Location stunning overlooking Abersoch Bay. The welcome was very warm absolutely no time pressure, delicious canapes provided whilst having our pre dinner drinks. The menu choice was varied and combinations interesting and on testing were absolutely mouth wateringly delicious. Would highly recommend especially for a celebratory treat.

We walked around the headland and swung into the back garden to the restaurant. we ordered some light bites and they were superb. I haven't had squid that tender and delicious with a delicate batter and salad: best ever. We had a glass of rose. It was a delight to sit in the sunshine looking at one of the best views in Abersoch. This is such a nice spot and the staff are attentive and friendly: we will be back.

Whilst the hotel, which was already great, has seen improvements this year the food, which was an added pleasure, has become, unfortunately, a major disappointment. The menu, which is no longer changed every couple of daily, is not interesting and the specials underwhelming. The cooking and presentation are basic. Three things on a plate do not a great meal make, especially when the prices have become so high. Whilst one can appreciate that places have to deal financially with the post-Covid fallout, we were not the only couple who decided not to eat in. The discussion during the day was where are the best places to eat in Abersoch.

Given the website stated “ Porth Tocyn offers such a good family experience” we booked lunch here in the confidence that they would be child friendly or at least have a children’s menu. The reception from arrival to our swift departure was not friendly nor welcoming. We were given a menu for adults and when I asked for the children’s menu was told that there was no children’s menu. We also noticed a jam jar with dying wasps in on the dining table, it was revolting. My son was upset by it and so we moved it at which point the owner told us in an offhand and rude way that the jar was there to kill the wasps and if we removed the jar from the table the wasps “ will just fly around you then”. This was snapped over at us from across the dining area which was embarrassing. We put the jar back on the table and had wasps flying around us, two of which went in my son’s full glass of apple juice which he then couldn’t drink. We were told by a staff member that apple juice isn’t a good choice of drink given the wasps. We promptly paid and left without staying for lunch. This place is very odd and misleading given the website is about the good family experience but doesn’t cater for children in the restaurant. Never again.

We visited Porth Tocyn for an impromptu lunch and found a hidden gem. A beautiful little hotel in the most fabulous location with far reaching views of the bay and mountains. Non residents are seated outside at present which was perfect for us. The food was delicious although we were disappointed and surprised that they didn’t have an allergens menu. My son’s meal was tasty but not what he would have ordered if he’d been able to check the ingredients of his first choice. Our waitress was friendly but not knowledgeable so asking her about allergens and even what soft drinks were available was pointless. We had a great lunch nonetheless and would definitely return

We eat out a lot and we were blown away with the high quality of the food and the excellent service. I had scallops and tried grilled turbot for the first time. It was delicious and the other 3 guests had the lamb which was described as very tasty. Service was very good with a nice waitress whom we had met before. The young owner who had just had a baby looked after us well including giving us a lift as we couldn’t get a taxi. Yes I know it’s not cheap but it is well well worth it. We will be visiting this restaurant every time we are in Abersoch.

We’ve loved and supported this restaurant for a long time but sometimes i worry about the complexity of the menus and choice on offer. It seems too much and that the chef is trying too hard. I enjoyed out meal but it was spoilt by the addition of a sweet and cloying raspberry sorbet between savoury courses. It was most inappropriate and put me off the meal somewhat. Anyway i wish the younger members of the family all the best as they take more responsibility there and look forward to the next visit ( without the pretentiousness of mid course sorbets)

Food is average at best although some days you can get a great meal but for the overall experience and the price the owner can be very condescending and arrogant. We arrived for lunch on a sunny but chilly October day. We sat outside to enjoy the weather and were kindly offered blankets if we became too cold. Succumbing to the chill and clouds we moved our lunch inside. The interior is beautiful and well maintained. For lunch we ordered a sandwich and Welsh rarebit. The sandwich was delicious and served with a miniature mug of gorgeous, hot soup. The rarebit was served with bacon and a poached egg which was also received well. The chips are an absolute must have, the best we’ve had. We are looking forward to many returns.

What a lovely evening spent with family celebrating a 90th birthday. From an amazing warm welcome from the hosts Nick and Louise and daughter in law Kelly to the quality of the food on the menu and the great service, nothing went amiss. Starters of cauliflower soup and salmon mousse with blinis just whetted the appetite for what was to come. All of us struggled to decide on mains as they all sounded so enticing....eventually settled on duck breast with confit duck leg, belly pork and sea bass, all of which were amazing. After some cheese and biscuits then retired with coffee and petit fours ( included in the price) to the lounge area with the log fire.If you need to eat gluten free because you are coeliac there are no issues just let them know. Many thanks to all for a lovely memorable evening.David, Catherine, John and Jane

We made a couple of visits to this lovely restaurant whilst staying in Abersoch. Firstly for Sunday lunch - excellent choice of meats & a vegetarian option. Freshly cooked vegetables, prompt service, good portions. More vegetables were offered without charge. Secondly for evening dinner which is more of a fine dining experience. Lovely welcome on arrival, chatty, humorous & friendly hosts. We were offered both menu options, set priced a la carte with the option of 2 or 3 courses and the bar meal menu. We opted for the a la carte. Excellent choice, beautifully cooked & presented food. Amuse bouche, sorbet between courses & coffee/petit 4’s all included. This is the only place in Abersoch we returned to for dinner. Ignore the comments about a rude host, not true just one of life’s characters whom we found highly entertaining.

We really enjoyed our dinner here and are most impressed by the extensive wine list. The wines are excellent value especially the more expensive ones. The uniforms the waitresses wear seem a bit 1980s tie for wrap around style but all were very friendly and attentive. We can recommend all the puddings and I think the fish pie was the winner. The Sunday buffet kept us entertained for quite some time, the clientele were worth observing and I have to mention that I have never seen so many people return to a buffet table so many times, clearly the older generation in this wonderful town in Wales are kept very healthy with the sea air and copious amounts of good food ! Having now been several times with family we are never disappointed with the gorgeous help your self Sunday lunch. All homemade, we love the selection of cold salads, meats and seafood to start with, (usually go back twice!) Especially enjoyed the thai and Moroccan salads and poached salmon this time but can't fault it all. Then hot dishes, one duck, one beef, one chicken and a veggie dish give good selection of different flavours and tastes served with rice and potatoes.BUT it's the puddings you must leave room for again all homemade and beautiful! Especially recommend the sticky toffee pudding, definitely the best I've ever had! So light even managed two portions! Delicious. Thank you for the gorgeous food and fantastic hospitality as usual!

Loved the duck main. The dessert table however exceeded all expectations with the lightest, loveliest Sticky Toffee pudding ever tasted, plus Eve's pudding- 'fantastic' according to my husband as was the rice pudding. The weather was just right so after a little 'digestive' walk coffee (included) was enjoyed on the terrace. Travelling down the Llyn peninsula on a hot August day, looking for somewhere to eat but finding all the towns too full to park in, we followed a 'hotel' sign as a rather last ditch effort, and food seemed even more unlikely as we drove down the single track roads. The Porth Tocyn hotel gave us an extraordinarily warm welcome to their Sunday lunch buffet (generally best to book ahead: we were very lucky!). We started off with the best gin & tonic I've had, then moved into the gracious dining room where there were three hot dishes plus a plethora of salads - the buffet table truly seemed to be groaning with food. But as a sweet toothed person the highlight for me was the dessert table, again with a huge choice of desserts. My husband had a perfect summer pudding while I had two helpings of a light, fluffy but tasty queen of puddings - something you hardly ever see on a restaurant menu. After a good strong cup of coffee we wandered off into the hotel's beautiful grounds before sadly departing and wondering if such a wonderful place really existed, or we'd had a kind of 'Brigadoon' experience. It's a magical holiday memory.

Came by here on a driving holiday. Stayed in a single room. Comfortable old world charm and gracious host. The bed was small, a single, the room over the kitchen door squeaky but not at bed time. My only complaint was room 5 didn't have a vanity mirror for shaving or a toilet roll holder. A bit strange for the best hotel in the area. Ate at the hotel restaurant which, whilst very pleasant, struggles to be top notch. It wasn't cheap and the food was "complicated" read French with a Welsh twist. My fowl was over done and the main a bit heavy. We polished off a couple of bottles of wine and had a good chat with some of the guests who were all dressed up for Saturday dinner. Breakfast was a mix of continental and English and very nicely done. The garden with a tennis court and pool was pleasant. The various lounge rooms have very comfortable chairs to sit, read, snooze or have afternoon tea. All in all, you could spend a few days here relaxing and taking in the sea views whilst enjoying the hospitality. I'd return.

I stayed here for three nights in July and I found it to be a wonderful comfortable and relaxed place. The staff was very friendly and happy to help me with whatever I needed. The restaurant is especially good with a different menu each day using local produce and cooked to perfection. We ate so much for breakfast that we didn't need lunch. There were only a couple of things which could be improved. There was a connecting door between my room and next door and I could hear every cough and sniff from my neighbour. The wifi was also patchy. However these would not put me off staying again. If you are looking for a base on the Lleyn peninsula then this is perfect. The views are tremendous and all the best bits of North Wales are easily reached by car.

Took my gf there for a random treat and didn't quite know what to expect. The location was beautiful, rural whilst looking out over the abersoch beaches and sea front. We went in and sat down and as we weren't sure of what to expect we were a little taken aback by the price of the food. That being said it wasn't unreasonable and we agreed even more so after we saw the quality of what it was. I enjoy good food and I have to say it was up there with some of the best. The staff were amazing and very professional and polite. The only issues I had were that it was expensive maybe a tad too much, but only a tad. I didn't walk away feeling that I hadn't got my money's worth and my gf loved it. Four of us went here for dinner. It's old-fashioned, with an older clientele, but the food is inventive and everything we chose was excellent, and we enjoyed the off-the-menu canapés as well. The Bloody Mary sorbet (served as an amuse bouche) was 'interesting'! The wine was good too. We had coffee in one of their several lounges. It wasn't cheap - a fixed price of £47 for three courses - but with brilliant, friendly service from the team of waitresses we didn't feel ripped off. The view out to sea is pretty amazing - complete with a rainbow that lasted a good 20 minutes (but this can't be guaranteed). So all in all a good place.

If you are looking for something a bit special then the Porth Tocyn fits the bill. Nick, the proprietor, creates one of the best ‘Dry Martinis’ that can only be beaten by the view from the terrace of Snowdonia across Abersoch bay. The menu changes daily and sources fresh local produce; the fish is excellent and accompanied by a sauce that heightens the flavour. If the fillet steak is available I would encourage you to try it; the portions are generous and the Chef will accommodate your preference from ‘blue’ to ‘well done’. The waters and waitresses enhance the dining experience with attentive but discreet service.

The decor is not to my tastes, everything looked about 1000 years old, but I guess that's just the style. The buffet itself is absolutely excellent, three courses and you can return for more as many times as you like. This week featured a huge range of salads and seafood but leave room for dessert! The chocolate and syrup cake was one of the best desserts I've ever tasted and creme brûlée a little pot of perfection. Definitely recommended.

We stayed as a couple at Porth Tocyn, which was our first time in the UK. The first night was stormy but very quiet with the rain, which was actually nice and the second day was quite sunny and beautiful. You're paying for the seclusion and views, which is pretty spectacular. I wish I had brought a book to read to lounge outward during he suny day, as it is quite very much that sort of establishment. The beaches are within 30 minute walking, and the trail leads to a less busy side of the beaches where cara are not allowed. Again, seclusion rather than outgoing people. The interior looks like a large country home, complete with mismatched wooden chairs and floral-print armchairs and couches. There are more than your fair share of porcelain statuettes of dogs and cats with small clusters of older paperback books people had previously left behind.I agree with previous reviewers; there is a small Fawlty Towers vibe. But the food was nice, the tea and coffee rather plentiful, and the establishment was made for a quiet stay. The dining room and lounges are relatively small and cozy so you will overhear conversations throughout. It was a nice stay. Room 16 has bay windows that open to the ocean, though the ceiling is thin and you can hear your upstairs neighbors. Would likely spend another stay on our next Trip to the UK when we need a break from city life.

I really wanted to like this place, I really did. But I didn't. Maybe it was overhyped, maybe my expectations were too high.In my mind this Hotel was the place to be and eat in Abersoch, expensive, luxurious, exclusive. It turned out just to be one, expensive ( and I do not mind paying if it's worth it).The location is excellent, with views over the bay / sea. The hotel / restaurant could be good, but it wasn't great. The only way I could accurately describe the Hotel was a bit shabby on the outside ( window sills need painting), and a bit like an old peoples home on the inside ( which looking at the majority of Hotel guests was suitably fitting). I have to say I wasn't staying at the Hotel but may have been disappointed if I was.I ate lunch twice. The first time was Ok but not to the standard I was expecting. The second time was a bit shambolic with arguments overheard in the kitchen, and burnt food being clearly served. Strangely reminiscent of Fawlty Towers. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, the drinks overpriced. I couldn't help thinking, looking around at the view, that I'd rather be at the house on the hill being renovated in a more modern style. Maybe it's just me.Location 4/5, staff 4/5, food 3/5, value 3/5.

Visited for Sunday lunch (buffet) as went on the Saturday for an afternoon glass of wine and were made to feel really welcome so booked Sunday lunch. We asked the format for lunch and where advised 'well it's a little chaos but you'll have cold starters, hot mains and a good selection of puddings and struggle to walk home' ! This was all true.... The cold table was the most impressive I've seen with something for everyone and you can't help but try everything. Mains had a selection of three meat dishes, rice, potatoes and vegetables (I had a little of all except the veg) the duck was very tasty and would have had more if my stomach would have allowed! Pudding (if you can fit it in) are very English, syrup sponge, pavlova, chocolate brownies, berry crumble. We also had a bottle of wine and the bill came to just over £70 which seems a little expensive for buffet but for everything you get it would not put me off visiting again.Go and try its full of character!

This was actually the 2nd time we ate at the restaurant and the food, wine and service was very good. Cocktails whilst sat outside looking at the stunning view out to the ocean followed by fresh seafood and then beef. My Wife is vegan and nothing was too much trouble for these guys. A great evening.

It is a year since we were in this part of Wales & yes we had dinner at Porth Tocyn. As expected the owner & staff were all friendly. Again a table by the window, but this time I chose venison & the meal was outstanding - relatively strong flavoured, which we really enjoyed. Highly recommended

The Porth Tocyn always lives up to its amazing vista. There's nothing better than sitting in in the sun - yes, the sun does shine in Wales - gazing across the fields to the harbor, and eating a wonderful lunch, served by charming people. The first time we were there, twenty of so year ago, we'd just missed Sir Anthony Hopkins, and lunch was still an amazing experience. Every time is . This time we both had Welsh Rarebit - not the trite spread on toast, but wonderful "soldiers" - for the Yanks, soldiers are made by cutting a piece of toast lengthwise into four strips. The Welsh Rarebit itself was soft and warm; the soldiers were piled up casually. They served a lovely side salad of local produce with a mustard vinagarette. The amazement was the potato skins, thin potato strips deep friend. Fabulous! We topped it off with a strawberry raspberry trifle which was too rich and wonderful for the two of us to finish. If you want a lovey lunch, this is the place. Be a little adventurous; you aren't really going to the end of the world - it just seems that way. Just follow the signs as the road grows ever narrower.

Great food, beautiful location, excellent staff. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was it was a bit chaotic, but that might have just been on the day we visited (Sunday 24th May). The food was really impressive, superb quality and varied for a Sunday lunch. They serve it buffet style, two sittings 1215 and 1330. If you find a better 'sticky toffee pudding' anywhere you'll be lucky...!Plenty of space outside too.

This must have been our tenth return. As soon as we are settling in the room and look over the sunset in Cardigan Bay holiday is there and all stress just disappears. Walk along the beach to Abersoch. Place was buzzing today with families. Then walk the other way and within 15 minutes we found ourselves alone in Porth Cariad with the most gorgeous waves running up the pristine sand between the cliffs. Lambing has been in full flight so tons of little ones out in the fields. Porth Tocyn is just 5 minutes from the cost-path: The food is outstanding, original, fresh, the wine menu excellent and Nick and his wife are always charming and funny hosts. This is not a chain and don't expect formulaic grins. But if you need to step away from it all: this is the place to be. Thank you so much for two days of perfect uncomplicated bliss.

I just love the Porth Tocyn Hotel. Every meal has been fantastic. Its not just the food but also the atmosphere that sets this hotel / restaurant apart from others in the area.( and further)Great hosting by Nick and his staff, a fantastic setting / ambience and superb food all ensure that its is always my first choice and recommendation to others if dinning on the Lleyn Peninsula. In short, its a friendly, homely, at times entertaining ( which adds to the experience !) quality country hotel that offers fantastic food and dinning experience, For my 50th birthday, I wanted to treat my immediate family to dinner. My obvious choice was Porth Tocyn. We had an absolutely fabulous evening. Thank you very much for making my celebrations so special.Hotels like this are rare. Forget the boutique type, clinical dinning, experience.Porth Tocyn is in a league of its own. This is how all restaurant, hotels should be. SUPERB

Sunday lunch at this hotel is always a gastronomic delight, enhanced or otherwise, depending on your point of view by the colourful proprietor. You need a good sense of humour to withstand his Basil Fawlty style, on our most recent visit he was heard bellowing across a busy restaurant about why cheese was now too expensive to serve within a set price menu. However, do not let this deter you, our food was excellent & a delightful way to spend a sunny Sunday in Wales

Having enjoyed a superb evening earlier on in the year, we decided to treat the family to lunch.Having checked opening times we arrived at 1.50pm to the owner barking at 2 poor children and then told to find a table if there is one (there were!)Having gone in to order we were asked to order quickly as they were very busy and were shutting the kitchen. However the owner then seemed to change his mind saying he couldn't serve us, after further discussion he kindly agreed to he would ! Naturally we left and cancelled the following weeks booking.Very disappointing- having thought it was a place we would enjoy for many years. My advice if you're not able to arrive by helicopter don't bother !

We have been frequenting The Porth Tocyn for years and my parents before us! Overall we love it but a recent experience has left a bad taste. We arrived for a 'lite bite" lunch to be greeted by the owner who informed us that he wasn't doing lunches for "people like us" from outside. I had no idea what this meant but I hope, in future, he can cope with the popular lunch time business he has created. I also have to add that we live in Abersoch so I don't really consider myself to be an "outsider"! Nick needs to realise where good custom comes from.

A beautiful old building in delightful surroundings. Don't even THINK about drinking and driving - those lanes are narrow! Only called in for a 'lite-bite' lunch but have to say that the quality of food was superb and the plate was filled with little extras that really impressed. Mine host is somewhat eccentric (but delightfully so) and the waitresses, although very willing, are possibly new in for the season, but all in all a very pleasant lunchtime.Big plus - ladies 'loos' fastidiously clean and equipped with excellent products and 'proper' individual hand towels.Slight minus - our table appeared not to have been cleaned properly after breakfast service and we had sleeves and handbags covered in 'sticky stuff' - honey?

Dinner for 4 on Saturday Night 19th July. As ever a warm welcome from Owner Nick.Lovely Amuse Bouche was a small cup of tasty soup. Followed by excellent Scallops, Champagne Sorbet, Venison and Profiteroles, followed in the lounge by Coffee and Petit Fours. Delightful staff who serve you and all make you feel welcome. We have eaten there many times over the years - I cannot ever recollect eating anything that wasn't good. Our guests from Overseas were equally impressed. Our only regret is that as we have a holiday home nearby, we never get to stay the night.

We visited this restaurant last night to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary, we read good reviews and thought it would be lovely to visit whilst we were staying in the area. However upon first arriving we did not feel welcome at all and were made to feel somewhat uncomfortable. The restaurant staff seemed to be rushing people to their table and the maître de was rather pompous! We chose to take a seat in the waiting area overlooking the bay which I have to say was not as good as expected. Whilst we looked through the menu our "nibbles" were not refreshed from the last people, which clearly we did not want to eat, we however sat patiently and waited. Other tables were receiving service however we were left. When the waitress came to take our order, the maître de ordered her to leave our table as "she" was not in a rush and clearly hotel staying guests received preferential treatment. I have never been spoken to in this manner and have visited a lot nicer establishments where customer service comes first. Clearly our faces didn't fit and the maître de certainly made that known. We left after a drink and was not even questioned to the reason for us not staying to dine there, clearly again as our face did not fit they made us feel unwelcome and hence were happy we were leaving. Do not visit this restaurant if you want customer service from the maître de as he is clearly lacking customer service which in my opinion should come first, whether a hotel resident or not.

It is a couple of years since we have been, but we were greeted by the welcoming owner. We chose different mains & that made the difference as to how we rated the meal. I chose the fish & was dissappointed - it came rolled in something like bacon, whilst hubby chose the beef & he really rated itOverall the experience was fine (except for my main) - the restaurant was full & we had a seat by the window. We will no doubt return - but will give the fish a miss next time

We had a lovely meal at the Porth Tocyn recently. The menu is wonderful and the prices are on the upper end of the market for the local area, but I think still represent good value. I had venison, which was perfectly cooked and delicious. My partner had tagliatelle - also fantastic. The puddings were superb! I want to go back to work my way through the whole menu. My only gripe is that the service on the night started off well (the ladies were all great) but ended up being quite slow and unattentive. Our young waiter seemed to be quite new (at least I hope he was), lots of little (but cumulatively annoying) mistakes, and the service got slower and slower to the point of vanishing, which was a bit of a shame. Generally though, I'd still highly recommend this beautifully located restaurant. Ideal for a special occasion too.

You could be forgiven for thinking the building looks a little tired, but it is an old fashioned gem. Run by a husband and wife team - it is warming to the soul that places like this still exist. We went twice whilst there for a weeks stay and both times it was first class. We were able to sit outside in the sun both times. Crab sandwiches, welsh rarebit, a fabulously generous cheese board, leek soup, and more was had along with homemade bakewell tart etc for puddings. We didn't need it but it was too good to turn down. This place has fabulous views, is quiet, is dog friendly and shouldn't be missed.

We have been coming to Abersoch for many years and our treat is always the Sunday buffet at the Porth Tocyn. The food is excellent and there is a constant supply with dishes on the buffet being replenished as required so the food is always fresh. The views are beautiful from the dining room and it has a real family atmosphere with residents and non residents all tucking in to high quality food. It is a help yourself buffet but very friendly staff are on hand to clear away used plates and they are always ready to help serve out main courses if needed. The house wines are excellent and reasonably priced.

This place is in a beautiful location. You have to drive through Abersoch and turn left and go through a series of twisty, narrow lanes to get there. It's located in an affluent part of the peninsula with super views of the sea. The atmosphere is cosy and homely - like a sprawling cottage that has been extended over the years. The staff are friendly but the owner was rude to my partner which spoilt my evening even though my partner played it down and explained that the owner had a reputation for being somewhat bumptious and obnoxious. We had the three course meal which was not great. One of the starters was good but one of the mains was terrible and inexcusable really. The cheese board is good though. Petits Fours were the highlight of what was otherwise a bit of a debacle, food wise. The dining room does have a nice atmosphere though. It's certainly expensive here and with wine and brandy a meal for two was about £130. We said we wouldn't go back now for a while as there are better in the area with a better chef and a nicer owner. Ultimately the food was the biggest disappointment and the man who runs the place does have a bizarre attitude to what are his customers. In summary, the location is lovely but this is spoilt by the negatives.

On a recent visit to Barmouth we found this little Gem of a place that is open on Sundays. There was a special board out side and it was the Cheese and Onion pie that drew us in . Both my husband and me had this and it came with new potatoes and salad . It was delicious and very reasonably priced . We were naughty and were too tempted by the delicious homemade sweets and puds they had to offer . I had the jam and coconut cake and my husband opted for the apple pie. They were presented lovely with fruit and a pot of cream on the side. The staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be returning next time we are in Barmouth
