Have just been to Psalters for Sunday lunch to celebrate a friends birthday. The menu had some very interesting items on it but we opted for the roast beef. Veg were served separately and were perfectly cooked.Great value at £28 for 2 courses. The staff were so helpful and attentive. I am coeliac but almost everything had a GF option. We sat in an inner courtyard for coffee afterwards which was lovely. Very interesting old pub I would highly recommend.

Everything feels positive about this restaurant, nice tables , nice staff until the main courses arrive. It seems chef's motto is...pile the plates as high and full as possible; surely nobody in Dunster will complain about that! Fish, meat everything is piled on top of some undercooked vegetables. I had to ask for an extra plate to put my fish on in order to see what was underneath. The owner said " oh it could have been served separately"...but how do you know when you order it. A lamb dish came with yorkshire pudding. If you want quantity go to the Psalters restaurant; if you want quality pass it by. What a shame.

Staying at the Luttrell Arms for two nights and we had a 3 course meal from Psalter’s Restaurant on the first night. Choosing a starter was a challenge. My partner and I do not like fish leaving us with one dish available to us, Cauliflower and Parsnip soup. The soup came out piping hot however, we were unaware that it would have a spicy nature to it causing a surprise. The menu mentioned it would be served with bread and butter however, this never came. Moving on to the main course, again we sat down at 7:00pm and the restaurant had already sold out of multiple options on the menu meaning that again, if you did not like fish then there were little options left. Steak, chicken and a burger was all that was available. We both ordered the Gourmet Burger. When they came you could see that the buns were clearly over toasted and came out burnt, meaning it left a charcoal taste in your mouth after the first bite. The rest of the burger was extremely dry, no sauces were offered to compensate the dryness. Even though my partner and I ordered the same meal, my burger came with 4 slices of gherkin and hers came with 1 slice of gherkin meaning that care was clearly not taken when putting the burgers together. When dessert came, it was presented very well. The chocolate curl on it, had little taste but the ice cream and biscuit was very nice. The next morning we sat down for breakfast at 9:10am. Ordering off of the menu again, there was no option to select certain items off the menu. My partner and I wanted some apple juice from the cold buffet. When we sat back down at the table and took a taste, the apple juice was sour and clearly out of date with bits floating in the juice. Moving on to the food, my partner did not want a cooked breakfast so went for the cold buffet, selecting a croissant and toast, both were nice. I ordered a full English, with scrambled eggs. When it came out I can only say I was disappointed. The first thing I noticed was that I had 3 pieces of bacon but not one rasher, I had 3 pieces of offcuts bacon. I had one sausage that when bitten into broke up and was very dry, just like the burger the previous evening. The black pudding had a long hair within it meaning it was not very appealing. The beans and eggs were the only hot things on my plate, showing that the food had been clearly sat under a hot plate or something and that the eggs and beans were either microwaved or cooked just before being brought out. I ordered tea to have with my breakfast and again I was disappointed as it was not hot, luke warm at best. Throughout dinner and breakfast, flies were an issue. People throughout the restaurant could be seen flapping them away all evening and morning and they were really off putting during meal times. My partner and I, overall were disappointed with the food at Psalter’s and will most likely not be returning to eat there again.

We went for a family celebration as we were staying in the hotel. The menu looks very interesting and we were looking for a change from pub food. The staff front of house were very attentive and friendly. However the food was extremely disappointing. Our vegetarian had to order bar food as the vegetarian option was sold out. In addition that turned out to be a very ordinary and dry cannaloni. A few of us ordered the monkfish and sea coleslaw. This turned out to be monkfish strips in an armour hard and over fried batterd coating. The coleslaw was iceberg lettuce, lots of raw peanuts and a sprinkle of samphire. None of us were able to find any evidence of the charred lychee detailed in the description. The artichoke starter was very bland also .. but the desserts were very nice. So it was a very disappointing event from a culinary point of view.

We had an amazing meal in this restaurant with interesting combinations you would never put together yourself but they work! Staff were extremely helpful, friendly and attentive. Even the younger members of staff are well trained. We were initially put at a table in the middle of the restaurant. I find this uncomfortable as I like to have my back to a wall. The young waiter, Alfie, noticed I was uncomfortable and offered to move us - which we did. I was very impressive that he was attentive enough to notice. This goes a long way to add to the enjoyment of our culinary experience.

We dined on our first night in the Luttrell Arms. We were aware of the menu being limited due to a refit. We managed to find a choice on the menu. Everything was good and the service excellent. We would have dined on the following night, but were told that the menu would be unchanged. So had to make other arrangements. Would have thought they would have changed the menu as a bit of imagination could have provided alternatives.

Chose Psalters for an evening meal based on the menu in the doorway of the hotel it is attached to (Luttrell Arms) - however, the menu for the restaurant is different from that, as that is the bar menu for the hotel. That being said we had a lovely meal and came away very satisfied. Decent choice but be sure to ask for the daily specials sheet as well - one of us at off that and both choices were great. Decent price, beautifully presented and decent portions without being over faced. More atmosphere in the bar area and I would get there in good time if going again and get a seat in there.

We recently had a family reunion in the Psalter's Restaurant in the Luttrell Arms, Dunster for a Sunday Lunch. We met in the adjoining lounge until our table was ready and were offered drinks from the bar while we waited for all family members to arrive. The restaurant is elegant and service was good. Four of us chose the cured salmon as a starter and were amazed when it arrived. Minimalism to the extreme - 6 tiny squares of smoked salmon with some blobs of what I think was pulverized lemon. One of us chose the chicken and black pudding and apple starter which was very large but was followed by a very small bowl of (admittedly delicious) fish and seafood. The rest of us had huge helpings of roast beef or pork, with large yorkshire puddings and potatoes. Generous helpings of vegetables were served separately. Puddings were on the small side. After the large helping of roast meat, I only had room for a coffee. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The beef was very tender, vegetables al dente, potatoes crispy and yorkshire puddings delicious. The venue is ideal for a special family meal and it is a lovely old hotel in a historic village. I would certainly recommend it for a visit.

Great service and location but food had a slightly dated look like one of the best efforts from Masterchef candidates. While meats (pork and partridge) were cooked well there seem to be a random selection of accompaniments not all of which went together such as a savoury bread and butter pudding and strange gel blocks and to be honest fairly tastless blobs and streaks across the plates of both mine and my wife's plates. Sadly the cheesecake we shared was not much better as it was tasteless lacking any sweetness whatsoever- perhaps the sugar tax has hit early. Maybe we chose the wrong dishes and we certainly hope to visit the fantastic hotel its situated in so may give it another go.

Six of us ate here on Saturday 30th January 2017. The starters were all excellent and those of us who had meat or game for their main course were very happy. Two of us had fish and were unimpressed. I chose the Fruits de Mer which was billed as consisting of octopus (check, a piece about 2” long), oysters (check, x 3), scallops (check, x 3), various forms of sea vegetable (check, probably) and samphire - which was absent. However, I did get an unexpected langoustine (at least that is seafood) and half a dozen small black potatoes which were, I was told, to represent the rocks in a rock pool. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to eat them or if they were purely decorative; I cut one open and it was an unappealing dark grey on the inside, as if blighted or previously frozen. Perhaps it was a heritage variety that I hadn’t come across before but if so, I would like to have been told. All the meat/game eaters got spinach although only one dish should have had it, and the one expecting green beans didn’t get any. This meal cost in excess of £50 a head but, even at half the price, I would have expected to get what I was told I could expect. Fortunately, we all found it quite funny and the experience was saved by our waiter, Ritchie, who was courteous, attentive and professional. But, I wouldn’t really want to go back and risk spending all that hard-earned money for such an unpredictable experience.

After a lovely visit to the castle, this looked inviting. Whoops! Bad choice. I ordered the ravioli or A piece of ravioli as it turned out. I said that I didn't order it as a starter only to be told it was the main meal! I eat slowly for health reasons but it took me about 3 minutes to eat. I had to order some chips as I was still very hungry, requested some ketchup and again and again! My husband had fish and chips but asked for plain peas as he doesn't like mushy, but "we don't have normal peas". I complained then 5 minutes later, hey presto a portion of peas akin to an egg cup arrived. We didn't want to waste any more money on a desert but instead went down the road to the little grocery shop to buy some food. We bet that grocers make a killing on all the custom they get from still hungry diners!

It has been a long time since we had an evening meal here as we had a very disappointing meal here a few years ago. It has all changed here since then with new owners and the restaurant looking very smart. When we booked, we found out it was 'Foodie Thursday' with a special menu offering something different to usual. I chose the Sautéed Chicken Livers to start followed by the Salmon then Pear and Frangipane Tart, all of which were really delicious. My wife had the Deep Fried Mussels, the Duck Eggs for main then dessert was a hard choice as she does not like ice cream but does like almonds so she chose the Warm Chocolate Mousse which had Almond Ice Cream which was amazing! The whole meal was a great experience and my wife is keen for us to return again soon and try the a la carte menu. The staff were very attentive and waiter Dan was very professional in his role. I'm looking forward to dining out again soon at Psalters.

The dining room is lovely, but can be a bit chilly at times, so make sure you bring a cardigan or similar. The bar is lovely for pre-drinks and after dinner. With the food in the restaurant, we have had mixed experiences. Either it was amazing (The head chef had a night off, so we panicked a bit), but it was stunning food and the options were lovely. The next time, we didn't fancy the starter menu and were told by the first waitress that we would not be able to swap for a dish from the bar menu. This was later re considered and two of us chose the pate from the bar menu whilst the other two had the normal menu. The starters were ok, but the mains were very disappointing. I have had better food in some local cafe's. None of us were that keen. The third time, the food was nicer again, but still not up to the standard as some of the other Dunster restaurants. Far too much fruity ingredients with all the starters and mains. A bit too fussy and would have preferred a bit more subtle dishes, with less ingredients, just cooked to perfection as we are so spoiled with our local produce available.

A dinner party here with friends was rather disappointing as the service was unexpectedly sluggish and erratic, with wine late served. Several side dishes were initially missing, for which were not then charged. The courses varied; some, as one hoped, were indeed pretty good but several seemed unduly pretentious with over decoration in lieu of actual substance. The dining room was reasonably busy but there were periods later in the evening and when we wanted the bill when the place was bereft of staff for several minutes and certainly one was left waiting longer than is acceptable.I rather hope my next dinner party here will be less troubled and up to the expected standard.

We stay at the Luttrell frequently & love it. We have always enjoyed very good dinners in the restaurant & would like this review to be positioned in that context. We were given a lovely table & greeted warmly on arrival & despite the restaurant being fairly busy including a large party, the staff seemed on top of it all & service was satisfactory. The Prosecco some of the best I've had in a restaurant. The menu was different from the usually Sunday dinner here which usually consists of mainly roasts & looked interesting & tempting. Our server who was the lady restaurant manager was helpful & skilled at discussing the dishes with us, which assisted in making choices. All good so far. Sadly the food did not live up to expectations. My scallop starter was bland & my honest opinion was that they had been hanging around in a freezer for too long. My husband's game starter (partridge?) was dry, overcooked & tasteless. Moving on to mains, hoping for something better. Sadly not, my sea bass was overcooked, tasteless with a hard texture. His game dish (pheasant) again, tasteless. The accompaniments to both dishes the same. All four dishes we tried tasted as if they had been lingering too long in a freezer as everything was devoid of any taste. By now we did reluctantly complain & did not eat these dishes after trying them. The lady manager dealt with it in the very best way possible. We did not feel like by now selecting other dishes, so it was agreed (as we were staying at the hotel & our dinner was prepaid) a financial adjustment would be made, which it was, a very fair & generous one, on check out. I wish to stress that this did not spoil our stay & we shall stay at the Lutt again as we have always had good experiences here. In fact I recommended the hotel to a large party of people the next day. I would like to think this was a blip, or perhaps we will eat somewhere else in the village on our next stay. I think we were just the victim of unfortunate circumstances as a one off. The day was unexpectedly warm & sunny & the village & the Lutt both stacked out with people, most of whom were eating, well into late afternoon & people were still ordering food. I think this may have been unexpected & unplanned for. Perhaps coupled with the large party at dinner, it may have left the kitchen short & had to make last minute changes, especially as the dinner menu was not available to view during the afternoon after requesting that. My hotel review has given 5 stars as usual as we love the Lutt & the stay was perfect. The breakfast the next day was totally delicious, fresh & tasty as always. So I have tried to be fair with my reviews & as I say, we were very fairly & kindly treated to make up for our disappointment.

We had booked a meal for two in Psalter's restaurant, as it was a special occasion we decided to eat in here rather than from the bar menu (which we had previously done and was delicious). We were greeted at the door and immediately had the drinks we chose brought to us. There was no fussing for us to 'hurry up and order' even although the restaurant was fully booked. The waitress fully explained our questions about some of the dishes whilst I supped a fantastic Bloody Mary. We chose Scallops and Rabbit to start, and the Lamb and Beef Wellington for mains. The scallops came with the best black pudding I've ever tasted and the Rabbit was both interesting and tasty. There was plenty of it for a starter. The mains were both ample and exceedingly well prepared. If there was to be a downside I would suggest that the Beef Wellington was very slightly overdone. Easy to do on such a hard dish to prepare I'm sure. However we demolished both meals with gusto! We were attentively served by both Waitresses and Waiters, without them 'being in your face'. After the meal we retired to the bar to meet a pleasant atmosphere. People talking, no music and everyone friendly and enjoying themselves. The meal was for a special occasion and we where both made to feel special. I would certainly go back as the menu changes daily. I paid up before I left and made sure all the staff had a tip. Thank you.

Pleasant drink in the garden but no table service so quite a trot/stairs to bar & back. The restaurant is pretty bland for such an old building. My wife's scallops were OK except for strange sauce but my pigeon was cremated. Having been on the road all day I complained but ate most of it (waitress returned and said it would not be on the bill - good but should never have left the kitchen. We both had fish for mains and I lucked out again with dry hake and rubbery gnocci. Waitresses again apologetic and said chef off ill. No excuse really as deputy should be up tp the mark. Having looked around Dunster there are better places to try.

Lovely building, rooms dotted around the lower floor with lots of choice where to eat. Refused entry to the main restaurant probably as I was wearing shorts, very hot day, although told officially not enough staff to service the restaurant. We wandered into another room and left there and went into the bar area. Excellent table near a fireplace and in a quiet part. Read through the menus and I had the best scotch egg as a starter I have had probably for the last three years. Did have to wait for quite a while for plates to be cleared, seemed to be two people waiting on around the rooms and bar staff cleared our table twice (eventually). Food: three out of four dishes were good but the 'Sunday' roast was not good at all. Dried out Yorkshire pudding (an insult to the county); this was obviously cooked early and left on top of a range probably to keep warm. The gravy served in a twee little saucepan was terrible, upon mentioning this was told 'we do not thicken our gravy'. So much for culinary knowledge, gravy:-"Gravy is made often from the juices of meats that run naturally during cooking and often thickened with wheat flour or cornstarch for added texture"; this is wikipedia's definition. The liquid was thin and tasted of a rinsed out cloth that had been near vegetables, not even the flavour from the roast pan. Very sad. When asked to pay in advance (little compartments at the bar with keys to deposit your card and they will trust you), I mentioned that I would never let my credit card out of my sight and did not spend any more apart from the lunch. Will someone learn from this?

Ate here last night. Wine good. Starters of rabbit and scallops ditto. Main of hake in some sort of crumb served on artichoke with gnocchi was all badly overcooked. Ate about 10%. Service was good and nice setting. Not likely to return as food overall was disappointing. Better places to eat in the area.

I pre-booked an evening meal for a group of 26 at Psalter's Restaurant. They went to extreme lengths to provide a menu suitable for my group and any dietary requirements we had, including two people requiring gluten free food. From this we selected our choice and returned these to the restaurant about a week in advance. The resulting meals were outstanding and the staff charming, patient and efficient. The flavours and presentation of the food was superb.

Have eaten in the bar on previous visits to Dunster, but decided to book a table for the early lunch session. Good welcome by friendly staff who showed us to the table and presented the lunch menu together with their wine list. Excellent list of dishes to choose from, with interesting options. Wine list equally interesting. The wonderful rare roast beef, matched with a great bottle of claret, followed with a shared cheese selection from the bar menu provided a very special experience. If one were to be super picky their tap water should be avoided !!! And portion of horseradish too small for us.Will definitely return again, if you enjoy relaxed dining and good food do give it a try.

The choice of food in the restaurant was very poor for the cost of the meal. I did not want a starter, so I cannot comment on them. Only five choices of main meal and four choices of dessert. As this was the first time of my visit to Dunster, my son suggested that we spoil ourselves for once. I was very disappointed with my choice of main meal, which I agree was my fault, and my dessert which I chose did not come complete. I was missing a sherbot lemon lollipop and when I ask why this was I was told they had run out. I suggest that I should have a discount on the price but the manager said that the cook would make me one if I was agreeable as it would only take 3 minutes. I agreed to this, but it was nearly 20 minutes before it arrived and I had finished eating the main part of the dessert, so not a good experience at all. I was told later that, the bar meals were great.

As we stayed at the hotel Psalters seemed the sensible option. The food was completely lovely. Had read reviews that said portion sizes could be small, but if you want a bucket visit KFC! For myself who eats well a main, with vegetable side and dessert was easily enough. Lovely food, well presented by friendly and polite staff.

Had a meal as part of room deal for a Sunday night. Food similar to that available in the bar. Prawn starter was very tasty, lamb brilliant and deserts to satisfy.Only fault was the apple sauce was from a jar, but who cares when the rest was so good. Young staff friendly and attentive, who gave us a table that was easy for my wife to sit as she walks with a crutch. Love this place

One of the signs of a good restaurant is whether or not they are prepared to go "off piste" for you.On our most recent visit my wife didn't really care for any of main courses on offer but did fancy a mix of the optional side dishes. Istvan (who took our order) was brilliant, not only was he happy to cater for such an odd order he even had some great suggestions to enhance the choice (none of which were on the menu).Service was prompt, as attentive, and as good as any of the top-notch restaurants I've experienced anywhere in the world. The restaurant itself is very we'll set out, old world, with well chosen modern furniture, cutlery, and table ware.Staff were attentive, had time to make interesting conversation but were not intrusive.Would recommend to anyone I know.

Had sunday lunch here in the Psalters Restaurant. Unfortunately the service was very slow and once orders taken or food delivered everyone disappeared! So for instance we needed salt and pepper on our table and after waiting for someone to turn up had to shout down to a young guy clearing glasses at the end of the restaurant to get us some. Likewise to ask for bread dont know where the one waitress went? Also it was extremely cold the radiators on left hand side of the room were not on this being a very cold day, we asked if it could be turned on and was told it would come on in ten minutes, needless to say nothing happened so ladies in our party had to eat in our coats, luckily the men had jumpers and jackets.Such a shame good hotel, good food, nice decor someone needs to manage the restaurant. The restaurant at their sister hotel The Royal Castle Hotel at Dartmouth is superb in every way and service is always excellent.

We opted for the Psalter restaurant for our last evening in Dunster. Situated within the Luttrell Arms in the centre of Dunster, it is a great spot to have a potter around before or after dinner. The restaurant itself is a blend of traditional and modern. On arrival we had to wait a short while to be shown to our table. On being seated we were left with menu's but no drinks orders were taken. It took quite some time for someone to eventually take our orders despite repeated attempts to catch the eye of one of the numerous staff floating about.Orders were eventually taken, and drinks served, our food order was taken at the same time, and so we can only deduce that the delay was to allow the kitchen to maintain the flow, had drinks orders been taken first, however this would have been unnecessary.Food quality was very good, I opted for the crab salad followed by roast beef, and my husband, risotto (sourced as a small portion from the mains menu) followed by beef. All the dishes were a good portion and tasty. It should be noted that the kitchen did accommodate a few tweaks to our order which was good to note.Service was not attentive during the dining experience, with the empty glass and bottle from my pre-dinner drink remaining on the table throughout the entire meal. This seemed to sum up the experience really, when serving, the staff made a point of being friendly (notably Shannon), but outside of this, no one re-visited the table and we found ourselves having to chase staff if we needed anything. It's a shame as the venue could be far better, the food quality is certainly there, as is the setting, but it was let down by inattentive management and staff, something so easy to rectify. We would go back as the food was good, and I would hope that some of the simple issues we experienced would be ironed out.

We dined here when we were staying at the Lutrell Arms hotel, where this restaurant is the upmarket option, rather than eating from the extensive bar menu. We did not regret it, as the surroundings were classy, and the service was formal but friendly, making it feel like a special occasion. It wasn't much more expensive than the bar menu too. The food was beautifully cooked and presented, from a menu featuring local produce.

The Psalter's Restaurant is located in the medieval Luttrell Arms, Hotel in Dunster. I understand the hotel and the restaurant has undergone a large refurbishment. It is a magnificent venue with great ambience and a number of very nice areas. There is a bar menu and a restaurant menu, both of which are a bit restrictive, and although I only had a light bite from the bar menu, I would have to describe it as average. Meals/bites from the bar menu have to be ordered at the bar. The service is very good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are relatively costly. This venue is worth visiting to soak up the general atmosphere of the place, but I'm not so sure about the food.

Two restaurant meals for two, two bar meals for two and Sunday lunch for six all during the last week in June. They were all excellent and included scallops, whitebait, sea bass, plaice and loin of lamb. The service was exemplary being both professional and friendly. We have eaten in the Luttrell Arms restaurant and bar on many occasions during the past thirteen years when staying in Dunster and have known the hotel through various ownerships. I can say with some certainty that the restaurant and bar meals are consistently better now than they have been during the past decade or longer. All being well we shall be back next year!

Went there for a family meal to celebrate a special anniversary for my in-laws so we were 3 generations in all. Staff were really friendly and did a nice job up until dessert; we overheard (after we had ordered) another table being told dont order the (fruit tartlet) as the pastry is tough today. Unfortunately my 87 year old mother-in-law had ordered it by then and it was indeed incredibly tough to the point it was inedible. My son who ordered the sticky toffee pudding however pronounced himself very satisfied. Main courses were enjoyed by 4/6- the 2 of us who had steak were disappointed as it was on the bone and a bit tough. My tarte tatin starter was nothing of the sort being a disc of pastry cooked ahead with then the topping added just before serving- that said it was very nice just not a genuine tarte tatin attempt. All in all I would go back and it is for sure very much better than last time we ate here a few years ago, I would just be very careful with my menu selection.

We were in Dunster over a long-weekend with a large party of family & friends walking, socialising and raising money for Cancer Research. On such occasions you're always concerned as to whether an establishment can deliver quality food for a large number of people all seated at the same time. Such concerns were fortunately blown away on this particular occasion. From the initial menu planing with the always helpful & friendly Becca Way through to the execution from the kitchen & staff on the night it was first class. With such a large group there were sure to be some queries but anything that needed sorting e.g. a billing question, an extra or different requirement on the night, was sorted quickly, efficiently & courteously.A memorable meal in a delightful restaurant and hotel.

My wife and I called in here last Sunday night while staying in Dunster. I have to say it was not our first choice for dinner but the place we were going to had sent their chef home for the night as it was so quiet! So in we went to Psalter's. First impressions were good, a friendly welcome and a warm restaurant with others dining. Not an extensive menu, about 4-5 choices on each of the starters, mains and desserts but sufficient. We went straight for the mains, roast pork and lamb, both very tasty and well presented. Sticky toffee pudding to follow, served with ice cream with very little sauce - a little disappointing, I prefer a sweet sticky sauce but well presented nevertheless. With one cappuccino, G&T and 2 glasses of wine the bill came to £53.40 which I thought was reasonable. We'd happily go again and would recommend. A nice touch was the magician wandering around the dining room doing tricks at tables while diners were waiting for their food to arrive, he spent a good ten minutes baffling us and added to the overall experience - well done the management for such an innovative idea.

I can not recommend this restaurant highly enough. The food was of such a high standard it was faultless. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and friendly but with the well trained and knowledgeable staff you would expected in one of the best restaurants in the country. The food was exquisite, made with fresh high quality ingredients. Everyone of our party has raved about it ever since and on a return visit the food was just as good.
