What an amazing traditional pub, cosy, welcoming and serves delicious food at very reasonable prices, and lovely staff too. Extensive menu and specials. I've eaten here several times in the past 6 months, and every meal I've tried here has been exceptional. I can't see how The Halzephron hasn't got 5 star ratings across the board. Well recommended.

Interesting!! As a local we go here now and then and it’s always been really welcoming. However, on a recent trip we were made to feel very uncomfortable. There was a lady that seemed to be in charge who was outright rude all evening. Very disappointing, she made snide comments at every interaction and created a very unpleasant atmosphere in the whole pub. She snapped at the younger bar staff too (who were doing a lovely job) I’ve no idea who you are my darling but I’d advise a career change immediately and not a moment later. Hopefully this issue will be rectified on our next visit.

Lovely pub, great food, atmosphere and service. We had a Sunday roast, the vegetarian nut roast was particularly tasty! Great portion sizes and the homemade horseradish sauce was amazing! The dogs also give it a paws up as they were given lots of fuss and treats! Highly recommend!

A little gem of a pub tucked away a stone's throw from some stunning scenery and walks. I was welcomed and treated extremely well. Beer was great (tested extensively) as were a few other items from the bar. Food, both breakfast and dinner, were well prepared, hearty and extremely tasty. It is obvious a lot of care goes into the food. The rooms were nicely appointed, and were exactly as you would expect from an historic old pub. Bathroom was modern with a nice shower. If you are passing you should pop in! Returned, just as good if not better!

We booked a table by phone , very friendly call handler. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff at the bar and shown to our table. We ordered faggots with mash potato and onions and the Vegetable ragu with cheese & herb crust served with garlic bread and salad. Both meals were delicious. We had desert as well , apple, blueberry, and strawberry crumble served with hot custard and Creme Brulee, again both delicious. The atmosphere was laid back, relaxed but attentive to customers. It was so friendly, and customers interacted and chatted, which was great! Would definitely recommend this quirky olde world pub , it has a charm of its own. Reasonably priced, too, and generous portions.

We walked here along the coastal path from Gunwalloe beach, so was pretty hungry and thirsty when we arrived. Pretty quiet when we visited. Inside was empty but it was out of season, and a hot day so outside was busy though. We managed to get a table though. Staff were pleasant when we arrived. We ordered some food and it didn't take to long to arrive. Steak pie and chips £16 Burger and chips £16. Pretty standard pub prices now a days. Portions were a good size. The chips where thick and crispy and tasted great. The pie and burger also tasted great. I would have prefered the steak and ale sauce to have been thicker than what it was though.

We ordered venison and wagyu burger. Quite tasty, although chips here never taste or look particularly home made. Disappointed with the dessert - we ordered Treacle tart, but the taste of lemon was so overwhelming that you lost the taste of the treacle. The pastry was also a little hard. At £8 , it's pricey too.

Called in on Saturday and booked a table for the Sunday evening. Upon arrival the staff member could not find a booking and after I insisted that I had seen it being written down she then found it had been booked for Monday. We were told that the only place she could offer us was in the annexed part of the pub which is less than clean and apparently an overflow area mainly used by people with dogs etc. It can only be compared to a poor transport cafe but still charging restaurant prices. It is a narrow untidy space with dirty wet floor and walking to our table was an obstacle course trying to avoid dogs and a dog water bowl. The food was not good and expensively priced. My wife ordered fishcakes from the specials menu which at £18.95 she thought would be something worth having, wrong decision. I ordered gammon, the only good thing was the fried eggs accompaniment. We were asked on two occasions if everything was okay but when we explained our concerns we were told "sorry" but not offered any resolution. We are on holiday and were intending to book again if the experience had been good but will not now be returning. In short, average but expensive pub food in unclean surroundings and not very good service. An evening we had looked forward to but bitterly regret.

Wow, what can I say .... After needing late night emergency accommodation, we made the call to this pub with a brief explanation and got a room about 9.30pm. On arrival Claire was expecting us and very quickly got us a much needed drink, she was very fast to ask if we had eaten, we hadn't and she offered us food (obviously not served at this time) she said she would "just knock us up some sandwiches!!! They were amazing and far more than just "sandwiches." The hospitality offed was just non-stop, heart felt, and so caring that we had everything needed. The rooms are fantastic with everything needed an amazing cornish biscuits 😋. We were asked what time we would like breakfast and agreed to 8/8.30. Unfortunately, we were very late down due to dealing with the AA ! My partner popped down and explained, and David simply said, " Please don't worry. Just come whenever you are ready." We didn't get down till 10.30, and both Claire & David were so accommodating we just expected maybe coffee and toast at this time.... No no No we got the works !! Full English beautifully cooked and presented by David and amazing coffee from Claire! They organised us onwards transport and gave us a very happy fair well goodbye. You have to visit this amazing quirky old pub, the service, welcome, and food in more than 100 percent! The view of the sea and outside areas are also perfect 👌 Thank you guys for your exceptionally kind hospitality 😊

Nice cosy pub. Wide range of food, plenty of variety of drinks. Service was ok but could have been better. Had a pot of tea when we first got in, very nice but the empty teapot stayed on the table until the dessert arrived and the waitress had to be prompted to take it. One of the barmaids was quite obtuse, seemed more interested in moaning about the several jobs she was holding down rather than paying attention to the clients. The lad on in the afternoon was poles apart, Alex I think his name was, couldn't do enough, made conversation and was really welcoming.

The Halzephron is not our most local pub, but we always travel the short distance to savour in the delicious culinary delights, good choice of ‘sharps’ ales, homely environment and incredibly warm and friendly customer service from Claire and her team. You always leave feeling like you’ve had a wonderful time visiting friends. The food in particular is cooked fresh (and the fish sometimes caught fresh that day by one of the landlords!) Doesn’t get better than that. The portions are plentiful and flavoursome, The interior is filled with history and charm…home from home. Having read some of the more recent reviews, this is clearly a ‘witch-hunt’ by a small handful of the locals. These are locals that have been treated by Claire and the team in the most hospitable way over the years, in the only way they know! So, to backstab, send appalling threatening communications, causing alarm and distress in the most traitorous way over a visit by the local hunt on Boxing Day is beyond disgusting! They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves! I’m not a hunt supporter, but this was a one off visit and The Halzephron clearly don’t discriminate against anyone, they remain neutral towards all, as a public house should! I understand they gave refreshments both to pro and anti hunt supporters. I also understand, because they have been threatened with all sorts of despicable recriminations they will no longer serve drinks to the Cury Hunt. I hope those few locals and any other ‘Out of County’ hangers on are proud of their low life actions and if those that genuinely support the pub had their way, they would never be allowed to set foot in it again!

My wife and I returned to the Halzephron Inn to celebrate our 54th Wedding Anniversary. We have been here before in previous years. One always returns with a little apprehension in case the premises have changed since our last visit. We need not have worried! The Inn has a warm welcome and great atmosphere, the room was clean and well equipped. The breakfasts are huge and well prepared. We ate dinner here for the two nights of our stay having different seafood starters and mains from an extensive menu on each night. The standard was excellent and I can say this after 15 years as a commercial fisherman! Just wish we could have stayed longer to sample some of the other dishes on the menu! The sweets were also great and my wife rated the mince pies cooked by our host as some of the best she has eaten. We spent our days birdwatching and walking at the lovely Gunwalloe Church beach and on the Lizard. I would love to return for some mothing in the Spring. One of our favorite locations!!!

Upon entering the pub the rustic, classic charm was obviously present, however sadly that's where the charm went Generally the service was okay, although front of house staff could be a bit more disciplined and knowledgeable when it came to the food they were serving. The food sadly was the worst part of our evening. Even sadder this is not the standard I used to know the halzephron. To start I had the small chowder. This was flavoured okay but was lacking substance, the sauce was too thin and the distinct lack of seafood was disappointing, 1 piece of smoked salmon, 3 small prawns and a piece of white fish didn't quite make up a full small bowl and due to the sauce being thin had all sunk to the bottom. Main course I had the seasbass with stir fried vegetables. The bass was cooked okay but could have done with a crisper skin, this was served on 'stir fried' vegetables and prawns which were soggy and drowning in butter, this dish had no balance, even a bit of lemon would of helped lift it a little, I also had 4 new potatoes with the dish that were just a bit dull. This dish could be elevated so much better and is sad that the chef doesn't seem to have taken much care in the dish. Chocolate Torte was dessert and was the best course, nice rich genache on a crumbly biscuit base and clotted cream, tasty, if I'm picky then the base could do with a bit more butter and possibly so other flavours thrown in. Sadly I don't think the owners are willing to change. I strongly believe if there was another pub or restaurant in Gunwallow they would be struggling

Sadly, this lovely little traditional pub is in dire need of a complete revamp. It’s so tired and grubby. The paint is peeling off, surfaces feel sticky and nothing has been renewed in a long, long time. We want to love it, and indeed have visited often, but today will be the last time. The pork medallions were tough and inedible. Some of the vegetables ( new potatoes) were pleasant, the rest were akin to overcooked school lunch. So disappointing. I think the extensive menu is not achievable to a quality standard and can’t possibly be fresh. Pleasant staff but no resolution offered other than telling the chef that the meat was inedible.

I live locally and this has been one of my go to places when friends come to stay for good food and friendly service, that was up to 13th August this year when I visited with my wife and 10 members of the over eighties...

Sunday lunch had a lovely menu. Carrots & parsnips described as roasted & these were both definitely boiled. Veg was nice however cauliflower cheese was more a cauliflower in white sauce. We didn’t feel at all rushed however service was slow & no salt & pepper on table or condiments offered as our lunch was delivered. We had to ask. Meat was lovely but don’t feel this was great value for money

I don’t like to write a negative review, but this is needed - if only to stop anyone else making a mistake and purchasing one of these overpriced awful creations; with expectations based on the ‘Made with care’ claims made on these products. We had one of Fee’s ready meals last night: the chicken leek and tarragon pie. Supposed to be a treat but was anything but. Had it not been too late to prepare an alternative I would have just put it in the bin. £13+ for a grey, gelatinous, unpleasant over-seasoned mush under an ill-fitting top of what cannot ever be described as pastry. Overpriced and dreadful. The cooking time was completely wrong - 45 minutes and the inside was still semi-frozen. Even allowing for appliance variations this was out by around 15 minutes. Whilst one expects some compromise with pre-prepared meals, they can be, and are, far better than this. I’d say Fee’s is trading on some clever marketing and a reputation built on this but the products themselves are sub- standard and not even on a par with the much cheaper, mass-produced supermarket ready meals. Not an experience I’d recommend.

Lovely little pub with great beer selection, Spingo beer is one of the worlds greatest 💚
