Great place to hold events and meetings

The original part of the building is characterful, the added block I stayed in not so much. Room was a bit tired, the decor dated, the mattress definitely past it's best. On the upside, it was clean, quiet, and brilliant water pressure with plenty of hot water. No restaurant, so you order food from Deliveroo and collect it from reception. Location is good for all city centre journeys, a 4 minute walk from tram stop that takes you to New Street Station in 10 minutes. Some trees and a bit of lawn make you feel further away from the busy Hagley Road than you really are. Room wasn't serviced during my two night stay.

The lack of food other than breakfast is not a good point. Hotel is ok but quite tired. Our room had cobwebs that were not appealing. The staff were great when you could find one. Tried four times to ring reception to have the heating adjusted over more than an hour no answer. Won't return

Staff and rooms were amazing. Irish Paul, Tom, Miles & Praneet were great. Breakfest ladies were adorable too. Was my partners mums Wake and was received brilliantly everyone enjoyed themselves and music booked and pictures placed in the rooms were fantastic ❤️ 💙 💜 💖

Worse hotel I have ever been. The hotel and the rooms are dated, maintenance is not existent, cleanliness is the last thing you will find here. I had a beer at the bar and even the glass smelled of dump, I didn’t finish my drink because of it. Absolutely disgusting. Never again, I have cancelled any future booking (I am in Birmingham for work often and my usual hotel was fully booked), I rather sleep in my car.

When I first came to Birmingham this was the place to go. No longer. I had breakfast there. Possibly I have expectations of what was once the best hotel in Birmingham, and this has affected my judgement, certainly in those days the tables would be covered with white linen, but not to be able to get marmalade for breakfast is, to my mind, unacceptable.

What an amazing hotel, where do I start? The building itself I guess, it's stunning, a piece if history amidst the modern structures all around it. Beautiful inside as it is outside. Staff are ultra friendly, welcoming and very efficient! The room I was allocated was a standard room and for the price I wasn't expecting much but wow, it was really spacious, I was very pleasantly surprised. Breakfast was great! I had an absolute marvellous stay and highly recommend this hotel if you are perhaps visiting Sealife Centre, on business or even the theatres and shopping in the city centre. Just great, huge thank you!!!!

Used one of the meeting rooms upstairs. Decor and furniture were dated and dusty. No lift so no one who is disabled could use upper floors. Limited parking. Staff were uninterested.

Had such an excellent stay here this weekend. On arrival, they managed to fit me into my room earlier than planned. The whole stay I was looked after. Corey is an absolute credit to the team, he made sure every part of my stay was smooth. Even looking up a route for me to the best IKEA. Spot on

Stayed to be close to the edgebaston campus of bcu. Room nice, bed comfy. Bathroom could use a little updating. Cables from CCTV cables wete banging on the window in the wind (112), a couple of cable ties would sort that issue. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was hearty and set me up for the day!

The room was quite big but the washroom had no water pressure, had to wait for 20 mins to have a decent shower. The wifi was very poor ! Wouldn't stay again. The room was alright.

It's a bit of a rabbit Warren, I don't know if jk tolken stayed here or after his time in ww1, but it could of influenced him... Staff were amazing

Rooms were very clean and tidy but unfortunately cold. Breakfast was good but food not always topped up. Service at breakfast was good. Bar service was OK although sometimes bar staff were more interested in talking to girlfriends instead of being behind the bar serving. Informative reception staff. Location brilliant.

A hotel from the 1970's! Staff all good, spacious well equipped clean rooms but the heating wasn't high enough and the only good thing about breakfast was the sausages but I was lateish starting.

Stayed for the weekend with Friends. The hotel is large and old with appropriate decor, giving it a romantic feel of tales to be told. Everyone was extremely welcoming and Friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast in the morning had something for everyone to enjoy. I would definitely recommend this Hotel and i hope to return soon

We went to the Murder Mystery evening and it was fantastic. The murder mystery was very interactive with the suspects joining us for the meal and a detective discussing our thoughts on the clues. It was an absolutely brilliant night which I would recommend to anyone. We were served a three course meal which had vegetarian/vegan options for each course. The food was hot, there was a good selection, the service was efficient and the prtions were good sizes. The bar offers soft drinks, hot drinks and alcohol, including popular cocktails. The bar was not too expensive to say this hotel is close to the city centre and famous for it's Tolkien connection. The room was very big with a comfy bed and an ensuite bathroom. It was nice and quiet and we slept well. The decor was rather dated in our room but that might be the look they were going for since it's an old hotel. There was a buffet style breakfast with a very large selection of hot food, pastries, fruit, cereal etc and there was also juice and a choice of hot drinks. The staff here are very friendly and accommodating. The room was about £85 for a double, including breakfast, which was really good value for money. I definitely recommend this hotel!

We came for a Murder Mystery dinner and stayed over with some friends. The hotel has good character, as do the friendly and helpful staff. We had a Vegan meal that was tasty and showed they cared about serving an inclusive menu. The venue is well suited to events - with a range of rooms and facilities. The bedroom was recently refreshed to a high standard. For example, usb charging sockets on both sides of the bed show good attention to detail

Dusty room with cobwebs. Could hear next door through the bathroom vent. Ran out of many breakfast items: fruit, juice glasses, pastries. Staff tried hard to make up for it.

Great location for a quiet city centre break...a short walk to the start of the Birmingham to Wolverhampton tram to get to the centre cheaply

Beautiful old hotel, great manager Emma (says something that I can still remember her name).

I met up with an old friend for a quiet drink in the bar. We were accosted by an aggressive drunk who refused to leave us alone. He had, apparently, been in the bar for some time. The management should have called the police to remove him.

Unpleasant stay, no heating working at all, even when asked to turn on, we waited and nothing changed. Room filled with cob webs, and not clean. Were then moved to another newer build suite, better room, but again no heating working, phone dead and unable to call reception. And no pressure from the shower. Unsatisfactory for cost of room, were advised a full refund, yet nothing refunded and having to chase now.

Arrived late after taking wrong junction on M6.Staff checked for me wether I had to pay clean air charge at reception. Receptionist was very good and helpfull. Room was a newly refurbished was clean and tidy with good amenities, heating was on and you could only turn down by contacting the receptionist. Breakfast was very good with food being replenished when necessary not much waste. Carpark was not full even when arrived late. Room was on second floor and a bit of a hike with the bags there is no lift. Very nice hotel and good staff.would go again when in area.

We stayed at the Plough and Harrow overnight as we attended a concert at the Symphony Hall. Very conveniently situated, there is a free car park on site. We were welcomed by a lovely lady at Reception. We love the Victorian building. The breakfast room, lobby and sitting room are nicely decorated and furnished in the Victorian style. Our room on first floor was spacious, the King size bed comfortable. Nice bathroom. All very clean. Free Wifi efficient. Good night sleep (no traffic noise heard). Good breakfast. The staff are very friendly and take an interest in the guests. We were very pleased with the hotel and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

People were lovely! However the mattress was hard and lumpy.

Stayed here recently with a friend to watch a concert at Utilita. We was pressed for time when we arrived which I'm sure the receptionist picked up on. She was brilliant and gave us useful information about how to get to the venue and back and info about the hotel and our rooms. The decor is dated but it's in keeping with the hotel so nothing looks out of place and we had no issues what so ever. It was clean, comfortable and plenty of room to put our stuff. Room also came with a fan which was needed in the warm weather. On return from the concert we was met in the bar/restaurant area by a member of staff and asked if we needed anything before going to our room and served a glass of cold water to take with us and then shown to our room as we had entered a different way to earlier in the day so alittle unsure. This was unexpected customer service and very thoughtful. Check out is 11am so no rushing in the morning and breakfast is self serve with plenty of choice. When packing the car the receptionist was arriving back at the hotel and gave us a lovely greeting before starting her shift. I would definitely return for future trips to Birmingham.

Staff were great, location was good, but there were just a number of things with the room I get that were in a heatwave, but there was a sign in the room that says that the room is kept at 21 degrees and to turn it down you have to ask at reception. We asked, and we were told it couldn't be done We also had a super long walk to our hotel room, and while this isn't an issue for me, it does raise some disability access concerns as there were a number of winding corridors and stairs to get to any rooms, let alone hours. Our TV was constantly on the blink, not a huge deal, but we showed a member of staff the video of it happening as it was intermittent, and while we were told that the channels may needed to be resynced, we weren't told how to do this, nor was assistance provided with it. Plus arriving into the room there was a really unpleasant smell. It soon went, but worth noting. Not the worst place I've stayed, but I probably wouldn't be back.

Lovely hotel, great staff who couldn't do enough for you. Jittery has great character, and tab terminus is just yards down the road, so perfect for getting into the centre of Birmingham. The hotel layout is a little quirky, but for me this just adds to the character. Loads of wood panels, and a few statues as well. Breakfast is very good. Make sure you book direct with Best Western... better price and breakfast is included, as is free parking!

I felt like I stepped back in time 😊oh and there isn’t any lift/ elevator 😀and no fridge in the rooms, but I enjoyed the classic and exquisite decor and ambiance of the hotel👌🏼 Indeed, A hidden gem in this modern world of technology. A pleasurable stay!

This is a review for the hotel - there is only breakfast served there. We stayed for 2 nights as the wake for a family funeral was held there. It is an old hotel so no lifts. The staff were, without exception, very friendly and eager to help, some needed a little more training but were still very eager to help. Rooms were fine, clean and tidy and whilst a little dated nothing to complain about. Breakfast was excellent apart from bacon being over cooked but not crispy. Service here again was exceptional. The wake buffet was fine, no complaints here. So why only 4 stars? This was down to the bar. It was not a well stocked bar and whoever manages it should have been aware of how much 100+ guests at a funeral would be drinking. Draught beer ran out, cider ran out, poor whisky selection (and no bourbon), no Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio just Chardonnay or Rose but they did have Shiraz. To their credit they went out and bought a bottle of bourbon for the widow and put a big ice bucket of beers out free of charge but they need to look at the drinks people want these days for me to give it 5 stars. Would I stay again? Definitely.

We were there for a wake and found the staff excellent and very attentive. They went out of their way to help everyone. Can certainly recommend this hotel and venue x

Come here for drinks once in a while. Cosy and welcoming atmosphere, convenient location, easy to get to city centre by road or public transport.

Great hotel. Lovely rooms. Fab location. Strange being allowed to eat your own takeaways in the lounge! Breakfast was very comprehensive, something for everyone and good quality.

We had our wedding here and it was an amazing day! We wanted a city-centre wedding at an approved premise for legal ceremonies with outdoor space and Plough and Harrow's offer was far and above the best of the ones we looked at. They were super helpful and welcoming, and listened to and fulfilled our requests (including for the catering to be vegan). You get 3 different rooms for the wedding - 1) the formal room, 2) the bar/lounge area (with a piano guests can play) and 3) an outdoor garden area with seating, great for garden games. The venue is so nice you don't necessarily need to do that much decorating yourself. They also do a lot of the on-the-day coordinating for you. Compared to other venues in the area, this is surprisingly affordable for how good it is, and a great time.

This is hard to mark. Staff were exceptionally helpful. Rooms were large but very tired (no problem as price was cheap). There is no food at night but you can order takeaways. This is not a problem because it is made clear when you book. There was more parking than I originally thought. For me, it was an ideal location for what I needed.

It's a beautiful old building. Went to a wedding there.. Didn't see inside rooms but the outside did not look good, curtains looked dirty and building was very 1970s. Food at the party not great. Sausage ok but no one was sure if it was chicken or salmon as it was pinkish. Bar staff were lovely and the toilets were clean. Room was perfect for a party and the outside space was good. Small car park of a very busy Hagley road but close to city centre

Excellent value so close to the centre. A little dated but aren't we all. Very clean. Drinks prices ok. My room was quite big.

Lovely hotel with history,, staff so helpful and kind. But the rooms let it down.. They are so outdated and in areas dusty. Bed was comfortable. Get the breakfast .. Yummy.

Fantastic Victoria House 🏠 Hotel for conference and relaxation. Apart from the lack of air-conditioning provision considering the hot weather.

I used their car park when visiting offices opposite, they were very helpful and provided a receipt.

Very tired and dated rooms, which weren't overly clean. Quite far from the city centre. Reception were also very slow to check people in. But it's a nice old building and the bar area looked good.

Very nice hotel in an old-fashioed but cosy style. The room was comfortable and clean. For the service only two stars because there was no clean-up during my stay (but that was indicated before), but hot water, tea and coffee were available. Very near to the conference centre Park Regis, somewhat farer distance to the city centre. Medium prize range but good value for the money.

Terrible sofabed for the children , it was not fit to sleep on, children could feel the structure of the frame and could not sleep at all. Lady at reception is wonderful and the grandness of the main building is lovely but we stayed in an old part of the building.

Amazing hotel it's really old and interesting but the room was lovely and clean, beds was very comfortable and breakfast in the morning was great value and very tasty lots of choice. Special mention to Emma on reception who made our stay extra lovely made a fuss of our son who's birthday it was and even went the extra mile to getting him a birthday card so he had it at breakfast service he was absolutely over the moon thankyou so much! Great location to. Room was basic bed, kettle, TV the beds was very comfortable we would stay again

The hotel was dark, only member of staff to be seen was on reception, conference room had part of the ceiling falling in and when asked for water for 12 people, only 2 bottles were provided.

Was there for a first aid course somewhat dated tbh.

Tired rooms and decor but the most wonderful staff and such a comfy bed.

Great stay. Little boy however had a bad night, saying he could see ghosts and talking to them. We've stayed out lots and only ever happened here and stories I've read since tell me ghosts have been seen before. Would love to find some more info on the history of this place

Lovely old style hotel. Was disappointed there wasn't a restaurant but they do have the option yo order food through deliveroo amd did provide a plate and cutlery. The lady on reception was cover var and reception and was very busy but also very pleasant

Arrived at hotel, excellent parking, check in was superb and was made to feel very welcome. Everything about hotel was explained excellently room was superb and very clean, very comfortable bed. Highly reccomennd this hotel for its value for money excellent service and location will definitely be booking again

Great location, excellent staff, great room and wonderful breakfast.

It is very difficult to get to off the main road, and if you miss the entrance, you will have to drive around the block to access the car park. The staff on the bar were not able to mix drinks on the menu. The drinks itself were overpriced. The rooms were cramped and not laid out well.

Pop in here just for a coffee. We were early attention the Oratory for a funeral. Looked like they were busy setting the up for a function. The manageress said yes no problem but it would just be filter coffee. We were more than happy with that as it was freezing outside. When we had finished and went to pay, she said NO CHARGE. We'll what an obsolete pleasant surprise. That doesn't happen very often. We will go back there for a meal

A bit dated in parts. However the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. We parked the car up and got taxis in to the centre. Well worth it,no hassle and reasonably priced.

Easy to get to and ideal location for walking (15 mins) or tram to the city centre. All the hotel staff I encountered were extremely helpful and genuiely friendly - makes such a positive difference to a stay. Will be back.

Stayed here many times over past forty plus years. Staff more helpful and positive than I recall. Rooms haven’t changed much but, praise be, they are well lit. No hoping to make up or dress well as there was light. Rooms a good size and properly equipped. Breakfast good value by modern hotel standards. Car parking free if booking direct. Glad to have come back, will come again.

Room was clean and surprisingly full of character, nice surprise upgrade to a suite as well. Fairly priced bar with decent drinks, breakfast was average with poor vegan and veggie options.

Looks lovely from the road and downstairs is nice although quite dark and dated. We found the room to be quite tired and really average to be honest. I would not have thought it was part of the Great Western group as it really needs work doing on it and I didn't think they had enough staff, really slow service for cream tea.

On arrival we were greeted at reception checked in quickly and shown the quickest way to the room. We had a couple of drinks at the bar and got a great recommendation for dinner at the physician pub which was a five min walk if that. Breakfast was good. Had a good selection of food for all even my picky children I would like to personally say thanks to Alex on reception for generally being a nice person, being great with the kids and making our short stay perfect. He’s a credit to the hotel.

Kept awake until after 3am by shouting and singing. Very disappointed the management didn't seem to recognise the problem.

Great location. But no lift in the hotel. Had to carry heavy bags two floors up. The receptionist helped carry but it was a bit too much even for her. The layout is strange and spooky. You have to walk through a maze to get to the room. Service was quick. Breakfast was below average.

Fab room, sloping floor, but given age of building will forgive that. Evening barman come receptionist helpful as was the night guy. Disappointing that don't offer evening food, but plenty of places deliver and hotel promotes it and will supply utensils and plates.

Third time of staying here and it's perfect location for visiting the Symphony Hall as just a 10 minute walk. Bonus of having parking and the staff are super helpful.

Lovely hotel, Its old but stylish . Really lovely bar area.Good location, Hotel is about 10 to 15 min straight walk to Broad street. All staff are so Lovely,helpful and friendly, couldnt do enough for us. The only negative was there is no lift.

I like the breakfast as the food are freshly made in particular the croissant. The room is in good size and the staff are friendly and helpful. The walking distance to town centre need more than half an hour normally.

Made to feel very welcome. Very good breakfast and a teapot for my tea. On a bus route which was great as we eere there for the commonwealth games. Would stay there again.

The front of house does look good , however it stops there. We were escorted to the back (extension) Probably done in the mid 70s / 80s. The room was dated and the beds too. The room was fairly clean however there were stains all over the place due to age. This place needs a total refurb and no fridge in the room. Also the back entrance looks asif it's been broken into and is totally unsecure, didnt feel safe. Breakfast was horrific as if it was all from a tin and all services were poor the only half good item was the bought in jams. The service was just peculiar and awkward.

It's not clean at all, I've been in this hotel for a few days, they only change the towels and make the beds, but they don't clean the room or the bathroom floor, zero cleanliness👎

The location was great as close to the end of the Metro. The service was poor as the room was not made up, despite requesting. We'd left wet towels in bath to be replaced and these remained when we arrived back late. Also, no loo rolls or shampoo/soap. The tea/coffee ran out. Asked at reception the following day & a young waiter from breakfast was sent out to hear our complaint!! The hotel is a bit tired in places but ok for a few nights.

Had an amazing night sleep best sleep I’ve had in a while comfy beds, lovely friendly reception team! Made you feel very welcome and gave my daughter free bubbles! Peaceful hotel with lovely decor, very good price and right near the city centre will be coming back for my next trip to Birmingham. Thank you best western.

Staying with family over 3 generations and all our needs were catered for. Rooms a little dated but the staff more than compensated for this with a thoughtful, friendly and proactive approach. Good location, nice atmosphere generated by happy staff and happy guests. Breakfast a decent range with Gluten free options and nothing rushed.

Very nice hotel overall. Only minor thing was having to wait for someone to be on reception in the morning, seemed to be a little short staffed but all the staff were very helpful!

Stayed in room 121, a very large suite. Stayed for 3 weeks. Huge bedroom and generous sized living room. Huge windows. Very quiet. Good breakfast with plenty of choices. Delightful staff. Have also spent a lot of time in room 202 - very quiet, view of gardens. Have also stayed in 104 - another spacious room at the back, overlooking the school. Nice and cool in summer. Breakfast service is help-yourself now. Much improved.

Rooms are dated, bathroom was extremely tired and heading towards unpleasant. Location was great. Breakfast was seemed a bit bare later in the morning. Bar area was nice and very grand.
