So, were sat in the Old Quay House in Fowey. Its raining, people walking up and down the high street, probably asking themselves, why! But sat at the back of this super hotel, with one of the best views in Cornwall, with a crab sandwich and black coffee, suddenly I dont care its raining anymore. The hotel, its staff and the ambience/ view make this a perfect place to relax, always. Why not try it yourself. Jerry, Volvo Penta, Cornwall, UK

The restaurant is lovely, quite classy. Our food was excellent, the quality is reflected in the price though. The setting is beautiful. The night we ate here the restaurant wasn’t busy so there wasn’t a great deal of atmosphere, however the staff were very attentive. I probably wouldn’t revisit as we prefer somewhere a little cheaper with a bit more of a buzz.

My wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with dinner at this favourite of ours. It did not disappoint. My wife had made the advance reservation and requested a table by the French windows overlooking the terrace - this was remembered and we had the table of our choice. The management and staff were truly delightful - professional yet friendly and welcoming in an informal style, nothing was too much trouble. We had a delicious range of fish from the varied menu - all cooked to perfection - accompanied by a lovely bottle of albarino. Unlike, so many, this restaurant has managed to get the balance right; unpretentious, high quality fresh food, cooked beautifully - all backed up by excellent friendly service. Thank you, we shall continue to return!

Loved this place from the minute we arrived. Superb service from the young Gabriel and the equally impressive barman. Food was impressive as was the timeliness of service and attentiveness of the manager. The cod and hake were outstanding as were the nibbles, cheesecake and cheese. Everything was first-class and we were very happy to pay for such quality. We will be back and recommend this place to others. Well done and thanks to the staff.

We visited here for the final meal of our holiday, as a treat and unfortunately were very disappointed! We were seated and then questioned twice about our booking. There was no atmosphere it was very quiet for a Friday night. The menu was very limited and was different to the one displayed outside. Our food came quickly, but it was cold and bland. I had the mussels and had to spit one out as it was disgusting and my partners lobster was cold and chewy. We opted out of the desserts but had to wait a while to have our bill brought to us after requesting it. The service was poor and the staff seemed to lack training. I would not recommend!

We had a lovely cream team at the Old Quay House in May 2024, sitting outside in the sunshine overlooking the boats. I don’t know how anyone can review the Old Quay. We visited 3 times in a week, and stood for ages at an unmanned “please wait to be seated” sign before we gave up. One chap had managed to get served by was fruitlessly looking for someone to pay. We had a similar negative experience last year, when at least we found a staff member, who declined to let us sit on the terrace as “it was for residents only” despite being empty.

What a fabulous hotel! We stayed for three nights in a lovely room with doors opening on to a picturesque river view. The food was absolutely fantastic and the service provided by all the staff was faultless. As many people have said the fact that there is no onsite parking is a small downside but as long as you factor in the cost of a taxi to and from the long term car park this can easily be overcome, and it’s worth it to stay in such a lovely hotel. We will definitely go back.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at old quay house, and I must say it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Not only was the food delicious, but the impeccable service provided by our waitress Megan , truly elevated our evening. From the moment we were seated, she greeted us with a warm smile and a genuine enthusiasm that set the tone for the entire meal. Her knowledge of the menu was impressive, and she took the time to explain recommendations based on our preferences. Throughout the meal, she was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our glasses were always filled, and our needs were met promptly. Her professionalism and attention to detail were evident, and it made us feel truly valued as customers. As for the food, it was a culinary delight. Each dish was prepared with care, and the flavors were a symphony for the taste buds. Whether you're a fan of classic dishes or looking to try something more adventurous, Old Quay has a diverse menu that will satisfy every palate. The ambiance of the restaurant is also worth mentioning. It's a perfect blend of cozy and upscale, making it an ideal spot for both intimate dinners and larger gatherings. In summary, Old Quayis not just a place to eat; it's an experience. The combination of delectable food and exceptional service provided by Megan made our evening truly memorable. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience. Thank you, Megan , and Old Quay, for making our night, We'll definitely be back!

My girlfriend and I ate in the restaurant on a Monday evening, perhaps not a traditionally busy day, but our table at 6:30pm was that last available! We were greeted at checkin by the front of house manager who graciously welcomed us and dealt with some minor confusion over our late booking with consummate ease. We were shown to a comfortable seating area and offered drinks whilst our table was readied. A couple of glasses of Prosecco followed nearly instantly accompanied by the menus and a polite question about any allergies—I’m dairy intolerant which was noted. A short while later we were shown to our table in the middle of the restaurant overlooking the estuary where our wine awaited. An amuse bouche and bread (served with butter and oil for the non dairy) followed shortly which started the culinary delights. My partner was served a sweet potato foam and for me a smoked salmon and caper dish (non dairy). Both were absolutely delicious. Smoked mackerel starters followed for us both (one with a dairy foam and one without). These were absolutely delightful. Mains came with perfect timing and looking amazing; roast cod for me and chicken breast for my partner. Both were delicious. We rounded things off with an Irish coffee and a panna cotta which as expected we’re amazing. All in all an absolutely top drawer dining experience paired with truly impeccable service. Many a Michelin starred restaurant could learn from the Old Quay House. Can’t wait to return

Booked based on previous reviews. The food was amazing, the service was great, but it just lacked atmosphere! We found it very clinical. I had smoke mackerel for starters, which was cooked to perfection followed by the pea and lemon risotto, which was to die for! Would have loved to be offered to sit out on the balcony overlooking the harbour itself but weren't given the option. Unfortunately, we could have been in a service station in Exeter for all we knew. This, however, shouldn't detract from both the service and food, which was excellent.

Not quite the experience we wanted to celebrate 40th Wedding Anniversary. Service was a bit hit and miss especially when they weren't particularly busy. Waited for dessert order to be taken with staff just walking past ignoring us. In the end got up and paid as the moment had gone! Fir what we paid not good enough. Pros - Nice setting and good service. - Fish was cooked well and the pork cheek starter was nice - Nice wine - Beautifully presented food Cons - Food was lasting flavour and generally a bit disappointing. - Lacked seasoning - Three of the meals (Blade of Beef, the Risotto and the beetroot starter) were very average, presented well but didn’t really taste of much Average food but did not meet our expectations based on the setting and price. Probably wouldn’t visit again or recommend to friends.

This is a wonderful small restaurant with fantastic views of the estuary. They do a three or five course menu with three or four choices for the starter, main and dessert. The quality and presentation of the food was exceptional. The service was friendly and professional. We felt we could take our time and enjoy every course. We did visit during the week so I guess it could be busier at the weekends. We had a table in the middle of the restaurant but still had views of the estuary and the boats. Found this gem during a busy Saturday in July when we thought everywhere in Fowey was fully booked. The restaurant is part of the hotel so maybe why it’s not so obvious a place to book for dinner and what a find! Menu and wine list were not extensive but extremely well chosen and perfect for us - our fish was cooked to perfection. We managed to get a table for lunch time (12pm) and as we were first there, we were able to get the prime table - in the middle of the room, facing the beautiful river, watching the boats go by.The staff were friendly and attentive, but didn't bother us. Always happy to help. The food was superb - possibly the best fish and chips ever (even the mushy peas that my wife hates were a hit)! The local cheeses were great too, a good portion, but not too much. Also a great local cider, which I then searched for online and found in the local shop to take home as a momento. In terms of COVID, like all restaurants we experienced in Cornwall - plenty of hand sanitiser, the tables looked clean and staff had their masks on. I saw the waiters wipe down tables once the table was clear. We visited Rick Stein's (pop up) the night before and actually preferred this place instead!I hope to visit again when we are next in Fowey.

This was our final evening eating out on our Cornwall break. We had already had 2 really good meals out. Due to Covid I had booked at least a month in advance. Everywhere has obviously had to reduce the number of covers they are able to provide. There were good safety measures in place and tables were also spaced a good distance apart. The menu was quite limited, so it didn't take long to decide what to have. There was an amuse bouche served which looked delicious, however was sadly lacking in any flavor. Our meals were served by male waiters both wearing face coverings. They were not particularly engaging with us, and appeared somewhat disinterested. There was no ambiance in the dinning area. ( which could be due to reduced numbers of guests). As the evenings were cooler and starting to get dark earlier we were unable to see any view across the estuary which I'm sure must be lovely in the summer months.A pleasant evening, food was well presented on lovely serve wear, but sadly lacking in seasoning, My main meal was missing a vital element and when I queried this, I felt that I was not given a truthful answer. My husbands main meal however he really enjoyed and commented on the perfect cooking of his steak. We both had the panna cotta for dessert which was delightful. On reflection this was the most expensive meal that we had out of three, having eaten in Padstow & Truro on previous evenings.

This was our first visit to Fowey and wanted to eat somewhere memorable to start our Xmas stay, in this beautiful seaside town. The restaurant is situated over looking the estuary which must be especially stunning in the summer. The restaurant overall has an ambience of great class. The evening menu was made up of a fixed menu and you can choose 5 courses for £45 or 2 courses for £37.50 (we went for the latter) You also get local made bread complimentary with special local butters.. A very good touch. We all choose differently for Entrees from Haddock tart with poached egg to Pork Belly and my wife the beetroot.. All good portions. The main courses were again served beautifully two of us going for the Cod while my daughter going for the blade of beef, recommended by the waiter. Most importantly the service was of the highest standard and extremely welcoming, with good knowledge of the menu and various wines. We were recommended the Pinotage which was simply superb. In a very penny pinching way each side dish was an extra £4. i found the menus a bit pretentious and some of the ingredients of not particularly high quality. I was walking past with 3 year old daughter. She persuaded me that we ought to have a look in the restaurant out of curiosity. In the event we stopped for a very fine pint of Estrella and some truffle smoked nuts. We had a really fun 30 minutes watching the world go by on the Estuary and I'm very grateful to the staff for giving us such a good table. I'll be back!

We visited the restaurant at the end of August for a family dinner. The service was friendly and attentive and the food had the potential to be great. The raw ingredients looked good and fresh and the combinations were interesting but... everything was heavily over-salted, to the extent that I couldn't finish my main. This is such a basic error and really disappointing for an established restaurant, especially given the hefty London prices.

A quaint looking restaurant with hotel rooms above. Beautiful waterside terrace with fantastic views. We had a table overlooking the water - which at any other time would have been fantastic but was spoilt by the cigarette smell coming from those on the terrace.

We booked to eat here while staying over the river in Polruan. The food was delicious with some really interesting flavours including the vegetarian options - and the staff were aware of some of the common pitfalls for vegetarians including the gelatin in the pannacotta. The location is amazing with gorgeous views over the river. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a little bit posh and a little bit chilled. Exactly what we were looking for! Would definitely return the next time we're in the area.

We were visiting nearby and were recommended The Old Quay House for our 20th wedding anniversary. We were really impressed from when we first opened the door. We had a drink in the bar. We had a great table overlooking the river. We are both vegetarian and all 5 courses were superb. It was modern cuisine with great flavoured food. The service was attentive. The Cornish cheeses and port was a perfect end to the meal. Highly recommend for a special meal.

Arrived here with my wife and daughter around 8.15 to what seemed a nice coastal restaurant pub diner. The was a few tables that had not been cleared with quite a lot of waste food on . I thought then the food must be bad here . We were shown to a table reluctantly and told to order when we were ready. We chose our meals and I went to the bar to pay . I asked about the sign that said expect an half hour wait only to be told they had stopped serving food 2 minutes ago at 8.30 . We swiftly left , furious with this poor management and lack of customer service. I’d have thought restaurants would have welcomed business during the holiday season. Obviously not. Avoid unless you want to be let down

We had a meal here and opted for the 3 course menu. I have to say the staff were excellent. I have a dairy intolerance and before I got to the restaurant they checked for allergies and were very careful when I arrived making sure my menu choices were dairy free. A pre dinner drink on the terrace is a must. Make sure you arrive an hour before to sit and enjoy a drink by the water whilst perusing the menu. Good choices, lots of fresh fish options and extensive wine menu. We had the Salcome gin with tonic which was delicious and new apparently. Food quality was very good, great atmosphere even seated inside and knowledgeable attentive staff. Must visit in our opinion

Dit is een mooi restaurant onderdeel van een goed hotel, doch ook frequent bezocht door passanten. Fraaie, vooral vis georiënteerde gerechten die aantrekkelijk worden gepresenteerd. Correcte service.

Stayed as guest and decided to have a meal here one night. I am an occasional fish eater but was very impressed with the Cod main course. The fish was cooked beautifully with a tasty topping and sauce. The other diner is often underwhelmed by the vegetarian option but the polenta cakes and accompaniments were very good. I ordered a range of sides including potatoes, broccoli and mixed greens - these were fantastic! Each with a little twist to notch them up a level.

We had a lovely meal at the Old Quay House a couple of weeks ago. All dishes were craftfully prepared and service was good. Best crackling fish skin of all the pan roasted fish dishes we had during our holiday in Cornwall, still managing a suckulent and moist fish meat. That's quite hard to handle, being a bit of a hobby chef myself! A couple of dishes needed some extra pizzazz, and service could be a bit more attentive, although they all were very nice and polite. Very near an excellent mark, but still, very good indeed.

We had a very enjoyable lunch on the Terrace this week. The food was excellent and the service good. Lovely views of the river and well worth a visit. The only downside is the lack of maintenance of the hotel which is looking really shabby on the outside which is a pity. A few more umbrellas on the terrace would not go amiss!

Absolutely fantastic seafood and service seaside . A beatific hotel that welcomes us as lingering lunch guests. We tried a Pinot Grigio Rose (which I’d not heard of before ) as well as a local beer from dynamite Valley brewery and the perfect afternoon was made . We had the mussels which were clean and balanced and so tender . We also got the white crab with tomatoe gazpacho. I could have swam in that dish.

We were looking for somewhere to enjoy a cream tea with a good view of the river in Fowey. This is a fairly upmarket venue with a sunny terrace over the river and looked ideal. It all came apart when we ordered.

Right on the waters edge this is in a superb location if the weather is good. A sitting area outside overlooking the estuary is delightful on a sunny evening. The food was good but not exceptional.

We booked a table by phone , very friendly call handler. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff at the bar and shown to our table. We ordered faggots with mash potato and onions and the Vegetable ragu with cheese & herb crust served with garlic bread and salad. Both meals were delicious. We had desert as well , apple, blueberry, and strawberry crumble served with hot custard and Creme Brulee, again both delicious. The atmosphere was laid back, relaxed but attentive to customers. It was so friendly, and customers interacted and chatted, which was great! Would definitely recommend this quirky olde world pub , it has a charm of its own. Reasonably priced, too, and generous portions.
