Porters in Hastings

Haven’t been here for a while ! We only popped in for a drink but decided to have a bite to eat because the food looked so good and it didn’t disappoint, we shared pork belly served with a tasty sauce and had rosemary salted fries on the side , it was delicious ! This is a great place with lovely staff and a buzzing atmosphere 😊🤩🥰

The food was fantastic, the service was good but slightly slow. It wouldn't put us off coming again as the food was worth the wait.

Everything was pleasant, we got to choose out table and the waitress was lovely. When it came to the bill, I was waiting to pay a long time because the girl was talking. I may as well have walked out, which probably would have got her attention maybe? Possibly needed an extra person behind the bar.

Service is poor, wouldn’t normally leave a review but this is the third time we have been here and been disappointed, the last time we visited we waited so long for service we left.

Filet steak on a hot rock and a bordeaux. Spectacular.

We cannot actually comment on the food as we were ignored and didn't get served. Staff were too pre-occupied with other things and showed no interest in us. We went in without a booking. No acknowledgement from staff as we walked in. It took a while to get the attention from either of the two waitresses at the bar. We asked for a table for two and despite a few tables being free we were taken downstairs to a very cold and soul-less basement (a patio door was left open making it cold). We asked to go back upstairs. Was told a table for two was free but needed clearing first. Astonishingly, the waitress who cleared our table just walked off afterwards, showing no interest in us waiting at the bar. No one came over to say our table was ready and neither showed us to our table so we just sat ourselves down. We overheard our waitress being told to "write up the board" which she stopped and did. This is the point where we were forgotten I think. We were really hungry so after about 15-20 mins of waiting with no orders being taken, we decided to eat elsewhere. As we were leaving the waitress behind the bar looked up and said with a smile and a cheery tone of voice "oh, bye then" completely oblivious that we hadn't eaten. I was so annoyed, I said "you really need to pay attention to your customers. We've not eaten and have been waiting nearly 20 mins and you have totally ignored us". All I got was a pathetic "oh sorry" but by then we were out the door. I hope Porters management are reading this as they need to train their staff to acknowledge customers upon arrival and to communicate to each other that customers are waiting. Greeting, seating and getting orders taken promptly are key to a successful restaurant. Being ignored by your staff made us feel unwelcome, the consequence of which is you lost our custom.

First we were told there were no burgers because they had no buns, not quite sure how difficult it is to pop to the two local shops to get buns but anyway. I ordered chicken milanese, when it turned up it was all soggy and the chicken was tough. My partner had monkfish curry and it was so overcooked the fish was just a mush and inedible. One of our children had macaroni, which looked like it could have come out of the oven half an hour earlier as it was all dried up and just horrible. I had heard good things about this place but would definitely not visit again nor recommend.

So delicious consistently. 10/10. Friendly service Excellent value. Thank you for always getting it right.

Excellent food, we had the Chicken Milanese and their Sussex Beef Burger with Stilton. This meal is in a different league to another pub just up the road!! Both dishes were full of flavour and the meat was moist with the burger being chargrilled gave it better flavour and texture. The bar itself was a great atmosphere and the staff were polite and friendly.

Ate a delicious fish and chips in the beautiful garden area, service was fast and friendly. Would definitely recommend!

Stopped off for dinner before a long drive home. Nice atmosphere and top food. Pork Belly was amazing, good portion size too, kids shared a Hake Fish & Chips with dry crushed peas and it was nicely done and presented, ribeye however left something to be desired. Big chunk of fat in the middle and was quite tough, served on a hot stone it got a bit smokey under my face. I mean it looked nice but I wouldn't get it again, especially for the price. The Hells Larger went down an absolute treat too. Would return if down in hastings again for sure.

Waited an hour for any food, seemed quite busy, but not packed for a Monday night. Portions inconsistent, seemed as if the kitchen were not coping with the number of covers. Very salty food. No apologies for delay, no attentive service, overall not a particularly relaxing evening.

We came as an unbooked table of 7, very speedy food, tasted brilliant, good portion sizes and very lovely service, thank you!

We ate on Saturday early afternoon on pirate weekend so quite busy. Service was good allowing our friend to move our table to one that she preferred. I asked for my burger to be as pink as they dared, when it came to the table it was perfect, one of the best burgers that I've had. My girlfriend had their chicken burger which she said was very good though she wished she had mine. WELL DONE CHEF.

Great service, food was fantastic and so was the service. It is very small inside and does get busy for obvious reasons but I would visit again

Staff are really lovely. Vegetarian roast didn't work , mushy and flavour off. Also came smothered in gravy , which isn't my thing. Should have asked for gravy in the side maybe my fault

Pork belly bites were yummy, had the sussex beef burger with stilton which was great, chips were good also. Friendly staff.

Loved the atmosphere of this Hastings Old Town delight, but the food and service stole the show. Great recommendations from our waitress (sorry didn’t catch your name) who went above a beyond and made us feel very welcome! Hard to choose a winner but I think dessert was maybe the highlight. Can’t wait to return!

Incredible lunch this weekend. Such lovely food, brilliant variety on the menu and the staff were so friendly. Always love a trip to Porters and this was no different. Thank you, we will be back for sure!

Absolutely shocking the place was filthy the staff were uneducated and unhelpful! The food was diabolical this place used to be one of the best in the old town but sadly has gone down hill! The toilets were one for the the health authorities to visit asap We walked out and refused to pay after contacting trading standards. The food was cold,raw and dry . The soup was a cold mix of blended vegetable pulp

Previously Sunday lunch here was excellent, which was why we looked forward to it, but today unfortunately the roast lamb had tough meat and hard beans and cabbage. (We didn't notice the steak knives until we had finished!) However, the cauliflower and broccoli cheese was delicious as were the carrots (slightly overdone), tender stem broccoli, roast potatoes , Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Very good quantity for a reasonable price so one shouldn't complain too much but I brought it to the young lady's attention and got the nondescript apology. Useful to know that dogs are allowed but bring a cushion as the seats are hard.

Had Sunday lunch. The lamb was tough . Some of the veg was good but the beans cabbage and broccoli were almost raw. It was very disappointing.

Three of us went for a quick dinner and it was really nice. The Belly of pork and the chicken supreme were highly recommended by my friends.

Great place for a Sunday roast and drinks in the garden !

Took a bit of time to order but not the end of the world, shame the wrong dish came out and the lady was too busy to care. She also didn’t bring us cutlery with our food, I asked after receiving my food but still waited for a long time, so I went and asked 10 minutes later…. Still waiting so I went and got my own off another table. Nearly an hour later and still nobody came to ask about the food etc, which was a bit mediocre anyway.

Stumbled across this place yesterday, gorgeous garden courtyard, dog friendly sat in the sun, ordered small plates calamari, beef skewers, cauliflower, all tasted amazing. Reasonably priced, friendly staff, would recommend🩷

The best restaurant in Hastings! Amazing food, fantastic atmosphere! Big garden plus lots of seating space indoors. Jazz music at the background and lovely staff. The food was incredible too and prices weren’t bad at all.

An Easter Sunday spur of the moment decision to eat out, very busy but we were offered a table for four immediately, chose the garden as the weather was surprisingly warm. Drinks, food, service and music ALL excellent.

Totally nice location with really good food and even cheap wines. The service was a bit stressful on our evening because the shop was full shortly before Easter and there was also live music, by the way, the extraordinary Mrs. Liane Caroll, but still friendly at all times. Go, eat and enjoy the music. This is Hastings!

Went here last night ,22nd March . expanded and opened up stairs, total chaos , too few staff to cope , as night went on staff were run ragged, we had to collect our own glasses, spoons, muscles served cold and not cooked properly . Worst place I have been to in ages

It’s a nice atmosphere and music but service and food can be very disappointing.. long wait and mixed up orders.. my stater was so salty I could not eat it at all. Pie came ok but so little of it for the price. Next to us was couple who ordered steak on hot stone, whole room filled with smoke and all of us could not even breathe 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ how can it be so hot to burn the meat 🥩 to choke other customers? We stunk for whole day Not going to recommend unless they improve it

Celebrated a wedding anniversary here. Food was brilliant would recommend the chilli. Anna was pleasant and welcoming. All in all a great lunch.

We went for an evening Sunday roast and read the reviews before and so was a bit worried as many said about the staff not being very attentive . But some good reviews of food. The staff were excellent and friendly and the atmosphere was ok. However the roast was not much better than a school dinner with under cooked potatoes & parsnips, the meat was full of gristle and the cauliflower cheese actually smelt like school canteen food and tasted terrible of margarine and cheap cheese and it was pale too so inedible. Also the gravy was added already and not much of it. The wine was good though. I think this place should stick to the wine and olives/ snacks. The food was not cheap either so a very disappointing evening all in all. We would never eat there again but maybe a glass of wine.

It was nice. Not very extensive menu choices and nothing really 'special'. Wine was expensive.

My wife often eats out with friends here and always saying how good it is, but the real beer choice was poor, so I do not go. However we booked for my birthday and they now do a better choice of beers and have good beers from Longman. I had the rump steak on the rock and my wife, sirloin. For the price the quality was very high, certainly the best steak I have had in a very long time. Although very quiet, no table service for drinks and no one checks, so missing out on sales there, that is for sure. Having said that, the evening was very pleasant and will be going back now they have a better selection of beers.

Service great as the waitress was a right laugh, food tasted amazing.. Great menu would definitely recommend.

The person who greeted us when we arrived said 'can I help you?', tone and expression suggesting perhaps we shouldn't be there. I'd booked a table for 4, we were given a table that was clearly for 2. Thinking this was a mistake, I said 'oh there are 4 of us'. the answer was simply 'this IS a table for 4'. We sat. Five minutes later another member of staff offered to change the table, to be fair it was our decision not to move. However, although the restaurant wasn't at all busy were were then totally ignored, not even a menu in HALF AN HOUR. Eventually one of our party went up to the bar where two of the staff were standing around talking, and took one. Suddenly one of the wait staff appeared with menus, as if they'd only just seen us (we were literally right in front of them). When we'd finished eating, nobody bothered to come to clear the table, or to ask if we wanted/ needed anything else, or offer us dessert or coffee. When we stood up to leave, someone did appear to clear, without of course interrupting her conversation with the other staff at the bar. A few years back Porters was a great place to eat, always packed at weekends, good atmosphere. Not any more, and given the level of service (which also has a very negative impact on the atmosphere in genera) this is hardly surprising.

So pretentious and and full of people who think they're better than you. Ok if you're a devout lefty

One of several perfectly adequate wine bar / restaurants in Hastings, the food here is perfectly ok, but the manager was extremely unhelpful to me and my two friends. Also the two drinks I’d usually choose on tap both ran out. Overall a negative experience. They do book a load of excellent musicians, though, usually solo or duo — worth checking out.

Had a meal here with a friend, the staff were very friendly and the Biscoff Cheesecake was delicious. Yum!

Roasts are amazing. Homemade yourkshire pud, my friends quote was, "that yourkshires as big as my face." 😍

Nice spot in the middle of the old town with easy walking distance to other areas, and near to bus stop locations. Great selection of things to have for lunch and supper times, with helpful staff and a great spot to sit in as well.

A great place to come to for a few hours and a meal or something, good food and drink options plus a time can be spent here when out and about in the old town. Near to bus stops and along the seafront as well, highly recommend.

The only stake was nice.the rest of the food wasn't nice.starters very oily and had no choice, actually.

Disappointed. Made a booking for particular table and was told the table was not requested at all. I did request the table and when we arrived the table was occupied. As we are regular costumers for years and this isn't afirst time that we have been let down....the person taking booking asure as that we have that table and this happened before. Very disappointed

Me and my partner dine here at least once a week, lunch menu is very reasonable, lovely staff.

Lovely staff. Made very welcome. Decent portions of food. Reasonably priced. Will come again.

My husband & I met our friends for a Sunday roast, lovely atmosphere & the roast was a 10/10 absolutely gorgeous! Generous portions & very, very tasty, we would definitely go back! The wine was very good too!

We spent a few days in Hastings for new year and had had this wine bar recommended to us and had booked for NyE dinner at 20:00 about 2 months in advance so we had plans for NYE. We had a phone call on 30th December to say the kitchen was now going to close at 20:00 when our table was booked for and needed to be there at 19:00. Ok we thought things happen but we will still be out and make the most of it. 31st December at 16:30 they called again and cancelled our booking completely as head chef had gone home, so now nowhere to go on NYE and to be honest it felt like they had always intended to close NyE. My advice would be don’t bother even if it is supposed to be quite nice as unreliable

We booked a table over a month ago for Christmas Eve. We were reassured over the phone that we would be on the ground floor. When we arrived (after queuing at the bar for ages) we were directed to a table upstairs that was obviously put in as an afterthought, right on the corner so we were constantly pushed by people going past. It was not reserved, or set up. We could only assume that our table had been given away. We left after one very expensive round of drinks. I have been to Porters many times over the last 20 years and after today will not be returning. It seems the restaurant is going downhill. One of our party said that they’d been let down recently by them and will not be returning either. A shame as it used to be a lovely place to go for a relaxed meal.

Paid deposit £60 this was not taken off the final bill

Gone downhill badly! Went with friends for a Xmas meal. We are all in our 50s and not a drunk group of idiots. So when it came to the bill we soon realised we had been overcharged by £150!!!! It took a lot of questions to staff to get this rectified. Poor service, food ok. After years of going to Porters I have to say I won't bother again. George, you need to sort your staff out!

Walked in and the girl serving at the bar did not make us feel welcome, we explained we had a table booked and she looked at us like we were something she had scraped off her shoe. She then asked us to follow her which we obeyed and followed and she stopped and took someone’s order. Odd we thought, when we asked where we should go she waved her hand toward the direction of a table right next to the fire. Sounds lovely? It wasn’t we were so hot as we’re about 2 inches away from it. The food was average nothing special mine had big hunks of fat. Service very slow. Very disappointed as the pub seemed nice.

On this occasion the food was really nice.

Lily’s 21st Birthday . Staff were great very attentive and the food was lovely . They had 41 people upstairs and every table was filled in the restaurant & bar area, they were so busy , but still managed to bring out her cake , candles & sparkles. Great atmosphere and would definitely recommend Porters , we all thoroughly enjoyed it . Thankyou 💯🙌

Was okay wouldn’t rush back, overpriced!

Repeat customer but not sure we will rush back. 5 members of staff but no one to take our dinner order. The pork belly had been left to rest too long in a moist environment so the crackling was soft. The Yorkshires were dry. Food order wasn't what we asked for, drinks order mixed up. Just not great an experience.

The food was excellent though it was freezing in there. I appreciate the cost though when you have paid for a meal , I think it would have been a more enjoyable experience had we been warm

We went here for my mums 50th birthday. The service was ok asked a few questions such as soup of the day which she didn’t know. The food we had all came with veg. The carrots were basically raw to put a steak knife through them was tough and the green beans were very crunchy and near raw. The mash with the pork belly was very lumpy. The deserts we had were underwhelming. However the kids ice cream was good. The biscoff cheesecake was very bland had no taste of biscoff. The crumble wasn’t a normal crumble topping it was just like crushed biscuit. The crumble didn’t come with custard like said on the menu. Nor was there sorbet that was meant to come with the cheesecake. The children’s deserts were brought out before we even had a desert order taken for the adults. The kids meals were meant to come with peas however came with cucumber and tomato which we weren’t told about. These few mishaps or little mistakes added up and lead to a rather disappointing experience especially on such a special occasion. Also my child who’s legs were under the table came out filthy. she had white tights on and around the knees and on the lower leg there were brown

Lovely little hidden gem the courtyard is really nice with the vines above. Really like this place just a shame you can hear everything from the kitchen shut the door and windows if you feel like talking the way you did today not a great advertisement foe such a lovely place.

Went there for lunch today. While the ambience and wine list have always been good, I was most impressed by how the food has clearly improved with a new chef. The Thai red curry monkfish and king prawn was excellent as was the pan fried Sea Bream. Service was great, as expected and the entire place very welcoming. Its very dog-friendly incidentally. A great choice for lunch or supper in Hastings old town.

I really don't think I could fault this place at all. Food was exceptionally good, delivered with brilliant, attentive service in a relaxed atmosphere. Prices were very good value. The whole experience of dining here was top notch.

Things change over time and it's been a very long time since I ate here. We had a good meal and enjoyed our evening.

booked a table for large party and paid deposit, on day of meal few people didnt show but they wouldny allow the extra money paid by deposit to be used for the meal so had to pay extra. food is amazing but the service and attitude of the manager is very questionable

We all love Porters. It's such a welcoming space, great food, top class musicians and really great staff who do their best to make you have a great experience whether you are a local or a visitor to the town.

Excellent lunch. Poached eggs on mashed avocado with bacon.

What an amazing place 3 of us visited Sunday was not disappointed.!!!!! We had a roast definitely the best roast we've eaten out, it had the wow!!! factor. Very big portions couldnt manage all mine but the boys helped out the belly of pork would highly recommended and the roast beef looked good too x Not usually keen eating roast out but really didn't disapoint we definitely would go back highly recommend. The staff were so friendly nothing to much for them all happy full of smiles. Atmosphere great even have live bands which unfortunately couldn't stay for. Thanks to you all at Porters see you soon !!

One of the best places to eat in Hastings. It serves modern, simple and classic cooking with the general vibe of a mother trying to feed you up on a visit home.

Not been for years but always had a good reputation so chose it for our first wedding anniversary meal. Upon entering was busy, eventually approached by a staff member. Had to wait for our reserved table 5 minutes as someone still sitting at it. First course was nice enough, but upon being served had no knives or forks. Chased up and given forks but no knives, so has to chase again. Chose pork belly for main and had to send it back, it was not tender, but tough and fatty (yes I know pork belly has fat in it but should be a melt in the mouth cut if cooked well). Another diner sent hers back so not just me doubting quality. Had it replaced with a lamb kofta. Husband had a burger but he didn’t rate it very highly. He had to chase up for sauces and salt or vinegar as wasn’t asked if he wanted anything. We didn’t bother with a dessert as didn’t want to be disappointed anymore. Courtyard was pleasant to sit in. Sadly we won’t be rushing back. Lots better places locally to eat at.

Another great meal at Porters! We both had the pork belly which was sensational! Great place and excellent service. We'll be back!
