Call in for a beer and snack, the place just felt tired and a bit run down. Covid protection still up all around the bar, which made it very impersonal in our view. Decided not to eat there.

This is a dog-friendly pub not far from the harbour, that does sirloin steak with chips & peas for under £15. They had sold out of the pork and the fish pie by 7pm, hence the steak. There were 3 tables eating, but it was 40 minutes before the steak arrived, by which time I'd finished my pint of Thatcher's Gold and my wife, her Stella. But we were in a hurry!

We came across this place by chance. Looking for a nice Sunday Roast we found this place and thought we would try it. As I am a coeliac I enquired if they could accommodate me and the owner was very knowledgeable and happy to help. His wife was the chef and she was able to sort everything out including a lovely gluten free Yorkshire pudding We ate in the lovely beer garden out the back and were very happy with the meal. Certainly worth a visit

Great traditional friendly pub. We both ordered Sirloin Steak and Chips and it was cooked exactly as we requested (medium rare) and was reasonably priced. Very much a locals pub but very welcoming to all. It is also very dog friendly.

Nothing was ‘homemade’, everything tasted cheap and basic. We had sausage and mash (cheap sausage and cheap Yorkshire pudding and microwave mash), burger, (cheap buns and meat) and jacket (can’t really mess a jacket up so was okay). The bar lady was lovely but if we knew the food was going to be that awful then we would of been better going to Wetherspoons! Maybe just make a bit of effort the menu and home cook some stuff and people would return?

Checked a few pubs online before traveling - Covid. Didn't think this one would be open. Turns out a nice little beer garden at the back. Table service, friendly staff and NHS track and trace all in place. Had Tim Taylors Landlord on tap, doesn't always travel well and one of my favourite beers. Excellent pint - clearly know how to look after their beers.

A few friends and I came to Ilfracombe for a little holiday, and dropped into the Prince of Wales to escape the rain, and ended up having lunch and a few drinks. We had been here last year, but we heard this time around that it is under new management with a whole new menu, so thought we’d check it out. The young lady serving was very friendly and welcoming, and made us feel very covid comfortable! All social distancing measures were in place. Masks were worn at all times, and there were multiple sanitising stations around the room, as well as QR codes on the walls for track and trace. It’s a lovely menu - and for what you get, very well priced - and I was delighted to see the broad vegetarian options, as I’m a veggie myself! Overall, we couldn’t have chosen a better spot, and can’t recommend this place enough! 5 stars from all of us!

Not a great experience. The Landlord who appeared to have been there since the beginning of time was leaving and he appeared to be more interested in how much he would get for his fixtures and fittings, rather than make the place covid secure and welcoming for customers. The place itself could be very nice, as its quite atmospheric, but the approach to track and trace - a notebook on the bar, that nobody bothered to fill in,and general lack of social distancing, especially by the locals makes the place one to avoid.

First...social distance does not apply!!locals gather in packs and are joined at their tables by the landlord. The staff are to be Frank very miserable. They dont wear masks and constantly seem to disappear outside for a chat with the locals and for a fag.Hand sanitised or washing by them is non existent.Glass had lipstick stains on it so clearly not washed properly..table by the side of us sprayed reluctantly after couple left with barmaid declaring and I quote I'm.pissed of with doing this!!..I have to say that the majority of people in Ilfracombe have no concept of this virus and social distance does not exist especially in the street. The shops are excellent..

Decent pub, went on 2 evening sat outside due to covid, it was very busy inside and what I saw the covid restriction were not really happening, locals very friendly, most staff were just ok, the landlord is a bit miserable, heard the same story both nights where he was moaning to the regulars about leaving the pub after lots of years, his language was a bit blue, and moaning that he’s been treated crap to be fair that is crap if true but it just really added to the experience listening to them all, but sadly we didn’t go again after Hubby went to the loo, and the landlord was in there having a pee, he just walked out after without washing his hands and started serving someone, Sorry but that was it for me time 2 leave.

We visit Ilfracombe every year and head straight for the Prince of Wales for a great value pub lunch. However due to the pandemic they are not serving food at the moment. We were all completely gutted. Still a great pub though. There's an old well in the centre of the pub that dates back hundreds of years. There's seating at the front and a beer garden to the rear. The pub has lots of character, just mind your head if you're tall as the ceiling in the front are low

Quaint little English pub in the heart of Ilfracombe. Firstly, mind your head on the way even in if you’re of normal height. I cracked my head on a low beam and it’s a good excuse for the locals to point and laugh at you. Also mind the ‘well’ in the middle of the bar, apparently a few people had drunkenly fallen in to it so it’s now covered with Perspex. It’s annoying for 2 reasons, the sharp stones on its brickwork will take a strip of skin off a knee or shin and the kids will just want to chuck money down it ! On to more important things, if you like fizzy lager you’re good to go. The Ale’s were circa 1970’s working mans club ! I opted for the famous doom bar ..... not the best I’ve had by any stretch. I was served by a lady who was around 83 years old and was clearly deaf and mute. She may have smiled a little, but it could have been excess wind. However my food order was efficiently noted and subsequently delivered in two rounds. Round 1 ... child’s meal, good size, well cooked, fresh ingredients. Happy child ! Round 2... 5 minutes later. Adult meals, good value pub grub, no complaints. Interestingly a few locals were having a knees up in celebration of some occasion, so our nice peaceful meal was accompanied by Sir Cliff (ahem) congratulations, happy birthday to ya, the Stones and The Who... now the last two I’m not complaining about and my nine year old wants My Generation on her playlist, so all good, but, as we were sat under the speakers at the rear of the bar I felt the landlord/ landlady might have provided us with ear defenders as an act of kindness. And yes I did hit my head on the way out too !!

Avoid if possible, I don’t think I have ever been to a pub where the staff are so disengaged and miserable. A few local drinkers sit inside near the bar and it actually feels that you are a nuisance when you get to the bar. I think it was the first time they had ever seen a British Indian family as the looks were similar to that of something alien. A real shame as the rest of the establishments are so welcoming and offer great hospitality. Understandable why it was so empty , especially when either side bars were busy. Definitely one to avoid and lots of work to do .

It has something for everyone, quiet at times, busy and lively at other times. To say that the food was bad would be giving this restaurant high lights of being good. Appalling cuisine would be a more appropriate word. hygiene if restaurant would be a visit from the health department. Food well below standard and probably served to the gallows if the 1700 the Prince of Wales would have lifted his kilt and ran as fast as he could out if the door. And without eating there the consumption of food was tinned cans of food on a mesh of brown colored inedible food. The standard was very poor. And it seemed that the owner was unaware of the concept of basic food.

It probably attains what it sets out to do, but should really aim higher. What they have on offer is adequate but they suffer through the locals cursing and shouting with no attempt to control them. We visited here twice whilst on holiday in Ilfracombe. It was one of the few places we could find that was open for a late lunch. It is a proper traditional boozer. It dates back over 700 years and has an old well in the middle. The menu options are pretty much what you'd expect in a pub. Scampi, burger, baguettes and baked potatoes etc. I had the scampi on one visit and a burger on another and both were very good. My daughter had a baked potato which she polished off.The portions are good, the food fresh and reasonably priced. There also have TVs for the sport if that's what your after. But the barmaid didn't give us our change or confirm the price, as she was too busy talking to friends in the corner and totally ignored us the whole visit. We decided not to distract the girl and just ate up and left for Wetherspoons friendly and attentive staff where you get your change. The Prince of Wales is just the amazing experience, with it comes real character with its low ceilings and its 16th century architecture, making it the real Devon pub experience. We ordered food also, and were shocked at the prices which must be some of the cheapest I have come across, but don't be put off by this, as the price doesn't reflect the quality. We visited this establishment on two occasions to ensure we had not caught the landlord on a bad day, our first visit we decided to eat and try for local produce, The landlord was about as inspiring and happy as someone just been stung by a nest of bees! not happy with questions about local produce, not a smile in sight, we felt as if we were imposing on the chaps time, we settled for scampi "ex frozen" and was indeed surprised there was nothing local "given they land fish 30 yards away" but anyway it was scampi and chips no frills or anything else, but I could not shake off the feeling of being an inconvenience to the landlord who was just not interested and there was very few people in on our first visit 21st March 2016, around 8pm, we decided to give it another whirl just to ensure it was not us, so we visited again wednesday 23rd around 1.pm sadly the landlord was the same! not interested monosyllable answers and about as welcoming and friendly as a wasps nest in your living room! but he did say he was not happy with wetherspoons opening the other side of town! I asked if he could change a very cloudy cask ale which was done reluctantly and that again was cloudy! I did say (rightly or wrongly) that the lines need a clean and not with water which went down like a lead balloon. so we left! and left the beer. a sad experience to report, I really dislike having to review somewhere in a negative light but I sincerely hope the landlord at least pretends to bother about his custom and if taking on wetherspoons is such a ordeal I guess after 23 years it's time to hang up your hat at such a weak challenge.

If you are a real pub person, and don't want all the frills that trendy pubs are pushing, (which comes with a price) this is the stop gap you for you. The best rump steak I have tasted in a long time. I have paid double for the same meal. 8oz rump steak, chips and salad just £8.95, and a 6oz rump steak and salad bap £5.95. The steak bap made me ask the question, "Why would you eat a beef burger ever again when steak tastes this good?".

Our food was delivered quickly and it was flawless, their special pie and chips and peas with gravy was under £6. When we visited they had a games night with pub bowls, the place was packed. There's a big screen to watch the sport and another screen showing the News near the door. My husband enjoyed the pumps beer. This a lovely Devon tavern with character and a lovely staff and clientèle to beat Wetherspoons hands down. Mind your head, the loos are clean, and give it a whirl. Website?Maximum points and thanks. Very highly recommended. Park at the Ropery car park nearby and go to the bottom of Fore St near the Quay (head towards the sea). Buses run in the evening from the same car park so have a night out from boring Barnstaple. If you're at a loose end I suppose you could spend time in there on their free internet with a coffee and a light lunch from noon? There is no nosey sign up "Cloud" like Wetherspoons do.

We both had the steak pie. It came with a mountain of chips. I don't like restaurants that give you loads of chips but a small piece of meat or fish, because potatoes are cheap. But although the pie didn't match the chips in generosity, it was tasty and the meat was good quality. The plate also had loads of peas and gravy. If we'd paid ten quid or more for it, maybe you could have been a little disappointed, but you can't knock the value, because it was only £6! We had a decent bottle of house wine with it for only £11. You don't get the service and ambiance you'd get in a top restaurant, but it suited us that night because we were tired and didn't want to try a more expensive restaurant if we were tired.

This is a nice quiet pub, we stayed for a pint of cider and dinner, the meal was nice enough but needed to be heated up a bit more. They have sport playing as well. If you are a non-smoker do not sit near the door as they stand in the door way smoking which is not good.

Bog standard pub food, though they did ask how we wanted the steak and it was done that way. Not much choice and not much offence

We were recommended this pub by our hotel owner on a wet Friday night and it was brilliant. Great atmosphere good food family friendly and sky sports. We also went back on the Saturday lunch time and discovered they have a lovely beer garden out the back

Visited twice during the weekend and on the first visit was welcomed by a French lady who was very welcoming and totally customer focussed. highly recommended for a lunch with great selection of baguettes at reasonable prices. returned again during the weekend and the owner, a bearded gentleman...not so friendly, but a traditional pub with good lunch time food!

This pub serves good, fresh food at reasonable prices. If the weather is good and you can sit in the beer garden, make sure to use Sun cream, it's a real Sun trap! Indoor seating is available and the old well is preserved in the middle of the bar! A real old fashioned pub with lovely staff, good food, fine beer and the all important WiFi for the teens, always welcoming!

On a weekend away in Ilfracombe with mates , as in previous years we try to find the "locals pubs". The Prince of Wales is one that we have used before , its a good old fashioned pub , friendly , reasonable prices with a really good atmosphere. We were in there on Saturday 6th June for a couple of pints and ended up staying all evening. They had a really good acoustic band on , Such and Vincent. The pub was packed but we were made to feel like we were locals, everyone spoke to everyone . You just have to mind your head .....

Fabulous food, exactly as we ordered. Steak pie was a big hit, chef not frightened of a good rare steak either! We ate here 5 out of 7 nights and not one complaint from 9 of us! Great little pub, mind your head!

The title says it all really. Service was a bit of a challenge, not awfully accommodating. Setting not great in my opinion, loud music not right for sitting and eating even in a pub. Food was good, really generous plates and incredibly well priced.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Sadly its not always as busy as the other pubs on the main road, but well worth a visit. Drinks are reasonably priced too.

Stopped in with a couple of friends and I have to say the whole visit was laughable. After 2 attempts for a latte we were informed they couldn't make one so we had a black coffee with milk on the side, what they gave was out of date UHT milk. Heaven knows how long they had this. The G&T they offered was with flat tonic and quite frankly no care at all. To top it off they couldn't even give me a reciept, they just wrote on a piece of paper how much was spent and signed it. Quite glad we decided not to order food.

Very low ceiling, I can only imagine what some heads look like in the morning after downing a few drinks! Staff were friendly enough. The food was very disappointing. Although it all came well presented, the steak was like rubber, the chicken also. The frozen chips though ( to our surprise) were actually nice and crisp, wish we had just purchased those instead. The coleslaw had an awful taste to it.We are not food snobs, we love traditional grub, but this pub didn't meet our expectations upon reading the reviews.

Exellent. Proper food and great staff in a town that appears to be falling to Chinese restaurants and greedy developers. Make the most of this traditional Tavern with lovely staff who actually talk to their customers and pull real ales. So, not a Wetherspoons with fake food and beers. You can eat a big meal at the Prince of Wales for six pounds, a coffee will cost you £1.50 ! I am so hard to please but can find no fault here.Mind your head on the beams but don't complain about this old unique Pub on Fore Street. Grockles will of course gravitate to what they know best and pay less. Heaven knows why visitors rarely use real Devon Pubs. Worth a visit just for the lovely food and attractive staff alone. Think on all you boys.Get in to the genuine local Pubs now. In two years time the developers will have closed the Hotels for Flats, and Ilfracombe will be full of luvvy foodies and silly prices. Totally against local wishes I might add.

I stumbled on this place by sheer luck. I was taking a photo of a nearby pub which looked very attractive but was not serving food at the time we arrived, then decided to eat here instead, thinking it would be bog standard, but looks were deceiving.I had a very nice steak with pepper sauce (peas and fries) and everything was completely satisfactory despite a worrying one-liner on the menu which suggested diners should not deviate from the menu, and we were just a few minutes behind a table of 7 Dutch men, however we didn't have to wait too long and all was fresh and good qualityI have to say that I also enjoyed the real ale there (Doombar) and would certainly come back for more (food as well)

We didn't eat here but did see a number of people who did. We concentrated on the drinking aspect and were totally satisfied on their choices of real ale plus other drinks !!The only reason we didn't eat here was their love of dogs. Most pubs in Ilfracombe are dog lovers and I'm afraid I can't eat where dogs are licking their parts 6ft from where I'm eating. Many folk are ok with it, my friends and I prefer not to.There is limited seating outside and if you don't mind a bit of cigarette smoke, pull up a chair and engage in a bit of people watching. We drank here most evenings and enjoyed the company and mixing with some of the locals who were interested in what you had to say. They were also keen to advise you on where to eat, drink, and be merry !!

With the young children. The served a lot of beers and ales. Wel you don't go to many pubs and find them to have a wishing well

We always visit this pub whilst in Ilfracombe. It never fails to please. Once again whilst on a weekend break to visit family, we headed for the Prince, and it never fails to please. We had a meal, which was tasty and very reasonable. There was live music on and the Landlord Brian provided free curry & rice for all. The pub was busy, but despite this, service with both drinks & food was efficent and friendly. The Prince is a must when visiting this pretty location

It is a bit better; a new screen appeared in the Bar and the outside tables look a bit better. Other than that, no change. The "Prince" is another quiet pub with no music, no bands and no entertainment when we pass or go in.. But it's cozy and friendly, the girls are welcoming and the place has a nice feel with a classic menu. The chefs seem good, and their food is good. There's just no life in the place whenever we visit. No character, no fun and never any parties during the weekend? No charity dinners, no charity fundraisers, no staff parties ? You Combe Pubs haven't risen to Wetherspoons challenge, and sadly, we have to understand that none of you will. Ever so sorry guys but it doesn't get better than three stars. But, you Combe Pubs know best, don't you.

Great pub and restaurant unfortunately not serving Sunday lunch. Restaurant section was closed on our visit. The excellent food and facilities are way ahead of the floor staff and table service. On our visit, the bar was excessively noisy with rowdy locals.

Had a really super meal last Sunday. We were here on holiday but if local would come back every week! Nice children’s playground outside, crayons and colouring packs. Our dog was welcome and blankets provided for them to sit on. We had a carvery and it was one do the best I’ve been too. Really lovely variety of vegetables done well. Beautiful meats and very generous serving. Pavlo the chef I think it was and Michelle made us feel welcome and they were so friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

This pub is a gem, on a five day holiday we found ourselves here on varying occasions; with the kids, without the kids, just drinks and main evening meal and it came up trumps every time. All the staff we met were friendly and professional, the food was tasty, well priced and looked great, and the overall atmosphere is brilliant. We cannot recommend this pub highly enough.
