Quayside Cafe in Northumberland

We called in for the first time 13/09/24 and having been to many chippies looking for good old fashioned fish and chips you know the ones and we found them here, nice white fresh juicy fish with great light crispy batter and chips with flavour and no excess of oil on them, the mushy peas were also of great quality tasty and just the right amount of mush and peas and not too runny and not too dry. they are fairly expensive but you get what you pay for quality and the size of the portions, were not huge, but also not that small, I had haddock that was superb and my wife had the cod both were of the same high fresh moist standard . We can compare these with supposedly world famous place in Whitby the magpie, just last week dry expensive small sour tasting fish that was disgusting , and got threw in the bin, at the quayside you are getting, far superior fish and chips, I enjoyed them so much I went back and thanked the lady chef for giving me the best fish and chips, that I have had in many many years. We never needed to use the facilities and can understand the frustration of customers who do, but some places need these rules because if you have free flow of people in and out you will also have the thieving scum who think that it is their right to walk in eat and drink as much as they like feed their whole family and friends and leave without paying, that results in honest people paying more and not being able to use the toilets. But back to facts the fish and chips here are the best I have for many many years and highly recommend them , and will struggle not to travel from South Shields regularly to sample these delights again,

A friend and I go all over on our motorcycles and always call in some place for fish and chips,call here today and both had to admit they where the best we have had in a long time ,they seemed to cook them to order so really fresh,,liked the way the fish wasn’t placed on top of the chips making them to go soggy ,the fish just melted in your mouth ,All the staff where really helpful particularly the two young girls which was also great to see.Definitely be back soon

Horrendous customer service directed from the Manager, no disabled access and having both a disabled customer who could only sit outside due to no access for a wheel chair plus a child needing the toilet after spending £70 on fish and chips to be told by the manager we weren't classed as customers because we only had a takeaway and never sat inside. I didn't realise quayside fish and chip were a seperate company to.....the quayside fish and chips??? I fully appreciate people who are not customers not using the toilets. However how can the manager stipulate that buying from the Take away section is not classed as a customer, when they are the same company, are connected and the food in the restaurant is cooked inside the takeaway and they have seats outside stating for Quayside customers only which we were sat at? Expressed to the manager we will not be returning here again after his attitude which the management's reply was * it's only £70 I dont care *but we visit here every 2 weeks which accumulates to £1,820 a year hope the owner reads these reviews and looks at your CCTV to see how appalling you are in a management position.

Mediocre fish and chips. We all ate from the takeaway but my children weren’t allowed to use the toilets in the cafe. Appalling customer service.

We had a late lunch of fish and chips and enjoyed it very much, with the great value "special" which included fish, chips, mushy peas and a pot of tea. Service was friendly and quick and the food was excellent - really good fish and chips! The portion size for the "special" was smaller than in the takeaway, but it was just right for lunch (and sensible!).

Absolutely delicious cod and chips. We were asked as we went in if we wanted any fish put in so we knew it was cooked freshly. It was lovely and hot and so were the chips and both were really tasty. Just beware of the many seagulls circling outside who may want to steal them!

They sell the best fish and chips around yes the partions are a little smaller bur we you for quality not quantity and still more than enough I never all mine . I'm sorry I have been reading some of these nasty comments there ate 100s of folk in Amble on Saturday mainly Sunday if everyone wondered in wanting to use toilets if would not work , also in my experience the staff do an amazing job the pressure and heat they work at ( well done staff 👏) excellent job in shortly 2 fish and chips and can of tango ..

Having a lovely day out on Sunday with my family. We got four take out meals inc cartons of curry sauce and peas £60. We were sat right outside the restaurant main doors on their seats. Opened our cartons up no forks to eat our food. I went to the take away to be told they had run out of forks and napkins so I went in to the sit in (same shop) to ask if we could borrow a fork to eat our food as it is quite difficult to eat curry and peas with your fingers. The girl inside told me no. I asked again explained we had just bought the food next door in the same shop. She barked back no we don’t lend forks out. Incidentally the same girl a few weeks ago tried to stop a young child using the toilet who again had bought their food at the same shop. Unbelievable that you would try and stop a young child from going to the loo. The customers inside were absolutely horrified and the young girls father told them in no uncertain therms what he thought. Well done for your excellent customer service and ruining people’s special day off on a Sunday spending their hard earned wages in your establishment. Do not go to this place and ruin your lovely outing in Amble. The food by the way is not great and not worth the pain.

AVOID!! Came here for a family lunch & wish I never bothered £50 out of pocket and not one of us is full! Fish batter was soggy, looked like it had been dropped on the floor & shoved in a box! Potions are absolutely tiny and the staff are even worse! If you don’t like your job, don’t do it! Customer service is absolutely shocking, we used to come here most Sundays it has gone down hill & im so disappointed. We will never be returning!!

Different for us! Absolutely so! When in Amble eat fish! Lovely haddock with crisp batter which didn't give me indigestion. Lots if chips too. Clean and tidy - tables properly cleaned after every use, and floor swept each time too. The 2 waitresses worked like Trojans. Well done - would recommend.

Been coming to this fish shop for 20+ years and that is the worst fish and chips we’ve had from there when we visited Easter Sunday. Firstly, there was on fly in the heated lamps to keep the food warm… not good. The service was shocking! They got our order wrong despite us repeating it 5 times and the lady clearly wasn’t listening to due to her numerous sighs. The young teenagers behind the counter didn’t seem to know what was going on. We spent over £75 on our order and I’ve honestly had more fish on a finger and the portion size of chips was tiny and tasteless. Very disappointing. Unfortunately we won’t be returning. Can’t justify spending that amount of money of food and that isn’t nice and the service is so bad.

We went to the cafe but we were told they aren't dog friendly, which was fine as we went to their takeaway next door. We sat on picnic tables just outside the restaurant entrance. My friend needed the ladies and went in the cafe, and was told that it was for customers only and that she needed to go to the public toilets 3 minutes down the road! Honestly, so she had to leave her food to get cold. Disgraceful. And the fish batter was all soggy. Won't be going back!!

A massive disappointment! We've been going to this chip shop for as long as I can remember! 25+ years probably.. Visited today with a lot of family members. We couldn't go in the cafe as some of us had dogs, that was absolutely fine. It was a nice day so we didn't mind sitting outside. I got fish & chips twice, one with curry sauce and one with mushy peas for me and my husband (no drinks). It came to £28. I thought that's a lot but we're on the coast on Easter Sunday so I didn't mind. However when we opened the boxes I was shocked. The portion size was tiny for the price. And they didn't taste all that nice. Also they piled way too much salt on and couldn't even taste the vinegar. I stood for a while and queued which I expected but myself and other family members were served by teenagers who clearly didn't want to be there. No manners and I saw a few sighs here and there from them too. Anyway, after I've eaten I wanted to use the toilet and ask if they had baby change. As we walked towards the toilets we were stopped by a very rude lady telling us we can't use the toilets as we didn't sit in the cafe. I said we were unable to sit in due to having a dog and a pram. She held her arms out moving us towards the door telling us we can't use the facilities and was extremely rude. That fish shop must have made over £180 today from my family alone and I wasn't able to use the toilet or change my baby. I can definitely say after all these years I will NOT be visiting this fish shop again, neither will my family and management need to sort the staff out!

Good Friday Rip Off! Stood in the queue for over an hour with hundreds of others over the day only to be completely ripped off by the tiny portions. COD at £9.20 was a disgrace and like many others opted for fish bites at £7 but for 4 little pieces of fish?? Then a half filled bag of chips. This place probably made more today than it does in a whole year. Absolutely shocking, definitely never going back!

This has been my favourite chippy in Amble since my childhood. Upon entering the Cafe earlier today we followed the polite sign that asked us to wait to be seated. We were met by two not so lovely teenagers that had no interest in us entering and told us to sit anywhere. After deciding what to order my partner asked about an item on the menu to receive a confused look by the staff serving behind the counter as if asking questions was out of their pay grade. While waiting for the food to be cooked I could feel the eyes of the counter staff burning into the back of my skull while having a conversation. We were kindly brought our drinks and cutlery over by who seemed like the older one of the two. Shortly followed by our food that may as well have been threw across the room and onto the table. The plates were plonked down as if it was a dogs dinner bowl and off she went. No manners or anything. The whole time we were trying to eat you could feel the piercing looks of the girls behind the counter, sniggling and gossiping while watching you eat your entire meal. After finishing our food we paid and made a swift exit. The food was on point, the service however made me feel like I was in a school canteen being judged by the bitchy girls who think they are better than everyone else. Will return but will be getting take out.

Worst service I've ever had, 3 teenagers waiting on in the restaurant, seemed like they weren't interested in serving tables. Ordered fish & chips, after going to the counter as had waited a while to have our order taken. Ordered 2 lots of fish & chips one with mushy peas, after finally getting our order had ask for cutlery, mushy peas were stone cold , so I returned them and made them aware that the were cold. When they were returned to my table they had watered with hot water as they were now sloppy peas(not funny) won't be back to this establishment and will not recommend to anyone.... I wasn't the only customer to complain.

Gone down hill quick, to think Ant and Dec used to be regulars. 2 cashiers taking order the lasses were too young in this environment, then older lady cooking and help boxing up food. Service slow, sausage was dried out been under the light too long. Gravy was minging, tasted like runny onion gravy, prefer meat gravy. Over priced but at least the seagulls were well fed with my leftovers.

I'm sorry, but this fish and chip shop really has gone down hill. £11.90 for haddock and small chips. The haddock was small and the chips cold and rubbery. For 20 years this has been my favourite chippie in Amble but I will never go again.

Absolutely shocking service from lady fryer/server! So rude to customers, everyone in the shop appeared to be taken aback by her attitude, shouting at customers to stand in the right place, telling another customer as he was leaving that he had no paid for wooden cutlery (he had paid on his card and no cash and the initial server was at fault for not charging in first instance). This is the second time I have experienced bad customer service from this shop (same lady). The other staff were miserable and to be fair, I don’t blame them having to put up with that for the entire shift. I did message the company to put forward my feelings, however, no response and so tells you all you need to know really. The food itself was overpriced for the portion size and definitely not outstanding as would be expected online with price points. Terrible….steer clear!

Ordered two fish and chips and a curry sauce as takeout. Paid. Had to ask again for curry sauce as not with order. Got home to find one fish and chips ( a handful ) , one fish no chips both fish was cold, dry and mainly batter and charged 26.00 pounds for the privilege. Wouldn't recommend.

Ordered fish & chips gravy & chips and plate of chips.. the chips were disgusting dried up and cold with no taste, black bits and all chip ends I only managed 3 chips then left the lot! We all barely touched meal cost us £35 the tea was nice! If I'd checked reviews first I would have avoided it! The fish was tasteless

I was charged £2.70 for a portion of chips. This came in a cone containing 12 chips. I asked for the other portions to be wrapped in paper, but was told I had to pay 20 pence for a box. I wouldn't recommend this chip shop, won't bo going back.

Used to be extremely good quality, quantity and value for money but boy were we disappointed with the expensive meagre serving we paid for on Sunday "never again" !

Called in here earlier 2day ( 10/10/23) for a takeaway. The food was spot on, all freshly cooked and very tasty. The only sour note to be "truthful " !!! was the female who served us. In all honesty wat a miserable and rude person, she REALLY did not want to be there not even a smile. We were not the only people who noticed.

Decided to pop into the takeaway for something for lunch. Woman behind the counter, older, dark bobbed hair with glasses needs a crash course in customer service. Her whole demeanour was miserable, felt as if we were bothering her. The chips were tasty enough if not a little cold but that could have been from the frostiness of the woman serving chilling the place right down!

Opted for a chippy dinner after a walk along the coastline. The chippy was clean and fresh looking inside with plenty of tables inside and a few outside. The staff were friendly and helpful and took our orders soon after arriving. When the fish and chips arrived, it looked really rasty, and it was. Chips cooked to perfection in my opinion, fish lightly battered and crispy. The cod was delicious as you would expect from a seaside town. Definitely worthy of a visit if you're down on the quayside

We were on our way to Bamburgh for a few days in our recently converted camper and thought we'd call into Amble for a look round and some fish and chips, choosing this place was our first mistake!As soon as we stood outside we should have realised really, covid signs everywhere, masks etc etc..people eating outside and they did look nice so we gave it a go, waited a while because customers are required to stand on blue spots on the floor at 2 metres apart while ordering or waiting for food, all customer masked up I wasn't and that is my free choice.So when I was eventually summoned in I was met with walls of perspex and a glaring lady, maybe my "mask-less" appearance, peering over the fryer asking what I wanted, plainly order 2 cod small chips and peas, which was misheard several times till I thought she'd got it right.So proceeded to my next blue spot, and was met behind her perspex barrier a small middle aged lady with short grey and a face of thunder who barked out what did I order, told her politely she went to the till said it was £18 something, it wasn't I told her, young girl came over the only bright spot in the shop and corrected her £14 something still bit pricey but they did look nice.So in the time I saw thunder face shout at a young girl waiting for her pickled onion to "get over there" despite her standing on a blue spot, her repeatedly ask what time it was, then a man come in mask-less went to door to counter get something from an employee, all of staff mask-less and not once did I see anyone behind the counter sanitize or wash their hands, a relevant point when I finish my story.Thunder face came to her counter slammed my mushy peas done glared and went to get my 2 fish, small chips I already had received peas, so it's 2 fish 2 small chips and peas she said, no I said 2 fish, small chips and mushy peas, think she would have remembered after trying to overcharge me in the first place.So she asks do I want salt and vinegar, yes please can I put it on myself it was like I'd asked for a bar of gold, "no no covid 19" I was told, "you might have it", I haven't, funny no masks behind counter, no hand washing or sanitizing, they might have covid 19 as well and giving it to their customers.The rules are currently relaxed, we all have free will and free speech in this country and I'm in my 60's now and don't take being treated as if I was a child or 10 again by staff who obviously don't want to be there and need lessons in customer service. There was 50,000 people at St James last Saturday, mostly mask-less, sitting close together touching seats door handles etc, and the staff in here wouldn't let me touch the salt and vinegar pots for fear of infection, it's priceless.So in closing back to the van, we had salt and vinegar in there, good points nice fish and chips, young girl shop at least tried, but probably the worst customer experience I've had in a while, won't be going back would suggest owner relaxes their covid 19 fear and train their staff.

I went in to order food for family and the shop was extremely hot so I placed my order as nothing was ready and stood outside after 5 minutes the older lady called me in to pay only me waiting at the time food still wasn't ready so I went to stand back out side only to be spoken to in a very bad abrupt attitude that I had to stay inside the shop and I was going in and out which I had only been in once to order and once to pay she was very rude a disgrace to the shop if I hadn't have paid I would have left. The food on the other hand was excellent I have been going to this fish shop for approx 27 years and have never been spoken to like this different staff then last time .my son also visited and he said the staff are not nice it was the same lady in question think manager needs to learn them some customers service

A beautiful location and chip shop ruined by the two women who work there. Food is nowhere near good enough for the attitude and disrespect the older ladies gave. Nothing but rude and a stain on Amble. Demanded we stand inside, and then threatened to prepare our orders after other clients because we explained we are more comfortable waiting outside due to COVID. They insisted so we yielded, clearly a misguided attempt to enforce stringent safety rules, understandable in the present time, but their lack of respect and appreciation for our concerns was embarrassing. They also seemed to have missed the memo that COVID spreads easier INSIDE an enclosed space…I will never patron from this shop again (and I recommend you don’t either) simply due to the horrid temperament and service of the workers, I would have cancelled my order had she not threatened to keep my money!

As the title say the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! Food wasn’t greasy, the batter was delicious, the fish was thick and tasty. Just perfect. Loved the way the box was split into 2 sections too because I hate the fish plonked on top of chips.

Visited on a Sunday , three woman and 1 male working and from the very beginning it was terrible customer service they couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying so was having to shout your order over the fryers for them to hear .. the attitude to customers is disgraceful totally understand they would of have a really busy day but no one should be spoken to like that baring in mine there’s only like 3 customers aloud in the shot at one time due to distancing.. shop wasn’t due to close until 5 o clock but they stopped the que like 2 people behind me and it was 4 o clock . Turned at least 12 people away while we waited for our food alone. Then we they are boxing your food they are just so slow I think it’s time to get some younger people in to keep up with very busy service ( no disrespect )

I visited yesterday and asked for fish and chips, the fish was very good but the chips had been lying around in the chip range for a while but in fairness I called at a quiet time. What I disliked was the total lack of curtesy from the lady who served me. The box containing the fish and chips was shoved in front of me and the lady serving just turned away without a word of thanks or any eye contact. I thought she was very rude. That said I wont be troubling her again.

Fresh & delicious fish and chips! The amazing smell from the car park tempted us in, & it hit the spot!

Called this afternoon and sat outside in the sunshine fish was absolutely delicious lovely and white. Staff nice and friendly. Definitely give this place a visit if your in Amble

We arrived at the quayside just by chance, lured by the smell of cooked food.In most chip shops the Fish is all ready cooked awaiting the next customer for whenever they arrive.Not so at the Quayside, the fish was battered and cooked freshly as I eagerly waited a few minutes for the fish to cook, placed on the drainer for a minute or so it to drain, the fish was placed with the freshly cooked chips in a neat box. A few days later, I thought it must have been a one off?, I thought lets try an other portion of Fish & Chips. The Quayside didn't let me down, another fantastic portion of Fish & Chips cooked to perfection as I waited.
