2 hours there, the sandwiches and cakes were really nice, a great selection. Also had a winter Pimms pot which was very nice indeed. We have decided to make this an annual event as it was so good. Jamie came across as efficient but super friendly a definite asset to the Queens Hotel Team.

The location is fantastic, the Gunwharf Quays shopping center is within few minutes walk away only. They are charging for the wifi (£5 only but still) and the restaurant is average at the best. Staff are friendly but not more than that I am not too sure if I would stay here again since we have many other choices in Portsmouth

After an aborted attempt to eat at another local restaurant where the kitchen was closed we decided to go to the Queens. Staff in reception extremely helpful, we were offered seats in the bar area or the restaurant, we chose the bar area nice view, bright and sunny. The starters were good, for mains we ordered fish and chips and one roast dinner. Downside, the presentation of the fish and chips was not good, just looked thrown onto the plate. I asked for some black pepper (having tasted my fish and I do not use salt), I asked again and then gave up, my friend asked another waiter and the pepper finally arrived just as I was finishing my meal. Silly things spoil a lunch. Will I return, possibly not as we have many restaurants to chose from in our area.

Treated my family to Sunday lunch and was confident it would be good, turned out better than expected, nice big circular table in adjacent dining room, attentive staff, great roast meet from their carvery with lovely vegatables, puddings were fabulous, my guests were pleased that I steered them away from a starter, 2 courses are more than ample and todays sweet selection was very good. Thanks to the staff for making our visit so pleasant, especially on such a busy day with the Great South Run literally outside!

My husband, who is in a wheelchair, and I have just spent four nights at the Queen's Hotel, a lovely Victorian hotel overlooking the Solent. We had a large room which was fully accessible and gave us wonderful sea views. The staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble for them. We ate in the hotel on two evenings and the food was beautifully prepared and presented. Thank you.

Excellent coffee served by the professional bar man & free parking on a damp chilly September morning. We chatted to a couple of residents staying at the hotel who informed us that as residents they are charged for overnight parking & wifi by the day ! Don't think even with its great location we would check into this establishment.

Never tried Sunday Cavary at the Queens give it a go, I live to close to even think of it but called in (you don't have to be resident just book) Excellent selection of freshly cooked joints of meat, we had on offer Turkey/Beef/Ham all cooked to perfection with plenty of choice of veg, and roast potatoes. The surroundings are "opulent" with a lovely garden at the side which has been open with entertainment throughout the summer, my wife and I new favourite location for a Sunday Roast dinner.

Firstly may I say the best thing about The Queens Hotel is its delightful and courteous staff. The food however was poor. Roast dinner was totally unacceptable with reheated over cooked tough tasteless meat and vegetables so al dente we were unable to eat them and a reheated tough Yorkshire. The salmon in the salad nicoise was also overcooked. Restaurant was occupied by a table of 20 or so book club members who tutted us every time we spoke because they were having a meeting. This should have been held in a private room as it made the other diners feel very uncomfortable. We asked if there was a disabled WC on th same floor and were told no we would have to go to the end of the corridor where there was one with a couple of steps. More than a couple and very steep was the actuality causing distress to one of our party. Bearing in mind we had travelled from Suffolk to take 95 year old mother out for her birthday, it was sadly an utter disaster.

Have been coming to the hotel for some years now. Very reasonable rates, helpful staff and relaxed atmosphere. Rooms are very comfortable, clean and the double beds are enormous. A bit a luxury thrown in too. Food is very good and in a really great location but not too busy either. Would recommend for anyone for any reason.

Tickets stated event starts at 7.00pm, it DIDN'T, it was 7.30pm. Chilli meal average with cruets brought to the table after the meal was finished. Show was good but the performers were also s Take That tribute act, if you pay to see a Jersey Boys act that is what you expect to see. Disorganised evening.

Booked as trying to get coastal location for bank holiday everywhere else was booked up. Nice hotel clean and staff were friendly , nice rooms and the bar was reasonably priced. Can park all day for £5.00 which is considering we were paying for hotel I think it should be free but £5.00 wont break the bank. The bed was a bit disappointing as it seemed to be broken but over all I would stay here again as good location to all attractions in area.
