Lovely Sunday lunch in newly refurbished restaurant. Food and presentation was excellent, more than a little effort had been put in and sweets sumptuous. Staff very pleasant and efficient. An enjoyable experience. Hotel set in the lovely Clydeside.

My wife and I booked a meal at the hotel during the covid control measures and it was well organised with a safe set up. The staff were very attentive and informative. We both had starters and mains which were well presented and tasty. We followed this up with a seat at the fire to enjoy our coffee and a couple of after dinner drinks. There is a good selection of cocktails and I found the malt of the month excelent value. Would hope to return under better circumstances, but it wouldn't put me off if we still had restrictions in place as the safety aspect is well controlled

My wife and I dropped on for Sunday lunch. COVID-19 procedures in place, temperatures checked. Track and trace details too. Tables cleaned, and properly distanced. Two selections from the day’s specials: Rissotto and the Sunday Roast. Both came promptly, excellent service, and were delicious. We were told they have a new chef - and he definitely makes the restaurant well worth a return visit.

I hadn’t eaten in the Popinjay for around 8 years and won’t rush back. Staff and Covid19 procedures were spot on and I couldn’t fault them, my only issue was with the food. My wife had steak pie which was more a stew with pastry, perfectly edible but not what she had expected. My 5 year old and I had fish and chips, him from the kids menu (fish goujons) and I had beer battered fish and chips from the adult menu. Both had a strange taste to them and I’m convinced they both had turmeric or a similar spice in the batter which was very stodgy. The actual fish for both of us was fine but neither my son or I enjoyed the food. Like I say the staff were friendly and attentive and were on top of Covid temperature testing and hygiene. The food though was very disappointing.

Hadn’t been for years so decided to pop in whilst in area.Phoned ahead to book a table met with temperature checks and details recorded. Restaurant lacked atmosphere very dull n drab but tables well spaced out. Nice selection on menu steak pie n burgers both lovely ,however fish had strange taste not sure if it was batter did mention this to server he said would let chef know, would have been nice if he had reassured me that the fish was fresh and it was just the batter recipe that had strange taste. Service was slow inexperience showed just as well restaurant was not busy, however young lady was aware that we had been waiting a while for meals ,dessert n coffee and she apologised although she wasn’t assigned to our table. Probably won’t be back .

Booked a room for a family reunion, however room 15 was very shabby and the toilet was unclean and still marked with poo.Informed staff who said they would deal with it but never did.It was 2.30pm so we asked for a table for lunch. Were told no as there was a wedding on. So we had to go and queue in a nearby garden centre. Disappointing! As my wife is on chemo we swapped a room with another member of the family, in the hope their room would be cleaner. It was slightly cleaner but still shabby with a disabled wet floor shower which was needing upgraded. No toiletries either.Overall very disappointed with hotel.

We have dined here for many years but since it came into new ownership things have gone from bad to worse. Recently they have been unable to keep their chefs for whatever reason and despite being told things were going to improve and there would be a new menu it never happened. The final insult was arriving on a Sunday to be told that again the chefs had walked out and the restaurant was closed. We were offered sandwiches and cakes...for a Sunday lunch...I don't think so. Sad to say our association with the Popinjay has come to an end. We will not be back.

Having been very well respected as a venue for groups in the past thus has gone down hill. At a function they apparently ran out of bread rolls, burnt the soup, served dry or uncooked chicken, measly portions on potatoes, overdone pudding or simply half portions of pudding. And it all took a very long time. In addition the house red wine is terrible. I have never been compelled to write a bad review before this. The waiting staff well delightful and helpful but the management no where to be seen.

Restaurant was not really busy when we went in but waited for a long time for starter coming and the chicken gougons were really tough and over cooked. Salad garnish was leaves a couple of bits of pepper and red onion. Then waited for another half hour for the mains, salmon was a £3 supplement so my wife thought she was getting something special and it was a small slice of salmon baby boil potato and salad leaves! Dessert was like school dinners slapped in a bowl

Myself & my husband had pre booked afternoon tea through 5pm.com. When I called to confirm booking I asked for specific sandwiches. Firstly our tea/ coffee arrived & tea was sent back as water was lukewarm. Poor quality tea bags, I needed a second one in a very small teapot. It took 30 minutes for afternoon tea to arrive & then it was wrong. I had asked for half the sandwiches to be tomato & butter & out of the 8 quarter sandwiches only 2 were tomato & all sandwiches were dry, no butter on any, just the filling. We told the waitress & she brought more tomato sandwiches & these were sent back as again only tomato no butter. Eventually my husband got the sandwiches he wanted but the remaining sandwiches on plate had started to go hard!!!!!!!The waitress Claire was lovely & did her best to remedy our problems. We were offered a free drink each as an apology, my husband had a soft drink & I took sparkling water. It’s very dark & dingy & window ledges could be doing with a good clean. All in all a very disappointing afternoon.

We were not disappointed as on entering around 1pm we were shown to a newly freshened up table by the window. The menu was big enough for all tastes and there was a set price lunch menu or a la carte. I had set price while my wife had the other. Food was excellent and well presented. Our waiter Scott was brilliant was just as much a blether as I. He made our meal even better with some good banter. Price wise the venue is great value for money and although we went there when kids were at school, I noticed a children’s food selection. This was my friend and I first visit and it most definitely won't be the last. Check in was smooth . Staff friendly . Got into room (18) an hour before said time. Room was an refurbished one and finished to a very high standard . Bedding was white and spotless . Mattress and pillows had protectors on which are a must for me . Plenty of tea coffee etc. Bathroom was spotless and towels white and fluffy . We unpacked then went to the bistro for lunch which was delicious and the portion was huge. Then headed back to room to chill before getting ready for dinner . Restaurant is gorgeous and dinner was delicious and the portions were huge. Erin our waitress was very attentive making sure we had everything we needed. After dinner we spent an hour in the bar part of the bistro where Lianne catered for our drink needs . Back to the room where we both slept well in the comfy bed. Breakfast in the morning was very enjoyable . Plenty of choice in the cold buffet and any hot stuff was cooked to order . The portions were again huge and we couldn't finish it all . We went back to room to pack up . Check out was done smoothly . We put luggage in the car before heading back into hotel to head to the spa and leisure facilities. We spent a few hours just chilling using pool sauna steam room and Jacuzzi. After that we headed back to bistro where we had lunch. Again food was delicious and the portions were huge. Definitely be back to this wee gem .

Four adults and one child went in at 19:20 on Bank Holiday Monday (today), for an evening meal. We were told in would be a 15minute wait...we waited 25 minutes. After we ordered our meals (4 steak pies with veg and mash, 1 burger with onion rings and chips), we then waited 50 minutes for the food to come. After 35 minutes waiting, a waitress explained that they only had one hob working, and was very sorry. When the food came, the mashed potatoes were cold. In fact the only thing that was hot were the chips. No onion rings either !!! We left most of the meal and asked for the manager, a young lady who said that she was sorry that we hadn't enjoyed our food, but "lots of others had had steak pies, and theirs weren't cold". We told her that we'd been told about the kitchen only having one hob, but she didn't seem to know about this. She offered a 10% reduction on the bill, and we asked for more. She then came back and increased this to 30%, which we accepted. The place wasn't very busy, we have enjoyed meals there before, when it has been a lot busier. If they had told us earlier that there weŕe problems in the kitchen, we would have gone elsewhere.Very poor indeed !!!

Just back from our 3 nights stay here. We were given a free upgrade when we booked in and the room we were given was very nice and roomy and at the back of the hotel overlooking the garden. A lovely quiet room apart from the person in the room next door who constantly slammed their door every time they left the room, this was especially annoying at just after 7am in the morning. All the front of house staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful. The food was fabulous and we ate there every night and were never disappointed with any of the dishes we ate. On a personal note, I found the portion size a bit large for me but my husband was more than happy with the amounts he was given. We found a couple of things that let them down and spoilt the overall enjoyment of our stay here. The WIFI was unattainable no matter where you went in the hotel even though we were told where the good spots were. The housekeeping really could do with some improvements. Our room was very dusty in places and the dish that holds the tea, coffee and milk etc could do with a good wash. We had to request at reception for the tea and milk to be replenished as this was not done. Little things I know but these we feel did let the hotel down.We would recommend this hotel if you want to get away from it all and it is in a beautiful part of Scotland and well worth a visit. Try the food even if you are not staying here, bet you will enjoy.

Attended a summer wedding and had a great time. Lovely bright airy function room overlooking the gardens which was very pretty with gazebo and swing seat. Plenty of outdoor tables and chairs for sitting in summer evening. Very relaxed and laid back environment. Nice staff.

Ordered beef wellington. Told it would take half hour which I said was fine. Half way through starters told it had run out despite order being taken! Ordered stroganoff instead which was watery and tasteless with 7 small pieces of meat. Service was brusque and not smiling. Not a good place for a couple to go. Seen much much better days.

I decided to treat my husband to a birthday dinner, after looking at the online menu we thought we would have a lot of choice (especially me being vegetarian), Needless to say when we got there it was a different menu. After stating there was nothing I could eat they offered to make me a Penne Arrabiata. I didn't think it was possible to go wrong with pasta, apparently I was wrong. I've never tasted anything quite like it. My husband ordered the Steak & Ale pie, when that arrived it had obviously been microwaved to within an inch of its life as the meat and mash potatoes were dry. A severe bout of sickness and upset stomach followed that evening. We will not be back.

My husband and I popped into the Popinjay for lunch and were seated in the hotel restaurant. We ordered and I can safely say that this is possibly one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune to experience. My Gammon Steak arrived and I was presented with 6 large boiled potatoes which dominated the plate, oh and the pineapple ring completely hid the Gammon steak( this will give you an indication of the actual size)! Once I had located the Gammon I was astonished to see if resembled a dried up rasher of bacon. I had no choice but to send this back. My husband didnt fair any better as the Chicken breast and risotto were bland, stodgy , swimming in oil and missing the parmesan tuille advertised. Really disappointed and wont ever return. In fairness the Manager on duty didnt charge us a penny to try and rescue the situation. Just a shame the kitchen couldnt match this attention to detail.....

My husband and I had the chance of a few days away and booked the Popinjay Hotel because of the very reasonably priced deal. The hotel is in a small village with no shop that we could see but has a garden centre round every corner and is on a bus route plus it is within a few miles of larger places like Hamilton, Motherwell and is about thirty minutes from East Kilbride and Glasgow. The hotel looks quite dated from the outside but inside is modern and clean with the addition of an excellent swimming pool and gym area although unfortunately the sauna was broken when we were there. The staff are very welcoming especially the ones in the dining room including Bobby the chef. The evening meals were lovely with good portion size and good value for money if you weren't on a deal like us. The breakfast menu was quite extensive although the addition of some cold meat or cheese with the continental version would make it even better. Our room was small but modern with a lovely bathroom and was nice and warm with a heater that could be adjusted by ourselves unlike many hotels we have been in where the hotel control the heat. Overall we had a most enjoyable break at this hotel and would certainly consider a return visit.

Our family of 14 were over in Scotland for my Mum's funeral and stayed at the Popinjay for a couple of nights. The receptionists arranging the booking were very helpful and sympathetic. Our check in was very quick and easy. Craig, the duty manager introduced himself when we arrived at the restaurant for our evening meal and nothing was too much bother for him or the waiting and bar staff .We found the food to be of an excellent quality and presentation. It tasted amazing, the men are still talking about how good the steak pie was.Compliments to the chef, breakfast was great too and hot food made fresh to order. My husband said he has never had such a good omelette. Thanks to Elaine breakfast waitress for getting us organised.A big thanks to the reception staff, waiting staff, bar staff leisure staff, night Porter, and housekeeping staff. We commented on the amount of team work and multi tasking that went on.Craig and others could turn their hand to most things. When my son highlighted an issue with a door in his room, Craig was up and had it dealt with it immediately.A big thank you, to all, for making a very difficult situation so much easier.Keep up the good work and we hope to stay again in the future

Stayed in the hotel for dinner bed and breakfast. Two nights dinner in the hotel, food was great both nights. On a previous stay with my husband the restaurant has offered haggis Bon bons (they rotate their menu and were not on the menu this visit). I mentioned this to the waiting staff on the Friday and we were offered them as a starter on the Saturday. We were very impressed.Looking forward to our next visit.

Disappointed is an understatement. The hotel should be ashamed of themselves. We waited an hour for our food despite bringing this to their attention. It was mediocre at best. Heated up frozen food. Then after leaving we realised we'd been overcharged! The staff were frankly disinterested and rude, until we complained. Then they seemed to realise we were being treated badly and became flustered possibly fearing we might bring the debacle to the management's attention. Should have walked out. I regret that we had the politeness the staff utterly lacked. Never again, once of the worst places I've visited in Scotland.

I booked this for a relaxing overnight stay with my daughter for a treat, we planned to have some spa treatments but had left it too late to book them as they were fully booked for the Sunday. The hotel was lovely as was the food and the very friendly staff, who made us both feel very welcome. Over all experience was great but the only downfall was the room we were allocated(room 08) the room itself was nice bit where it was situated was not ideal, we were awake from 6am because of the noise we got as soon as anyone turned a tap on on their room, it was a very loud droning noise constantly. We did not sleep as well as I thought we should have but as I say this was the hotels one and only problem. Apart from that we had a lovely stay with good food and relaxation in the pool, sauna and jacuzzi.

Having read all the reviews I was expecting the meal to be a fancy and painfully expensive. We were pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the menu was. Most dishes were a tenner or less, and the festive menu was just over 20 for 3 courses. All the food was lovely although my steak was a little tough, everyone else's food was lovely. The trimmings, starters and deserts were all really good too.The place was completely empty though, one other couple turned up during our meal, but aside from that it was dead. Not sure if this was due to the time of year?Overall we will likely be coming back.

We went here for lunch for my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary. There were 21 of us in total and they had given us the room next to the bar, which was lovely and had a nice atmosphere. The starters all seemed to be fine, I know that my starter was great. Everything seemed to go wrong by the main course. My boyfriend ordered the chicken stir fry... which had one piece of chicken in it. Other people at our table had this issue and a few sent their food back. Others had been served food which was cold. The manager apologised and agreed to take dessert off the bill at the end, which was great.Dessert was pretty disappointing. My boyfriend and I both ordered the chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet. What we got was chocolate tart with a wee blob of cream and a raspberry on top - no sorbet. I told staff but they just looked at me blankly and never got back to me. The tart was nice, but it was simply too rich to finish without anything else to accompany it.Overall, it is basically average pub grub with an expensive price. It is a shame because the Popinjay used to be a great place to go. I'm afraid I won't be back, it was just too disappointing. I feel it is important to mention that most of the staff were great and hard working. Perhaps a new chef though.

Myself and my wife decided to pop in for lunch. We had a lengthy wait to be seated with no staff around. Food was okay but the 30min wait for the main course was excessive. Decor was very dated, windows were full of scratches and stained, table looked like it was made by someone in tech at school in the 70s, was full of scratches and stains. Full place had a weird smell and I don't just mean an air of disappointment from the guests. Unless you're an archaeologist and/or have lost your sense of smell...keep driving.

We stopped off here for a walk in bar lunch. The bar was taken up with a function but we were directed to the dining room where a friendly member of staff offered us a choice of tables. The full range of menus were made available to us. The menu's were reasonable varied and allergies identified. Could have perhaps offered a glutton free range. The food served was of good quality and very adequate quantities, although I have had better steak& ale pie which was a bit chewy and the crust was hard but still edible. The staff were extremely friendly without being overboard. Overall a lovely lunch in a lovely hotel which was fresh and looked well maintained. The gents toilets were immaculate. Could have replaced the missing tile on the door step. Great value for money and I would return.

Attended at the Popinjay for a family birthday meal. We were given the whole of the small Bistro restaurant to ourselves, which was really nice. The food was of a very good standard with a wide choice of dishes and a children's menu which had the usual stuff. What I would like to highlight was the service: great. We had three young ladies look after us and they did us proud. Very attentive and could not do enough making sure we had everything we required.......(manager please note). Of interest to anyone considering this venue for a family doo with young children is the garden to the rear of the hotel where they can run about. Be aware though you are only a short distance from the river Clyde and you should give children close supervision.

I had a contract from a supplier staying and a colleague and myself had arranged to have dinner with him. We decided to rest in the hotel. We were served quickly and politely. I asked if I could have a meal from the lunch menu and this was not a bother. We all had different dishes and all were very good. My only bother wad that in the Poundland lunch, there was only one toe of cheese other wise I it wss good for a Tuesday night. A big well done to the girl who served us, she was cheerful and nothing was too much bother.

Enjoyed an unplanned mid week late lunch in the hotel restaurant. We got a parking space right at the front door, although there were more spaces further down. Met by friendly staff who were attentive throughout the meal, helpfully explaining things on the menu that we asked about. Food was good, particularly the fish and the sweets.

Very poor experience at Popinjay Restaurant during a 20th wedding anniversary meal. After calling in advance to explain we were married in the hotel and to reserve a nice table at the window, on arrival all the window tables were already taken.Next issue was the very poor quality of the food, which was both tasteless, poorly presently and badly cooked. As way of an example the steak which I ordered "medium" was cooked through and very tough, indicative of not being rested prior to cooking.Additionally, I ordered waffles for dessert which were rock hard and uneatable. As well as the poor service and quality of the food the restaurant has a serious insect problem, with flies and other insects all over the place.Summary:- Based on this experience, we will not be back !!

Visited Lanark this summer, and wanted a dog friendly pub for a quick drink. To say this place is dog friendly is a huge understatement - the staff made me and my spaniel puppy feel really welcome - they offered to cook some chicken goujons for him, which he loved. We returned for lunch the following day. I had an amazing burger and again puppy got some beef for his lunch and also given a takeaway box for him for later. Thank you for being so friendly.

Never open when it says it is. Google says it’s open and when you go down it’s shut. Happened a couple times to us now. Last time we ordered on their website and then they were shut when we went to collect the already paid for meal. Today went to order in person as it said online they were open and again it’s shut.

Cosy, clean, and also very good noise level, which is appreciated by neurodivergent people! The food and drinks are delicious, and there's an amazing range to try. There are a ton of vegetarian and vegan options for food and drink, and a wonderful staff member helped to customise a drink to make it decaf and vegan! The staff are all lovely and helpful, and are so quick at making everything that it's almost surreal. We'll definitely be back!
