My mum and I went with my 2yr old daughter in March 2023 as a Mother’s Day treat. The first time we have done something like this, I choice Pretty Things for afternoon tea as I had heard great things about it and wanted mum and I to have a treat. My 2yr old daughter is under medical review for autism and because of her autism she is very picky with food, I bought bread and ham from home for her to eat (no branding visible, anyone else could have seen and assumed we have purchased the food from this establishment) and the manager/owner came over to us, stood over us and was confrontational in her tone of voice when telling me that outside food was not allowed. She was not kind or understanding in her approach, she did not seek to find out why I had separate food for my daughter, I tried to explain but she was not interested and kept reiterating that outside food was not allowed. In the end I order ham for my daughter, which my daughter did not eat because she is used to eating thinly sliced ham and this ham was thick sliced. I was reduced to tears from how confrontational and unkind this manager was and embarrassed for how she had spoken to me in front of other customers. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone who has children with additional needs and picky eaters. And to think we were treated like this when we had paid £60 for 2 afternoon teas!! Absolutely disgusting behaviour AND we did not get out £10 deposit back. Terrible experience, no point of having a such a pretty place if your staff are not able to have an element of empathy and or kindness to ensure customers have a nice experience. All the manager needed to do was to show me the courtesy or crouching down to my level, the dignity of not speaking over me and with a raised voice and to show some understanding with a gentle approach…it doesn’t take much to be kind.

One of my close friends couldn't make my hen weekend so want to treat me to an afternoon tea. This was my first visit to Pretty Things and it was brilliant. The quality of the food was amazing, plenty of fillings in the sandwiches and tea topped up frequently. The staff very attentive. The venue is appropriately named, it was so pretty inside and out. I will definitely return! If you are thinking about it...book it!

I never left a review but felt I needed to on this occasion….Came today for my daughter’s birthday. Not very welcoming on arrival when my other daughter came with her 2 children in a double pram- was told no room for her pram and it would need to be stored in the courtyard! Outside, which got rained on and were told they had cctv camera so should be safe, not very helpful or forthcoming with help getting a toddler and baby upstairs but was told I didn’t state “mobility “ issues… 2 children are not classed as mobility issues in my eyes!!! We asked to share an afternoon tea but was charged £29.95 each for a sandwich 1 scone and 2 small treats! We didn’t even get a plate to eat it on and had to find the 1 waitress to top up our tea- definitely not worth the 10% added onto the bill! All looked very pretty- more of a case of style over substance- definitely not worth £60 for what we got- see picture attached that tray was £60! Was extremely shocked … please don’t waste your money not value for money. Very disappointed if we had know we were paying that we would have gone elsewhere … surely you can’t think that is acceptable for the price?????

I have a baby shower in this place today and I’m actually very disappointed as I pay £34 it was for a person and we didn’t even have a sandwich each the tea was very weak it was water the coffee was even worse it was watery and didn’t test the coffee ready it was not even a scone age you have to share skin between two people it was a few cakes very few and water from the tap and nudges at all if you want to have juice you need to buy extra if you wanna have a proper coffee you’ll have to pay extra and I did ask for a tuna sandwich because I didn’t like any of the sandwich and the manager come over to the table and said if you wouldn’t have if you would like a sandwich as like a tuna sandwich you need to pay extra. After all of that I need to go home and eat because I’m hungry and I spend £34 plus if you go to this place you have to pay for the car park and have to spend £34 go home eat because you’re hungry it’s really upsetting didn’t like didn’t definitely definitely I don’t recommend this place it’s really disappointed don’t waste your money there.

I have just popped in to the shop with my Mum for lunch. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food is so well presented and such value for money. On another occasion I took a friend for a surprise afternoon tea, the choice of sandwiches and cakes was totally amazing. A perfect little place for all occasions, it is a little gem of a shop.

I want to say that the owner/manager was not very happy. She is one of the people who comes late and needs to get a grip. Other than that all of the staff are so very nice. Any of them could be the manager. All those tips should be spread around fairly. I hope they do. This one staff member was so very pleasant I forgot her name but she was so very lovely. I recommend this cafe the only big thing is the manager to get a grip and work a lot harder.

I have been to Pretty Things on two occasions, both special events with family and friends. Unfortunately both have been underwhelming and far below the standard expected, with very slow service (slower than excused by preparing food fresh). For privacy I don't want to go into detail on this review however, I was extremely disappointed that following a traumatic incident whilst visiting the venue the owner didn't even bother to follow up with a care call. Having read some of the other reviews mentioning the customer experience and service received I felt compelled to share our experience. I'm a great advocate for independent, locally run businesses and will quite happily pay for a good experience and quality food, this is not what you get at Pretty Things. If the ownership prioritised and invested as much time in their customers as the window displays I believe they'd be a lot more successful. We'll stick to South Lodge in the future.

I’m not one to usually write reviews but I left here today feeling extremely unsatisfied. The lady who I assume is the manager was nothing but rude, the minute we walked in she was on the phone, looked at me and said we need that table back in an hour- not even a hello. For a small area there wasn’t much space for my double pushchair which was clearly in the way as I was told several times they needed to get to a draw, Instead they just proceeded to lean over with my baby asleep in the buggy. The windows have lovely drawings on which for a 2 year old are very attractive to want to look at- the manager again proceeded to ask me to keep my son away, he only wanted to look and was well behaved the whole time we were there. My friend and I had been looking forward to meeting here and we felt rushed to get out. The minute my plate was taken the bill was brought over! For a place with such great reviews in the heart of our town I am saddened by our experience.

Such an adorable, quaint little place! The staff go above and beyond to help you while visiting, one of the members of staff went through all of the variety’s of tea that they have and explained in detail what was Welsh rarebit! Delicious by the way… two of my party had the afternoon tea and wasn’t it beautiful and very filling, they were rolling out by the end. I could not recommend this place enough for food, teas and a little shopping as there is the most perfect gifts for sale dotted around this stunning little place. It’s a must go!!!!!

Absolutely nowhere on the menu does it state that the price for afternoon tea is PER PERSON. All it states is a ‘selection of sandwiches, scones, nibbles, cake, refillable tea or coffee’ which at £30 leads people to believe that is more than adequate to share with someone. My friend and I are we’re under the illusion we were ordering afternoon tea to share for £30 and had I been made aware at any point by the menu or a member of staff that that price was for 1 person I would have walked out! I was charged £60 for what is in the picture below. How do you sleep at night?! I have never been so godsmacked in my entire life. £60?! And not only that, the food wasn’t of great quality the bread was cheap and stodgy and the member of staff working in the kitchen verbally displayed her displeasure when she was informed she had ‘another’ afternoon tea to make. I will never return and I will make sure I spread the word to friends and family they will have to take out a loan if they wish to visit your cafe! You should be ashamed for being so greedy!

All this accompanied by a wonderful cheeseboard with all the trimmings. If you're looking for a gin experience that is different from the usual pub/bar environment, this is beautiful. We finally decided to visit with some trepidation, as the bad reviews paint quite a picture; but the lure of indulgent treats finally won me over!I decided to book a table by phone (so as to avoid the issues faced by some reviewers who had walked in) and the lady who took my reservation was really polite - a good start! The politeness continued in person and we were pleased to find we had been seated with a whole floor to ourselves! The tables are laid nicely and there are lots of items for sale to interest you whilst you wait. The cake display is a sight to behold - making a selection was quite a task! In the end I decided on the retro rainbow cake (I forget its official title!) which was light, moist and delicious - think back to how birthday cakes used to taste when you were a child! I teamed this with a freakshake - which was as though someone had emptied a party bag from the 1980s out onto a saucer - and was a piece of art in its own right! (see photo!) My only minor criticism here was that I don't think the malt balls were real Maltesers and the marshmallows tasted more citrusy - flumps would be the better choice!! Overall however, the drinks menu is exciting and beautifully designed. The only reason this is a four star review and not five is due to the service charge and pricing; no one wants a service charge added on for them. I'd certainly prefer to choose the value of my tip and leave it discretely in a tip box. Pretty Things prices itself out of being a regular haunt for coffee and cake and so becomes a venue strictly for special occasions - expect an indulgent treat rather than a standard coffee and you won't be disappointed!

Very, very disappointing.Having entered on a wet afternoon for a cup of tea, a hot chocolate with a bun and sausage roll to share, we sat down and waited for a menu and to be served, (I asked for one in the end). Then we eventually had our order taken after ten minutes or so. The cake and drinks arrived after another considerable wait; my husband almost walked out. The roll was nowhere to be seen. When I asked "I am sorry but have you forgotten our sausage roll please?" I was told "No it'll take a while but you're behind this group and we're short staffed". There was no apology and no explanation when the drinks had come out, and who needs cake before savoury and cold tea by the time it arrived? I did say it doesn't take long to microwave one sausage roll and was told they didn't microwave things, (I could have sworn there was a microwave behind the counter)Disappointing and rude.... and with long hair like that the older lady should have had it tied back when serving food.I had enthused about the tea shop to my husband as my daughter likes it so much... I shan't bother to go again.

We enjoyed afternoon tea at Pretty Things today and we were so impressed! I just had to write a review after reading some of the less complimentary reviews because they definitely don’t reflect the experience that we enjoyed. I’ve been to Pretty Things on a number of occasions and have always had a really enjoyable time. Firstly, we felt the price for afternoon tea was very fair given the quality and quantity of food. Pretty Things is unique and quirky for all of the right reasons and everything is home-made, beautifully presented and utterly delicious. The sandwiches and scones were fresh and very tasty. It’s lovely to be able to look at all the delicious cakes on the cake table before choosing what you’d like (not an easy task as everything looks so yummy!). After enjoying our sandwiches, scones and the little savoury and sweet treats, we were so full we had to take our slices of cake home with us. The staff were all really lovely, knowledgable and very attentive. The tea room itself is always so beautifully decorated. Pretty Things also had a 50% off sale on some of their beautiful items so we were able to pick up a couple of bargains at the end. We’re holding my baby shower here at the beginning of next year and, after today’s visit, we couldn’t be happier with our decision to hold it here.

I hadn’t been here for ages but it was my birthday so I thought it would be a lovely place to celebrate. With two other guests we had a large slice of cake and two large BLTs. Great flavours and presentation. Whilst my party had coffee I had a pot of tea which was, again, generously sized. It was a lovely venue with friendly staff to enjoy our lunch.

My daughter and I had a lovely lunch at Pretty Things. Fabulous hot chocolate, lovely smashed avocado on toast, coronation chicken sandwich with salad and crisps, and a piggy roll which was also delicious. The decor is quirky and cute and the staff were friendly.

I absolutely love this little cafe (tea room?). It's really hard to find places in town that aren't a chain, and when you do get a good one you must hold onto it for dear life! I've been here twice so far and intend to return again... I felt a little bit bad because my baby was crying on both occasions BUT the staff were really lovely and friendly, and really looked after us. The freakshakes are incredible and I love the range of food available. It's so cosy and pretty inside.

My wife and I went here as a starter to celebrating our 10th Wedding anniversary. Just a quick light bite before heading onto other celebrations.

Having double and triple checked both on Pretty Things website and looking through responses on Facebook and here (see screenshots below) that kids parties were offered at this tea shop, I took my son in to book a birthday afternoon tea. Nothing fancy, just afternoon tea with freakshakes for 6 children aged 10. Gender of party goers *should* be irrelevant.

After wanting to visit this place for a long while, I became cautious of what to expect considering some of the negative reviews. I must say after my experience i would urge you to IGNORE NEGATIVE REVIEWS.

Don’t be fooled by the outside. It’s certainly is a pretty looking cafe, but I can’t say the same for the owner/managers attitude.

So today was my daughters 6th birthday we reserved a table 3 adults 2 girls age 6 my little girl was so excited it was her birthday not one staff member said happy birthday the children’s meal came out on two plates we changed for two sausage rolls so we thought ok they may put the other things in the basket course NOT they didn’t get the kids meal baskets( we were told that with attitude by the owner / manager )they then got a Tiny bowl of crisp to share and then two tiny bowls of dry fruiit .!! Not one thing to make it exciting for girls they then were able to get a cupcake or slice of cake we had to ask as we were leaving for them they didn’t have cupcakes they has a tiny selection of cakes not really for kids G&t; cake , coffee and walnuts , then one slice of chocolate that was the only option for the girls so because there was one slice the other abrupt other lady that worked I would say in the kitchen cut it in half AWFUL no happy birthday just given in a doggy bag .!!!

We booked a table for two which was waiting for us all set up upstairs. As it was half term and very busy we asked if they minded moving us downstairs which was a lot quieter. This was done without a fuss where we were well looked after during our delicious Afternoon Tea we had pre booked . From the quaint decor to the authentic crockery and delicious food we were highly impressed with our visit and would definitely recommend this lovely tea room as a great place to spoil yourselves . We chatted with the owner who was very pleasant and attentive throughout our visit despite being busy . We had the egg mayonnaise and smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches on freshly baked brown bread , crisps and salad garnish. Scones, clotted cream jam and loose leaf English Breakfast Tea which was topped up on request. Delicate macaroons and fresh fruit topped the cake stand and when you were ready a slice of cake from the counter , we had carrot cake and Tiffan which we took home as we were too full . The staff were only too happy to wrap them up for us. The price with service charge for two was £48.20 which is standard for afternoon tea but was definitely worth every penny .

Having seen various posts on fb we were looking forward to visiting with my 9 year along with my adult friends one of which it was her birthday.I had tried to research the full menu before our visit but it's not online anywhere. Unfortunately we were disappointed the menu is very over priced for what it is. My daughters unicorn milkshake was pink milkshake, squirty cream and a pile of sweets! Not really a unicorn theme and very overpriced! Around £7 from memory I think! My passion fruit tea really didn't taste of passion fruit at all.

Very very disappointing!! Was a late mothers day treat with my daughter's and grandchildren. We waited just over an hour for our food, we had booked. The food very over priced for what it was, the tea was cold and the shop was freezing!! The children didn't get their cupcakes either.Twice we asked for a heater but request was ignored so we had to sit and eat in out costs!! Unfortunately the customer service was appalling!! We should have complained, but the children were hungry as the didn't eat their lunch as bread stale, getting techy as we were all cold. Would definitely NOT recommend to any one. Maybe just stick to tea and cakes but definitely not the over priced menu. When the food is good, the customer service is great you don't mind paying over the odds as very different experience, but just simply not worth it

No other word but terrible! When arriving at this tea room, the place looked lovely and very nicely decorated. We received our afternoon tea for 5 of us. All I can say is utterly disgusted on how tight the portion size was. The photo shown below is £125 worth of afternoon tea for 5 as well as tea and a slice of cake!!! When asking to speak to the manager, no sense of sorry just rudeness. We were not asked on what sandwich fillings we wanted. We had 2 triangles of Egg which meant 3 people had to go without. When asking for more we had been told there was none left. We came here as a family to celebrate Mother’s Day. Complete waste of money and will not be returning. I completely agree with all the bad reviews. I just wish I had read them before booking our time here.

Thought I would give this another try after my last visit over a year ago. No. Just no. No improvement whatsoever. It has all the glitz and glamour deco but none of the substance. The owner should look into the best service and food available elsewhere. The Swedish cafe in Horsham are spot on. Take a leaf out of their book for improvement.

Went on Wednesday night with 4 friends for a pub meal. Main course was very good but we thought the desert portions were a little on the small size for the price.
