The Prince of Wales is a popular community pub in Cashes Green, which is on the outskirts of Stroud. Looking at it from the outside, it is rather deceptive, it is a lot bigger on the inside – rather like a tardis! It is basically a two roomed pub, the main bar and lounge which proved to be a pleasant surprise. There is a charming stone fire place and wood burning stove, it must be quite cosy sitting here during the Winter months. As soon as I walked into the pub, I was greeted by a friendly bar person, I was made to feel welcome, even though I had never set foot in the pub before. It was then that I began to realise how difficult being a bar person actually is, they have to be friendly and polite all of the time which isn't easy. I ordered scampi and chips, when it arrived it was perfectly cooked. Whilst the food was good, it would be nice to have a selection of sandwiches and baked potatoes on the menu, you don't always feel like eating a large meal. Other than this, I can recommend The Prince of Wales, for the convivial surroundings, and friendly bar staff.

Warm welcome, pleasant table in quiet corner. Food came promptly - piping hot. We chose whitebait to share as a starter - plenty for 2, very tasty. Then I had the steak pie, and my wife had scampi, both served with lots of very nice chips. Good beer, nice wine. Then we walked home. Very pleased, we'll be back. Our local pub which has just re-opened after a period of closure. Having spoken to the new landlord, and been assured that all the food was freshly and locally sourced, my wife and I booked for Sunday lunch. The food was plentiful, in face too much on one plate. The Beef, although well cooked, was the cheapest cut of Brisket. The roast potato's were from a catering supplier and had been cooked in a deep fat fryer, and were not cooked properly, hard in the middle. The yorkshire puddings were likewise supplied by a catering supplier. There was a mixture of veg of cabbage and leeks, all mixed together so you could not see what you were eating, supplemented by parsnips, sugar snap peas and mash.

The new landlords have settled in very quickly and within weeks have managed to turn the pub back into the friendly, welcoming and warm place that it used to be (even with a huge set back when it was burgled). We were lucky enough to try the food before the kitchen opened to the public and it was fantastic; the biggest bit of fish you can imagine, chunky chips and all the sides you'd expect. The garden is tidy again and more & more entertainment planned; so glad it's just a short walk/stumble away.

Visited again on Wednesday evening. The special in the restaurant is 2 Steaks AND a bottle of wine for £25!! Of course you can choose from the normal menu as well if you prefer. The two rib eye steaks were perfectly cooked and arrived sizzling on metal skillets, sitting on a bed of peppers and onions and topped off with home made crispy onion rings and grilled baby tomatoes. This is apart from the dinner plate which has the chips, salad and peas! All the staff are friendly and welcoming. Apart from couples and a party of 4, there was a lady dining alone. It's that sort of place where a lone diner can also relax and feel comfortable. We stayed for the Quiz, which is a regular weekly event and we had a great time.

This is our first time back to The Prince of Wales for a number of years. We heard the pub was under new management and that the standard was much improved. We were not disappointed. Joel was the perfect host, very friendly and helpful. The menu had all the classic home cooked food - here it definitely was prepared and cooked to order. We both had the cod and chips with mushy peas. The portion size was large! The cod was delivered that morning and freshly filleted and cooked in a beautiful light crispy batter as we ordered, totally melt in the mouth. The mushy peas and tartare sauce were also delicious. The desert we shared was pavlova - fabulous!! Cannot recommend this pub enough, we are delighted to have somewhere local again that serves great food at a great price with the bonus of great staff and atmosphere.

Went in with my family on Sunday on the off chance of a table for Sunday lunch - last minute decision to go out for lunch - and although the pub was very busy they managed to squeeze us. So glad we hung around for a table as the Sunday roast was easily the best we've had in a very, very long time. We had one of everything between us, beef, turkey and gammon and the meat was plentiful and well cooked. Very big portion with plenty of potatoes, lots of lovely veg (carrots, peas, swede and cauli/broccoli cheese) and the highlight for me; plenty of gravy! Lovely husband and wife run pub, both very friendly and proud of the pub. In comparison to some of the carvery's around, this was streets ahead in terms of quality and also cheaper so better value for money too. We will definitely be back.

Thurs 11 Sept 2014. Empty restaurant should have been the first clue! Starter of three small brie wedges and two of them were "empty". Starting to feel uncomfortable now but okay the kind waitress came and replaced them. Main of standard fish and chips and the fish was almost black! (£9.75) Now feeling very let down. Spoke to the manager who said he usually overlooked the chef, but as the whole restaurant only had 3 people in, he thought the chef could manage! What sort of manager employs a chef who cannot fry a standard piece of cod and chips. And then almost insultingly offers a reduction that works out at just £3 off the whole meal for three people. Waitress was again kind but out of her depth with this management. Poor Management Poor food Poor value for money.

We live locally and had recently been for lunch which was positive so thought we would try an evening meal. We used to go more regularly for food until it was taken over. The restaurant was empty on a Saturday night and we had some frustrating conversations with the lady behind the bar who didn't even know what wine they had, given that there was only a choice of 3 I think that's quite poor. Anyway we had starters which were very clearly not home made they were ok but i could have reheated them from tesco myself! I would rather that they cut their menu down considerably and actually cooked and made the food themselves rather than having pages and pages of choice for them to just reheat. For mains we all had something different, the curry was the most blatant out of a jar curry ever, the burger was nice but served with a tonne of anaemic oven chips. I had the exact same main that I had for a lunch only a couple of weeks before, Cajun chicken salad, it was totally different which is quite impressive for a salad. The chicken was good but there was next to no salad and on top were two slabs of stone cold straight out the freezer garlic bread. I did tell them but other than an "oh right" response they didn't seem to care. I had a load of what looked like mould in my wine glass, again made them aware and they did offer me another glass of wine but seeing as it was out of the taps I didn't fancy it, however they did still make me pay for it which was nice. If you go somewhere and things aren't great a good restaurant will cover this by dealing with it well with no awkwardness what makes a poor meal even worse is when the people working there don't actually pretend to care!

Ordered our food and it was very good for pub grub. Burgers good, lamb shank good, burger tasty. Cottage pie good. If I was going to moan it would be the salad was minimal and could do with a few more ingredients and served separately and not on a hot plate. The veg could also be served in a dish of its own . Not the biggest serving sizes but adequate . I didn't have a desert but tried the apple pie sadly that one was soggy :( it went back and wasn't added to the bill . Go on Monday lunchtime for food for a fiver. We had fish n chips and lemon meringue. Lovely. This is a family pub, run by a family for families. Friendly service, nice garden. And if you are interested in Grand Designs, Kevin McLoud is building his eco homes next door.Hazel P.

Having seen the good reviews for the Prince of Wales, , we thought we would try it for lunch. Not a good idea. I had fried cod in batter, thinking that was bound to be freshly cooked. Wrong! What I think they did was take something that had been previously cooked and reheat it in the microwave - the fish was very hot but the batter was soggy, certainly not crisp as I would expect if it had come from the frier. Of course they offered to replace it but why not just tell me it was off the menu rather than presenting something of such poor quality? Glad to say my wife had one of the specials which was much better. And the Wickwar beer was good. But we won't be going there again!

After reading so many positive reviews on here we decided to stop by for a Sunday roast. Despite their being a veggie option on the menu they didn't actually have anything available other than the roast minus the meat. The food arrived within about 5 minutes of us ordering - never a good sign. Sure enough it was microwaved and nothing on my plate actually required chewing. My friend had the traditional roast beef and was disappointed at the size as well as the mushy texture. The meals were pretty cheap but I would rather pay more and have well-cooked, quality food. As roast dinners were all that was on the menu that Sunday I felt that they should have been able to serve food fresh from the oven rather than reheated and overcooked. Maybe it was an off day but I don't think I'll risk a return visit. I think this is very much a local pub as it was busy when we went and everyone seemed to know each other. Hopefully it will prosper and the food may improve.

John and Mandy took over at The Prince (my local) just over a year ago and their efforts are now bearing fruit. They've put a lot of work into updating the outside areas and making changes to the kitchen and bars. With a 5-star hygiene rating, locally-sourced meats and a first-rate chef the meals are delicious. I had the Prawn Tempura starter, which was super, my wife had the home-made soup, again lovely. I then had the Sirloin steak and my wife had the gammon, and both were excellent, with large vegetable accompaniments, followed up with two very good Irish coffees. I've eaten in some very posh (and expensive!) joints and these meals were every bit as good. The restaurant is bright, busy and cheery, and completely separate from the public bar, which like any public bar can get boisterous, partly from having dodgy people like me in it :-) E-cigs are acceptable in the public bar only. For warmer weather there is not only outside seating at the front of the pub, but also round the back of it, with a revamped children's play area, and even a covered alcove along the side of the pub, which looks when you enter it like you've stumbled on some sort of secluded French café/bar.If you're in the Stroud area and looking for good food and drink, this is the place. We paid £53 for the two of us, which included three pints of beer and a sherry and lemonade and the Irish coffees. It's not cheap, but what is? The Prince has a lot of much less expensive offers, such as a two-for-£9.95 deal on some meals, and a full menu ranging from sandwiches through light snacks to the sort of meal we had, so there's something for every wallet and purse. We'll be back for more.

Firstly I would like to say that I cannot understand how anyone could leave a negative review for the food unless they are pretentious and expecting gastro expensive cuisine. Therefore, don't go. The pub is how I remember it 30 years ago and in my opinion should stay that way. It offers a really good menu and you won't leave hungry. The staff and manager are really pleasant and very attentive to your needs. The pricing is really reasonable and the chef is very capable of producing superb meals. When the children get bored of adult conversations they have a safe environment to play outside. All in all a great local pub that offers everything those who are looking for good food, service and a timeless environment. With thanks. The Beauchamp family

I lived in cashes green & consider this to be the best pub in the area by miles, we went along for a karaoke night once & it was ace! They've done fancy dress & the best outfit won a prize... All sorts! But the rest of the time if you want somewhere to unwind after a long week at work this is the place. Beer garden, nice & comfy inside if its raining, decent ales on tap, what more do you need? It's nice to get away from the riffraff of town pubs & the owners do a wonderful job! I look forward to my next visit next time I'm visiting!

I went here with a few friends from work not long back having heard that the food was good. Sooo glad we went! The portions were impressive and the food was cooked to perfection. It all came out on hot plates so it stayed hot and the choice you have on the menu is brilliant. Considering its pub food they still make sure you get s good choice! We were also impressed at the specials board! Cheese and potato pie and other home cooked meals that take you back to your childhood! The staff also made us feel very much appreciated and nothing was ever too much! Will definitely come here again and will be recommending it to everyone I know! :)

My 82-year-old mum took me here, having had it recommended by friends, as it is near where she lives. Despite not normally doing food on a Sunday evening (they do a superb Sunday lunch menu), they booked us in and provided a delicious vegetarian meal for the pair of us. Service could not have been better or friendlier - they really went out of their way to make our visit enjoyable. Great pub food menu on other evenings and at lunchtime, including an impressive range of veggie, not just the usual token dish, and offer a smaller portion option for OAPs and kids too, which is always welcome. We'll certainly return with the rest of the family. Fine dining it isn't, but for good, tasty pub food at a very reasonable price, this place is spot on.

Me and my boyfriend wanted to go out on Valentine's for a simple meal rather than an overpriced fancy Valentine's set menu somewhere. So we picked a local pub that we hadn't been to before. The food was reasonably priced and there was a wide choice. They also accomodated my boyfriend when he wanted to order something slightly off menu. Decent portion sizes and well presented food. Even better was the fact they had a wide range of puddings, which not all pub type places do - I had a delicious white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake! The only downsides were that the dining area was very quiet which I didn't expect on Valentine's day and also the fact they only served food until 8:30pm. The decor was also slightly dated, but other than that I would highly recommend!

I have written a review before but the Prince of Wales has now been taken over by new ownership and I am not disappointed. They have put on some fantastic little events, such as a Pub Quiz and a Halloween Night which they catered for really well by bringing out little nibbles. On one occasion I had booked a large table for a family anniversary. We had pre-booked our food but at the last minute I changed my order due to seeing something on the specials board that I fancied. The kind landlord went out of his way to organise this for me, despite the kitchen already being manic. The portions were huge and everyone enjoyed them immensely. Desserts are also delicious with a wide selection. It's so nice to go to a pub and have such kind people ensuring you are happy with your visit.

We were travelling home from a weekend away and were looking for somewhere for a late lunch, it was past 3pm, The Prince Of Wales was found on Tripadvisor and we couldn't agree more with the reviews of this pub/restaurant.When we arrived we were greeted by the owner a very friendly man who helped out with our toddler, sorting out a high chair. We then looked through the menu but as it was a Sunday it was limited to Sunday Lunch and our toddler is at that level yet :-).We asked the owner if they could accommodate and they were happy to cook anything from the normal menu. When the food arrived it looked and tasted excellent both the wife and I had a Lamb Shank and it just fell off the bone. It's worth pointing out that all meat it sourced locally.Even at the end of the meal and when we were ready to pay the owner was still friendly and we chatted about the plans for the pub.The only downside was no changing facilities for small children, but this isn't a bad enough problem to drop a star.

The Prince of Wales is a lovely pub/restaurant set in an idyllic countryside location. The views and scenery are amazing and is just outside the hustle and bustle of Stroud town centre. The Prince of Wales has a very good range of meals on their menu and a constantly varied specials board.Me and the other half had mussels in a creamy garlic sauce for starters which was cooked to perfection. Probably the best cooked mussels we've had actually.I then had the P.O.W mixed grill which again was cooked and presented fantastically. The steak was cooked just how I asked for it which seems to be becoming increasingly rare to achieve these days. O asked for medium-rare and I got medium-rare : )My partner had the lamb chops with seasoned new potatoes and minted gravy. Had a little sample of this myself and we both thought it was lovely.Aside from the food, the service was very friendly and attentive and could not of been more helpful. The Prince of Wales has been under new management for only a few months but the appear to have taken to the place very well. I wish them all the best and hope they continue to do business for a long time. Now, what do I order for my Christmas booking here?Kind regards,Tuna x

Needed a reasonably priced pub for a large family group - not easy to find in this area. But this pub was great - excellent veggie choice, fantastic value roasts, nice pub garden (not huge though) and really friendly staff. All food was excellent. Not in a particularly scenic area (suburban Stroud) but unless you want a twee Cotswold pub at an extortionate price this is great!

I can't help but return to this trusty little pub on a regular basis. The menu has a huge selection with such variety. There is also a day time light bites menu, and they have recently brought in a light bites evening menu where you are able to get 2 meals for about £9. Portion sizes are fantastic (very big), and great value for money. Also, they have a discount card which entitles you to 10% off. The Sunday menu is different with limited dishes, but instead, it is topped up with a wide range of roast dinner options with a variety of meats and veggie choices. You are able to get extras (ie yorkshire pudding with your turkey) for no extra cost. Cheaper and smaller portions are also available for senior citizens, childre, or simpley anyone with a smaller appetite, however the portion is still incredible good and will more than fill you up. The dessert menu is also huge and full of delicious options that are also very big in size. Service is great, staff are always really friendly and always go out of their way to help or alter any dish to suit your needs if possible. A lovely specials board too. Meal choices include various fish dishes, grill dishes with tons of extras, soup, chilli, cottage pie, lasagne, various curries, stuffed peppers, cauliflower cheese etc.. More than enough tasty options for veggies. Every meal I've had there has been utterly delicious and definitely worth the money. I had the most delicious roast today for just over £5- an absolute bargain!

The front of house staff were not welcoming at all and under no uncertain terms, we were told we hadn't booked. We sat in the bar area and I have to say , I think the main Manager was very moody. There was no feedback on is your meal OK, etc, or any social interaction from staff. The majority of staff looked like they did not want to be there. I do think this is a pub for regulars and because we were staying at a local hotel with different accents , were treated differently indeed. However the food was great but were very very disappointed by the Customer service provided. We would never return again as the atmosphere was very unwelcoming.

The building and setting at Leaf and Ground is beautiful. I’ve been here before but never eaten in the cafe so wasn’t sure what to expect. We pre-booked a table as we were meeting a friend with their family, making our group 9 people (4 adults and 5 kids). They did charge £5 per person as a deposit but we were glad we could book a guarantee a space for our party. Service was a little slow at points, drinks took awhile to arrive and had to grab someone’s attention to order food. However the food didn’t take too long - it was also delicious and very good quality. I had the chicken parm which was tasty, and my husband had ham, egg and chips, both were very decent sized portions. I would agree with other comments about the kids fries being salty, they were fine to my taste but the kids weren’t especially keen (they don’t normally have salt on their food) - so it might be worth taking that on board for future. We then enjoyed a walk around the grounds after lunch (the kids loved romping around the woodland area). We then had a stop at the kiosk for ice cream/milkshakes, followed by a trip to the kids play area. A very pleasant way to spend a sunny October afternoon and we will be back :)

We arrived in Stroud mid afternoon on a Saturday. The kids were starving and every other place we tried to get into was in the process of shutting. Despite Stroud being packed, Milano appeared to be the only place open that was still doing lunch or any type of food for that matter ! The lady behind the counter was super friendly and everything that we had to eat was tasty and really good value too. My youngest especially liked the Spag Bol and the proper milk shake made with ice cream. Don`t be put off by some of the reviews on here, it`s a nice place and really friendly. Just don`t go in expecting a restaurant, the clue is in the word cafe !
