Pricey. ££44 for 4 hot drinks and 4 smallish bacon sandwiches. Pleasant owners though and open earlier than other similar establishments in the town. But £44! Wow

After a wander around Helmsley there was a need to stop for food and drink. Plenty of places to do this but we chose the back patio area of Porters, surrounded by lovely baskets and pots of colourful flowers in a shaded area. Food and drink were ordered inside and then brought to our chosen table outside. Nothing fancy - just nice coffee and tasty food on a sunny day.

After lunch we spent the afternoon at Duncombe Park and despite checking online, found cafe shut when we were ready for our afternoon coffee. Common problem in UK. What are tourists supposed to do after attractions close and before dinner? No wonder Costa and Starbucks are so popular.

Pick your sandwich/panini/toastie from the fridge, order coffee at counter, pay - they serve the sandwich up on a plate with homemade pickles/side salad and bring it to your table (no table service someone notes.... yes, they bring the food after selected to you at your table). Friendly family run business - BEST BLT on grain bread ever - no fat on the bacon just perfect. May be a bit more expensive but you're not getting rubbish in your food - quality products. Off there now actually! Not many places open up here on a Monday - but they are.... BONUS!

Stopped off for some breakfast on way home. Only coffee shop that appeared to be open in the area. Shop was lovely warm and cosy. Lady who served us was very polite we had 2 coffees with oat milk and 2 Brie and cranberry paninis which did come with a little side salad which was tasty. This came to around £24 which did feel a little over priced for what they were.

If I could give porters a six i I would! The staff really went the extra mile and made our stay delightful. The rooms were luxury at every level. With comfortable beds an amazing bathroom and very clean. We loved the tv and how big it was and the view to Helmsley castle is so amazing. The breakfast was lovely we loved the yogurt and fruit and the presentation was splendid. We loved every second of our stay and would stay again in a heartbeat. It’s very reasonably priced for what you get!

Have used Porters many times in the past and found it to be a friendly welcoming place , and the host very friendly. Sadly after our visit we will not be using again. Still the same owners but it was like a light had been switched off the welcome and friendly banter all gone. Over priced sandwiches with a very weird side dressing that looked unappealing and on investigation we didn't eat it. The sandwich plates were almost thrown at us, almost like we were a being a nuisance for wanting food. The whole appearance of the cafe at the back looked dowdy and rundown. Other venues in the town were a lot busier. We have resisted putting on a review but we were so disappointed that our favourite go to venue at Helmsley did not come up to standard.

I am really not a fan of sandwiches (actually I HATE them) - the only sandwich I will eat is at Porters - they used to do a Pastrami one but not seen that in a while - but we (husband and I) share a malted BLT which they serve with a little pickled side salad which is DIVINE we sit in front of the fire with a coffee and me with a 'lush' G&T - wow - to say this about a sandwich (which I hate) the quality is amazing as is the friendly service xxxx

Visiting the area for the day. Called in for a quick drink. WEIRD place. 3 staff on the counter, owner sitting at table in the cafe. All really staring. Had a really uncomfortable and very fast drink as staff continued to stare at us. We couldn't wait to get out. Awful unwelcoming atmosphere. We purposely came to Trip Advisor to see if others had experienced this, and they have. Check out some of the other bizarre reviews. This place has something really off about it. Avoid.

We found the outside area of this lovely cafe sat in the shade and treated ourselves to cakes and cold drinks. The cakes are all made on the premises and if I said we took at least 5minutes at the counter trying to choose which one to have, I would not be lying!!! Moroccan orange cake, lemon drizzle and blueberry and almond tart were the final choices and the y were incredible. Lovely seating area and very friendly staff and although cash is preferred, did not bat an eyelid at us using a debit card.

Having visited this lovely little coffee shop several times in the past few months I have slowly become more and more frustrated by the owners odd attitude to payment types... Initially they pretty much harangued people into paying be cash 'if they could'... And more recently have set a £10 minimum card spend! In a very passive agressive manner. I'm sorry but NO. I will not carry cash that has been through everyones pockets, snot rags etc. I will carry a device that doesnt touch your hygienic surface, that costs you less to process with the bank than cash does and is all round more convenient for everyone. It's almost as if the want to turn customers away! Shame as the coffee and cake is delightful.... Its almost right! To the owners, be more balanced in your views and opinions, leave your ego at home!

Dropped into this place for a spot of lunch. It is eclectically decorated and a nice place to be so we thought we were on to a winner. The drinks were served way before the food which was a little annoying. The food (paninis for our group) is prepared fresh for you but to be honest, I do not recall what it tasted like as there were a number of dogs with other diners at other tables that were barking, growling and standing off with each other so we basically ate up quick and left. Am not sure i would return

Quirky coffee shop. Several comfortable rooms to choose to sit in. Nice sofas in one to relax and enjoy a drink or lunch. Back room is dog friendly. We sat in the outside courtyard and each table had a bowl of water for dogs. We had a BLT sandwich to share which was large enough for both us, and we enjoy our food, it was delicious loaded with quality fresh ingredients. The sandwiches are freshly prepared on the premises then packed for display before being served on a plate with a delicious fresh salad. We also had a homemade scone each with jam and cream which again was delicious. All in we felt in was excellent value. Will definitely visit again.

I have been using Porter's coffee house for over ten years and since moving to Helmsley, every morning without fail. Never in all that time have I had need to complain about anything, which, for a pernickerty individual, such as I am, that's quite an achievement. The service is unfailingly consistent and one cannot ask for anything more than that. The food’s good, the scones excellent and the coffee moreish, it's rare I manage to escape without at least one more. In these difficult times Porter's remained open throughout and made sure their customers could extract what little enjoyment they could, when faced with an unprecedented legal, definitely not lawful, lockdown. For me personally, I'm able to escape the horrors of this latest attack on my liberty and to be able to relax in Porters in much the same way as I always have. It is a service which I cannot speak of highly enough. Thank you Tony Porter for this wonderful opportunity helping us all make the best of a very bad situation.

Saw the dog friendly sign by the front door, a smaller sign said dogs allowed through side door. Once in dogs are only actually allowed in a smaller room which doesn't provide much space or big tables if the one larger table is already taken. When ordering we went through the doorway and was stood in the kitchen area amongst staff, we didn't realise you had to walk around as this was only shown by a small arrow saying 'diversion' which we didn't see until we'd sat back down, a member of staff was quite abrupt and told me to watch out and go round but I didn't realise what she meant. We saw other people pass through this way too without realising! I did enjoy my latte and cake was ok, our experience was let down by the confusing layout and staff who seemed unwelcoming. One of our dogs was told to be quiet from staff when passing, he is still getting used to being out and about so does give the odd bark but is in training and we are mindful. Wouldn't class this cafe as dog friendly or want to return.

Luckily used the 'correct ' door to enter the cafe with our two small dogs( down the alley to the side of the front entrance). This leads into a small room where dogs are allowed....wouldn't go so far as to say welcomed! Strangely, the doorway from this room into the main cafe, leads you behind the actual counter, and in very close proximity to the hot drinks machine! Unbelievably, the customer is supposed to know that they are supposed to squeeze round the back of said machine, to go round it and emerge in front of the counter.... a small sign, simply saying ' diversion. ' conveys this message. We did not see this until my daughter and I had been gestured at and told to go round; even then, I thought she meant to just go round another member of staff who was standing there!! Odd!!Tea, biscuits and scone was good, but other hot drinks, and the caramel slice only ok. One of our dogs is a rescue, and still getting used to being in public, the other a very small, quiet 13 year old. The rescue dog does have a tendency to want to bark at people moving past him,but we kept him in a corner and kept him as quiet as possible. However, the lady who served us walked by,and told him to be quiet when he made a sound! When the other dog was seen, it was 'oh,there's another one.' Even another dog owner was overheard saying' I couldn't listen to that.'We are very mindful of keeping him as calm as possible so as not to disturb others, just as we never let our children be noisy or mess around when they were small. This made us feel very uncomfortable. My daughter visited the toilet ; it was a health and safety issue... difficult to get into, and had things stored there, including a bike!! Would not go in there again.

Porters is a little gem in Helmsley. Its serves delicious fresh homemade food and huge array of fresh sandwiches. We always have a slice of the Italian lemon meringue as it is truly delicious. If you are in Helmsley I urge you to try it.

Outside was full so I sat inside which was stifling. I had coffee and a scone. I do like a good coffee but this blend was rather weak. The scone was very dense and rather dry, all round I was disappointed. I looked at the prices of the sandwiches and went elsewhere, overpriced. Service was not with a smile.

Can recommend this coffee shop and never disappoints. Sit out back in the alley garden area rather than inside.

Great coffee in a lovely relaxing environment. The squashy sofas and magazines make it a great place to escape and relax. Open fire in winter and beautiful outdoor area in summer. All food made and prepared on site

Visited for lunch on a recent visit to North Yorkshire. A warm and welcoming establishment with a great choice of food and very efficient and friendly staff. We had large fruit scones with cream and jam together with coffee. Excellent.

We sat outside at this quaint little cafe, surrounded by beautiful hanging baskets. I had the latte coffee and my wife had a pot of Earl Grey tea made with tea leaves. We had the apple and toffee crumble served with cream which was absolutely delicious. Lovely place to come for a light snack

We called for a late morning coffee and could not resist a tall fruit scone and the trimmings. No taste of baking powder lots of fruit, butter and jam. Just what was needed. Lovely and clean, rapid service by friendly staff. Perfection for once, even in this tourist town. The price OK but then this is Helmsley, green wellies and all!

We went into Porter’s Coffee Shop today. It looked nice from the outside but we were initially disappointed that there was no menu. The very helpful staff told us what was available and we shared a ham and cheese toasty and had a hot chocolate each. After this introduction, we weren’t expecting much. Boy were we in for a very pleasant surprise. The toasty came out with a couple of beautiful salads on the side and the hot chocolates were rich and creamy and tasted divine. The staff was lovely, especially Georgina who served us, Polly who made the fantastic hot chocolate and Monika was also wonderful.

Grumpy service and absolutely awful coffee, undrinkable. We asked for strong coffee but what we were given was akin to dishwater. No wonder the place was empty on a Saturday. Such a shame to see a place go downhill so fast. Luckily there are plenty of brilliant coffee shops in Helmsley.

Stopped here on a chilly Spring morning to be greeted by a wonderful roaring coal fire. Despite being very busy, it was easy to find a table and the service was friendly and efficient. Can recommend the huge scones and good coffee.

Decent choice of food available however we ordered pie mash Mushy peas and gravy. Only had 1 pie (so got a pasty as there was 2 of us) Mash was made from a jacket potato it was very lumpy tinned peas over blasted in the microwave served with a smile however forgot the gravy and it arrived half way through us eating the meal. Sadly this place could be a little gold mine if run correctly and proper attention to detail applied with the food. We hafmd our lunch at 12.15 so there was no way they could have ran out of mash? Could do better really

Booked the brewery tour package from Red Letter days. The tour was very informative with Josh being a fountain of knowledge and obviously loving brewing and beer. His witty remarks and low key humour really made the tour enjoyable. The beer tasting in the bar was flexible and offered a pint taken eith as a pint, two halves or a flight of 3, third pints to enable a range to be tried! Although a small brewery they have some quite advanced mechanisation for bottling, canning and casking! Very impressed,

A lovely friendly bakery, just one wee table to sit and and have a coffee and observe the comings and goings of the regulars, the holiday makers and day trippers. Bread and cakes wonderful, a lovely lady owns this place and I wish her well!

Really friendly and tasty fare. Plenty of choice which was a real representation of good Yorkshire fare. Reasonably priced too
