Prime Cafe Bar in Plymouth

Totally heartbroken that these guys had to close, not only the food, atmosphere and service were probably the best in Plymouth but it was a truly special place judging by international standards! Will always remember the place and selfishly hope they open something in the future. Take care guys!

Great vegan options and lovely staff

Great food and drinks at average prices. I don’t know how they make any money as it was full of students with empty drinks occupying all the tables for hours. We were the only table to actually order food and leave when finished.

Unbeatable! Cool, friendly, and the staff are truly awesome. Oh, and the coffee and food are great too! These days, it can get a little busy at lunchtime; so it's wise to call and book a table - just to be sure.

Good place for coffee and light bites. Central but just off the main shopping mall and away from shoppers. The decor is casual but looking tired. The single unisex toilet let it down. Like so many cafes, no attempt to keep it spotless or well decorated is evident.

Awful service, average food and overpriced. I came in for lunch with a friend on our lunch breaks, it wasn't busy and we'd had lovely lunches here previously. We ordered just before 12:10, but by 12:45 we still hadn't had any food arrive. I noticed a table that came in after us had already recieved their food and we had 15 mins of our lunch break left so I had to go to the bar and ask for an update on our food. Without saying a single word the server walked away to the kitchen and then came back with "it's just coming now", no apology or explanation and they couldn't have looked more uninterested if they tried. The food when it arrived was barely warm so it had clearly been sat and forgotten about, the portion was small and not worth the £11 a portion.

Food taste is a let down, but great atmosphere

Food was just bad, coffee also not good. Not many options for brunch either..not good experience sorry. People were friendly, atmosphere was nice but nothing I ate or drunk was to my liking, too spicy, no white bread option, brown one didn't taste good etc etc ..latte too milky and almost no coffee flavor. :(

I hate waking up early for breakfast, but when Prime is involved, I am up and ready to go. They have great variety on their menu, offering multiple options from varied diets. but I recommend either the granola or the loaded Porridge! (The jam will blow your mind) Definitely pop down to prime, you won't regret it. (Everyone we have referred to has had the same experience and loved every minute being there)

Came here for a quick coffee with my partner. The order was taken and then the girl who took the order disappeared to vape outside! I did think someone else was likely to be dealing with it. I was wrong! 20 minutes later our coffees arrived. We came back the following day on a Sunday when it was not so busy and this time we bought our daughter. It was really not busy at all so thought we would be ok. I went to order and the girl was like can you give me 5 minutes I am just doing something. She was adding something up so I didn’t mind. Went to the toilet came back and was still waiting…. Eventually I got served and went to pay to find that it didn’t go through as the girl was still texting on her phone. Once I was served we again sat for around 10 minutes when my daughters hot chocolate came out but our coffees were nowhere to be seen. Another 5 minutes they arrived. Not sure why the service is so dreadful it isn’t busy! Just be a little bit more aware of customers. You don’t start laying tables up before serving someone their drinks or go outside vaping when you’re meant to be preparing a order

Food took a long, lonngggg time to arrive and had a big chunk of inedible onion root in it. Really wouldn't return.

I enjoyed the casual experience. Not so much the feet on the lovely settees. Food unusual and tasty.

My favorite coffee place in Plymouth. Great coffee and great lunch selection. Many tasty and healthy options, both sweet and savoury. They have had just the right thing I was looking on the menu every time so far. Good portion sizes and good value for money, in my opinion. The seating options are good, there's table that are great for getting a little work done and tables that are great for relaxing. Friendly staff too! I don't think I could want much more from a coffee shop.

I absolutely love this cafe, there is plenty of vegan and veggie options. The herbal teas are very good too- very fresh. Such lovely, healthy, tasty food. The wait staff are delightful and very knowledgeable when it comes to their products. Can't wait to come again :)

Lovely drinks a little pricey but worth it for the atmosphere. When it is busy there is nowhere to sit with limited tables anyway. Good to just pop in if you see it is not busy.

I found Prime Cafe Bar really pleasant I tried something I've never eaten before and enjoyed it very much. The staff helped with explanations to begin with and as we had already had avocado for breakfast the shakshuka was the dish for us. Very very tasty enjoyed it much more than I anticipated. The place has lovely decor and we parked on the road outside easily enough. Prime was busy lots of laptops being used dogs were very welcomed from what we see. Overall lovely experience would return but this time having not eaten breakfast first.

'Too cool' for good service... It's Saturday, I get it. Its busy, I get it but to be completely ignored by the staff who are working is not on. Went in at 12.50 to see a busy cafe. There was one table free but it had a reserved sign on it for 12.30... We then proceeded to stand there like lemons whilst the staff saw us but casually walked past us on multiple occasions without acknowledgement. My partner finally managed to get one of the staffs attention who seemed genuinely surprised to have someone ask her something. Asked if we could sit at the table as it was way past the time. 'urm no I don't think so, I think they're still coming.' she then proceed to look at the rest of the tables that were full and not say much else... We'll leave it thanks. We really like the food here and the place is a great location for us but the service is predictably poor and today topped it off. Sorry

Really disappointed guys, waited for 40 minutes for our order to come out of the kitchen, only to find that it had not been received by the kitchen. It was not busy, no one else was eating and we were sitting right in front of the counter. It would not have taken much to observe that our drinks were finished and that we may be waiting for some food. We got our money back for the food (not even the drinks were comped). Could really do better on the service and attention to your customers. The food is always good but left hungry and cold

I popped in for an open avo sandwich and a oatmilk cuppacino. The cafe was busy but not loud. The lady who served me was helpful and efficient and I felt comfortable on my own. I recommend Prime cafe. I will be back. They have a large selection, also many veg and vegan options.

My favourite place to be. Always such a warm and smiley welcome, a host of drinks, food and treats to choose from. A little sanctuary I use to chill and do some artwork. Please check out this wonderful place, you won't regret it

On a pris un bon petit-déjeuner copieux. Le cadre est agréable et le service correct. Un peu bruyant tout de même mais assez convivial. Les prix sont plutôt corrects. Il semble être attractif pour les jeunes et les moins jeunes

We've been meaning to have breakfast here for ages, stopped by today and we weren't disappointed. My friends loaded porridge looked amazing and I had the most delicious smashed avocado. We will be back again soon 😋

Great independent coffee and lunch place

We’ve been coming here for years. Very good coffee. Rather eclectic food.

The coffee was fantastic, breakfast was well made, well presented. The focus is definitely vegan/vegetarian and I can definitely appreciate it despite not being my niche. Did help shift the hangover.

I've eaten here plenty of times, most recently I had the peanut butter and banana on sourdough and it was delightful. A great Americano and flat white. One for the coffee nerds for sure! Great for getting work done, taking meetings or catching up with a friend.

Great place to eat and drink coffee

Prime cafe is one of the best coffee shops in Plymouth. Their coffee is always very good, and the menu includes dishes that go beyond the standard boring items that every other cafe in Plymouth seem to offer.

This is a PRIME location for an amazing vegan and veggie experience. They made a right "hash" of my breakfast (wonderful spiced sweet potato, black bean and kale hash with side salad)... I'll deffo be coming back here. Dog-friendly, sanitary products in the bathroom for folk who need em, nice decor, lovely staff, what a spot on place. Would absolutely recommend. Edit: i literally went back two days in a row after legit thinking of moving to Plymouth from Rotherham for this amazing lil café. Anti-capitalist propaganda on the wall?? Am in LOVE.

Over from New Zealand, stopped briefly in Plymouth (enroute to another destination) to get something, and wandering past Prime Cafe Bar. Didn't intend on stopping, but then thought, need coffee... so pleased we did [stop]; this place is amazing relaxed and popular, the food is simply, fresh, tasty and well presented - they can put pesto, tomatoes and micro-greens, or smashed avo, bacon and micro-greens, on a plate with olive oil, balsamic etc. in a way that could put some MICHELIN-starred chefs to shame. And they can make coffee as well! Honestly didn't expect this in Plymouth. You guys are kickin' it! Please move to New Zealand, around the corner from home :-)

I fancied treating myself to breakfast out so visited Prime café. When I arrived I ordered a coffee and a cold drink. I also ordered avocado on toast with poached eggs. I was sat in the cafe for about 20mins and I noticed that a group of three people, who had arrived after me, received their food order before me. I asked at the bar how long my order was going to be so a staff member spoke to the kitchen. The staff member apologised and said that my order ‘hadn’t printed out’ even though this didn’t impact on subsequent orders? They offered me a free drink (I already had two drinks so didn’t want another) so I waited and within 10minutes my avocado and poached eggs on toast arrived. The food was nice but as I was coming to the last few bites of eating my food.. I found a piece of black plastic in my food. I spoke to the same member of staff who apologised and offered me a free piece of cake. I said no to this because I didn’t want to eat anything else. So I thought they would take something off of the bill as a good will gesture instead but nope! They still charged my full price. I appreciate they offered a free drink and a piece of cake but I already had two drinks and when you find plastic on your food.. surprisingly you don’t want to eat more food! I didn’t expect to pay nothing but they didn’t even offer to knock one of the drinks off the bill instead. Very disappointed and I feel it was poor form. Will not be going to Prime Café again for this reason.

I love this place so much, the food is always delicious and the prices are very reasonable. I had a banana and peanut butter vegan cake which is hands down the nicest thing I think I’ve ever eaten. Will be back soon

Delicious food and drink with a lovely style all around

food is incredible but service is absolutely disgusting. I've visited here many times and each time I've had to wait 20 minutes minimum before even getting my order taken, on slow days I've ordered toast and it's taken almost an hour - for toast!! I've seen many people arrive after me, be served, eat and leave before I've gotten my food.

I kept getting told about how nice to have breakfast was at this place, I finally got there and had the most splendid smashed avocado on soda bread toast with pine nuts and rocket salad with balsamic dressing. It was better than that place in Australia that I used to get it from, it is literally the best place in the world to get an avocado breakfast. For me in scored 5 out of 5 1. Great coffee 2. Amazing food and coffee just seemed a bit of a let down when it come to customer service. One of the members of staff was very rude and almost annoyed that she was in the job or dealing with customers. The place had a good vibe although it seemed to be based mainly on regulars and going in for the first time things were not explained properly I.e QR code menus etc. This place also books tables and does get busy so it would be best to book.

Quirky cafe, pleasant staff and nice food

I have been a regular at prime for a couple years now and always found it a lovely place to have good food and atmosphere. In the last 6 months there has clearly been some change around of staff and different faces which don’t seem to have particularly great attitudes or attention. The last couple times I have been in the last few months it has been majorly declining. The service is slow, a lot of just being left at the door, staff coming across lack lustre, some very moody and just trying to get you in and out of the door just making the money. As it’s always been a place I loved and working in the hospitality industry myself for over 10 years I am more than aware that we are all human and can have bad days! So went in today with a hopefully positivity of the prime we love! We were left at the door for a period of time, the staff seemed to be chatting with people they clearly knew personally but in the end I asked if i could sit at a table i could clearly see was free and was told we could. The table we sat was incredibly sticky and still dirty after a terrible wipe down. We ordered a large Latte with an extra shot and a cup of tea with some water also. The latte came in a pint glass which I have never seen before so obviously was difficult to drink as a hot beverage with no handle and didn’t have the extra shot I asked and was charged for. For lunch we ordered - Cornish smoked mackerel sourdough toast and Lahmacun Turkish Pizza Aubergine on flatbread topped with feta, tahini dressing and a herby tomato onion and cucumber salad. When the food came out, it’s wasn’t a high quality as usual, it was cold, the bread base for the pizza was extremely dry and brittle but that wasn’t the biggest problem. My Mums meal (Turkish pizza) was completely covered in sultanas which was not stated on the menu description and was little confused why they where on the dish. My Mum cannot eat sultanas due medical reasons and soon as we saw them, not even touching the meal or eating any of it, I got the attention of one of the staff and explained that she couldn’t eat them and wasn’t at any point stated on the menu that they would be in the meal. The staff member at first tried to tell us it was olives, which it clearly wasn’t, and proceeded to take it back to the kitchen after arguing this. The staff member came back and asked if we would like the meal re done without the sultanas on it, but due the ordeal and quality of the dish it’s self we were completely put off and asked for something different. It was replaced with a mushrooms on toast, again being cold and not a great quality but both just hungry at the point. After all of this, when it came to paying for the meal there was some serious discrepancies. We were told that we would be charged for the Turkish Pizza on top of our meal with a discount of 40% off the dish, to cover the cost of it being made. Now working in a restaurant myself I know this not how it would work if you serve the customer something that was not stated on the menu and wasn’t edible due to medical reasons. Not only that, we was also told we should of stated the allergen before, which i can agree with if it was even stated on the menu, which it wasn’t. especially something that would be in the dish so prominently. It was a mistake on the kitchens part and i feel the front house staff let it down even further with the attitude of just blaming the customer. We will not be coming back to Prime Cafe anymore as collectively all of these things have just disappointed us and not what we know and love Prime and have fine for years.

We loved this cafe. It has a very laid-back atmosphere, the staff are really friendly and the food is delicious.

Love the eclectic look of this coffee shop/restaurant. The large decaf cappuccino was excellent and the toasted teacake beautifully presented. The food on the menu looked delicious. Definitely planning a return trip.

Such a great wee cafe to sit and read, chat with friends or look out the window. The grilled sourdough sandwich I had was really tasty and filled me up. All the staff were very kind and attentive. My food and drink only came to £7.20

Wow ! Have been here half a dozen times while my daughter has been at uni and every time the breakfasts have been great, but today it was even better !! The mixed mushrooms are straight from heaven 😛 A "must visit" if you need a great quality breakfast .
